Hi guys how about we start our own gaming server? I mean not something like one guy hosting a game on his computer with his 128k uplink dynamic ADSL connection and few other players connect through Hamachi.

I am talking about a dedicated gaming server with multiple games and maps.
eg..
Counter Strike Source
Unreal tournament
Warcraft
Halo
Quake etc..

And around 200 people can connect and play at the same time with good FPS
and make SL records show them in site. Play with international players, get in to world ranks etc..

So thinking about a server like this

Dual Opteron 242 (Equivalent to Dual Xeon 2.8ghz)
2048 MB RAM
100 MBit Connect
1TB Bandwith per month
2x120 Gigabyte IDE hard drives

But there are some problems for this project.

1. If we start such gaming server all the active members will play games and no one will be in ElaKiri forum?

2. This server costs lot of money, even if we put good percentage of the cost still there are about US$100 per month to be earned to cover the server cost. How to earn that?

3. How many of you like to play online and have time for make teams and go for ranks?

problems...

1 - That wont happen.. All of them are not playing games ne.. Even my self wont play games much now.. So dont worry GT.. Forum will be active..

2- Ad's wont bother members unless they are pop ups.. So you can put some decent ads on the site.. Maybe they'll related to new music albums, games, pc parts, even cars....

3- In GG and Hamachi there are plenty of Sri Lankan gamers online. Even EK members... So that wont be a prob...

But ElaKiri and Its all new Friends network gonna run on a very much powerful server than this dual Opteron. Friends network expected to consume lot of processing power and ram with huge amounts of bandwidth once we launch it.
I am expecting lot of user activity in friends network. Other than that lot of new projects coming with Beta 3 got to have more power for those projects too.
So even advertising on friends network and slight ads on ElaKiri forum will earn money for those servers. But i am not sure it will enough for the gaming server.

Anyway you can't buy even a normal Single Processor Pentium 4 server with ram and bandwidth for $100 per month. So why we are talking about $100 when we are dealing with a Dual Processor AMD Opteron 2GB Gaming server.
Thats coz big percentage of the server cost filled by our side.

Anyway about the idea for putting ads in gaming portal. Well after you sign up once you just directly connect to the gaming server from your game. No visit to the portal, you can view stats from the game too. So i am not sure we can earn $100 per month from a portal.
I am thinking about some srilankan sponsor about this gaming server project. Like hardware authorize dealers in sri lanka Intel, AMD, HP, Pc House, Internet service providers like Dialog etc..
Anyway not sure that they will sponsor with so much money every month.
