    The Night's King

    d174874bf74bf8c23384bb753e442b29.jpg

So The whitewalkers were pushed back to the lands of always winter by the first men and the children of the forest in the Battle for Dawn. Legendary Azor Ahai led that battle. Not long after Brandon the builder (founder of house Stark) built the wall with the help of giants and the magic of children of the forest. Then after some time, the nights king was made.

According to legend, Night's King lived during the Age of Heroes, not long after the Wall was complete. He was a fearless warrior named the thirteenth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Later, he fell in love with a woman "with skin as white as the moon and eyes like blue stars". He chased her and loved her though "her skin was cold as ice", and when he gave his seed to her he gave his soul as well. Night's King brought her back to the Nightfort(Historically a very important castle in the the wall.) and after the unholy union, he declared himself king and her his queen, and ruled the Nightfort as his own castle for thirteen years.

During the dark years of his reign, horrific atrocities were committed, of which tales are still told in the north. It was not until Brandon the Breaker, the King of Winter, and Joramun, the King-Beyond-the-Wall, joined forces that Night's King was brought down and the Night's Watch freed. After his fall, when it was discovered that Night's King had been making sacrifices to the Others, all records of him were destroyed and his very name was forbidden and forgotten. It is likely this led the lords of the north to forbid the Night's Watch to construct walls at their keeps, ensuring the keeps would always be accessible from the south.
    .

“ He had been the thirteenth man to lead the Night's Watch, she said; a warrior who knew no fear. 'And that was the fault in him,' she would add, 'for all men must know fear.' ”
    - Bran Stark recalling Old Nan's stories

“Night's King was only a man by light of day, Old Nan would always say, but the night was his to rule.”
    - thoughts of Bran Stark

“... in the books he is a legendary figure, akin to Lann the Clever and Brandon the Builder, and no more likely to have survived to the present day than they have.”
    - George R. R. Martin

    Night's Queen

"For thirteen years, he and his Queen ruled over his brothers, making sacrifices as black as their cloaks."
    ―Ygritte

    latest

According to legend, a Lord Commander of the Night's Watch (The 13th commander as stated above) found in the Haunted Forest a cold woman with bright blue eyes, seemingly a female White Walker. He took her to the other side of the Wall and declared himself "Night's King". For thirteen years the two ruled over the brothers of the Night's Watch, performing human sacrifices. The Free Folk rallied under the banner of a King-Beyond-the-Wall, Joramun, and marched against the Nightfort, which the Night's King had taken as his seat, defeating him and his queen with the aid of House Stark.

Maesters are skeptical of the legend, thinking Night's King's corpse queen was possibly a daughter of a Barrow King from the barrowlands. (I'll describe them later on) Some fan theories link her with the Others because of her description

Another thing I'd like to state is that in the upcoming events of the north, the stories told by the people of the north and winterfell might differ from the stories by free folk/ wildlings.
Lets talk about the famous Hor Of Winter next :)

Horn Of Winter/ Horn Of Joramun

    The-Winds-of-Winter-book-cover.jpg

The Horn of Winter, also known as the Horn of Joramun, is a legendary horn with magical properties. It was supposedly blown by Joramun, a wildling King-Beyond-the-Wall. When he blew the horn, he "woke the giants from the earth." It is currently claimed that blowing the Horn will destroy the Wall. (Only a rumour. No one knows what'll happen when the horn is blown)

In the books Mance Rayder claims to have found the Horn of Joramun in a grave beneath a glacier, high up in the Frostfangs.

The horn which Mance Rayder names the Horn of Joramun is eight feet long. It is so wide at the mouth that Jon Snow could put his arm inside up to the elbow. It is black in colour with gold bands that are graven with runes of the First Men. At first Jon thinks the bands are bronze but when he moves closer he realises that the bands are made of gold, old gold, more brown than yellow. It is said to be a thousand years old.

It is not known what the horn is made of. Jon Snow thinks that if it came from an aurochs, it was the biggest aurochs that ever lived.

    Recent Events of the Horn

    In A Storm Of Swords,
Mance Rayder initially claimed to have opened fifty graves in search of the Horn but failed to find it. However, when Jon Snow returned to the wildling camp, this time as a brother of the Night's Watch, Mance presented what he said was the Horn, telling Jon of his plans to blow the horn should the wildlings fail to take the Wall.

When Jon asked why they haven’t used the horn, why not just sound it and be done? It is Dalla that answers,

“We free folk know things you kneelers have forgotten. Sometimes the short road is not the safest, Jon Snow. The Horned Lord once said that sorcery is a sword without a hilt. There is no safe way to grasp it."

“But once the Wall is fallen, what will stop the Others?”
Mance planned to offer the Horn in exchange for letting his people pass through the Wall. (So they know of the consequences of destroying the wall)

    In A Dance with Dragons,
When Melisandre sets the Horn of Joramun alight it bursts into flame and goes up with a whoosh as swirling tongues of green and yellow fire leap and crackle all along it length. The men of the Night’s Watch have to fight to still their mounts. A moan comes from the stockade as the free folk see their hope afire. For half a heartbeat the runes graven on the gold bands seem to shimmer in the air.

Later, as the free folk are passing through the Wall Tormund Giantsbane mentions to Jon Snow that the destroyed horn was a fake; Mance never found the true Horn. Tormund says to Jon,

“She burned that fine big horn, aye. A bloody sin, I call it. A thousand years old, that was. We found it in a giant’s grave, and no man o’ us had ever seen a horn so big. That must have been why Mance got the notion to tell you it were Joramun’s. He wanted you crows to think he had it in his power to blow your bloody Wall down about your knees. But we never found the true horn, not for all our digging. If we had, every kneeler in your Seven Kingdoms would have chunk’s o’ ice to cool his wine all summer.”

After the first men came to westeros and settled, after the long night came and went, the andals invaded westeros. Andals took with them their new found religion called the faith of Seven. In the present time of westeros that is the religion most people believes in including the Riverlands & Stormlands. It's important to know that a lot of the families and dynasties that live in westeros did not originate in westeros. All of them came from the lands of Essos except the children of the forest according to history.

The Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, the king on the Iron Throne, claims to be the King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men.
You can see & read both in the show and the books, whenever Eddard delivers a sentence, he describes all these 3 major ethinic groups

    The Andal Invasion

    Andals in Essos

The Andals are said to have originated in the Axe of northern Essos, although some say they came from south of the Silver Sea. They migrated and established Andalos in northwestern Essos, stretching south as far as the Flatlands and the Velvet Hills and engaging in conflict the with tribes that inhabited those lands, such as the so-called "hairy men". Legend tells that they were visited by the incarnations of the Seven, who crowned their first king, Hugor of the Hill. They learned the art of working iron from the Rhoynar who lived along the Rhoyne.

It is unknown when the Andals sailed west across the narrow sea from Andalos to Westeros, with some sources dating the Andal invasion to six thousand years ago. According to the True History (click), it occurred four thousand years ago, and some maesters claim it was only two thousand years ago

You can check more details about the andals here

    400px-The_free_cities_Adwd_map.jpg

You can check here where the andals lived in essos

    Foundation of the Faith:
In the hills of Andalos on Essos, a new religion takes shape, called the Faith of the Seven. Supposedly, the supreme deity of the Andals appears to them, guiding them into their invasion of Westeros.

The Andals cross the narrow sea and make landfall on its eastern shore at the Fingers, on what would one day become the Vale of Arryn. They come under the banner of the Faith of the Seven, with seven-pointed stars carved into their chests, wielding weapons of steel. They fight both the First Men and the children of the forest, sweeping the land much like the First Men did thousands of years before.

For centuries the Andals war with the First Men and the children in an attempt to drive them out. One by one, the six southron kingdoms fall and the weirwoods are burned. Only the Kingdom of the North remains under the rule of the First Men, in large part due to the strategically located fortress of Moat Cailin resisting multiple attempts to take it and thereafter serving as the door between North and South. Even though the North remain secure, the children of the forest begin their slow withdrawal from the lands of men, retreating deeper into their forests and north of the Wall.

Later on, the Iron Islands also fall to the Andals, ending the first line of kings ruling there uncontested for over a thousand years, originating from Urron Greyiron. Unlike in the other regions, however, Andals are assimilated to the native beliefs of the Old Way and the Drowned God.

    An Andal killing First Men

    Battle of the Seven Stars

    Battle_of_the_Seven_Stars.jpg

The Battle of the Seven Stars was a massive battle that took place at the foot of the Giant's Lance during the Andal invasion of the Vale. Septon Mallow wrote an account of the battle. The First Men of the Vale were defeated, and dominion over the Vale was claimed by House Arryn and their Andal supporters. (Click For More Details)

    Culture Brought By Andals

Andal culture is marked by the strong influences it has had on the culture of the Seven Kingdoms. The Andals brought the Faith of the Seven to Westeros and with it the warrior tradition of the knight. The Andals used iron, while the First Men used bronze. The Andals also brought a superior writing system that supplanted the First Men's runes.

According to George R. R. Martin, hardly any Westerosi are pure Andal or First Man after thousands of years of interbreeding.

    Valyrian Freehold

    latest

The Targaryans and the dragons play a very important role in the song of Ice & Fire. They are originated from the freehold of Valyria. Once a great Empire which fell later due to unknown circumstances. The cause is most probably natural.

    400px-Valyria_ASOS_map.png

On Essos, the peaceful sheep-herding folk of the Valyrian peninsula find dragons lairing in the Fourteen Fires, an immense chain of volcanoes extending across the neck of the peninsula. The Valyrians tame the dragons with magic, which gives them the means to gain influence over the area. The Valyrian Freehold is established. In its capital, Valyria (Click), magic flourishes, topless towers rise toward the heavens where dragons soar, stone sphinxes gaze down through eyes of garnet, and smiths forge swords of legendary strength and sharpness.

The Fourteen Flames is an immense chain of volcanoes extending across the neck of the Valyrian peninsula. There were deep mines beneath the Fourteen Flames. The Fourteen Flames lit the Freehold’s nights of old

    Dragonlords

    001c305526ef5de35321449717991bf2.jpg

The Freehold of Valyria was ruled by the lords freeholder, powerful noble families. The most powerful of these were the dragonlords. There were 40 noble families of Dragonlords.

Dragonlord was the title for members of the forty noble families that vied to actually rule the Valyrian Freehold. They were called dragonlords because they could ride and control dragons, whom they controlled with whips, horns and sorcery. They were strikingly (some say inhumanly) beautiful. It had long been the custom amongst the dragonlords of Valyria to wed brother to sister, to keep the bloodlines pure.

The Targaryens were one of the great dragonlord families, but far from the most powerful, They are also the last known dragonlord house to survive since Doom of Valyria with dragons. They members of House Targaryen were known as dragonlords in Westeros, even after the death of their dragons.

Next on I'll talk about the rise of the Valyrian Empire & eventually it's doom :)

    Rise Of The Valyrian Empire

    Conquest Of Ghiscar

In the early days of Valyria, the Old Empire of Ghis dominated and controlled much of Essos. The Ghiscari attempted to stop Valyria's expansion and the burgeoning freehold was involved in a series of great wars against the Old Empire. The Ghiscari lockstep legions attacked Valyria five times, but they could never defeat them - with the help of dragons, Valyria was able to defend and emerge victorious each time.

Finally, in the last of the Ghiscari Wars, the Valyrians marched on their capital, Old Ghis (click), razed it to the ground, and sowed its fields with salt, sulfur, and skulls, obliterating it and thereby destroying the Old Empire of Ghis. Adopting slavery from Ghis, Valyria expanded its influence over the surviving Ghiscari colonies of Slaver's Bay, and continued to conquer and colonize further.

The Dragon Symbolizes the Valyrian Empire and the Harpy Symbolizes the Old Empire Of Ghis

    The Old Empire Of Ghis

    350px-Harpy.jpg

The Old Empire of Ghis was one of the oldest known nations and cultures in the world. It reigned supreme over much of Essos. Its founding and golden age predate that of its successor, the Valyrian Freehold, by thousands of years. The Old Empire took the harpy emblem of Ghis. It depicted a fanged woman with leathery wings for arms, the legs of an eagle, and the tail of scorpion, clutching a thunderbolt in her talons.

At its height Ghis fielded highly disciplined legions of lockstep soldiers (click) that were reputed to be nearly unbeatable on the battlefield. The architecture of Ghis was dominated by massive brick towers and pyramids built using slave labor. Its symbol was the harpy. The Ghiscari expanded as far as Sothoryos, founding Gorosh as a penal colony.

You should remember Danerys' Unsullied. The Unsullied have been referred to as the lockstep legions come again as they are absolutely obedient, absolutely loyal, and utterly without fear.

During Dany's Reign of the Slavers' Bay, The Sons of Harpy raise attacks against her. It's to be known that this name symbolizes the Harpy from Old Ghis (click)

With the destruction of Ghis, the Old Empire collapsed and most of the original Ghiscari bloodline was wiped out. The surviving populations of the empire rebuilt what they could from the wreckage. The outlying colonies of Slaver's Bay (click) rose to prominence: Astapor (click), Yunkai (click), and Meereen (click). These cities established themselves as a hub of the global slave trade and became extremely wealthy. The island city of New Ghis (click) was also founded.
