The Ceylon Electricity Board will be staging protests in 19 locations islandwide today. The protests are due to commence at 3pm today, and 4 of the locations will be within the greater Colombo area.

Speaking to The Morning, Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Employees’ Union Convener Ranjan Jayalal confirmed that the protests are to be staged in objection to the Yugadanavi deal and the Government, which has not taken any action to even heed the voices of the employees.

“The protests will begin at 3pm today. Employees will be gathering to protest and all we want is the best for the country. This deal needs to discussed with us. The Government does not even want to hear our voices. So, we decided to take it to the streets,” said Jayalal.

He went on to say that on the 3rd of November, a larger scale protest is going to be held, with all CEB and Ports Authority employees arriving into Colombo.

“All employees will be arriving to Colombo. It will be big and then it will be difficult to ignore us and our voices,” he said.

When further inquired whether the protests which will include all employees would disrupt the electricity service to people, Jayalal confirmed that the people will not be inconvenienced by the protests and a breakdown team will always be available in the case of a technical malfunction.
