World Cup meeting in Colombo called off

    India angered by Ranatunga’s remarks

    By Bipin Dani

Mumbai: The Indian cricket board has called off the Central Organising Committee (COC) of the World Cup 2011 meeting which was scheduled to take place in Colombo on Friday. Nobody in Sri Lanka wants to officially cite the true reason for calling it off and even the Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary said that Sharad Pawar “has no time on that day".

But apparently the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sharad Pawar is reported to be unhappy with the recent remarks made by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board chairman Arjuna Ranatunga.

Ranatunga’s criticism of the IPL (Indian Premier League) for not making "participation" payments to his board and calling the 20-Twenty matches “maggies and noodles” is reported the BCCI.

When India lost the first Test badly in Colombo Ranatunga accused the Indian team of playing 20-Twenty cricket.

During the prize distribution ceremony after the second Test at Galle the organisers invited Upul Chandana who played in the rebel Indian Cricket League on stage which has also angered Pawar, it is learnt.

The meeting is now likely to be shifted to some other country. Senior cricket board officials from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh were to meet in Colombo to discuss the organising of the World Cup, the grounds and logistical arrangements.

Pawar is the chairman and Sri Lanka's Sujeewa Rajapakse is the treasurer of the committee.
