:love:Manchester United 4-1 Fenerbahce: Pogba nets two as Van Persie scores on Old Trafford return

    manchester-united-fenerbahce-europa-league_ena3s3l3jz6h1dxyjssykuqqy.jpg

Paul Pogba showed glimpses of his true quality as he netted a stunning goal as part of a double in Manchester United's 4-1 Europa League hammering of Fenerbahce on Thursday.

The Frenchman led the way for United in an emphatic win to bounce back from individual criticism attracted after a poor showing in Monday's 0-0 draw at Liverpool, while Robin van Persie netted a late consolation on his return to Old Trafford.

United took a while to get going, though, as they struggled to craft opportunities before Pogba converted a penalty just after the half-hour mark and fellow Frenchman Anthony Martial followed the midfielder's lead with a second spot-kick in quick succession.

Pogba effectively wrapped things up for United with a spectacular strike just before the break after good work from Wayne Rooney – the captain starting for the first time since the EFL Cup win at Northampton Town on September 21.

The pair combined again at the start of the second half to set Jesse Lingard up for an excellent fourth.

Van Persie's late goal drew a huge round of applause from the crowd, including the watching Alex Ferguson, but it mattered little in the context of the match as United cruised on to six points from three matches in Group A with one of their more convincing wins under Jose Mourinho.Fenerbahce's compact defence and United's lack of cutting edge resulted in a dearth of opportunities until a fatal error in the 31st minute.

Juan Mata brilliantly brought down Michael Carrick's long-range pass in the area and the off-balance Simon Kjaer tripped the Spaniard, with Pogba coolly dispatching the spot-kick into the left side of the net.

And United had a second penalty just three minutes later, as Martial drove into the Fenerbahce box and went down under pressure from Sener Ozbayrakli before slotting away himself.

The visitors almost gave themselves a lifeline shortly after – Souza beating Matteo Darmian only to see David De Gea block his effort from 10 yards. But United took full advantage of that let-off and grabbed a third on the stroke of half-time.

Kjaer was culpable again, as Rooney intercepted his misplaced pass and crossed to Lingard, who showed great awareness to tee up Pogba for a marvellous first-time finish into the top-left corner from 20 yards.United added further gloss to the score just two minutes into the second half.

Pogba found Rooney on the edge of the box and the striker laid the ball off to Lingard, who lashed a fine 25-yard effort into the bottom-left corner.Van Persie almost pulled one back after an hour, but his trademark curling left-footed strike flew just wide of De Gea's right-hand post.

Mata should have given United a fifth 12 minutes from the end when played through by substitute Memphis Depay, but was thwarted by Volkan Demirel.
Van Persie did eventually get his goal, stabbing in from close range after a teasing Emmanuel Emenike cross to spark a huge ovation, but it did nothing to stop the hosts cruising to a comfortable win.

Inter 1-0 Southampton: Candreva grabs three points for hosts

    antonio-candreva-inter-southampton_1uv7gma8zjnua1fwxmm4rs4pjp.jpg

Antonio Candreva's second-half goal proved enough to secure ten-man Inter's first Europa League win of the season as they beat Southampton 1-0 at San Siro.

The Italian side had come into Thursday's game rooted to the bottom of Group K having failed to win either of their opening two fixtures and looked set for more disappointment as the visitors dominated for an hour.

However, Candreva's superb 67th-minute finish secured a win that, while undoubtedly fortuitous, served to relieve the pressure on under-fire boss Frank de Boer.

And the Dutchman's side showed great resolve to seal the points having being forced to play out the final 13 minutes with ten men after Marcelo Brozovic picked up a second yellow card.

Another positive for Inter was the favourable reception afforded to skipper Mauro Icardi by the home fans following the Argentine's well-publicised falling out with a section of the club's support. The result snapped a run of four consecutive European defeats for the hosts and maintained their hopes of progressing to the knock-out phase.

But for two superb saves from Samir Handanovic in the final five minutes, Southampton would have claimed at least a point, which was the minimum their performance deserved.

Southampton came close to gifting Inter an early goal when Cuco Martina's loose backpass was pounced upon by Icardi and Fraser Forster had to react smartly to snuff out the danger.

Having survived that early scare, however, the visitors proceeded to dominate the rest of the half, Jay Rodriguez went agonisingly close to giving his side a deserved lead on 28 minutes.Rodriguez connected with Sam McQueen's fine low cross, only to see the ball cleared off the line by Yuto Nagatomo.

James Ward-Prowse then fired narrowly over the bar after fine approach work from Dusan Tadic, before the Serbian midfielder teed up Martina, who cut in from the right flank but fizzed his shot wide.Rodriguez again went close in the 38th minute, just failing to get a meaningful connection on a Martina delivery at the far post with the goal gaping.

Inter threatened shortly before the interval when Eder unleashed a fierce shot from just outside the box that whistled narrowly past Forster's right-hand post.

Rodriguez remained in the thick of things after the break as he was foiled by a last-ditch challenge from Miranda and carved out an opportunity for Charlie Austin, whose 20-yard drive flashed wide.At that stage it seemed only a matter of time before the English side took the lead, but instead it was Inter who broke the deadlock completely against the run of play.

Davide Santon whipped in a low cross from the left and, having got in front of Virgil van Dijk to meet it, Candreva rifled a superb shot past the helpless Forster into the top-left corner. Brozovic's senseless foul on Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg then rightly earned him a second yellow and Inter were left to hang on.

And cling on they did as Handanovic first denied Van Dijk and then produced an even better save to foil Austin, with Ward-Prowse firing wide with the final chance of the match.

Dundalk 1-2 Zenit: Mak & Giuliano lead comeback to deny Lilywhites

    ronan-finn-dundalk-20102016_1nys9qagh54y01m31d0yqwe8wx.jpg

Dundalk's unbeaten start to the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League group stage is over, after the Lilywhites surrendered a second-half lead to Zenit at Tallaght Stadium.

Robbie Benson's long-range opener was cancelled out by two goals in six minutes from Slovakian international Robert Mak and Giuliano, with Gabriel Sava's penalty save from Mauricio denying the Russians a late third.

With nine goals and a maximum six points from their first two games, Zenit were heavy favourites, with the five-time Russian champions boasting a starting XI brimming with internationals.

However, it was Dundalk who started strongest and nearly took the lead when Ronan Finn went close after a great first-time ball from David McMillan. In a move that was started by Dundalk right-back Sean Gannon, the Lilywhites full-back played a sharp ball into the feet of the striker, who duly deftly dinked the ball over the Zenit defence.

The Dundalk playmaker burned Zenit centre-back Nicolas Lombaerts down the right wing, and after taking a brief touch to steady himself, the former Hoops midfielder fired his right-footed shot just wide of the far post.

Oleg Shatov spurned an excellent chance to break the deadlock after a timely one-two with Zenit striker Artem Dzyuba. Dundalk left-back Dane Massey was caught badly out of position after failing to link up with Daryl Horgan while in possession, and it nearly proved to be crucial for the hosts as Shatov was just inches away from sneaking the ball inside the far-post when his right-footed shot drifted out for a goal kick.

Dundalk made the visitors pay less than two minutes later when Benson’s 25-yard effort deceived Zenit goalkeeper Lodygin who was sent the wrong way by the midfielder's swerving left-footed shot.

Benson’s goal looked like it was going to set up the biggest win in Dundalk history until Mak equalised in the 71st minute after linking up brilliantly with Zenit left-back Domenico Criscito.

Positioned just inside the Dundalk box, the Italian international found Mak with a timely pass that allowed the Russian winger to take a brief touch before tucking the ball neatly inside the far-post to equalise.

Massey came agonisingly close to giving Dundalk the lead again after a sublime ball into the box from Horgan, but the left-back’s header cannoned off the post.It was to be Dundalk’s last legitimate chance on goal as Brazilian international Giuliano sealed the game off in the 77th minute after combining brilliantly with Belgium international Axel Witsel.

Zenit substitute Mauricio had a chance to kill of the game when he was brought down in the box by Dundalk defender Brian Gartland but the Brazilian could not convert his own penalty after Sava guessed the right way.

The win for Zenit gives the five-time Russian champions a maximum nine points from three games while Dundalk remain in second on four points after Maccabi Tel-Aviv defeated AZ Alkmaar in Amsterdam.

Pogba no longer Premier League's 'worst player', jokes Man Utd boss Mourinho

    martial-pogba-cropped_1hsifz22i368e1vuvxg1ixqlge.jpg

Jose Mourinho quipped back at those questioning Paul Pogba's recent form as he playfully suggested that the Frenchman's starring role in Manchester United's 4-1 win over Fenerbahce saw him shake off his "worst player of the Premier League" tag.

Pogba scored twice as United comfortably disposed of Fenerbahce in the Europa League, with his second an exquisite first-time strike into the top-left corner from 25 yards out.

Robin van Persie netted a late consolation on his return to Old Trafford, but the match was already won by then and Mourinho reflected afterwards on Pogba's display in the wake of individual criticism he attracted with a poor showing in Monday's 0-0 draw at Liverpool.

"Two days ago he was the worst player of the Premier League and 48 hours later he is phenomenal," Mourinho said to BT Sport. "Listen, he needs time. "I was in Italy, I have worked in Italy. I know the pace, intensity and characteristics of the league well.

"To be in Italy for four, five years and then come back to the Premier League is not easy. I was not expecting him to adapt with click of the fingers. "Even top players need time."

United took their foot off the gas a little once Jesse Lingard had put them 4-0 up just after the break and, although Mourinho was frustrated by that, he acknowledged it was an understandable consequence of making numerous changes to the team.

The United boss said: "They [Fenerbahce] came with a good defensive plan and stopped us for the first periods of the game but then the first two goals – two clear penalties – opened the door for quality and I think we played well for periods.

"With four goals we stopped, which is natural and then they try to have a reaction. I'm never happy to concede a goal, especially if the goal is not a perfect one.

"It came down to a lack of concentration, but that is the nature of the players and the nature of lots of changes. That's acceptable."The important thing is that we now have six points."

Under-fire De Boer still sure of reaching knockout stages

    frank-de-boer-cropped_12ly84drfqxsp1nfn6fu4ib5w3.jpg

Frank de Boer insisted Inter can still progress to the knockout stage of the Europa League following their 1-0 victory over Southampton at San Siro.

The win was Inter's first in Group K at the third attempt and the Serie A side more than rode their luck, as Southampton dominated for long periods, created a string of chances and were unfortunate not to earn at least a point.

Antonio Candreva rifled home what proved to be the only goal midway through the second half, but Inter were forced to play out the final 13 minutes with 10 men following the dismissal of Marcelo Brozovic and were grateful to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic for making several saves.

The result snapped a three-game losing streak for Inter to ease the pressure on De Boer, who is eyeing a top-two finish in the group, though his side sit bottom, one behind second-placed Southampton."I must compliment the team," he said. "We played with a lot of discipline.

"In the first half it was a bad game, but in the second half we did better and the goal from Candreva was fantastic. After the Brozovic red card we suffered, but I really want to give my compliments to the guys because we have held out to the end. "In the last 10 minutes we struggled, but we have a fantastic goalkeeper."We have to continue like this and win every game if we are to make the top two in the group. If we keep winning, we will have the chance to go through."

With Inter currently languishing in 11th place in Serie A having won only three of their eight games, there had been speculation in the Italian media that a defeat against Southampton would see De Boer sacked after less than three months in charge.

But the Dutchman played down suggestions that the players may have lifted their performance in a bid to keep him in the job."Did the boys play for me?" he said. "It is important that they played for Inter.

"I have faith in my team, in my players. In other matches they lacked concentration, but we played with discipline throughout the game. It is crucial for a team to always work together in order to achieve a victory like we did." Inter return to league action on Sunday with a trip to Atalanta.

:cool:Mkhitaryan edging closer to comeback, says Manchester United boss Mourinho

    mkhitaryan-cropped_1v12l5oy2rd2m1f9a0xfgcn3j2.jpg

Jose Mourinho has said that off-season recruit Henrikh Mkhitaryan is close to returning to the Manchester United side after missing Thursday's Europa League clash with Fenerbahce.

Despite reports he would be included in United's matchday squad, Mkhitaryan was left out as Mourinho's men eased past their Turkish opponents 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan has not featured since United's Premier League derby loss to Manchester City on September 10 due to a thigh injury but Mourinho insisted the Armenia captain is edging closer to a comeback, having taken part in a strenuous training session on Thursday.

"The situation is that we played with [Jesse] Lingard, with [Juan] Mata and [Anthony] Martial," Mourinho told reporters as he revealed the reason behind Mkhitaryan's absence.

"I am not an Einstein, I don't know a tactical system to play with four wingers at the same time. He has to work more to get the intensity and the real fitness to play at the high level.

"To have him here tonight on the bench and to give him 15 to 20 minutes, like I did with Memphis [Depay], I thought it would be better for him to work the way he did yesterday and much harder, obviously.

"I thought it would be much better for him to work today, like he did in the specific session, than to wait for his chance. But he is ready. He is ready very soon."
United travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday.

Del Bosque: I rejected €10m offer from China

    vicentedelbosque-cropped_1ejzanhgwvti16hnnpzc2lhpo.jpg

Former Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque has revealed he turned down a lucrative €10million offer to work in China.

The mastermind of Spain's 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 titles, Del Bosque has been out of work since vacating his position following the European Championships in France.

The 65-year-old, however, could not be tempted into a move to China, though it remains to be seen whether the offer was to lead the national team or a side in the cashed-up Chinese Super League.

"I can confirm that I received a 10 million euro offer from China, but I am unsure if that was for a club or for the national team," Del Bosque told radio station Cope.

"To be honest, I didn't pay it much attention."Del Bosque added: "When I left Real Madrid I went to Turkey [In 2004] and did a good thing, was very enriching, but now would be hard pressed to leave Spain."Champions League and World Cup-winning coach Lippi - who guided heavyweights Guangzhou Evergrande to three CSL titles and AFC Champions League glory - is on the verge of replacing Gao Hongbo in charge of China.

Pogba hails Rooney: He let me take the penalty

    paul-pogba-cropped_1p70ap43vce7x1mdwlhg7i9bsm.jpg

Paul Pogba has revealed Wayne Rooney stepped aside to allow the summer signing to take a vital penalty as Manchester United secured a 4-1 win over Fenerbahce in the Europa League. The 23-year-old duly converted in the 31st minute to claim his second goal for the club, after Simon Kjaer had fouled Juan Mata inside the box.

He then passed the penalty-taking mantle to Anthony Martial, who also found the net three minutes later after being bundled over by Sener Ozbayrakli.

Pogba made it 3-0 to United in first-half stoppage time with a wonderful long-range strike, and Jesse Lingard added a fourth after the break before Robin van Persie marked his return to Old Trafford by netting a late consolation for the Turkish side.

The result moved United into second place in Group A, level on points with leaders Feyenoord, and Pogba was understandably delighted with both the performance and the result.

"We wanted the win because it was really important and now we are at the top of the group and are looking forward to the next game," he said."I told Wayne I wanted to take the penalty and he let me. I am very happy to score that penalty and from a player like him to let me [do that] it is big respect, so I am very glad.

"I feel comfortable with all of the team. It is just at the start of the season and there is still a long way to go and we want to go up and do our best and be top of the league."

United return to Premier League action on Sunday with an eagerly-anticipated visit to Chelsea, while their next Europa League fixture is the return clash with Fenerbahce in Istanbul on November 3.

Chelsea and Mourinho need a rebrand after last season's failure

    jose-mourinho_1jchwr6x6y1zk1gdrurk9h6jzq.jpg

Jose Mourinho and Chelsea remain affected by the destruction of their last relationship, despite trying to move on amicably from a divorce that had both legal battles and sporting humiliation.

Chelsea's problems began to turn serious at this point last year as the Blues dropped down to 15th place after defeat against West Ham. This hit home that things were about to change and that Mourinho's ambition to retain the Premier League title was not going to be achievable.

Mourinho was a proper Chelsea legend and a true blue, but it will take him a much longer time to become a red, as his sensational start at Chelsea brought immediate success to the Roman Abramavich era and gave the club something to build on, after 50 years without a title.

His first spell in charge was ended by "mutual consent," and it was a much softer parting of ways than what happened after Mourinho's last match at Stamford Bridge, when Chelsea lost 1-0 to Bournemouth.

Unfortunately, the second spell ended with a greater finality and left a much bigger scar upon the two sides with Mourinho's humour replaced with a frown; and Chelsea's chase for titles replaced with the need to simply reach the Champions League.

Mourinho's star shone so brightly at Chelsea, Real Madrid and Inter that he left himself exposed to be shot down. In being football's bad winner, he contrived to annoy opposing fans whilst successfully keeping the spotlight on himself.

He was the focus for broadcasters and journalists who ultimately enjoyed shooting him down during the worst season of his career. The end was also marred with Eva Carniero's employment tribunal that was a factor in destabilising Mourinho's dressing room.

Now the Manchester United manager is facing criticism for not being as tactically progressive as some of his rivals including the likes of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and, even his replacement, Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

At Stamford Bridge on Sunday, he will get the chance to send a stark message to his critics and prove that he has moved on, and that he is relevant. Yet, if he loses, the circus around his time with Chelsea and if he is still the best will continue. What happened that season has left an open wound that is still healing at Chelsea with an aging squad which is still a little short of quality to be guarenteed title contenders.

On the other side of the coin, Chelsea will not want to look over at Mourinho as the good old days and, although the only way should be up for Chelsea, a competitive Premier League could keep them away from Europe or title success for many years to come.

Conte has proved he is strong enough to take on the club's biggest characters, keeping Diego Costa on against Leicester City despite being publicly asked to do the opposite.

He should be the right man to take the club forward, but he will need to be backed up with a more progressive transfer policy than the club had under Mourinho, after he sold off the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku for older and short term replacements.

The early signs appear to be good for Chelsea with the former Juventus boss giving minutes to youth players and making difficult decisions when the old guard begin to struggle. Yet, the beatings at the hands of Arsenal and Liverpool are reminders of the work that need to be done to get over the past season.

After his side's 3-0 defeat against Arsenal, and in his lowest moment as Chelsea manager, Conte described Chelsea as "a great team only on paper." The comments were aimed to remind everyone around the club that progress could be slow to begin with.

Chelsea and Mourinho both need a rebrand. Chelsea have to become a mature giant that promotes youth from within their briliant academy and Mourinho needs to stay in Manchester for many years to come - while trying not to upset those he disagrees with.

Both sides have to continue to ask themselves hard questions after last season, but if they do the rewards will be great and plentiful.

Wenger urges Ozil to commit future to Arsenal

    mesut-ozil-celebrates-with-arsenal_l83upr8gx6fv1i94hrn4znyj2.jpg

Talks continue between Arsenal and influential playmaker Mesut Ozil over an extended contract at Emirates Stadium, says manager Arsene Wenger.Ozil continued his stellar form this season with a hat-trick in Wednesday's 6-0 demolition of Ludogorets in the Champions League.

The 28-year-old, like forward Alexis Sanchez, is out of contract in 2018 and Wenger urged his club to match the duo's ambitions in terms of winning major honours to secure their long-term futures.Speaking ahead of Saturday's Premier League match against Middlesbrough, the Frenchman said dialogue remained open.

"We are always in touch and that's our desire," said Wenger. "Mesut Ozil is 28 years old. He is in the prime of his career. We want him to contribute to the success of the club in the future."They want to be happy. They are happy at the club and I want them to commit to the club because I believe they are in the right place."

Ozil has long established himself as Arsenal's creator-in-chief, but his Champions League treble moved him on to six goals for the season and Wenger is keen to see further progress on that front.

"He works quite well in finishing in training," he said. "I believe that every player gets in the habit of having a division of his game and doesn't get out of boundaries that he has fixed himself.

"He experienced his game as a provider, but I think he is slowly getting the taste to think, 'maybe I can finish as well'."We want him to add that to his game because there is no reason why he should not finish and score."Hopefully the fact that he scored on Wednesday night can help that desire."

Santi Cazorla will be assessed having taken a kick in midweek before deciding whether he can line up behind Ozil in midfield.Striker Olivier Giroud (toe) could return in the EFL Cup tie against Reading in midweek, while Wales international Aaron Ramsey (hamstring) is targeting next weekend's trip to Sunderland.

'Carrick is Man Utd's Pirlo and must partner Pogba'

    michael-carrick-manchester-united_1j78uoclfl5qv1nq2o29qsb1fa.jpg

Michael Carrick must partner Paul Pogba in midfield as he is the closest Manchester United have to Andrea Pirlo, says Owen Hargreaves.

The world's most expensive player has struggled to replicate the form that convinced Jose Mourinho to part with £89 million to bring him back to Old Trafford after four years away.

However, Pogba started alongside Carrick for the first time this season on Thursday, scoring twice as United beat Fenerbahce in the Europa League, and Hargreaves feels their partnership is most effective.

"The player closest to Pirlo is Carrick that he had at Juventus when he was at his best," the former Man Utd midfielder told BT Sport."I think Mounrinho is trying to find his best partner, and I think Carrick should play in this team."

Man Utd are back in action on Sunday with a visit to Premier League title rivals Chelsea, with kick-off at 16:00 UK time.

Giggs: I'd love Modric at Man Utd!

    luka-modric-real-madrid-2016_gpmx6o8m83z614n6xor4wnhav.jpg

Ryan Giggs has revealed that he would love to see Luka Modric sign for Manchester United.

The Real Madrid midfielder was strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford during his Tottenham days although eventually decided to make the move to the Bernabeu in 2012.

And United legend Giggs would still be delighted to see the 31-year-old sign for the Red Devils, telling UEFA: "Croatia have great players and my current favourite is Modric - I would love him to join Man Utd!"

That would appear an almost impossible dream for Jose Mourinho's side, however, with Modric having only signed a new four-year deal with Madrid on October 18.

Indeed, the Croatia international revealed that it is his desire to end his career with the Liga giants, insisting he is part of the "best club in the world".

Bellerin: If Barcelona call me, I won't pick up!

    hector-bellerin-arsenal-2016_6gte92bj5g9czumrfdbk9dvj.jpg

Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin has responded to a fan question regarding a possible move to Barcelona, claiming he wouldn't pick up the phone if the Catalans tried to call him.

The 21-year-old Spaniard started his career at Barca before making the move to the Emirates Stadium in 2011 but is now being heavily linked with a return to Camp Nou.

Goal revealed back in September that Barca are set to renew their efforts to sign the full-back in the summer, with the club still searching for a long-term replacement for Dani Alves.
