This thought came to my mind after reading a post here on EK which shared the views of Samantha Bhadra questioning the legitimacy of Tooth Relic at Dalada Maligawa.

Here's the deal. If tooth relic is indeed is a remain from Buddha himself can't we just extract trapped DNA inside and clone a Buddha??

Would be so cool to have one of those Buddha people walking around in the world for real

Sadly that's not how things really work. It's materialistic biologist who believe genes with nurture can decides everything that happens in one's life. In Buddhism there's a non materialistic existence at work too. One day people will be able to create a body like that of prince Siddartha. But without a vijjana he'd just be a normal guy.

    cloning is not so easy...

theoretically your idea is possible but cloning a humans and complex animals is not so easy. technology has not developed so far yet. may be in another 2 or 3 decades......even then his vijjjana would not be possible to recreated.

Buddha is claimed to be a pretty smart person with the capacity to comprehend the entire universe. Such a person would require an enormous, certainly above average brain capacity.. so even if the person so created does not inherit the same vijjana he certainly would have the necessary brain circuitry to become a world class genius.

We will at least be able to train him to become a physicist to solve natural mysteries

That's where you got it wrong. No doubt he inherited an above average intelligence. But what is intelligence ? Modern IQ tests are designed to test the ability to identify patterns and abstract thinking. Cognition isn't defined by genes alone. Nurture plays an insignificant role in the development process of one's abilities. I've recently read a study that put the concept of time into test. It concluded that mother tongue affects one's guesses about time. So unless he was raised in a western culture it's doubtful if he would even succeed in becoming a proper physicist.

And it sounds as though you think all those theories (Abhidamma) of Lord Buddha's was founded using mere reasoning. That's where I'll have to disagree. His understanding was based on his spiritual abilities. Genes don't pass such a thing.

I'm not sure whether we are able to clone a complete human from such a thing like a tooth. But even if we were able to do so, i feel he would be just another guy like us :P buddha is some special state of human mind as i think..cloned person may have the traits of buddha, like high intelligence, physical attributes etc. But real buddha is in the mind, not in the body :)

I'm pretty sure that he will be a regular north indian guy.

No mate, He was near to Nepal (Buddha Gaya). Most of them similar to Arrayan. white complexion, tall big ears. Not even Mongolian face. Nepalese believe in blue eyes as well. Ancient Lumbini was a magnificent civilization, until it suddenly vanished in the sixth century B.C.

well a tooth is a viable piece to extract a DNA sample, since those relics are only about 2500 something years old there should be some usable DNA left. but we can't clone shit with just DNA:lol:, but we sure can learn a lot about buddha (if the tooth relic is real:dull:), by running an ancestry test we can know about his ethnicity. also we can find out about any diseases or illnesses buddha suffered
