The races on newly laid road sur faces are expected to showcase exotics including the Lamborghini Diablo, Mosler MT900, Aston Mar tin, and Porsche 911 Carreras, including the Subaru Impreza STI, Mitsubishi Evolution, Ford Laser, Nissan March, Honda Civic SIR and the world famous Morris Mini Minor and Formula Ford and many other famous race cars presently run locally.

Colombo drag race on November 5

Ceylon Motor Sports Club (CMSC) and Carlton Sports Network (CSN) will conduct the first ever “Colombo Drag Race” on the November 5 at Green Path, in Colombo 7.
A drag race is an acceleration contest from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance. The distance being 375m, these contests are started by means of an electronic device commonly called a “Christmas Tree”. Upon leaving the starting line, each contestant races upto the finish line, and slows down to a greatly reduced speed after the passing the finish line.
Sri Lanka Automobile Sport (SLAS), the governing body of Motor Sport in Sri Lanka, has given permission to the organizers to conduct the meet, while the organizers too have called for entries, putting in place the required safety as recommended by the Governing Body. Seat belts, Helmets and overalls being mandatory will create the benchmark, while proper scrutinizing will be conducted on the cars to ensure that they are safe to run.
Professional Tag Heuer Electronic timing will be used by the organizers to time the contestants, while the start and finish will have live cameras to ensure competitors do not have false starts as well as monitor Photo Finishes. Seen for the first time will be the Christmas tree start, which will be a first in Sri Lanka.
One of the unique things about the Drag Race will be that you have to enter a standard car into a class mentioned above, and this car could be your everyday car which is used to go shopping. The organizers’ have introduced two classes for Hybrid cars, as it was noticed that a lot of new cars being imported were Hybrids.
Carlton Sports Network is busy preparing a fabulous array of stalls and music which will keep the spectators well fed and in a good motoring spirit. This would be the first time such an event of this scale would be conducted at night, hence all security and proper international safety protocols will be adhered to, the organizers expect the start the first rounds by 5 pm.The winners of the events will be awarded trophies as will as a few surprises which the organizers wish to keep a secret.
