First things first – it’s normal, healthy and perfectly natural to masturbate. If you have been told stories that it can stunt your growth or make you go blind these are just stupid myths and not true at all. Masturbation is a normal thing to do and many people do it. In fact, surveys suggest that approximately 95 per cent of teenage males and 70 per cent of teenage girls admit to masturbating. Chances are the true percentages are actually even higher than this because many people won’t admit to masturbating because they feel guilt, shame or embarrassment about it. This is probably because many years ago people thought of masturbation as something which was wrong or dirty. It isn’t.
It is a very personal and private thing but there is nothing wrong with exploring your own body.
What is masturbation?

Masturbation is where people explore and rub their penis or vagina to get a nice feeling. It is sometimes called wanking, a hand job, pleasuring yourself or jerking off. People tend to do it in private but sometimes when they are in a relationship they might like their partner to watch.
Masturbation in males usually ends in ejaculation, which is a feeling of intense pleasure which you get when sperm comes out of your penis. This is sometimes called ‘coming’. Don’t worry about using all your sperm up masturbating because you can expect to carry on producing sperm throughout your whole life.
How often should you masturbate?

There is no right or wrong answer to this. It is down to personal preference. Some people masturbate several times a day, some once a week, once a year or not at all. It is totally up to the individual.
Surveys suggest around 80 per cent of males and 50 per cent of females begin to masturbate between the age of 10 and 15.
Studies also show that most males masturbate regularly during that time – perhaps because it is a new experience – but after 17 they tend to masturbate less frequently. Some people masturbate daily, or even more frequently, well into their 20s and sometimes far beyond.
Is it wrong?

Absolutely not! Masturbation is a very private thing but it is also a normal and natural thing to do. There is no need to feel embarrassed or ashamed about it. It is also a safe method for enjoying sexual pleasure without some of the risks you take when you actually have sex with another person – such as sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) or pregnancy.
Benefits

There are actually many health benefits of masturbation and having an orgasm or ejaculating (releasing sperm). This is because it makes your body produce a pleasure hormone called epinephrine which makes you feel relaxed, happy and contented. In fact, some doctors say masturbation can actually stop depression, stress and make you feel good about yourself.
