A bomb threat forced authorities in China's remote northwestern Xinjiang Autonomous Region to bar a plane from landing in the city of Urumqi, the Chinese state-run news agency Xinhua reported Sunday.
Citing police sources, Xinhua said the plane -- which was en route from Afghanistan -- initially had been reported as hijacked. It returned to Afghanistan, where it landed, Xinhua reported.
Aviation authorities issued an order prohibiting the plane from landing in Urumqi, the news agency said. However, police and emergency vehicles had rushed to the airport to respond if necessary.
Xinjiang was the scene of clashes last month between Han Chinese and the province's Uyghur population, a predominantly Muslim ethnic group.
