Fitting a 3G modem (Huawei E220 USB 3G Modem, capable of 7.2mbps) into Amtek T700 is fairly challenging. First of, we had to find the best position to fit this modem. It turns out, placing Huawei E220 right on top of memory module is the best location. We like this place for a number of reasons:
  1. There’s least work involved, e.g. alteration to the casing
  2. It’s near the location where we want to put the SIM card connector/reader, therefore minimizing any wires running around on top of mobo
  3. And best of all, we can’t find any other place to fit the modem otherwise : )

In the pic above, antenna is placed right next to the cooling fan with a tiny cable connecting it back to the Huawei modem unit. We place the SIM card reader/connector right next to modem in order to have shortest wires possible between them.

We also had to cut off some plastics on the back casing. This is to accommodate Huawei modem which would otherwise hit these fins. So, shortening the fins works the magic.

We don’t like making the SIM card housing from scratch. We’re too lazy. So we make do by cutting off some plastic from Huawei E220 casing.

This is how SIM card enters the UMPC, from the right side of Amtek T700.

The modem itself is capable of getting HSDPA, UMTS, EDGE and GPRS signal. It connects at 7.2mbps, but in reality, the cellular operator never allows it more than 1.1mbps. We test this a number of times via speedtest.net. At least not in the area where we’re testing this, ie. Jakarta.

Happy little Amooba Origami UMPC surfing with a now-internal HSDPA modem.
