Flight route case - Australia to USA

When you want to goto USA from Aus or NZ you have consume 35 to 58 hours because it takes long route towards North west rather going towards directly North East?
Why flights are not taking short distance via North East from Aus or NZ ? Mosts flights from there use Hong Kong transit with North West route??

Because it's big. Whether the earth is flat or round won't change the distance between the two. But one of the things that makes the flight longer than it could be is that planes have to be able to land within a certain time during the entire flight, in case something goes wrong and an engine fails. It's called an ETOPS rating, and some planes may have say a 2-hour limit. This means planes may not be able to fly direct, say straight over the Pacific. Interestingly, the LA-Sydney route can go pretty straight. I'm guessing there are just enough tiny Pacific islands with runways so that this is possible."

Forget about ETOPS .. Airlines basically try to follow great circle tracks (shortest distance between two points). For example shortest distance between Hong Kong and New York (JFK) is approximately 8,072 Miles that lies closer to North Pole. That route follows pretty much Northerly heading and well away from Pacific Ocean.. But of course with operation requirements route may alter as required .

Also bear in mind that ETOPS (Extended Range Twin Engine Operational Performance Standards) only applicable for twin engine aircrafts.

මම ගිය මාසෙ ඔසී ගියා. Cathy pacific එකෙන් ගියෙ.Transit HK තිබ්බෙ.විසා ගත්තෙ Aus වලට විතරයි.

they allowed you to transit because you went on cathey (flag carrier of hong kong ) and you have a visa to aussie. same case with those have visa to countries like usa , canada , korea , new zealand , japan and uk. you will still need a transit visa if you dont fullfill this requirement.
