Protected Rexton (bullet-proof) vehicles made in Sri Lanka by Micro Cars Ltd are to be exported to Pakistan, Bangladesh and India in addition to being available to the local market as well.
The company has commenced production of these vehicles in collaboration with an Israeli motor vehicle company and there is a good demand for such vehicles in neighbouring countries, said the Chairman Micro Cars Ltd Dr.
This vehicle will be sustainable for any kind of attack, including shootings, claymore, and land mines.
The cost will be half that of a similar imported vehicle, he said. Micro Cars has the capacity to manufacture 300 cars per annum which will save a large amount of foreign exchange.
The company plans to improve the passenger transport system in the country by supplying locally manufactured buses. Dr. Perera said that his company has already launched a new 40-seater bus and another 52-seater air conditioned bus will be launched along with a container carrier Prime Mover shortly.
He noted that Micro cars will step in to provide a better transport service for the people in the north as they have to spent large sums of money to travel to Colombo by air. He added that, their bus service can be offered at a reasonable price of Rs.1000 to travel to Colombo from Jaffna.
Micro Cars is ready to provide these comfortable buses as soon as the roads are opened for normal traffic, he said. Micro Cars is the first motor vehicle industry in Sri Lanka to receive ISO 9001-2008 certification.
