  • We're done with 2008. It's been a middling year, and here's a list of big-screen spectacular releases to look forward to next year. Things can only get better.

    Chandni Chowk To China
Akshay Kumar strikes again. The Kung Fu Hustle style trailer is the the funnest looking in a long time, and Nikhil Advani's far too polished a director to let his scripts get completely asinine. Not that it matters, when its a masala film promising the spectacular and Kumar -- the man who doesn't seem capable to planting a mainstream foot wrong -- is in the centre of things.

    3 Idiots

Ace director Rajkumar Hirani finally moves outside of his fabulous Munna and Circuit characters to take on the Indian education system. The director has confirmed that this film is an original script, and not based on Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone (a good piece of news to all of those people who sat through the execrable Hello). Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi make for an interesting cast, but we're all just waiting to see Hirani bat again.

    My Name Is Khan

Karan Johar seems to completely have dropped the K, and the subject matter for his next Shah Rukh Khan starrer is intriguing, to say the least: Khan plays a man targetted at an airport because of his last name and his religion, and that discrimination gives rise to many a question. Then again, the film's been written by Shibani Bhatija, who wrote Fanaa and Kidnap, so maybe we shouldn't go in expecting answers.

    Kaminay

Vishal Bhardwaj leaves Shakespeare out of the mix this time with this magnificently named project, starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra

. Remember, this is the man who showed us just how capable Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor were, so it's wise to prepare for fireworks.
The film's story is still closely guarded, but all we know is that Taare Zameen Par writer Amole Gupte plays the villain in the film. Whatever, man. We're sold on Bhardwaj and that fantastic title.

    Kambakkht Ishq

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor star in this massive budget film about an Indian stuntman who becomes a sensation across Hollywood. The film features several prominent Hollywood players, including Sylvester Stallone
    mag-glass_10x10.gif
, Carmen Electra, Bondgirl Denise Richards and Superman star Brandon Routh.
It's quite a coup by Bollywood standards, and one hopes for an entertaining evening of big-screen proportions.

    30slide7.jpg

    Imtiaz Ali's next film

After making Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met on a decidedly comedic note, director Imtiaz Ali has chosen to tread the relatively unpopulated romantic-drama waters for his next film, one starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. The film is currently jetting around the world and shooting everywhere, and we're just curious to see what Imtiaz does next.

    30slide8.jpg

    Alladin

Sujoy Ghosh's film has been in production for the longest time. Ritesh Deshmukh stars as Alladin while Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of the genie in this rather zany take on the original. The film is a special effects spectacular and by now, we just want to see what in the world has taken this long to make.

    30slide9.jpg

    Wake Up Sid

Director Ayaan Mukherji makes his debut with this film that promises to be interesting simply because of its unconventional pairing. Ranbir Kapoor, pinup boy-to-be and current heart-throb of the masses, cast opposite indie queen Konkona Sensharma? We're waiting to see how these two very different genre-representatives get along, and the title sounds fun too.

    30slide10.jpg

    Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Katrina Kaif stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. That's right, the socially aware blockbuster-maker is back with a film that sounds pretty darned unusual. The casting is a bit of a coup, the kind of casting that leaves these kids out to fend for themselves without being able to fall back on a massive banner or Akshay Kumar. Salman Khan, however, does make an appearance.

    thanks, some more movies

    London Dreams

    e262.jpg

    Director: Vipul Shah
Cast: Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan, Asin

Vipul Shah's love for UK continues with next year's big release, London Dreams. The movie follows two aspiring pop stars played by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan, both of whom fall in love with the South Indian beauty Asin. The movie looks to cash in on the Hum Dil Chuke Sanam male pair and the success of Asin in Ghajini. No more running around the Big Ben, please.

    Kites

    e263.jpg

    Director: Anurag Basu
    Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Kangana
    Ranaut, Barbara Mori

Kites is an intense romance with the kites in the title representing the meeting of two lovers who are then set adrift by circumstances much like kites are wont to do when being flown by experts. It seems a bit of a stretch but then there's no accounting for producer's fancies especially when the name has to necessarily start with a K.

    Delhi Belly

    e271.jpg

    Director: Abhinav Deo
Cast: Imran Khan, Kunal Roy Kapoor, Vir Das, Shehnaz
    Treasurywala

Imran Khan played the cute boy-next-door, followed by a menacing (tee hee) kidnapper. His newest avatar sees him as a comedian in Aamir Khan?s next production, Delhi Belly. The language used in the film is reportedly ?strong? and looks to appeal to a niche market in the country and international audiences with this comedy in English. The film is directed by Abhinav Deo, son of yesteryear?s star, Ramesh Deo.

    New York

    e273.jpg

    Director: Kabir Khan
Cast: John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh

New York is a contemporary story of friendship set against the larger than life backdrop of a city often described as the centre of the world. For most of us, larger events in the world are just headlines in the newspapers but these events can change our lives... forever. New York is one such story of three young friends whose beautiful lives are turned upside down by events beyond their control.

    Luck by Chance

    e276.jpg

    Director: Zoya Akhtar
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Rishi Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Isha Sharwani, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Kapoor, Aly Khan

Zoya Akhtar?s star-studded release Luck By Chance is yet another look into the life of Bollywood stardom after OSO and Khoya Khoya Chand. Konkana Sen Sharma plays the aspiring starlet, who will share the screen with Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Rishi Kapoor, Dimple Kapadia, Juhi Chawla among others. The film explores the role fate plays in Bollywood.

    What?s Your Raashee?

    e281.jpg

    Director: Ashutosh Gowariker
    Cast: Harman Baweja, Priyanka Chopra

Ashutosh Gowariker brings a hilarious book to life with What?s Your Raashee? The movie is an adaptation of a Gujarati novel by Shri Madhu called Kimball Ravenswood. The romcom gives Harman Baweja just ten days to win over the love of his life - Priyanka Chopra (minus annoying stuffed toys mercifully).
The on-off real life pair?s onscreen chemistry was thanda in Harman?s debut film. Maybe they should consult their horoscopes on this one before placing their bets on it.

    ==================================================
    Billu Barber

    e284.jpg

    Director: Priyadarshan
Cast: Irrfan Khan, Lara Dutta, Shah Rukh Khan

After Aamir Khan last year, SRK adapts a movie from down South. Billu Barber is loosely based on the friendship between Krishna and Sudhama, and on the Malyalam Rajnikanth hit, Kuselan. SRK plays himself in the movie and Irrfan Khan plays a small town barber. The movie explores the friendship between rich and poor, and the dire consequences it has on Billu?s life. The first time combination of the biggest star Bollywood has to offer and the most promising actor is surely a formula for success.
