Are DVDs bought from Amazon taxed here?

I had to pay half the value of a DVD I bought in taxes when DHL delivered it to me.

If you opt to have it sent as a gift, are you still liable for taxes? If anyone has knowledge and experience regarding this, please share it with me. Thanks in advance
