    Yoji Yamada’s Samurai trilogy.

    m4OjKz0.jpg

Based on series of short stories by Shuhei Fujisawa. His stories take partings and reunions of common people and subordinate warriors as their theme. Fujisawa takes the imaginary Hirasaka clan as the stage and depicts a series of warrior images with distinctive personalities. [analysis]

Set in Japan during final years of the Edo period (
Bakumatsu, Meiji Restoration) the same period as Kurosawa's "The Seven Samurai" and Edward Zwick's "The Last Samurai". Films deal in different ways with a time when samurai still tried to live by the Code of Bushido. Even as they faced poverty & unemployment in a rapidly changing society and the shift of political power from shogunate clans to the Imperial court of Japan.

    - What's Kyoto like?

    - I had high hopes for it but it was horrible. Filthy master less samurai from all over the country everywhere cursing and swearing in dialects you can't understand. Then someone shouts 'Divine punishment! ' and the swords come out. The Kamo River's full of headless corpses all swollen up. They'll snuff out 250 years of Shoguns like the wind does a candle. What's our clan doing? Our leaders aren't thinking! How would you like to go to Kyoto? The Emperor's palace is short of guards. I'll recommend you. You'll see how things are Someone like you shouldn't be stuck in a field here right now.

    - I'm afraid you over estimate me.

    - The times are changing.

    - When they do, I'll give up samurai status and be a farmer. That's what I'm suited for.

    - You're a strange one. But you always were.

    ·······················································

    - Seibei I want to talk to you. It's about Tomoe. I asked her, half in jest, if she'd like to marry you.

    - You what?! We may be old friends, but that isn't funny!

    - She didn't take it as a joke. She said she wouldn't mind and turned all red. She was serious. Listen. I've already put her through hell marrying her to Koda. If it's all right with you, I'd like to make that up to her. I don't need an answer now, but I will within two or three days. I might have to go to Edo.

    - You've been really busy lately. What's going on?

    - You probably haven't heard. His Lordship's dead. A month ago.

    - He is? Why have they kept that from us?

    - They're not agreed on who's going to succeed him. The Castle Warden, Lord Hori, has asked the Shogun for permission to adopt His Lordship's third boy, and seize control himself. If that happens the clan will split, and blood will wash away blood. I might not come through this unscathed myself. So if you could give me an answer before I leave for Edo.

    - All right. I'll answer you. I'm very grateful to Tomoe for all she's done for my daughters. However, having her come to my house as my wife is something else again. She's a daughter of the Iinumas, a 400 koku family. She doesn't know what life is like for a 50 koku petty samurai.

    - Are you sure you're not underestimating her? She's very much her own woman.

    - It'd be fine at the start. But when it sunk in that 50 koku would be her life forever. she'd be sorry. My late wife was. Hers was a 150 koku family. She never got used to the fall in status. "Rise in the world," she told me, "or my family will grieve." She said that all the time after she got sick. I don't want to put Tomoe through that torment.

    - Tomoe's not 15 or 16. I'm sure she'd thought about what she said.

    - Now? This is vital. Wearing the finger stall? You insert the right forefinger into the vent. This prevents air from being expelled when the shot is loaded which could be disastrous. A premature discharge, causing burns and even death. Next occurs the '
ranging' of the gun. This involves four techniques: 1: Quadrant. 2: Tangent scale. 3: Breech sight and 4: Pendulum hausse. You learned these yesterday. Questions?

    - This book says the English '
Armstrong' cannon has a vent piece, so you don't have to stick your finger in it.

    - It costs more. One Armstrong costs as much as 500 of
your old matchlocks. Wars now are won by the most expensive weaponry. By money. Such is the age that is upon us.

    - Sensei. I'm sorry, but I haven't the foggiest idea what you're talking about. It'd help if you'd speak the way we're used to. Could you at least
translate all those English and Dutch words? They put my head in a whirl. The longer I sit the stupider I feel!

    - You find this amusing? Is this a time for levity? To prepare you to face an emergency with modern artillery your clan has summoned me from
Edo to this backwater! This is no laughing matter!

    - With all due respect? Sir a 'backwater'? We are hereditary vassals to the
    Tokugawa shogun.

    - I am well aware of that. I apologize.

    ·······················································

    - You're healthy again. It's about time you went home to your parents. I've been happy to take advantage of having you with me what with you knowing our house so well but that can't go on forever.

    - Being with you, and taking care of you suits me very well? Sir. Can we not go on as we are?

    - No. We can't do that.

    - Why not?

    - You are young Bright Good-natured and beautiful. You need to find a hard-working man who will cherish you have children, and be happy.

    - I've no intention of marrying again. I've learned my lesson. Rather than suffer that again. I'd much rather sit watching you eating the food I've made you with a hearty appetite and studying late into the night. If that doesn't please you.

    - I don't say that.

    - Then would you allow me to stay with you until you find a wife?

    - I don't know when that will be.

    - That's fine by me.

    - You have your own life to live! You can't waste it as my maid! So Kie go home.

    - Is that what you wish, sir?

    - I can't stand this duty I'm on now.

    - The poison tasting?

    - It's nothing but empty form. Complete foolishness. It's pointless.

    - But isn't it an honor to sit before His Lordship and taste his food?

    - Me, sit before His Lordship? A 30-koku samurai, sitting before His Lordship? We sit in a dark room off the kitchen, and they bring us the food to taste. We taste it, make sure it's all right. Then they take it way, way over to His Lordship's chamber. That's where he dines.

    ·······················································
"What the poison taster ate was sashimi from this red tsubugai. Apparently it becomes very toxic if eaten out of season. It causes dizziness, vomiting, severe headache, high fever and sometimes even death. It is like fugu pufferfish. ····· About his eyes. Toxin from that shellfish often causes blindness. My medical books describe his case exactly. Further treatment is useless"

    - Your fencing's got life in it. You've done well to come this far.

    - I've been practicing morning and night with my servant. If you wouldn't mind, I'd like to spar.

    - You can follow my moves?

    - I can sense a person's presence now.

    - What is it? What's happened? Are you after someone? A samurai? It's a cruel thing to say, but you're blind. You'd be mad to take on a good swordsman in a real duel.

    - I beg to differ. I can sense an opponent's movements. An opponent wouldn't know that. He will be off-guard.

    - I could help, depending on what the circumstances are. Who is he? How did it come about?

    - Forgive me. Honor forbids me from saying.

    - There is one way you can win. That is if you are resolved to die, and the other man wants badly to live. That's the only way. I told you something when I licensed you. Do you remember?

    - 'Be resolved you will both die in that lies victory. Life lies in resolve for death.'

    - You're all farmers' children. Do farmers destroy their own crops? Farmers grow crops. They don't destroy it.

    - Everyone has already left us helpless.

    - They took our land and then..

    - Why is it always about the land? Our parents gave them away.

    - They didn't. They were forced to sell them off. They sold a fifty-square-feet for five hundred.

    - Were they sold for free? They were paid in millions.

    - They got millions, but why didn't our parents know how to spend them wisely?

    - Who would've told them what to do?

    - The Government. The MIDCs, IT parks and hill stations were farmlands. The Government should've told them what to do with the money.

    - Each murderer has his own ideas. Just like your parents, my parents were also duped. But I became a policeman.

    - What did you achieve by becoming a policeman?

    - Did you touch the sky by becoming a criminal? Tell me.

    - The area, from where my parents were unceremoniously thrown out is where I own 100 acres of land.

    - But your father still works as a porter. I bought half an acre of land with my honest earnings. Only half an acre. My father uses it for farming. He holds his head high. If your parents can proudly hold their head high you're a worthy son.

The title 'मुळशी पॅटर्न" refers to brutal killings carried out by gangsters originating from Mulshi, Pune.
Based on rivalry of real-life gangsters Sandeep Mohol & Ganesh Marne.
Inspired by the incidents happened after the redevelopment that took place in Pune after the economic liberalisation in 1991.

The story involves a magician named Tatischeff who fails in one music hall after another and ends up in Scotland, where at last he finds one fan: A young woman who idealizes him, moves in with him, tends to him, cooks and cleans, and would probably offer sex if he didn’t abstemiously sleep on the couch. He’s a good magician on a small scale, flawless at every trick, except producing a rabbit from a hat. Tatischeff finally ends up in Edinburgh, a city that has never looked more bleak and beautiful in a film. Time has passed him by. Audiences prefer pop groups to aging magicians. He reaches the lowest stage in his career, performing in a shop window. He remains quiet, reflective, almost indifferent to the girl. This magician does what he does very well, but there’s no longer a purpose for him.

    T76bma0.jpg

Based on an unproduced script written by
French mime, director and actor Jacques Tati in 1956. Controversy surrounds Tati's motivation for the script, which was written as a personal letter to his estranged eldest daughter.

    - Why not?
    - [It's the first thing you lose.]
    - First thing you lose when?
    - [You know when.]
    - How do you know my name?
    - [We met once. Your arm is mint. You almost had me.]
    - Bruce? Bruce Yamada?
    - [Yeah. Bruce. Uh, I'm Bruce. Your arm is mint. You almost had me.]
    - Did the phone ring for you?
    - [It rang, but none of us heard it. Just you. The Grabber hears the phone, too, but he doesn't want to believe it.]
    - Why are you calling me?
    - [Your arm is mint. You almost had me. I'm glad it's you. Finney? There's a dirt section of the floor in the hallway where the tile is loose.]
    - Okay.
    - [Dig down underneath the foundation. I tried, but there wasn't time for me to dig up and out the other side.]
    - Will I have enough time? Hello? Bruce? Bruce?
    ································································
    - Hello?
    - [Don't go upstairs.]
    - Why not?
    - [It's a trap.]
    - Are you Bruce?
    - [Who's Bruce?]
    - Uh, I was just talking to Bruce.
    - [I don't know any Bruce.]
    - Who are you?
    - [I don't remember.]
    - Did you play soccer? Football?
    - [I delivered newspapers.]
    - Billy. You're Billy Showalter.
    - [Maybe.]
    - No, you're Billy.
    - [Do not... go upstairs.]
    - What is he doing?
    - [He's waiting on the other side with that fucking belt. He didn't say you can leave, so if you try, he'll punish you. He'll beat you with that belt until you pass out. It hurts, kid. You'll cry. You'll beg him to stop. We all did. But he just keeps beating you.]
    - Hello? Hello? ·····
    - [····· You said my name was Billy.]
    - Billy Showalter.
    - [Don't call me that. I don't remember it. It's not who I am now.]
    - What do you want me to call you, then? What do you remember?
    - [I told you. I was a paperboy.]
    - Okay. Paperboy.
    - [See the wall in front of you? See how the wall is separated from the floor?]
    - Yeah.
    - [I tore a long cable loose from down there. I kept it hidden.]
    - What am I supposed to do with that? Hello?
    ································································
    - Hello? Bruce? Billy... Paperboy? Hello? Hello?
    - [You don't have much time. The Grabber hasn't been sleeping. He thinks this might be it. That he's gonna figure it out.]
    - Who's gonna figure it out?
    - [His brother upstairs.]
    - Are you Griffin?
    - [Who?]
    - Griffin Stagg.
    - [Probably. It's all a little hazy, but I imagine you know all our names.]
    - Every kid does. I didn't know you.
    - [Nobody did. You spend so many years invisible, and then every kid in the state knows your name. You don't have much time.]
    - Why hasn't he killed me?
    - [You won't play the game. You have to play the game. If you don't play, he can't win.]
    - What game?
    - [Naughty Boy. If you don't play Naughty Boy, The Grabber can't beat you. And if he can't beat you, he can't move on to the next part. And the next part of Naughty Boy is his favorite part.]
    - What's the next part?
    - [You don't have much time. He's not been sleeping.]
    - You said that,
    - [Yeah, well, he is now. In his chair. He passed out waiting for you to play.]
    - What good does that do me? Wait. The door is still unlocked.
    - [The door is still unlocked.]
    - Do I just go?
    - [There's a combination lock on the inside of the storm door. It was my bike lock.]
    - Your bike lock?
    - [Yeah. He took it when he took me.]
    - What's the combination?
    - [I don't remember.]
    - Griffin.
    - [I remember being afraid I'd forget it. That's why I wrote it down.]
    - What? Where?
    - [I carved it with a bottle cap in the wall.]
    - Which wall? Which wall?!
    - [The one on the right, about shoulder height when you're sitting down.]
    - ····· Two, three, three, one, seven?
    - [If you say so.]
    - But is it 23-31-7 or 23-3-17 or 2-33-17?
    - [I can't remember.]
    - Griffin.
    - [I can't remember. You'll have to try them all. And you'll have to be very quiet about it.]
    - Yeah. Okay. Thanks.
    ································································
    - Hello? What? You gonna say something? Do you even know who you are?
    - [What the shit kind of question is that? Do you even know who you are?]
    - I'm Finney Blake.
    - [Yeah, well, nice to fucking meet you, Finney Blake. Right here. This is it.]
    - This is what?
    - [The horrifying nightmare end of your pathetic little life.]
    - Holy shit. You're Vance Hopper. I remember you. You used to scare me.
    - [Trust me, Finney Blake, if you knew what you had coming, you'd be fucking terrified. Today's the day, motherfucker. Have you tried stacking the carpets to reach the window?]
    - I've tried everything.
    - [No, not everything. When The Grabber saw what I had done, that was it. And he took his time with me, too. Oh, that fucker had to spend a fortune to repair all the damages.]
    - What did you do?
    - [I'm getting to that, cunt wad! Or do you have some other important shit you have to do right now?]
    - No, no, no, no, I'm listening.
    - [There's an outlet in the shitter, across from the toilet. On the other side of that wall, there's a storage room. You can't get into that room, because there's a big ass upright freezer in the way. Break into the wall about two feet above the outlet till you get to a panel with screws in it. Get the panel off, you're into the freezer.]
    - And then out into the storage room. Thank you.
    - [For what?]
    - For helping me.
    - [Helping you? This isn't about you.]
    ································································
    - What? Hello ?
    - [Hey, Finn.What's happening?]
    - Robin?
    - [Hey, buddy. Don't cry.]
    - I'm not.
    - [Yes, you are. I can see you.]
    - You can?
    - [I'm with you. I've been with you this whole time. A man never leaves a friend behind. ····· You ain't gonna go like I did.]
    - I've tried everything. Nothing's worked.
    - [Yet. Do you remember what I told you?]
    - That someday I have to stand up for myself.
    - ["Someday" is today, Finn. Today's the day you stop taking shit from anybody.]
    - I'm not a fighter like you, Robin. You couldn't even take him.
    - [You've always been a fighter, Finn. That's what we have in common, why we were friends. You were always afraid to throw a punch, but you always knew how to take one. And you always got back up every time.]
    - I'm not strong enough.
    - [You have to be. You're getting out of here. If you can't do it for you, do it for me.]
    - What does it matter?
    - [Because I don't want to die for nothing. I want to at least have died for a friend. And because I can't kill that son of a bitch, you have to do it for me.]
    - How?
    - [You're gonna use a weapon. The one in your hand.]
    - The phone?
    - [Fill the receiver with dirt. Pack it in tight. Give it some heft. You raise the phone. Take a fast step back. Step forward, step back and swing. ····· This was the last call, Finn. It's all you from here on out. Use what we gave you].
    - I will.
    - [Bye, Finn.]

"The study of law is something new and unfamiliar to most of you. Unlike any schooling you've ever been through before. We use the
socratic method here. I call on you, ask you a question. And you answer it. Why don't I just give you a lecture? Because through my questions, you learn to teach yourselves. Through this method of questioning, answering. We seek to develop in you the ability to analyze. That vast complex of facts that constitute. The relationships of members within a given society. Questioning and answering. At times you may feel that you have found the correct answer. I assure you that this is a total delusion on your part. You will never find the correct, absolute, and final answer. In my classroom, there is always another question. Another question to follow your answer. Yes, you're on a treadmill. My little questions spin the tumblers of your mind. You teach yourselves the law. But I train your mind. You come in here with a skull full of mush. And you leave thinking like a lawyer"

    - I never said anything. I just went upstairs, I got your things. I put on my coat, and I came right down.

    - Then why did he look at me that way in class? He questioned the student on my left. On my right, in front of me. Behind me, and then, glaring at me. Asked somebody else the question.

    - I don't know, but believe me. You're just a name on a piece of paper. A picture on a seating chart, and that's all. You're only one out of thousands. Over the past 40 years.

    - I don't believe that. He knows who I am. Susan! We can't go on like this.

    - Like what?

    - Look, I've gotta get organized. What is it? The middle of February. And I've got 4 months till exams. I never know when or if I'm gonna see you.

    - What kind of organization did you have in mind?

    - When's your divorce final?

    - Oh, no more contracts, Mr. Hart. Thank you, no. Are you really serious?

    - Well, if not the honorable thing. Why not the dishonorable?

    - I'd prefer to live alone.

    - I don't know what you want. I don't know what to do with you.

    - Well, I don't want to live in the married students' dorm. And have neat friends down the hall and walk babies with them. I've been organized like that before. You law students, you're all the same. You can't let things alone. You have to organize. The endless defining of irrational human behavior. Into tight little patterns. People are not rational. People are irrational.····· Why the hell can't you just do things? Why do you have to talk about everything?

    - I am trying to do something. I am trying to make sense. I want us to be together.

    - Why?

    - What's wrong with that?

    - I was right. You were born for the married students' dorm. You were born for the dating bar.

    - I can't live like this. I need to be organized. Susan, I need a way of living that I can rationalize. This way I spend half my time worrying. I can't work and I can't sleep.

    - I didn't come here because you bought me flowers. I can always buy flowers. Hart, I could buy you. Maybe I already have.

    - Eat shit.

    - I like you. I really do.

    - You can't buy me.

    - Show me something in langdell I can't buy. Show me one person who doesn't kiss my father's ass.

    - I don't kiss your father's ass. I'm not afraid of him anymore. I can really understand what he is saying. I've read everything he's written. My mind is really in his. I know what he is saying before he says it. I am three questions ahead. I am having a true socratic experience.

    - Three questions ahead, hart? You're only three answers ahead.·····

    - ····· I haven't had a decent meal in four days. I haven't had any sleep. Look, he tested me. I failed. I worked so hard
on that goddamn paper. Well, he may flunk me!

    - They finally got you, didn't they, hart? They sucked all that midwestern charm. Right out of you. Look it, he's got you scared to death. Oh, you're gonna pass. Because you're the kind the law school wants. You'll get your little diploma. Your piece of paper. And you can stick it in your silver box. With all the other paper in your life. Your birth certificate, your driver's license. Your marriage license, your stock certificates. And your will. I wish you would flunk. There might be some hope for you.

    - ····· I sit in his class. For days, I read his books in the library. I abstract the cases he's chosen. I know everything about him. You can say he doesn't care. But he's there anyway. Pounding his mind into mine. He screws around with my life.

    - There's no way you're ever gonna have. A normal relationship with him. He won't permit it. It's not part of the structure. You must accept it and just try and do things on your own. You've gotta stand up. You've gotta grow. I can't explain it, but you've just gotta stop being so soft. So easily manipulated. It's very dangerous for one's intelligence. I'm tired of hearing about my father. And I'm tired of talking about him.

    - There is no Oleg here. Yes, and never was. You know it perfectly well. It has always been me. All the time. You were alone. That's why I came around. I've always been by your side. I protected you. We got along so well, What's wrong now? I see. You have found a true friend. And you forgot about me. But I never went away. I always lived inside your head. Now, that Oleg is gone, I am back. Look at what we did together.

    - You killed all those people.

    - We killed them together. What's wrong about it? You wanted to make the city a better place.

    - But I'm not a murderer!

    - You hated the kids who bullied you in the orphanage, the bad guys who wanted to grab your business, rich dudes who poison our city! I remember everyone who made you suffer. God is my witness, I was patient for far too long. Time has come.

    - You're my creation. So if I try you will disappear. Go away.

    - That was a nice try. I'm not just some imaginary friend. You see. I helped you kill the people before. But this time you did it yourself. That means something. We're becoming one.

    - Do not dare! You won't spoil my plan. You will like it. You will see it with your own eyes.
