'We don't lose, we learn' - Pogba backs Man Utd to bounce back from City loss

    paul-pogba-manchester-united-southampton_1xp27x87lmvk1dl1s223cusa7.jpg

Paul Pogba may have stayed silent in the wake of Manchester United's 2-1 defeat to Manchester City on Saturday, but the midfielder responded with a philosophical thought the following day.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Kelechi Iheanacho gave Pep Guardiola's men the lead at Old Trafford, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic pulled one back for United before half time.Jose Mourinho's side failed to build on that strike, however, as City took the three points and moved ahead of their rivals in the league.

Pogba had nothing to say immediately after the game, but he spoke out on Sunday via Instagram, insisting that United will bounce back.

"The season is just starting, we don't lose, we learn," he said. "United we stand."
Saturday's defeat was the Red Devils' first in the league this season, having won their previous three. They are back in action on Thursday, taking on Feyenoord in the Europa League.

AC Milan 0-1 Udinese: Perica strikes late after worring Antonelli injury

    montella-milan-serie-a_1j14alddzzk5h148k5rl59ea5n.png

A serious-looking injury to Luca Antonelli marred a difficult game for AC Milan as they were beaten 1-0 by Udinese on Sunday.

Stipe Perica struck in the 88th minute to snatch all three points for the visitors and end a run of nine away games against Milan without a win.

Vincenzo Montella's side were looking to bounce back from a 4-2 loss to Napoli last month, but were unable to test Orestis Karnezis in the Udinese goal sufficiently despite dominating possession at a stifling San Siro.

A disappointing result was marred by a worrying moment involving Antonelli, who was carried off following lengthy treatment on the pitch after he took a hit at a corner.Jose Sosa came closest for Milan, striking the crossbar from 18 yards, but they struggled to fashion service for Carlos Bacca against a disciplined visiting defence.

Milan pushed to the end, but were hit with a sucker-punch on the break when Perica turned in a cross from Emmanuel Badu - who was a little fortunate to be on the pitch - meaning Udinese leapfrog Montella's side in the Serie A table and sit on six points from three games.

Neither of these teams has looked solid defensively in the opening weeks of the season, but goalscoring chances were few and far between in an even opening half-hour.

Gianluigi Donnarumma got down well to deny Cyril Thereau after a promising Udinese counter, before the officials sanctioned a water break due to the sweltering conditions inside San Siro.

Sosa left the crossbar shaking with a fine volley from the edge of the area, but Udinese held firm against mounting Milan pressure as the first half wore on.

Milan were keen to keep up their attack after half-time, but understandably lost some momentum when Antonelli, following several minutes of treatment, was carried off on a stretcher wearing a neck brace after an accidental collision at a corner.

Badu was perhaps fortunate to escape with just a yellow card after catching Sosa with a raised arm, and the home fans made their growing frustrations clear when Emil Hallfredsson almost snatched the lead for Udinese, flashing a shot wide of Donnarumma's left-hand post from close range.

Giacomo Bonaventura finally brought a save from Karnezis on 67 minutes - though it was a simple enough stop from a header - before Bacca hit the side-netting with his first half-chance of the match after linking up well with Suso.

Milan kept up the pressure but their attacking endeavour began to wilt in the heat in the closing stages, and San Siro was stunned when Badu's floated cross from the right was steered into the bottom corner by Perica via a heavy deflection off Ignazio Abate, allowing Udinese to claim the win.

Best is yet to come from Juve - Pjanic

    miralempjanic-cropped_19ld950b60xgw1bs7pcimjzyzw.jpg

Miralem Pjanic was happy with his goalscoring Juventus debut but said his new side could have been more comfortable in their 3-1 win over Sassuolo.

The Bosnian midfielder scored the Serie A champions' third goal of a blistering opening half hour, slamming the ball into the net after his looping header rebounded off the crossbar.Sassuolo pulled one back shortly afterwards, but Juventus dominated thereafter and claimed their third victory of the season, maintaining their 100 per cent record."We won, that is the most important thing, as we are happy with the three points, but we can do even better," Pjanic told JTV.

"We prepared well for the game against Sassuolo, who are a really good team, but we could've been more determined in front of goal and scored a couple more."We have so many strikers and excellent players in the squad and we play to achieve great objectives. We can do that all together."

Juve coach Massimiliano Allegri played Pjanic as one of a central midfield three, along with Sami Khedira and Mario Lemina, but the 26-year-old is happy to play anywhere for his new club.

Pjanic and his team-mates will turn their attentions to the Champions League on Wednesday, when Sevilla are their Group H opponents, and the former Roma player is confident Juventus will make a winning start to their European campaign.

"I can play from the middle or wing, wherever the coach asks me," he said. "The understanding with my team-mates is great."On Wednesday we start the Champions League and we want to start in the best way - with a win."

Gignac 'haunted' by Euro 2016 final miss

    andre-pierre-gignac-cropped_7n1fuc8bz3j71b5rrv99jhkx9.jpg

France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac says he is haunted by his miss during the Euro 2016 final defeat to Portugal in July.

With the game goalless in second-half stoppage time, Gignac turned a low shot past goalkeeper Rui Patricio, only to see the ball come back off the base of the post.Portugal went on to snatch victory against the host nation in extra time, with Eder rifling home from distance to seal his country's first major trophy.

And Gignac concedes that it is difficult not to think about what might have been had his shot crept in off the woodwork."The first week afterwards was very tough. It will haunt me for the rest of my career," the Tigres forward told Telefoot.

"I thought of the joy of my team-mates, had I scored that goal in the 92nd minute. It was very difficult. Footballers or former players can understand it."

Dybala: Juventus on par with Europe's best

Paulo Dybala believes Juventus are on a par with Europe's finest as they chase Champions League glory. The Serie A champions crashed out in the round of 16 last term as Bayern Munich proved to be too strong, having made the final the season before. They meet Sevilla in their Group H opener on Wednesday and Dybala is optimistic about his side's chances.

"I cannot wait to play in the Champions League. I think we are on par with Europe's best," Dybala told Sky Sport Italia."We have had a great journey and came close to eliminating Bayern last year. We have brought in some great players since, so I think we can go far with the right attitude.

"Last year defeat to Sevilla cost us top spot in the group. We have to forget that and remember that we beat them in Turin."We have some great attackers and can cause them a lot of problems."

Mihajlovic: Hart could have done better

    joehart-cropped_1pa6opxkhiw6z1s0fe2sm7dghv.jpg

Sinisa Mihajlovic was quick to defend Joe Hart but admitted the England goalkeeper "could have done better" with Atalanta's equaliser as Torino slumped to a 2-1 defeat in Bergamo.Debutant Hart flapped at a corner with his side leading 1-0, allowing the hosts to equalise and then go on to win 2-1.

Mihajlovic, however, claims he does not see anger as a solution to such problems, particularly when his players have otherwise followed his gameplan."[Hart] made a good save on the corner, but he could have done better," he told the media after the defeat.

"With my players, though, I do not get angry for a mistake, but when the boys do not do what we prepare in the week."There were individual errors, and, of course, the fewer you make, the more chance you can win."Mihajlovic believes those mistakes can be ironed out, with Lorenzo De Silvestri also culpable as he conceded a decisive penalty.

"They are individual errors we have paid for, not team errors," he told Sky Italia. "All the goals that we have conceded are derived from this."It is easier, in my opinion, to fix these kind of flaws compared to fixing the team, having also changed the game system. We need more concentration."

Swansea 2-2 Chelsea: Costa double earns Blues away point

    diego-costa-chelsea_toahrd3d8gzf1r1i09m7ovb5c.jpg

Two-goal Diego Costa was the centre of attention once again as Chelsea came from behind to draw 2-2 against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium. The Spain striker gave the Blues the lead in the first half with a cool, side-footed shot and his second goal was a spectacular overhead kick.

Swansea had turned the game on its head inside three second-half minutes when Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois brought Gylfi Sigurdsson down inside the penalty area and the Iceland midfielder converted the spot-kick himself, before Leroy Fer robbed Gary Cahill of possession and put Francesco Guidolin's side into the lead.

But Costa, whose afternoon was characterised by his trademark theatrics, heavy challenges and disputes with opponents, made sure the Londoners claimed a point. Whether he should have been on the pitch is another matter after a lame dive when challenged by Lukasz Fabianski having already been cautioned.

The result ended Chelsea's 100 per cent start to the season and denied them the opportunity to join Manchester City at the top of the table, while Swansea ended a run of two consecutive league defeats.

Antonio Conte opted not to start new signing David Luiz in his back four as Chelsea named an unchanged line-up for the first time since February, while Guidolin lined up with a three-man defence and Fernando Llorente as a lone striker.

Five minutes into the game, Willian rattled a shot at goal after being teed up neatly by N'Golo Kante and Fabianski was rocked by the power of the shot as he saved it with his fists.

Fabianski preserved parity for Swansea again after 10 minutes, stretching to prevent Willian's dangerous whipped cross from the right from reaching the onrushing Costa.

Swansea were enjoying the majority of the early possession but their gameplan was disrupted when Federico Fernandez's header dropped at the feet of Oscar and he squared the ball to Costa who side-footed it into the bottom corner.

Chelsea surged forward again and the in-form Eden Hazard split the Swansea defence with a run that put him clean through on goal, but Fabianski did well to save his low drive.

The home side's best chance came when Llorente laid the ball off for Sigurdsson, who bent a shot narrowly wide of Thibaut Courtois' goal, and Costa should have made it 2-0 when he failed to turn John Terry's cross into an open net from close range.

Willian flashed a shot just wide of the post early in the second half and Chelsea seemed set to dominate proceedings as Costa and Hazard led a series of fast attacks, but a mistake by Courtois allowed Swansea back into the match.

Sigurdsson powered his way into the box and the Belgium goalkeeper attempted a slide tackle but clumsily brought the midfielder down. Sigurdsson slammed the penalty down the middle, giving Courtois no chance to redeem himself.Three minutes later, referee Andre Marriner adjudged Fer to have robbed Cahill cleanly and he stabbed the ball past Courtois and into the net.

With Swansea heading for a memorable victory, Chelsea laid siege to Fabianski's goal and, after Branislav Ivanovic's shot was blocked, Costa's acrobatic finish levelled the match.

Costa almost wrapped up a man-of-the-match performance with a hat-trick when he was put through by Hazard but Fabianski was equal to his shot and the points were shared.

Roma 3-2 Sampdoria: Totti scores last-gasp winner after weather delay

    francesco-totti_opmmyeefwj6186lryvg3z6hx.jpg

Francesco Totti converted a penalty to earn a dramatic 3-2 win for Roma at home against Sampdoria on Sunday as he matched Paolo Maldini's record of playing in 25 Serie A seasons.

After extreme weather conditions in Rome temporarily made the pitch unplayable, the start of the second half was delayed for over an hour.Sampdoria led 2-1 at the break after Luis Muriel and Fabio Quagliarella struck following an early opener scored by Mohamed Salah.

Roma coach Luciano Spalletti introduced Totti for his first appearance of the season at half-time as part of a double change and the veteran once again made a decisive impact for his side.First, Totti set up fellow half-time substitute Edin Dzeko to level the scores, before Roma were awarded a penalty in the second minute of stoppage time.

The 39-year-old made no mistake and his first goal of the campaign means the former Italy international has now scored in 23 successive Serie A seasons as he continues to break more records.

Ronaldo: Real Madrid will win La Liga this season

    bale-cristiano-ronaldo-cropped_kxzz5a7tl8lu13i2f83wrpylk.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has little doubt Real Madrid will prove to be too strong for Barcelona and Atletico Madrid in the race for the Liga title this season.

Madrid last won the domestic crown in 2011-12 and have had to play second fiddle behind their rivals since.Nevertheless, they have made a fine start to the 2016-17 campaign and have already taken a lead over both Barca and Atletico, much to Ronaldo's delight."I want to win all possible trophies and would love to win La Liga," the attacker told reporters.

"It is a title that we will be going after and the team is looking good and solid. We've started well and I hope we can continue to do well."It is a long competition, but I am convinced we will win it this year."

Recent reports suggested Ronaldo is set to sign a contract renewal with Madrid and the 31-year-old hopes to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu for the rest of his career."At the moment I can't imagine anything other than seeing out my career at Real Madrid," he added.

"It is the biggest club in the world and the best players are here. What I really want is to keeping moving forward and to end my career here."

Totti: I was afraid I would miss penalty

Francesco Totti feared he would miss the last-gasp penalty that saw Roma beat Sampdoria 3-2 on Sunday.

The veteran attacker, 39, stepped up to take the spot-kick well into stoppage time with the score at 2-2, but he made no mistake to deliver Roma the full three points."It was the first time I've been afraid of missing," Totti told Sky Italia.

"But I couldn’t miss in front of the Curva, in front of my people."Crowning the match with a goal and an assist was the perfect ending."I feel relaxed. My mindset is just right, I'm happy, taking it day by day. Why stop when I feel like that? If my body holds up, my mind can help me do anything.

"We couldn't get into the game at the start, but a match lasts for 90 minutes."The team wants to achieve big things."Extreme weather conditions in Rome temporarily made the pitch unplayable and the start of the second half was delayed for over an hour before Roma recorded their hard-fought win.

Conte: Costa 'took a lot of kicks' against Swansea

    hd-diego-costa-chelsea_vklmcskud1zc1bgvm0kl344ir.jpg

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte bemoaned the rough treatment he felt was dished out to Diego Costa in his side's 2-2 draw at Swansea City.

The Spain international scored twice and was booked in an all-action display, but his manager was left unhappy as referee Andre Marriner failed to punish the Swans defence for their perceived rugged handling of the forward.

Costa was fouled seven times throughout the game, a joint high for a player in a single Premier League match this season, while he himself committed only one misdemeanour."I can tell you that Diego Costa, from the first minute to 94 minutes, he took a lot of kicks," Conte told Sky Sports.

"It's incredible the defender didn't finish [with a red card] before the [end of the] match."However, the Italian was pleased with how Costa responded as he netted his third and fourth goals of the season, the latter a spectacular 81st minute bicycle kick. "Every game the press ask me about the passion of Diego Costa," he added. "Today he was fantastic at controlling that. He took a lot of kicks."I think the defenders know him, and sometimes try to provoke him. They know Diego is a player with real passion."

Arsenal are too big for Howe, says Parlour

    eddie-howe-hd_coon1e7k0qoa19qq8hnlxqldm.jpg

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour feels current Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is not ready to replace Arsene Wenger as the man in charge at the Emirates just yet.

Wenger is expected to step down as Arsenal manager once his contract expires at the end of the 2016-17 campaign and Howe has been mooted as one of the candidates to take the Frenchman's place following his fine work at Bournemouth. However, Parlour believes the 38-year-old still needs a few years before he is ready for a club of Arsenal's stature.

"He has certainly done a great job [at Bournemouth], but I just think it maybe a little bit too big for him at this time of his career," Parlour told Sky Sports.

"I think he has to go to the next level after Bournemouth, maybe like an Everton, or someone like that who is going to be challenging for the top six and then maybe move to the top-four level.

"But Eddie has done nothing wrong and he is learning the game still and about players and systems and the way to play."

Balotelli: Joining Liverpool the worst decision of my life

    mario-balotelli-ligue-1-nice-v-marseille-110916_7f60fdlkl9bp1cunjbjawv1od.jpg

Mario Balotelli feels joining Liverpool was the worst decision he has ever made and has taken aim at Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp in the process.

The striker left AC Milan in favour of a move to Anfield in 2014, but failed to make an impact at Anfield. Balotelli spent last season on loan back at Milan before exiting the club for Nice on deadline day and says he is delighted to have left the Premier League side.

"Joining Liverpool was the worst decision of my life. Apart from the fantastic fans and some player with whom I have an excellent relationship, I did not like the club," Balotelli told Canal+."I had two coaches at Liverpool, Rodgers and Klopp for a bit, I did not like their methods and their personality. I never really felt well there.

"I am nothing like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] for example. You could confront Zlatan with lions and he would still be calm. If you surround him with good people, he will still be calm. That's the way he is."But I need to be more relaxed and have surroundings that work for me."

Balotelli, 26, started his Nice career by scoring twice in Sunday's Ligue 1 encounter with Marseille and he remains full of ambition for the near future. "It is not too late for me to win the Ballon d'Or," he added."I think I could have already won it by now, but I might be able to win it within two to three years by working hard and staying serious.

"Over the past two years, my work ethic has increased from 10 per cent to 80 per cent. I have really started working hard over the past two years."

Pescara 1-2 Inter: Icardi leaves it late for stunning comeback

    pescara-inter_vwro56ufth6y1p4j3h0k4kw1v.jpg

Frank de Boer secured a first competitive victory as Inter boss at the third time of asking, with captain Mauro Icardi firing a late brace in a 2-1 win over Pescara in Serie A.

The Dutchman lost his opening game in charge to Chievo before fighting back to earn a point against Palermo, and Jean-Christophe Bahebeck's fine volley threatened to hand Inter another setback on Sunday.

But Icardi headed an equaliser to save De Boer's blushes and then ended the side's run of four away league defeats with victory as the striker grabbed his second in stoppage time.Pescara have enjoyed an action-packed return to Serie A, drawing with Napoli and then being awarded a win at Sassuolo as their hosts fielded an ineligible player.

But this was a dreary affair by comparison, although the hosts had enough opportunities to win it and struck the crossbar through Valerio Verre.Inter had to wait until the 12th minute for their first opening, when Icardi got on the end of Ivan Perisic's centre to prod straight at Albano Bizzarri.

That chance represented the height of the visitors' ambitions in the first 30 minutes, though, and Pescara twice could have led due to defensive errors.

However, Miranda raced back to recover the ball when Ahmad Benali ran clear, before Bryan Cristante somehow volleyed wide when picked out at the back post by Verre.

That scare belatedly stirred Inter into action and Bizzarri had to be down smartly to repel Ever Banega's low thump and the subsequent rebound from Antonio Candreva.

The hosts then created an even better opportunity. A wonderful piece of skill from Gianluca Caprari saw him tear away down the right and seemingly tee up the opener for Verre, only for the 22-year-old to smash against the crossbar.Icardi nodded wide either side of half-time, while Samir Handanovic made stops from Verre and Ledian Memushaj.

With the game now wide open, debutant Joao Mario dummied for Banega to shoot, with Bizzarri blocking, and Danilo D'Ambrosio galloped forward to lash a strike over the bar.

But the breakthrough came at the other end after 63 minutes. Pescara attacked in numbers, with Francesco Zampano delaying long enough for Bahebeck to ghost into the box on the far side. He was brilliantly found and applied a smart finish back across Handanovic on the volley.

Verre and Bahebeck both failed to double their side's advantage as Handanovic saved, and were made to pay as Icardi changed the complexion of the game. Having repeatedly directed headers high and wide, he rose magnificently onto Banega's cross to nod into the corner 13 minutes from time.

And, in the 91st minute, Icardi added a second, battling through Pescara's backline and appearing to touch the ball with his forearm before rifling into the corner to end De Boer's poor start.

Moyes: Everton were close to winning Premier League title

    hd-david-moyes-sunderland-middlesbrough_1bz2ernzj78us1byl6de0u9bvj.jpg

David Moyes believes his Everton side were close to being good enough to win the Premier League before he left for Manchester United.

The Scot is set to come up against the Toffees on Monday in his new role as Sunderland manager, with the Black Cats still looking for their first victory of the season.

And Moyes believes the side that he managed for 11 years were a high-quality striker away from challenging for silverware.

“We had a great team at Everton but were missing a centre forward,” he told reporters.“I might be exaggerating but I think with that, we would have been close to winning the Premier League. We were that good.

"But we couldn’t get the finances to buy a striker in the last couple of years of my time there.“I have to be fair to Bill Kenwright who was always trying to give me it and every penny he had, he gave me. I don’t have any complaints.”Moyes also sees a lot of similarities between Sunderland and the Goodison Park outfit, though he feels it will take time for his current club to reach a similar level.

I see Everton as a very similar club to Sunderland. We are not going to be the biggest spenders, just like Everton weren’t and it’s going to take time – at least three or four transfer windows.

“But even if we had a big pot of cash in the last window, it would have been difficult to do it overnight because of where we are as a club right now.”

Wilshere out to 'prove everyone wrong' at Bournemouth

    wilshere-bournemouth_i88u4m6i7abb1v8qj1y3a4d63.jpg

Jack Wilshere is determined to silence his doubters and get his career back on track at Bournemouth after stalling at Arsenal.

Wilshere joined Bournemouth on a season-long loan deal on deadline day after being told by Arsene Wenger he would struggle to get regular first-team action at the Emirates following his injury problems.

The midfielder made his competitive debut off the bench in the 1-0 win over West Brom on Saturday and he is keen to prove his star quality in the remainder of 2016-17.

"If there's any question mark over me I know it's my fitness. So hopefully I can play as many games as possible, prove everyone wrong and re-kick my career," Wilshere told the club's official website.

"The biggest aim for me, and I am sure everyone is aware of it, is to get as many games as possible. That was the idea coming here."It was also good to come on for my first minutes and get used to the way that the boys play. It's similar to the way I am used to playing at Arsenal. I can fit into this team, I think.

"I came on in the number 10 position and then moved to the right for the team. I can do that role and I can also play deeper. I am comfortable in all of those positions. Different games bring different problems, so we will see."

Guardiola: Man City not good enough to win titles yet

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola does not think his side are yet at a level where they can win silverware despite a perfect start to life at the Etihad Stadium.

City impressed on the way to a 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday and will attempt to extend their 100 per cent record under Guardiola when the Borussia Monchengladbach visit on Tuesday evening.United came on strong after an error from goalkeeper Claudio Bravo allowed Zlatan Ibrahimovic to get a goal back on the stroke of half-time.

And Guardiola reminded his in-form players there is still plenty of room for improvement, particularly when it comes to taking on elite opposition, at home and abroad."We made good things and bad things [at the derby] but it's just three points. Of course we're happy but we have to improve," he told a pre-match news conference.

"We have to improve a lot of things. We are first in the Premier League but the way we have played so far will not be enough to win the Premier League."The way we have played in these six games is not good enough to win the Champions League."

Guardiola will welcome Sergio Aguero back from a domestic suspension, with captain Vincent Kompany and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan continuing to build up their fitness, but much focus is likely to fall upon Bravo on his home debut following an erratic initial showing in City colours."Bravo is so strong," said the ex-Barcelona boss, echoing his post-match backing for the Chile international from the weekend.

"I saw the action of the goal - three or four times after he played with personality. That's what I tried to say after the game."I was convinced before the game and after I feel the same. Claudio is going to make mistakes in the future, I'll tell you now - he won't save all the goals. I'm pretty sure of that."

Two players who are unlikely to need a morale boost from their boss are midfielders David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne. The duo continued superb early season form at Old Trafford, where De Bruyne opened the scoring and Silva schemed inventively throughout.

Guardiola has deployed them centrally as opposed to in wide attacking areas but played down his influence, citing the good fortune of both players being free from the injury issues that plagued them during Manuel Pellegrini's final season in charge."When they were fit under Manuel, they were amazing," he added."I didn't discover them. I just put them on the pitch in good condition."

Scholes: Everyone is expecting Blind to fail... including me!

Paul Scholes remains unconvinced by Daley Blind in Manchester United's defence, insisting people are "expecting him to be found out".

The 26-year-old has played every minute of United's Premier League campaign thus far as a centre-back despite Chris Smalling, last season's Players' Player of the Year, fit and available for selection.

Scholes has praised Blind's performances alongside new signing Eric Bailly but feels it is only a matter of time before opposition players take advantage of the Netherland international's diminutive stature.

"Blind is a better defensive midfielder for United than he is a centre-back, but he’s been an excellent partner for Eric Bailly so far this season, hence why Chris Smalling is not in the team at the moment," Scholes is quoted as saying by the Manchester Evening News.

"Yet, he's not won everybody over yet. Why? Because he's physically limited in the Premier League and people are expecting him to be found at some point. I suppose I still am, and against City he was found wanting against a dynamic Kevin de Bruyne. I would rather see Smalling partner Bailly in the long-term.”"
