North Central Provincial Council to be dissolved
[2008-05-12 12.45pm] Presidential Secretariat sources disclose the President has decided to dissolve the present North Central Provincial Council and hold elections immediately.
Speaking to ‘Lanka Dissent’, a senior official of the Presidential Secretariat said that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has requested North Central Chief Minister, Bertie Premalal Dissanayake to dissolve the Provincial Council immediately.
The such dissolution will only allow time for few political groups to register with the Elections Commissioner as recognized political parties.
New political parties cannot be registered during an election period, that is defined in law as the period between the announcement of the election and the release of final results of that election.
Accordingly, following the conclusion of the Eastern Provincial elections yesterday (May 11th), any party or group could register themselves as a recognized political party until the Commissioner of Elections announces another election.
