In 2002 three teenagers, tired of the meaningless music being pumped into Sri Lankan veins through the mainstream, got an idea to form a band and realize the potency of the one pure form of music they all loved, Heavy Metal. At the time they barely knew the rudiments of instrumentation, and actually getting a band off the ground seemed like an unrealistic dream for the 16 year old school mates. But as time went on, there was a significant improvement, and at the beginning of 2004 the guys decided to take this more seriously after realizing the possible potential for a Metal Band in the Sri Lankan music industry, and the name ‘Tantrum’ was born.
The band's style is considered Thrash Metal, with a touch of technical Death Metal with various melodic elements. Classical, Blues, Jazz & Eastern elements are also influential to the band when creating music.
The band recorded and released their first single titled “The Destroyer” which became a Number 1 hit on the local chart show (TNL’s SL Hot 10). This earned Tantrum some recognition in the metal scene, and during this time the band also joined Rock Company, an organization promoting the great Rock/Metal bands in Sri Lanka. Soon afterwards, Tantrum released their 2nd single titled “Alone”, which proved that the band had great talent and it impressed many of the listeners, and so Tantrum had the fortune of starting off with two smash singles. Tantrum was also one of the few bands to take part in TNL Onstage (a battle of the bands like competition in Sri Lanka) for the 1st time & come out winners of the competition. This was in 2005. Tantrum then released an EP titled "The Destruction Begins" in 2006 and soon after the band went through a major line up change. Currently the line up is as follows -
Javeen Soysa - Lead Vocals & Bass Guitar
Akila Peiris - Rhythm & Lead Guitar
Arjun Dhas - Rhythm & Lead Guitar
Tharaka Senevirathne - Drums
The band cannot wait to get out there and delight the Sri Lankan fans of Pure Heavy Metal by providing them with awesome music to break their necks moshing to. Tantrum is looking forward to open the floodgates to a whole new level of music, and take Sri Lankan heavy metal to greater heights, and their journey has just begun…
