The Federal Government just declared a POWER GRID EMERGENCY across 13 states + D.C

Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia... and Washington D.C. The Department of Energy just issued an emergency order to PJM, the grid that powers 65 MILLION people... running Oct 13 through Oct 16. Continued HOT temperatures are straining the grid... so power plants are now allowed to run PAST their pollution limits just to keep the lights on... And as a LAST RESORT before rolling blackouts... PJM can force data centers and other big power users off the grid and onto their backup generators. The grid could have as little as ~900 MW of cushion left... This is NOT normal.

Real story, and it's about the US. Here's the why:
The US Department of Energy declared the emergency for the PJM grid region — 13 states plus Washington DC, serving 65+ million people. Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed the order on October 12, and it runs through October 16.
The trigger is a squeeze from both sides:
    • Demand spiking — unusually warm fall weather is pushing electricity use to around 111,500 megawatts, way above normal for October
    • Supply squeezed — about 61,591 MW of generation is offline for autumn maintenance, plus planned transmission outages
    • PJM warned the system could come within 900 MW of its reserve margin — that's razor thin
The order lets PJM fire up extra generating units and, as a last resort, call on backup generation (including from big users like data centers) before things get critical. The pressure is worst around Maryland, Virginia, and the DC metro area.
Officials say residential customers don't need to do anything right now — it's a preventive move, not a rolling-blackout situation yet.
