    Cadillac Escalade Platinum

    sladeplat.jpg

Making its world premiere alongside the upcoming Escalade Hybrid, Cadillac announced the Platinum edition will come to market in the spring of 2008 as the most luxurious model in the Escalade lineup. It rounds out a full series of Cadillac Platinum models, including the XLR Roadster, DTS luxury sedan and STS performance sedan. Each model in the Platinum lineup is characterized by elegant cabins featuring handcrafted leather, advanced technology and unique design details throughout.

"The new Platinum edition elevates and extends Escalade's position as the large SUV of choice among luxury consumers," said Jim Taylor, Cadillac general manager. "The growing Platinum series highlights the handcrafted details and technical sophistication of Cadillac's overall product renaissance."

    Advanced technologies
Offered on Escalade and the extended-length Escalade ESV, the Platinum edition includes a blend of technical innovations and aesthetic enhancements. Escalade Platinum will be the world's first SUV to be equipped with Cadillac's advanced Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) technology.

Magnetic Ride Control, originally developed for performance vehicles such as the STS sedan, XLR Roadster and Chevrolet's legendary Corvette, is the world's fastest reacting suspension system and gives the Escalade Platinum more precise body motion control. It is a real-time damping system – "reading" the road in 1-milisecond intervals – that replaces conventional mechanical-valve shocks with electronically controlled shocks filled with a synthetic fluid containing minute iron particles. Under the presence of magnetic charge, the iron particles align to provide damping resistance almost instantly.

    Segment-first, innovative LED headlamps
Escalade Platinum will be the first SUV – and one of the first vehicles of any kind – to offer Light Emitting Diode (LED) headlamps. Used previously only on concept vehicles or exotic sports cars, LED headlamps mark another step in Cadillac's application of advanced lighting technology and design.

LED headlamps emit a greatly more precise light pattern, while emulating the characteristics of natural daylight much more closely than traditional auto lighting. LEDs are environmentally friendly, using much less power and lasting more than 20 times longer than traditional halogen bulbs. LED headlamps will be an enhancement added to the Escalade Platinum in the summer of 2008, shortly after the start of production of the Platinum model itself in the spring of 2008.

"Escalade is world renown for making a distinctive design statement," Taylor said, "With the introduction of the world's first large luxury SUV hybrid as well as the new Platinum edition, Cadillac Escalade is now bringing some of the world's most sophisticated automotive technologies into the luxury SUV category."

    Dramatic exterior, elegant interior
Escalade Platinum also elevates the already-dramatic design of Escalade. The exterior features a unique front fascia and grille patterned after Cadillac's acclaimed and hot-selling CTS sport sedan. The Platinum includes unique 22-inch wheels and wears exclusive Platinum exterior badges.

The cabin is the latest example of Cadillac's 21st-century return to handcrafted luxury details. The instrument panel, center storage console and door trim are wrapped and stitched by hand. They feature decorative French seams that convey an elegantly tailored look and feel. Materials include rich leather on the instrument panel, with unique wood inlays and aluminum trim.

Aniline leather is unique to the Escalade Platinum and is used to trim the first- and second-row seats. Contrasting-color stitching is used on the French seams for a distinctive, luxurious appearance and the seatbacks feature embroidered Cadillac wreath and crest insignias. The leather-covered seats are comfortable and convenient, with the industry-exclusive power fold-and-tumble second-row seat feature that eases access to the third-row seat.

Additional standard interior features include Platinum-specific door sills and floor mats, a heated steering wheel and heated and cooled cup holders and a power liftgate that opens and closes with the touch of a button.

Also, the DVD entertainment system adds screens integrated into each front seat headrest, in addition to the existing roof mounted screen. Each front-row headrest screen has its own driver and input controls. The headrest units can be operated independently or in tandem. This system enables passengers in different seats to watch or listen to different entertainment choices, while leaving ultimate control with the driver. Escalade Platinum models will include the acclaimed Bose 5.1 Digital Surround system, as well as the eight-inch touch screen for DVD-based navigation and control of the DVD, CD, MP3 and XM Satellite radio entertainment.

    Plentiful power
Platinum models are powered by the Escalade's exclusive 6.2L V-8 rated at 403 horsepower (301 kW)* and 417 lb.-ft. of torque (565 Nm).* It is an all-aluminum engine that uses variable valve timing (VVT) to optimize camshaft timing to improve low-rpm torque and high-rpm horsepower. The introduction of variable valve timing through the unique, dual-equal cam phaser is the industry's first application of VVT on a mass-produced V-8 overhead-valve engine.

A Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is matched with the 6.2L engine. One of the industry's most advanced automatics, the 6L80 features clutch-to-clutch shifting and has a wide, 6.04:1 overall ratio – including two overdrive gears – that helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy

    2010 Acura RL

    33mwun5.jpg

    Overall: 8.8
    Performance:8.6
    Exterior: 6.5
    Interior: 8.8
    Safety: 10.0
    Reliability: 9.0

The 2010 Acura RL ranks 3 out of 13 Luxury Large Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 8 published reviews and test drives of the Acura RL, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 2010 Acura RL doesn't carry the same cachet as some more well-known luxury cars, but it's an excellent choice for many buyers. With outstanding cabin electronics, bulletproof Honda reliability and resale value, and a price that doesn't climb high when you start adding options, it's a great value. But some reviewers say it is underpowered for its price, and short on space for its size.

While most large luxury cars offer just slightly different takes on the same high-power formula, the Acura RL is a little different. There is no supercharged V8 offered here. That's not to say the RL isn't sporty - its unique SH-AWD system (that's "Super Handling - All Wheel Drive") means it holds a precise line in a hard corner - but the RL is more about agility than speed, and more about high-tech digital luxury than old world leather-and-wood elegance.

The RL's 3.7-liter V6 is nothing you'd find in a more affordable car. It makes a V8-like 300 horsepower. But it can be a beat slower than many V8-powered cars, and reviewers are disappointed with the car's 16/22 mpg EPA rating -- the RL actually ranks in the bottom half of its class for fuel economy even though uses two fewer cylinders than most of its rivals. That SH-AWD system, however, makes it fun to drive. The system actually helps to steer the car, varying the speed of each wheel independently to point the car into turns while maintaining excellent grip. It gives the car an entertaining personality on a winding road. But those truly looking for an athletic large sedan will want to try out the superbly balanced BMW 5-Series, or perhaps the muscular Jaguar XF.

Those cars, however, might not be the RL's most direct rivals. If the RL interests you, there's another car you should consider before laying money down. The RL's smaller sibling, the Acura TL, is worth a look. It isn't much smaller, and the two cars share so many mechanical components that buyers might find the TL essentially offers the RL experience at a discounted price.

The RL is offered in just one trim level for 2010, an available Technology Package adds a voice-controlled navigation system with traffic and weather updates that, some reviewers say, is the best one found anywhere. A Technology Package with Collision Mitigating Braking System increases the safety quotient.

    2009 Aston Martin DB9

    24g8yg5.jpg

    Overall: 9.0
    Performance:9.0
    Exterior: 9.5
    Interior: 8.0
    Safety: NA
    Reliability: NA

The 2009 Aston Martin DB9 ranks 4 out of 8 Exotic Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 36 published reviews and test drives of the Aston Martin DB9, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Most auto writers agree that the '09 DB9 conveys power and exclusivity. Its elegant and understated design oozes success.

Introduced in 2004 as the successor to Aston Martin's legendary DB7, the DB9 is admired for its elegant, heart-pounding design, luxurious appointments, and thrilling performance capabilities. "This car was created, not built," writes the Detroit News. "If God needed wheels, they'd be an Aston Martin DB9 convertible." Automobile Magazine adds, "The DB9 Volante is almost the perfect Hollywood car -- sporty enough for high-speed runs up Mulholland Drive or over Angeles Crest Highway and stylish enough to stand out on Rodeo Drive without looking pretentious or gaudy." While the DB9 isn't as sporty as its competition, auto writers are -- on balance -- impressed.

If you're in the market for an exotic sports car and want to steer clear of "pretentious" and "gaudy" rides like the Lamborghini Murcielago and Audi R8, consider the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. Not only does it feature an understated, low-profile design, but it can blast from 0 to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds. Sure, there are faster cars in this class, but few handle as well as the Scaglietti. Another great choice is the DB9's sibling, the Aston Martin Vantage.

After receiving a 20-horsepower bump in mid-2008, the DB9 carries on to the 2009 model year unchanged. It's offered in two body styles: coupe and Volante (convertible).

    Mazda MAZDA3 (2010)

    11azcsm.jpg

    Overall: 8.5
    Performance:8.7
    Exterior: 5.6
    Interior: 8.4
    Safety: 9.8
    Reliability: 5.0

The 2010 Mazda MAZDA3 ranks 6 out of 29 Affordable Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 36 published reviews and test drives of the Mazda MAZDA3, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The redesigned Mazda3's aggressively sporty performance is notable among affordable small cars, but its once-sleek exterior is now described as goofy-looking by some auto writers.

When it came time to redesign the popular Mazda3, most reviewers had the same opinion. In terms of the car's energetic engine power, solid handling and abundant sportiness -- don't mess too much with a good thing. According to our analysis, Mazda's engineers listened and delivered a 2010 model that enhances the best-loved attributes of the outgoing 3.

Still, not all of the 2010 Mazda3's new features are viewed favorably. The 3's now elongated exterior makes the sedan more aerodynamic, but most call the front grille's smiling appearance goofy-looking. In addition, the Mazda3 has more upscale amenities, including Bluetooth connectivity and heated front seats, but its optional new navigation system has a display screen that reviewers find too small to read easily.

Few affordable small cars or hatchbacks have the Mazda3's level of sportiness or fun driving experience, but reviewers say the Honda Civic compares well. Like the 3, the Civic is praised for its outstanding quality and perky performance. The Civic also has an optional navigation option -- in fact, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System is one of the most accurate and intuitive in-dash devices in the segment.

    The 2010 Mazda3 is available as a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback.

    Nissan 370Z (2010)

    2mxlh89.jpg

    Overall: 8.3
    Performance:8.7
    Exterior: 8.2
    Interior: 7.7
    Safety: NA
    Reliability: 6.0

The 2010 Nissan 370Z ranks 3 out of 5 Affordable Sports Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 21 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan 370Z, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The 370Z is a fast-paced sports coupe that offers a lot of power, prowess, style, and quality for an affordable price.

Replacing the 350Z, the 370Z coupe and all-new soft-top convertible is a faster, more capable sports performer with incredibly good looks and a quality-built interior cabin. Automobile Magazine writes, "The 370Z addresses every major complaint about the outgoing car -- namely its weight and sub par interior quality -- but maintains and, if anything, further distills the basic Z-car formula. ... On paper and in person, the new 370Z appears to be a very worthy successor to the Z-car line and, once again, a smashing sports car bargain."

The 370Z isn't, however, without flaws. Test drives report so-so fuel economy and coarse engine performance as the Z nears redline. But, considering everything that it offers, critics seem more than willing to overlook these issues. By and large, reviewers find the new Z is an incredible sports car -- especially for the price.

Those in the market for an affordable sports car should consider the hardtop convertible MX-5 Miata. It's the best of both worlds, offering top-notch sports handling in what can pass for either a coupe or convertible. For more passenger room, the Mazda RX-8 also makes a great choice -- though it can't compete with the 370Z or Miata in terms of performance. Still, keep in mind that you can upgrade to the luxury of a BMW Z4 for not too much more.

The 2010 370Z is offered in two trims: the base and Touring.

Nissan Altima Hybrid HEV Car Review

    2lbcrvs.jpg

As far as the appearance of the Nissan Altima Hybrid HEV is concerned, it looks as if it is a current Altima. The car has been adorned by rounded masses with chiseled lines, T-shaped grille, flat wheel arches, vertically stacked head lights, long semi-fast back passenger cabin and a high rear deck

The tail lights have been covered with a clear plastic to save them from damage to a large extent. All made up of hybrid technology, the car boosts a power of 170 to 198 hp which is more than usually needed. If you are looking for a full-throttle speed, then Altima Hybrid will get it quickly.

Its performance is related to less fuel consumption also as with an average of 33 mpg, it gives out excellent performance as per its size. The Nissan Altima Hybrid HEV is no more than $31,900, the amount that you will be proud to have spent for such a high performance car.
