The Australian Naval Ship HMAS “Melbourne” arrived in the port of Colombo on 22nd January 2011 on a goodwill visit. It was ceremonially welcomed by the Sri Lanka Navy in accordance with naval traditions on arrival.

HMAS Melbourne is one of the Royal Australian Navy's four Adelaide Class guided missile frigates (FFG). The ship is a long-range escort capable of area air defence, surface and undersea warfare, surveillance, reconnaissance and interdiction. It can counter simultaneous threats from aircraft, surface vessels and submarines.

The ship commissioned in 1992 is 138.1 meters in length and has a displacement of 4200 tons. The ship complement consists of 28 officers and 191 sailors and it sails under the command of Commander Michael John Harris of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The ship's motto is 'VIRES ACQUIRIT EUNDO', which translates as 'She Gathers Strength As She Goes'. The ship sails back on 27th and the ship’s crew is scheduled to participate in a series of programmes arranged by the Sri Lanka Navy to enhance the friendly relations between the two Navies.
