Mumbai: Axed veteran Sri Lankan batsman Sanath Jayasuriya yesterday requested his country’s president Mahinda Rajapaksa to intervene on his behalf after he was dropped from the side to tour the West Indies for three one-dayers.
Sri Lanka's four-man selection panel of Ashantha de Mel (chairman), Don Anurasiri, Ranjith Madurusinghe and Jayantha Seneviratne) spoke to both Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan- who was also not selected, before naming the Sri Lanka squad, it is learnt.
“Muralitharan has been rested but Jayasuriya has been dropped as he is not part of the plan for the 2011 World Cup”, a Sri Lankan source said.
Jayasuriya has failed to pass 50 in his last 20 one-day innings scoring 305 runs at an average of only 15.25.
