Bayern 4-1 PSV: Muller, Lewandowski & Robben on target in simple win

    joshua-kimmich-thomas-muller-bayern-munich-champions-league-19102016_ze7ivjk1b4p41hgtns0556lt1.jpg

Bayern Munich ended their scrappy run of form to remain on course for a place in the Champions League knock-out stages as they downed PSV 4-1 at the Allianz Arena.

Thomas Muller found the net for just the second time this season on 13 minutes, before the in-form Joshua Kimmich made it seven goals in his last eight appearances with a close-range header.

PSV halved the arrears through a Luciano Narsingh breakaway goal just before the break, but Robert Lewandowski and Arjen Robben helped Bayern extend their record-breaking run of consecutive Champions League home wins to 14.
The victory was a first in four games for Carlo Ancelotti's men who really should have made the game safe before half-time, with Robben, Muller, David Alaba and Lewandowski all going close.

Ancelotti had blasted his side's mentality after drawing with Frankfurt at the weekend and although the German champions were superbly fluent going forward, the Italian may well have been less impressed by their defensive performance as Luuk de Jong and Narsingh proved a constant threat throughout. The result puts Bayern five points clear of PSV and Rostov in Group D after the first three rounds.

Bayern came flying out of the blocks, with Muller wasting a great chance to give them the lead as early as the third minute, while Robben and Alaba were off-target as the PSV defence creaked from the off.

Jeroen Zoet met Lewandowski's curler with a smart parry, but the goalkeeper was badly let down by his defence from the resulting corner, as Robben was allowed to pick out a completely unmarked Muller who found the roof of the net from close range. There was no let-up for the visitors as Bayern continued to launch wave after wave of attacks and soon doubled their advantage.

The irresistible Alaba again got away down the left and his deflected cross fell kindly for Kimmich who was left with the simple task of nodding home from less than a yard out at the far post.

Kimmich almost grabbed his second of the night moments later, Zoet reacting smartly to keep out the midfielder's angled strike.Having completely dominated proceedings, however, Bayern switched off just before the break, allowing PSV to score with their first shot of the match.

Gaston Pereiro's superb throughball found Narsingh racing into the box and Manuel Neuer could not get enough of a hand to the winger's shot to prevent it from finding the net via the post.

There was no let up in the goalmouth action at the start of the second half as Thiago sent Lewandowski clean through, only for the Pole to drag his shot wide. At the other end, De Jong headed over and the lively Pereiro drew a fine save from Neuer.Seemingly stung by those near-misses, Bayern mounted an immediate response and duly made it 3-1 just before the hour mark.

Robben was the creator, cutting in from the right and rifling in a fierce, left-footed shot which Zoet could only parry out to the lurking Lewandowski, who headed into an empty net from six yards.

Six minutes from time, Robben added some further gloss to the scoreline by heading a clever chip from Thiago over the advancing Zoet.

Arsenal 6-0 Ludogorets: Ozil bags hat-trick as Gunners romp to easy win

    mesut-ozil-arsenal-ludogorets-razgrad_17wzl7oqn0j3c1mbjqnyiywbw0.jpg

Mesut Ozil was devastating in front of goal with a second-half hat-trick as Arsenal surged to an easy 6-0 win over Ludogorets in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Having drawn with Paris Saint-Germain and beaten Basel, Arsene Wenger's men retained top spot in Group A as they easily put Ludogorets to the sword, Ozil starring while Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also found the net.Sanchez's marvellous lob opened the scoring after 12 minutes, with Walcott's eighth goal of the season making it 2-0 shortly before half-time.

Oxlade-Chamberlain struck in the 46th minute to kill off any remaining Ludogorets hope, and it was plain sailing from that point onwards.Ozil added a fourth 10 minutes later, with two further efforts from the German in the final 10 minutes of normal time completing the rout.

Arsenal will progress from Group A should they replicate the victory in the reverse fixture in Bulgaria and PSG avoid defeat against Ludogorets. The hosts consistently found space in behind the visiting defence early on and, after Oxlade-Chamberlain fired wide, he sent Sanchez away for the opener.

The Chilean took Oxlade-Chamberlain's pass down the left channel and evaded one defender before delicately lifting a fine effort over Vladislav Stoyanov and into the far corner.

Ludogorets did threaten, however, with David Ospina required to deny Wanderson's blast at the near post. Jonathan Cafu then rounded the goalkeeper, but spurned the chance with a tame shot back across goal. The outside of the post prevented Wanderson from levelling with a low drive after Opsina had thwarted Virgil Misidjan's initial effort.

Walcott found himself in the clear at the other end, only to see Stoyanov make a smart stop, yet the England winger gave the hosts breathing space three minutes before the break.

Ozil appeared to overhit his cross, but Walcott checked his run and curled home from around 25 yards.Stoyanov was called upon again prior to the interval as he kept out Sanchez's close-range header.Within seconds of the restart, though, Arsenal extended their advantage to move out of sight.

Some magical close control from Sanchez created a crossing opportunity for Kieran Gibbs, and when a low delivery fell kindly for Oxlade-Chamberlain , the 23-year-old tucked a finish into the bottom-right corner.A fourth soon followed as Ozil slid home after latching on to a magnificent ball over the top from Santi Cazorla.

Stoyanov responded by getting down to repel Oxlade-Chamberlain's volley, but he was helpless as Ozil added his second and Arsenal's fifth.Lucas Perez accelerated onto a pass in behind, with his cross finding Ozil unmarked at the back post for a simple finish.

And Ozil then added his third to round off the scoring as he met Perez's ball in from the edge of the area with a fierce volley that left Stoyanov with no chance.

Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 Basel: French champions waltz to home victory

    lucas-psg-basel-champions-league-19102016_13xu6olws6t7o12bhq6l7tr4xz.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain edged closer to progression to the Champions League last 16 with a controlling 3-0 win over Basel on Tuesday.

The French champions are four points adrift of Nice at the top of the Ligue 1 table in Unai Emery's first season in charge and they were second best for long periods at the Parc des Princes.

Michael Lang and Seydou Doumbia were each thwarted by the woodwork in the first half for Basel while Renato Steffen also wasted a gilt-edged chance to open the scoring for the Swiss side. And Basel were eventually punished for their profligacy in the 40th minute as Angel Di Maria fired in his first goal of the season.

Lucas Moura capitalised on a mistake from Marek Suchy, who later became the third Basel player to hit the goal frame, to make it 2-0, with Edinson Cavani applying gloss to the scoreline with a late penalty.

Despite the underwhelming nature of the performance, PSG can seal a place in the knock-out rounds with victory in the reverse fixture in Switzerland, providing Arsenal avoid defeat against Ludogorets.

Basel had PSG on the ropes early on as Lang's header clattered the woodwork before Steffen was denied by Alphonse Areola one-on-one and Doumbia blazed the rebound over.

Adrien Rabiot's low long-range drive had represented PSG's best effort of the first half until Di Maria went close to breaking the deadlock in spectacular fashion on the half-hour, acrobatically volleying wide after Lucas and Marco Verratti combined well.

But Basel continued to enjoy the better opportunities and were again denied by the frame of the goal as Doumbia nodded Matias Delgado's superb cross against the far post.PSG immediately countered and Rabiot forced Basel goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik into action with a thunderous swerving effort from the edge of the area.

However, Vaclik was helpless to stop PSG taking the lead five minutes before half-time. Rabiot was again involved as Blaise Matuidi latched onto his pass down the left flank, with Cavani laying the France midfielder's deflected cross back for Di Maria to lash home.Di Maria almost turned provider shortly after the restart, Cavani meeting his right-wing free-kick with a header that clipped the outside of the post.

Cavani wasted another opportunity as he could only muster a tame strike when through on goal down the right-hand side, but mattered little when Lucas doubled the lead with a simple finish. The Brazil winger coolly slotted in from close range after Suchy sliced Serge Aurier's low right-wing cross into his path.

Suchy would have immediately atoned for his mistake had PSG's goal not continued to lead a charmed life, the centre-back striking the left-hand post with a header from Delgado's free-kick.

But there was to be no reward for Basel, with PSG finally able to take their foot off the gas ahead of this weekend's Classique with Marseille, though Cavani added a finishing touch with a confident penalty after being felled by Lang.

Napoli 2-3 Besiktas: Aboubakar nets double as visitors win it late

    besiktas-celebrating-vs-napoli-champions-league_i9wgrr0tg9hv1so2h1otc1qfi.jpg

Vincent Aboubakar's dramatic late header saw Besiktas record a scarcely-deserved 3-2 win at Napoli in Wednesday's Champions League encounter at the Stadio San Paolo.

In a pulsating fixture in Naples, the visitors had twice squandered the lead with Adriano Correia and Aboubakar's first cancelled out by Dries Mertens and a Manolo Gabbiadini penalty respectively. However, there was late drama when Aboubakar nodded in from close range to earn a crucial away victory for the Turkish champions in a tight Group B.

Napoli will feel aggrieved at letting the match slip having enjoyed the better of the game on home soil, and Lorenzo Insigne's missed penalty early in the second half with the score at 2-1 proved costly.

For Aboubakar, who pounced on a Jorginho's mistake to make it 2-1, it marks a return to form for a striker that has struggled since moving to Besiktas on loan from Porto in August and he had failed to score prior to the encounter.

His first goals have helped lift Besiktas to second in the pool, though, just one point adrift of Maurizio Sarri's side - who have six points from three matches.Napoli made a bright start and a clever corner routine involving Faouzi Ghoulam and Insigne led to a chance for Mertens in the third minute, but he blasted over the top.

Besiktas went in front with their first meaningful attack, though. Tolgay Arslan set Ricardo Quaresma free down the right and the Portugal international's low cross to the back post found Adriano, who beat Manuel Reina from close range.

Unperturbed, Napoli continued to dominate and deservedly equalised on the half-hour mark. Jose Callejon sprung the offside trap to meet Marek Hamsik's ball over the top and he drilled in a low cross for Mertens to tap home inside the six-yard box.

However, Besiktas caught Napoli cold again seven minutes before the break. Jorginho's poor pass was easily picked off by Aboubakar and he slotted his shot past Reina.

Napoli had a great chance to level early after the break when referee Sergei Karasev pointed to the spot after Fabricio brought down Mertens inside the area, however the goalkeeper made amends for his error by pushing Insigne's tame effort wide.

However, the hosts had another chance from the spot in the 69th minute when Caner Erkin was adjudged to have hauled down Mertens inside the box and Gabbiadini fired home the resulting penalty.Gabbiadini had the ball in the net again shortly after, but the play had already been brought back for offside.

And Besiktas made the most of the reprieve four minutes from time as Aboubakar headed past a helpless Reina from Quaresma's free-kick.

Barcelona 4-0 Manchester City: Messi on fire as Bravo sees red on return

    neymar-lionel-messi-barcelona-manchester-city-champions-league_i2ko8echb8h21ofv753two1n8.jpg

Lionel Messi marked his return to the Barcelona starting line-up with a hat-trick as a 4-0 win over 10-man Manchester City preserved a perfect start to this season's Champions League campaign for Luis Enrique's men.

Messi came off the bench following a groin injury to score in the 4-0 weekend win over Deportivo La Coruna and he netted a 17th-minute opener at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

City boss Pep Guardiola was back at the ground with which he will for ever be inextricably linked and his team posed plenty of questions either side of Barcelona going in front, until a mindless red card for Claudio Bravo resulted in the game racing away from them.

In the 53rd minute, the former Barcelona goalkeeper – whose arrival at Guardiola's behest prompted Joe Hart's Torino loan exile – handled Luis Suarez's shot having failed to clear danger outside his area.

It was the fourth time in five Champions League defeats to Barcelona that City found themselves operating with reduced numbers and a little over a quarter of an hour later, Messi made the matchball his own.

A pair of rash challenges from Barcelona substitute Jeremy Mathieu meant the closing stages were a 10-a-side affair, but the LaLiga champions were already safely established five points above City at the Group C summit and could even absorb a late Neymar penalty miss, for which the Brazilian compensated by adding the fourth.

Sergio Aguero being stationed on the visitors' bench hogged the immediate pre-match attention, but Luis Enrique had to delve into his subs early on when Jordi Alba limped off to be replaced by Lucas Digne.

The Spain left-back was second best defending a pair of Raheem Sterling runs early on before a likely tormentor was on hand to puncture the visitors' promising start.Helped to hustle possession away from Aleksandar Kolarov, Messi capitalised on a slip from Fernandinho to shimmy past Bravo and slot home.

City continued to press Barcelona deep in their own territory, but were almost undone by a long ball from centre-back Samuel Umtiti – Bravo scampering out to deny Neymar – before Ivan Rakitic headed over when unmarked on the end of a Messi free-kick.

David Silva, whose robust tackle meant Gerard Pique was the second Barcelona defender to withdraw through injury, played in Nolito to force a 37th-minute save from Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

The Germany goalkeeper then excelled himself with a plunging stop to thwart compatriot Ilkay Gundogan, although he was rooted to the spot when John Stones powered wide from Silva's set-piece delivery.

There was still time for Barcelona to offer a reminder of their attacking threat in first-half stoppage time, with Suarez spinning past Stones and forcing Bravo to turn behind at the second attempt.

Kevin De Bruyne twice broke encouragingly down the Barcelona left after the restart, but a familiar theme of City's previous encounters with the Barcelona re-emerged.Bravo's downfall was all of his own making, as Suarez read his foray towards midfield and made him pay dearly.

To compound Guardiola's problems, captain Pablo Zabaleta suffered a bloodied foot in a challenge with Digne in the build-up to the red card incident and, although Messi lifted the resulting free-kick over, he soon made the numerical advantage count by clipping an unerring low shot past replacement Willy Caballero from the edge of the area.

Another City error in the 69th minute error made it 3-0 as the otherwise impressive Gundogan passed absent-mindedly back towards his own goal, allowing Suarez to dash past Stones and lay a simple finish on a plate for Messi.

Two fouls in three minutes on the still-lively Sterling saw Mathieu join Bravo in the changing rooms, while Caballero perhaps stated a case to be preferred to his haphazard colleague by guessing correctly to keep out Neymar's penalty after Kolarov hacked down Messi.

The Brazil star would not be denied as he danced through a weary City backline to complete the scoring and a humiliating evening for Guardiola, who is now winless in four matches.

Rostov 0-1 Atletico Madrid: Carrasco nabs Rojiblancos winner

    ferreira-carrasco-rostov-atletico-madrid-champions-league_o5onyh6rsk8q1q6n835e0mdqk.jpg

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco was again Atletico Madrid's hero as he volleyed home the winner in Wednesday's 1-0 Champions League victory at Rostov. The Russian side had not suffered a defeat in any competition at home since May 2 2015 but a dominant Atletico were clearly a class above.

Their persistence paid off when Carrasco, who scored a hat-trick in Sunday's 7-1 battering of Granada, eventually found the goal to take Atleti's Group D tally to nine points from three matches.

Atletico were all over their hosts in the first half and should have broken the deadlock on numerous occasions, with Angel Correa particularly culpable after missing two clear-cut chances.

The vistors' control remained a constant after the break and they did eventually take one of their chances, as Carrasco produced a tidy finish in a tricky situation.

Rostov looked a little more attack-minded once behind, but Diego Simeone's men had no trouble seeing things out in trademark fashion and keeping them ahead of Bayern Munich with their third 1-0 win of the round-robin stage.Victory in the return fixture will now guarantee last season's runners-up progression to the last 16.

Atletico began with the confidence of a side that scored seven on Sunday and should have been ahead in just the second minute when Correa flashed wide of the target after Soslan Dzhanaev failed to hold on to Carrasco's free-kick.

The visitors had little trouble asserting control over Rostov but wasted another good chance went begging as Carrasco cut inside his marker and tested Dzhanaev after a clever flick from Antoine Griezmann.

Rostov crafted an opening of their own shortly after, but Sardar Azmoun scuffed a 20-yard effort straight at Jan Oblak instead of feeding Igor Kireev to his right after a brilliant Dmitry Poloz run.

That proved to be only a momentary lapse for Atletico, who again went close through Correa, who blasted wide from close range after a teasing Filipe Luis cross.

Atletico showed few signs of letting up early in the second half, but Rostov began to sit even deeper, resulting in fewer opportunities for Simeone's men. They did go close just before the hour-mark, though, as Fernando Torres met Juanfran's right-wing delivery and headed it on to the roof of the goal.

And the breakthrough arrived in the 62nd minute with Juanfran crucial again. The right-back's inviting cross was accidentally flicked on at the near post by a defender and Carrasco smashed in from a tight angle.

Griezmann almost made certain of the victory as he raced on to Carrasco's scooped pass and saw his header pushed away from the top-left corner by Dzhanaev.

And Rostov were unable to punish that miss as Atletico held on to secure a straightforward win that leaves them with one foot in the knockout stages.

Celtic 0-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Toure blunders gift Schubert's men victory

    stindl-cropped_19pzvtk4zlek11k6pacigkbief.jpg

Borussia Monchengladbach revived their hopes of progression from Champions League Group C with a deserved 2-0 win over Celtic in Glasgow on a night to forget for defender Kolo Toure.

Gladbach were the stronger team in a goalless first half and took the lead shortly before the hour mark when captain Lars Stindl struck after a defensive error from Toure.

Celtic did not have the same cutting edge as the visitors and failed to create a clear opportunity for an equaliser in the closing stages before another dreadful Toure mistake saw him lose possession, allowing Andre Hahn to seal the victory.

With Barcelona cruising to victory over Manchester City in the group's other game, Gladbach's win - their first in the European Cup since 1977 - puts them up to third place, just one point behind Pep Guardiola's side at the halfway stage.

After defeat in the first competitive meeting between the two teams, Celtic are bottom of the pile a further two points back and are now in desperate need of a result in the return game in Germany on November 1.

Gladbach were the first to threaten, with Ibrahima Traore's strike after a cut-back from Oscar Wendt brilliantly saved by Craig Gordon, who then reacted quickly to prevent Hahn from converting the rebound.Gordon had to make another strong stop when Julian Korb slipped a through a pass that allowed Jonas Hofmann to strike powerfully at goal.

Celtic were struggling to assert themselves on the match, but wasted a good opportunity just before the break when Tom Rogic's precise throughball led to Scott Sinclair lashing a rushed finish over the bar.The visitors got their deserved breakthrough on 57 minutes and it was Stindl's pass that started the attack.

When Toure failed in his attempt to shepherd the ball out of play, Hahn took advantage to find the onrushing Stindl and the skipper struck low between the legs of Gordon Brendan Rodgers brought on Leigh Griffiths and Patrick Roberts in the closing stages, but despite the on-loan City winger's lively cameo, the hosts barely troubled Yann Sommer and it was game over with 13 minutes remaining.

Toure dawdled in possession, Stindl prodded a pass forward to Hahn and the striker lashed home a shot high past Gordon just as the former Liverpool defender attempted to challenge on a miserable evening for him and the hosts.

Dynamo Kiev 0-2 Benfica: Portuguese champions cruise to first group victory

    salvio_3x8kaqof7ing1r6w2prrogxzq.jpg

A goal in each half from Eduardo Salvio and Franco Cervi sealed Benfica's first win of this year's Champions League in a 2-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev.

Salvi's early spot-kick and a neat finish from Cervi shortly after the interval were enough to hand them the three points to boost their Group B qualification hopes.
Second-half heroics from Benfica's Ederson protected their advantage as Kiev fought for a route back into the match, the goalkeeper saving expertly from Junior Moraes and Andriy Yarmolenko.

It was a textbook away performance from the Portuguese champions, happy to cede possession to their hosts and defend resolutely before hitting them on the counter.

Serhiy Rebrov's men have now won just two of their last nine games in all competitions and prop up the group with just one point, ahead of the reverse fixture between the two clubs in Lisbon next month.

Benfica tore out of the blocks and into their hosts, and were rewarded as early as the ninth minute when referee David Fernandez Borbalan pointed to the spot after Vitorino Antunes clipped the heel of Goncalo Guedes as he skipped into the penalty area.Salvio stepped up and sent Artur Rudko the wrong way, slotting calmly to the goalkeeper's left for his second goal in as many Champions League games.

Kiev's talismanic captain Yarmolenko almost dragged them level, first picking out fellow winger Derlis Gonzalez at the far post to head over, then teeing up Serhiy Sydorchuk five minutes before the interval to fire into the side netting.

The visitors were a constant danger on the break and Salvio could have doubled his tally from a quick Benfica counter, but shot too close to Rudko.Salvio turned provider for Benfica's second in the 54th minute, squaring for Cervi after a darting run down the right flank.

Cervi saw his first effort blocked, before composing himself and wrong-footing Rudko with a sweet finish.Kiev responded positively and the visitors had goalkeeper Ederson to thank for a string of impressive saves to protect their two-goal advantage.

First he came out quickly to smother Moraes' shot as he raced free in the box, before a superb double save after 66 minutes from Yarmolenko and Sydorchuk as the hosts pushed for a way back into the contest.

He almost blotted his copy book just moments before, racing out to try to punch clear a cross and missing completely, but a surprised Yarmolenko could not direct his header goalwards.

Yarmolenko really should have grabbed a consolation in the dying stages as he attempted to acrobatically convert a rebound, but Victor Lindelof somehow blocked his effort to preserve his side's clean sheet.

Barcelona trouncing not my worst - Guardiola

    pepguardiola-cropped_13s4khduev75913ddo8mjuo4pg.jpg

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says his team's 4-0 loss to Barcelona was not the worst of his career.

A Lionel Messi hat-trick and a Neymar strike saw Barca to a resounding win in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Claudio Bravo's red card early in the second half, with City trailing 1-0, proved particularly costly, while Jeremy Mathieu was sent off late for Barca.Guardiola, however, denied it was his worst loss, pointing to a 4-0 defeat suffered against Real Madrid while he was at Bayern Munich in 2014.

"The worst defeat of my career was with Bayern against Madrid," he said."It was the whole situation and the mistakes I made with the starting line-up."Guardiola felt his team created enough opportunities to get on the scoresheet, but he praised Barca's quality.

"Last time with Bayern [in 2014] we didn't create chances but today we did, we created chances to score one or two goals," he said."But Barca can punish you, they have a lot of quality. We controlled, except the goal."

Guardiola created a monster in Messi - and it keeps coming back to haunt him

    lionel-messi-barcelona-manchester-city-champions-league_1qmqb60a51pl41hrqvda4wnkmi.jpg

Pep Guardiola has seen it all before. The Catalan coach led Barcelona to the greatest era in the club's history with Lionel Messi at the forefront of his superb side between 2008 and 2012. But he created a monster - and now it keeps coming back to haunt him.

During his tenure at Camp Nou, Guardiola always admitted that Messi made the difference. "Without him, we would be competitive," he often said. "But we wouldn't have achieved all that we have."

However, he had played his part in the Argentine's astronomical rise to become the world's finest footballer. Before Pep's arrival as coach in 2008, Messi was fantastic yet fragile, mesmerising but also inconsistent. And his best return in front of goal was 17 over a single season.

In 2008-09, that changed dramatically. Messi looked fitter, faster and hungrier in a spectacular season in which he helped Barca to the treble and netted 38 goals along the way. "I play closer to the area now," he would say. But it was much more than that. Pep paid attention to every detail of Leo's game - and made him the best player in the world.

Four consecutive Ballons d'Or followed for the Argentine and, more importantly for Barcelona, an astonishing 14 trophies out of 19 in the Guardiola era before the Catalan coach left to take a sabbatical in 2012.

Pep then returned to Camp Nou to watch Barca against City as Bayern Munich boss in March 2015, witnessing a Messi masterclass from the stands and covering his eyes in disbelief when the Argentine nutmegged James Milner. "It is a luxury to watch Leo," he said afterwards.

Asked about stopping his former forward ahead of Bayern's clash against Barca later on in the same season in the Champions League, Guardiola was blunt. "There is no defence that can stop him," he said. "It's impossible. He is used to players defending against him any way they can and he always ends up enjoying success. He is too good."

That proved to be the case again as Messi hit two sensational strikes in a 3-0 win for Barca in the first leg of the semi-final between the two sides at Camp Nou, the first a fierce drive from outside the box to break the deadlock and the second a clever chip over Manuel Neuer from a tight angle after he had left Jerome Boateng grounded.

This time, though, City made a real game of it in the first half and had chances to hurt Barca. But again, Guardiola was powerless to resist Messi, who rounded Claudio Bravo to score the first after Fernandinho had slipped, brilliantly culminating a move he himself had started outside the area with Andres Iniesta.

And after Bravo was sent off for a ridiculous handball outside the box, it was Messi - who else? - that further punished Pep and City. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner lashed home from long range to make it 2-0 and completed his hat-trick from much closer in after Ilkay Gundogan gifted the ball to Luis Suarez. Later, he also won a penalty and let Neymar take the spot-kick, the Brazilian missing before adding a fourth in an ultimately one-sided victory.

That is twice Pep has returned to Camp Nou as a visiting coach now, and the stats make difficult reading for the 45-year-old: no wins, no draws and no goals in two defeats, with seven conceded, five of those scored by the world's best player. There is no doubt that Guardiola helped create a monster in Messi - and now even he cannot stop him.

That's life for goalkeepers - Ter Stegen sympathises with Bravo plight

Game-changing errors such as the one committed by Manchester City's Claudio Bravo on Wednesday are the unfortunate lot of goalkeepers, according to Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barcelona ran out 4-0 winners over their Champions League Group C rivals at Camp Nou, with Lionel Messi hitting a hat-trick before Neymar recovered from a saved penalty to complete the scoring after 89 minutes.

The match was poised at 1-0 early in the second half when Bravo dashed out of his area, made a hash of a clearance and handled Luis Suarez's shot, leaving referee Milorad Mazic with little choice but to send him off.

Ter Stegen looked on as his team-mates punished the mistake made by the man he was understudy to for the past two seasons, before Bravo signed for Pep Guardiola's City.

"Bravo and I talked about other things, but in the end these are things that happen - that's life for the goalkeeper," the Germany international, whose own slip-ups played a significant role in a recent loss to Celta Vigo, told beIN Sport."This happens sometimes but [in the long term there is] no problems for him or for his team.

"Until the red card we had problems. At first it was a very difficult match, but we were finally able to make a lot of goals. For us it was very good."Messi was the familiar source of most of those strikes as he hit the 37th treble of an astonishing career, but Ter Stegen hailed a team effort.

"Leo Messi is very important to us, to our way of playing, but we also have many players who can score and move the ball," he added."We have one of the best teams in the world, but you have to prove it every week."

Messi becomes all-time top scorer at home in Champions League

Lionel Messi's hat-trick in Barcelona's 4-0 demolition of Manchester City on Wednesday establishes him as the scorer of the most goals at home in the Champions League. The Argentine's strikes either side of half time took his tally at the Camp Nou to 50, yet another milestone in the forward's career as he surpassed Raul on 49.

Messi's tally of 16 goals in total against English teams establishes them as his favourite opponents, while only Real Madrid have scored more Champions League hat-tricks (nine) than the seven under his belt.

Guardiola laments Bravo red after heavy Barca defeat

Pep Guardiola conceded the game was "over" when Manchester City were reduced to 10 men in the 4-0 Champions League defeat to his former club Barcelona.

The LaLiga champions are five points clear at the top of Group C thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick and a solo goal from Neymar that added insult to injury for ragged opponents a minute from time.

City asked questions of their hosts after Messi's 17th-minute opener at Camp Nou, but Claudio Bravo's botched 53rd-minute clearance and subsequent handball to prevent a Luis Suarez goal left them with a mountain to climb.

"At that level it's hard, but until 10 against 11 the game was open and we competed against a very good team with huge personality," visiting manager Guardiola told BT Sport after a painful outing at the ground where he made his name.

"We created enough chance to score goals. After [the red card] the game was over."Of course [Bravo] is disappointed because he is a huge professional, but it is part of the game."

Bravo's error is particularly damning for Guardiola, given the Chile international's arrival from Barca heralded the departure of England goalkeeper and fans' favourite Joe Hart to Torino.

But the former Bayern Munich boss recognised an increasing trend of individual mistakes that have stained a run of four matches without a win in all competitions for the Premier League leaders."It seems every game there is something like that – own goals, missed penalties and things. We have to change the dynamic," the Spaniard added."I asked my players to play with responsibility and we did it.

"We were there, we were in the game. We were pressing, we had the possession and we made the chances. We did it, but we didn't take the chances and you have to do that to win the game."Guardiola, who left top scorer Sergio Aguero on the bench, added: "We knew from the beginning that it would be a tough group.

"Now we have to recover and think about Southampton [in the Premier League on Sunday]. After we are going to see what happens next."
