Until yesterday I thought Debit cards are a nice thing but it seems its not.

Yesterday I went to a Insurance Company in Moratuwa to pay my life insurance. I gave my Sampath bank VISA card and the lady swiped it on the machine, a few seconds later she said my card got rejected and it did not print! I had lots of money in it and it was weird. So I gave my NDB VISA Card and the transaction was successful.

When I came home I called the Sampath bank and they told that Rs. 3,512.00 has been charged from my Sampath Card! I told them what happened yesterday and today and they said I will have to WAIT 2-3 days for the issue to be corrected!!!:no: Until then Rs. 3,512.00 is stuck!! What if it was something like Rs. 10,000? I would be bankrupt for 2-3 days!!

Someone (I) should write to the paper but THERE IS NO MEDIA FREEDOM IN SRI LANKA TODAY!!!

This happens whn the money is stuck between the payment gateway & ur account. There are several reasons for this issue, most of the times this happens whn the merchant request for the money but the there is a delay of response from the banks end, due to the delay the merchants payment request stops after few seconds but after that the bank responds then the money is between the payment gateway & ur account (money is already withdrawn from the account but is not with the merchant)

No reason to blame the merchant, blame the bank!

The payment processor was BOC... no I can imagine why.... (when did government institutions rock? they always wet their pants)... Btw take a look at my first post... if BOC followed a fail safe procedure this wouldn't have happened ;)

Btw, the Sri Lankan Procedure makes sure the bank charges the money at all costs... it does not think of the customer at all.... that what happens when you live in a 3rd class economy with cash flow problems.

No dude... this is one common+rare case with all the credit & debit cards, ever there are hundreds of cases with Barclays & HSBC everyday, so its not just cos BOC being a local bank. Anyways u will get ur money back in ur account, its just simple a reinstate the bank will do it for u.

One thing we all must understand is these local banks are the backbone of the country's economy, no one talks abt the effort they put to balance the county's input/output, trade balance, capital account etc.. all these private banks are just money shops, they dnt care a shit abt the county's economic sustainability. so invest ur money in a local bank & be a proud citizen. try to promote them without blaming them. I work for a foreign bank, but this is the bitter truth.
    :)

Sri Lanka is following the strict ISO standards in Card transactions. If not they we will not be endorsed by VISA and MASTERCARD.

Well I can.... did I say I couldn't? But not everyone is rich like me you know... :)

But I'm not like other rich people who are big headed... who think its OK for these to happen... personally it should not happen... there is always a solution. We must think in the perspectives of others... not only our selves...
