parker! dude i havent spoken to u in ages!!!!!!!!
CMA is canadian and CIMA is UK.. theyre equal in qualification wise but if ur gonna work in Aussie SL UK and such i think CIMA is a better option... for canada and US CMA is the deal...
    but theres another thing :D
once u fully complete cima or cma (get qualified) u can apply and pay for membership of the other..
that is if uve done cima u can get cma ... and i guess it works the other way around too
    hope that helps!

Very valuable discussion thread..shame I didn't notice it earlier.

Anyway I'm now in my 2nd year of IT degree at SLIIT. After the completion of diploma I wish to transfer to either Australia or to UK to continue the rest of my degree. But from what I have heard from friends it's difficult to find a job in IT field once you have completed your studies or while working part time. Some of them while having completed their degrees still do odd jobs to make their ends meet. So I would be thankful if some body can shed some light into any other qualifications that are recognised in these countries which might give me an edge while finding a job(both part-time and after completion). I'm talking about professional qualifications such as CIMA, CCNA, SCJP or Microsoft exams. Also having prior working expierience in Sri lanka any advantage?

This is the thing bro... even u hv a degree u hv to hv a knowledge about programming too...... cuz in a degree u will get theory (mostly)... but if u can do some vendor certificate that will b also an addon ;) ;).. did u get what im saying..
industry need ppl who can perform not ppl who r good in theory  ... but i think ppl who got 1st class surely got their jobs :) ;)... So work hard sharpen ur knowledge in theory wise mean time sharpen ur programing skills also :) :).... if u wish to b a software engineer :)

Well... I did the same thing :) Completed 2 yrs at SLIIT and came to Aus.

Yes, your friends are true in a way machang. It is sort of hard to get a job in Australia without 'good' qualification or working experience. Even some of my friends who have completed Masters degrees are still doing odd jobs.

    Having said that,

If you are a good communicator and if your spoken english knowledge is good, and if you are creative - you can get a job after a good try.
Communication is the key when working in Australia especially.

Well.. don't get me wrong here now... I don't want to tell about my achievements.. But just to give you a flavour - I had some 3+ experience working in a training dept in a leading bank in SL. Plus I had some freelance experience in Software engineering/ leadership development attached to Virtusa and IFS. So after coming to Australia, even before completing the basic degree, I got a good job as a consultant in Project management. It's like that machang. If you have the ability to write a better CV and face the interview, you can get a job. (Even if it is hard!)

Microsoft, Cisco, RedHat are the main streams in Aus currently. (Not Java)
CIM, CIMA also will get some sort of an edge. (Well... CIMA - not that much. Because you have to do CPA in Australia to work as an Accountant anyway.) So strongly suggest you to do something like MCSA, CCNA, CCNP, RHCP or something if you don't have any experience.

And don't worry too much about doing odd jobs. Even I have worked as a cleaner for 2 months before getting a job. We in Australia respect each other irrespective of their cultural, religious, occupational background. So don't worry about it. Even now I feel like go and do cleaning during my free time. Because it pays you good. Sometimes better than a desk job  [honest!]

All the best buddy. Is Himadri still there @ SLIIT? She helped me so much :)

Hey thanx a lot for your help Amila and x-pert. Appreciate it a lot.

And wow x-pert you really are a expert to possess that kind of a CV. I can only envy some of your achievements. Anyway even I don't have a problem doing a cleaning job until I find a proper job. If it pays me well as you said it's all the more better:D. Don't think Himidri is anymore at SLIIT. She was there as recent as last year but now there's a new lady at the career guidance unit. Which batch were you from btw?

I am not good at Marketing machang. Since no one has answered your query, I'll try to giva a small idea... (Just a try ok. coz I don't know nothing at all about this field)

CIM - Chartered Institute of Marketing: This is a UK qualification

SLIM - Sri Lanka institute of Marketing.

So machang the main question you should ask from your self is: Should I do a Sri Lankan qualification? Or a Foreign qualification (UK)?

If you are planning to migrate to another country, CIM will give better prospects than SLIM. Even in Sri Lanka I think CIM has a higher recognition than SLIM.

One of the best Marketing guys I've met in Sri Lanka is Prasanna Perera.
    http://www.hsenidmobile.com/Profiles.html
Talk to him if you need more info about the qualifications.
Tell him Nalin Ranasinghe, who was at Commercial Bank gave you his contact :) He'll help you :D (Nalin is not me)
