Facebook hired a leading public relations firm to plant negative stories about Google in the press, it emerged today, as growing animosity between two of the world’s leading internet companies exploded into the public domain.
The social networking site has admitted to hiring Burson-Marsteller, a top global PR firm, to urge newspapers and other media to investigate Google’s privacy policies and to run critical stories about the search giant.
The details of the smear campaign came to light after a blogger approached by Burson published an e-mail exchange showing how it had touted stories on behalf of an unnamed client about a Google service called Social Circle.
The PR company said that it could help the blogger to write opinion pieces criticising Google’s service, and then help to place the stories in leading American news outlets such as The Washington Post and thePolitico and Huffington Post websites.
The blogger in question, Chris Soghoian, did not want to pursue the story, describing it as “making a mountain out of a molehill”, before publishing the emails online.
This led to rumours spreading in Silicon Valley circles in the past few days about which group was behind hiring Burson, with some pointing the finger towards Google’s more established rivals such as Apple and Microsoft
Today, the popular Daily Beast blog revealed that: “confronted with evidence, a Facebook spokesman last night confirmed that Facebook hired Burson, citing two reasons: First, because it believes Google is doing some things in social networking that raise privacy concerns; second, and perhaps more important, because Facebook resents Google’s attempts to use Facebook data in its own social-networking service.”
Burson has admitted to its involvement, releasing a statement saying that “this was not at all standard operating procedure and is against our policies, and the assignment on those terms should have been declined”. Google and Facebook have declined to comment further.
The skirmish indicates a bitter new twist in the growing rivalry between the two companies. Though Facebook is the dominant social networking site, with more than 500 million users worldwide, it sees Google as a major threat to its future.
Google is expected to launch a number of social networking products soon. Larry Page, its chief executive, has made pay rises at the company this year dependant on the success of its new “social strategy”.
In particular, Facebook appears to have taken objection to Google’s Social Circle. The service allows people signed up to Gmail, Google’s messaging service, to see information about their friends, but also friends of their friends — something Google describes as “secondary connections.”
