I saw recently people selling Chinese unbranded android head units by white labeling with reputed brands like Lenovo. This is illegal. Lenovo does not produce android head units. Prices are an outrage. You will see they're advertising on ikman and Facebook. Poor Sri Lankans buy those cheap devices from scammers. Don't buy cheap head units they do not sound better and do not last long with the android update because of the specs.

The best thing is to buy branded one from a reputed company that supports apple car play or android auto. Most of them are not android OS. If you want to watch videos from the head unit best thing to do is buy the cheapest option in the market. 1 or 2 years back able to ship good players from overseas from daraz or aliexpress. But that option is not feasible anymore. Look at the real price from the below link.

Well the thing is I need to run some android apps on the HU itself, independent of a smartphone so brands like Pioneer or Kenwood which use their own proprietary software isn't gonna do

Prices on Aliexpress seem somewhat closer to what it costs in SL though - a 2G 32G "Podofo" unit with the reverse camera costs $141 w/o shipping - that's 30k right there, shipping costs $70 - bringing up the total cost to about 44k

Yes as I said this option is not feasible any more due increase in shipping costs nowadays. Try to spend around 20k to 25k don't spend more than that for generic head units.

I was kinda hoping to go for something like this:

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001665446476.html

Seller agreed to ship the item via EMS, which costs just $20 or thereabouts.

Since the $ crisis seem to be getting worse it felt prudent to go for a unit with high specs - a quad-core, 4GB 64GB model along with a camera and a matching facia costs about $300 - $320 with shipping

Besides, changing the HU isn't exactly an easy task - you have to get a number of plastic panels off the dashboard (and rocker panels too if you're installing a rear camera)

So don't you think going for something high-spec and using it for at least 4-5 years sound more sensible?

Android apps push their boundaries each year. Having at least 4GB is a must to run the system without lagging. If everything goes well good for you when you use 4-5 years. Some people DIY head units. But I always recommend having professionals do that. It's totally up to you. I want to inform you all about the sacamm.

Yeah I too am planning to get one down and install it myself.

Will post an update on how it goes. It'll be months before that happens though, I'm still browsing through HUs offered on Ali and eBay

I do have this one that was installed by the previous owner. Sound very disappointing. Maybe they tune for "Kottu music" in Sri Lanka. I am looking forward to buying a new one after this thing dies. People who imported this need to shame themself.
