Not always... Just check what these on-line guys offer you and the airline directly offers you. Last June I had to book tickets from CDG (France) to Zagreb (Croatia) Usually my wife does all these and she gave me a list of fares from all the European booking engines. I booked directly from Air France, cheaper, zero credit card fees and no add-on fees like admin fees whatsoever. Moreover I could make changes on-line with the airline directly.
Booking engines prices seem to be initially low, but they go on adding each step and sometimes you will find that the airline is cheaper.
Not only that, just before Covid I had two SQ bookings CMB-SIN-LHR return and CMB- SIN- WLG return booked directly with SQ. No agents. They refunded in FULL within a couple of months. No questions asked. Those booked from booking engines either didn't get the money or got about 80% -90% refund years later.
Also if you need to make any changes try calling these booking engine guys. You will have fun. The airlines sometimes doesn't entertain you unless you book directly with them.
Also before Covid, I had booked Icelandic Air directly from them LHR- KEF (Reykjavik) - LHR return. They did not refund but gave me a voucher valid for three years (further extendable due to Covid uncertanity). Last June they allocated same flights without any additional payments. Sometimes it's worth to pay the extra buck and stay with the airline. Very easy to deal with them because you are their customer.
