Ibrahimovic: I rejected move to Van Gaal's Man Utd

    zlatan-ibrahimovic-cropped_c3d4ro6nbhra1no9k2vstovdr.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has revealed he turned down a move to Manchester United while Louis van Gaal was the club's manager.

Ibrahimovic was one of four high-profile new arrivals at Old Trafford this summer, joining on a free transfer after the expiry of his contract at Paris Saint-Germain.

On Wednesday, Jose Mourinho confirmed that United plan to trigger the option of a one-year extension in Ibrahimovic's contract, keeping him at the club for the 2017-18 season.

The former Sweden international does not regret his decision, however, to spend a fourth year at PSG before making the switch to the Premier League.

"I could have come here a year earlier but I stayed at PSG," Ibrahimovic told reporters ahead of United's Europa League match against Feyenoord. "I didn't feel the moment was there and I have no regrets."I came here when I was 35. I could stay at home and feel happy but no, I will travel alone and conquer wherever I go.

"I will never turn down a challenge. Many players will stay in one place and keep waiting for their mother to cook for them. I could have stayed in Malmo and been comfortable."I have found a club that is on a level will all the big clubs I have been at - Barcelona, AC Milan."

The first four months of the season have not gone entirely as planned for United, but Ibrahimovic remains determined to help return the club to contention for major honours.

"United haven't won any big trophies in the last years but we have people in position to bring the club back to where it belongs," he added. We are working hard for it. United has to be at the top every year, but it takes time."

United are battling directly with Feyenoord to progress to the next round of the Europa League, but Ibrahimovic says he has no extra motivation to beat the Dutch side as a result of his association with Ajax.

"It was a long time since I was in Holland - when I was in Ajax, Feyenoord won nothing," he said. "I have no feelings towards Feyenoord."

Mourinho: I hope Messi stays at Barcelona forever

    lionelmessi-cropped_3j5uvqz4fz931s3bp3gowhsrh.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho feels there is little chance Lionel Messi will become available in the transfer market and hopes the Argentina international will remain at Barcelona until the end of his career.

Recent reports from Spain suggested Messi is hesitant to renew his contract at Camp Nou - with his current deal due to expire in 2018 - fuelling speculation he could leave Barca.

Manchester City are believed to be keeping a close eye on the 29-year-old's situation, while United could also join the race for his signature, but Mourinho thinks it is unlikely Messi will ever play in the Premier League.

"It is the same story with Messi every season. The papers always claim he is leaving, but it never happens in the end," Mourinho said at a news conference on Wednesday. "Honestly, I hope he never leaves because he belongs to Barcelona and Barcelona belong to him.

"The natural thing and beautiful thing would be for him to stay and finish his career at Barcelona."I think he will be staying at Barcelona, but that is just a personal opinion."For Man United, I am absolutely sure he won't come."

Mourinho also told reporters ahead of his side's Europa League meeting with Feyenoord that United will take up the option of extending Zlatan Ibrahimovic's stay at the club by another year.

Mourinho: I want to stay at Man Utd for more than three years

    jose-mourinho-manchester-united_nt3kwfac1zom1ll6vmdir8ryu.jpg

Jose Mourinho has admitted he would "love" to stay at Manchester United beyond his current three-year contract.

Mourinho agreed a deal with the Red Devils in May which expires in 2019 and, despite enduring an indifferent start to life as United boss, sees his long-term future at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea boss acknowledged, however, that he must deliver success in order to make that hope a reality.

"Let's go step by step," Mourinho said. "I am in the beginning of my contract and also in the beginning of the process."If you ask me if I want to stay longer than three years? Then I say yes I would love it, but also I have to earn and deserve that.

"If the club feels I deserve to stay then I will be very, very proud. The job is as difficult as I was expecting; when I said I wanted to win the Premier League this year, I said it was risky.

"I still can't believe how we didn't win our last three home games because we played so well, yet we didn't win."Saturday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal left United in sixth position in the Premier League and nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea, whose coach Antonio Conte is also in his first season in charge.

But Mourinho believes United are moving in the right direction and pointed out that even Sir Alex Ferguson had needed time to turn the club around.

"I think by playing well the future can be bright," he added. "The team is happy with the way they're playing, they are happy with direction."With our style of play we are keeping people believing that the good results will come.

"The best manager in Premier League history needed a few years to build a successful period. If the best needed time, then others do too."

Rostov 3-2 Bayern: Russians prevail in five-goal thriller

    rostov-bayern_1kd9n9ndxutif1whec46z1kvi6.jpg

Bayern Munich suffered a shock 3-2 defeat at Rostov as they failed to produce a Champions League win to ease the pain of their Der Klassiker defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

The German champions have picked up just a single point from their last two Bundesliga fixtures, including the 1-0 loss to Dortmund on Saturday, and their failure to win in Russia means Atletico Madrid will secure top spot in Group D with victory over PSV later on Wednesday.Douglas Costa was the biggest thorn in Rostov's side during the first half and eventually put Bayern in front after pouncing on a poor clearance.

But he was left apologising to his team-mates for a loose pass that ultimately led to Rostov's leveller from Sardar Azmoun, before Dmitri Poloz turned the game on its head from the penalty spot following a clumsy Jerome Boateng challenge early in the second half.

Juan Bernat delivered Bayern's quick reply but Christian Noboa curled home a wonderful free-kick to seal a famous first Champions League win for Rostov, who lost the reverse fixture 5-0 on matchday one, in stunning fashion.

Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and defender Holger Badstuber were offered a rare first-team chance by Bayern head coach Carlo Ancelotti, but they showed an alarming lack of familiarity when dealing with a ball over the top after 10 minutes.

Aleksandr Erokhin capitalised on a mix-up between the pair to head goalwards beyond the on-rushing Ulreich, with Bernat reacting quickly to intercept and clear the danger.

Despite dominating possession at Olimp-2, Bayern's attacking threat was limited early on aside from a tame Costa effort that curled into the grateful clutches of Soslan Dzhanaev.

Dzhanaev again denied Costa when the Brazilian saw a header turned around the post, before Renato Sanches drew a diving save from the goalkeeper as Bayern turned the screw.

Badstuber was perhaps lucky to come away with a free-kick when he went to ground as the last defender under pressure from Azmoun, but Costa continued to look most likely to open the scoring, fizzing an effort narrowly over the crossbar just after the half-hour mark.

And it was the former Shakhtar Donetsk winger - perhaps more suited to the conditions playing 200 kilometres from the Donbass Arena on the other side of the Russia-Ukraine border - who did eventually break the deadlock.

Sanches' effort from a tight angle was blocked by Dzhanaev but poorly cleared by Cesar Navas, allowing Costa to run onto the ball and guide it into the back of the net via a deflection.

But Costa was largely to blame when Rostov pulled level a minute before the break - his backpass caught Boateng off guard, allowing Poloz to steal in and tee up Azmoun to round the Bayern centre-back for a tidy finish past Ulreich.

The second half started with Philipp Lahm heading just wide of the target, but more clumsy defending by the visitors opened the door for Rostov to take the lead, as Boateng brought down Noboa after a stumble in the box.

The cold air exposed Poloz's heavy breathing ahead of a huge penalty, but the attacker kept his cool to find the bottom-right corner.Bayern's response was immediate, with Bernat latching onto a Franck Ribery throughball to smash home from close range.

Noboa then curled home a free-kick from 20 yards to put Rostov on the brink of a famous win, but referee Artur Soares Dias had hearts in mouths when he pointed to the spot late on following a coming together in the box.

The Portuguese swiftly changed his mind to give offside against Bayern, and Dzhanaev kept out Thiago Alcantara in the closing stages to ensure a first Champions League win for any Russian club over the Bavarian giants.

Besiktas 3-3 Benfica: Aboubakar caps stunning late fightback to earn precious point

    aboubakar_1ynoe2m0z3xjz22ga9marry1.jpg

A stunning second-half resurgence from Besiktas saw them recover from three goals down to earn a 3-3 draw that prevented Benfica from qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages and boosted their own hopes of progressing.
Goals from Goncalo Guedes, Nelson Semedo and Ljubomir Fejsa inside the opening 31 minutes looked like sending the Portuguese champions on their way into the last 16.

However, Cenk Tosun, Ricardo Quaresma and Vincent Aboubakar struck after the restart – the latter netting with one minute remaining – to claim a point in what was a memorable comeback in Istanbul.

Benfica headed into the crunch clash at the Besiktas Arena well aware that three points would be enough to qualify from Group B, but the draw means that the sides occupy the top two spots in the pool, potentially temporarily as they await the result of Napoli's game with Dynamo Kiev later on Wednesday.

The first warning sign of what was to come for Besiktas in a torrid first half arrived with less than three minutes gone when Eliseu found space to shoot on the edge of the box and his effort hit the outside of the post.

The hosts thought they had taken the lead two minutes later, as Aboubakar tapped home a rebound only to see the assistant referee cut his celebrations short with an offside flag.

It was Benfica, though, who broke the deadlock after 10 minutes. Guedes was calm under pressure after being put through on goal by Eduardo Salvio and he rounded goalkeeper Fabricio Ramirez before slotting in from close range.

Semedo compounded Besiktas' misery by adding a second 15 minutes later when he produced a stunning strike from distance, unleashing a dipping shot that struck the crossbar and landed in.

And it was 3-0 just after the half-hour mark, with Fejsa finally converting after Benfica had hit the woodwork three times in as many seconds. First, Kostas Mitroglou was denied by the bar with a pair of headers, then Salvio nodded against the post before Fejsa eventually tapped home to leave the hosts shell-shocked.Salvio saw a low shot well saved early in the second half before he slid in Mitroglou, who slotted wide despite being clean through on goal.

Senol Gunes' team were given a glimmer of hope thanks to a wonderful 58th-minute strike from Tosun, who produced an acrobatic volley into the far corner from Andreas Beck's cross.

Victor Lindelof gifted the hosts a second seven minutes later when he handled inside the box and Quaresma converted the resulting spot-kick off the right-hand post to set up a grandstand finish that ended with Aboubakar hauling the sides level.

It was heartbreak for Benfica as Aboubakar, on loan from their rivals Porto, scrambled home from close range to complete the comeback.

Arsenal 2-2 Paris Saint-Germain: Lucas pegs back Gunners thanks to unfortunate Iwobi

    arsenal-psg_1pvj9svbe6bp412ab2mx7zag7n.jpg

Lucas Moura kept Paris Saint-Germain's chances of finishing top of Champions League Group A alive as his header salvaged a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

An Olivier Giroud penalty and an own goal from Marco Verratti had helped Arsenal overturn Edinson Cavani's deserved opener for PSG and they appeared on course to clinch top spot.

However, Brazil winger Lucas - who had struck the bar with a wonderfully-struck free-kick earlier in the second-half - levelled proceedings with 13 minutes remaining.

A point was the least Unai Emery's men deserved and Cavani had two gilt-edged opportunities to seal a memorable victory - and top-spot - in the closing stages, but the Uruguayan failed to find the target as both sides had to settle for a point.

PSG consequently go top of the pool due to a superior head-to-head record over Arsene Wenger's men having scored more away goals in the two contests between the teams. However, with the sides locked on 11 points apiece the fight for top spot in Group A goes to matchday six.

The visitors made a bright start despite being shorn of several first-team regulars including Angel Di Maria and Serge Aurier - who was forbidden to travel to the UK.

It was Aurier's replacement Thomas Meunier's cross that provided Cavani, who netted after 42 seconds in the reverse fixture, with the chance to open the scoring but he just failed to connect.Kieran Gibbs then cleared off the line after Thiago Silva deflected Cavani's miscued header goalwards.

PSG had the lead after 18 minutes, though, as Cavani slid in to bundle home Blaise Matuidi's cross from point-blank range.Arsenal finally awoke from their slumber and Silva made a great last-ditch challenge to deny Aaron Ramsey. And the Gunners were gifted a way back into the match just before half-time when Grzegorz Krychowiak scythed down Alexis Sanchez in the area.

Giroud assumed responsibility and sent Alphonse Areola the wrong way with Arsenal's first attempt on goal. That goal revitalised Arsenal and the hosts came out strong after the restart, but it was PSG who almost retook the lead.

Lucas earned a free-kick after capitalising on Laurent Koscielny's slack play and from the resulting free-kick he rattled the woodwork with a venomous strike.
Arsenal upped the tempo, though, and Giroud would have had his second if not for Marquinhos' crucial intervention.

But they did move in front in fortunate circumstances on the hour. Ramsey's strike rebounded onto the shins of Verratti and into the back of the net as the midfielder became the first PSG player to score a Champions League own goal.

However, Arsenal could not hold onto their lead and were punished for more sloppy defending when the unmarked Lucas headed in from Hatem Ben Arfa's corner.

Cavani should have wrapped up the victory in the final 10 minutes, but the former Napoli striker could only direct a tame chip at David Ospina before he directed a close-range header wide from PSG's next attack as the spoils were shared.

Borussia Monchengladbach 1-1 Manchester City: Pep's men through to knockouts after draw

    monchengladbach-manchester-city_1lz3d7fdbds751vm3eokbbiz9a.jpg

Manchester City secured their passage to the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday with a 1-1 draw at Borussia Monchengladbach in a game where both teams were reduced to 10 men.

Not for the first time this season, City boss Pep Guardiola reverted to a 3-2-4-1 formation designed to take control of central areas, but it did not have the desired effect initially as Gladbach - without a win in the Bundesliga since September - took a deserved 23rd-minute lead through Raffael.

Ilkay Gundogan and Sergio Aguero came close to levelling for the Premier League side before captain Silva pounced from close range on the stroke of half-time, ultimately sealing the point that prolongs his team's interest in the competition.

This draw and Celtic's loss to Barcelona at Parkhead means Gladbach are guaranteed a Europa League spot in third and City cannot overhaul the LaLiga champions as group winners.

Matchweek six's dead rubbers therefore come in handy for Lars Stindl and Fernandinho, who were each dismissed after the break for two bookable offences by the occasionally over-zealous Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir.

Raffael and Fabian Johnson combined for the USA international to test Claudio Bravo in the seventh minute and Andre Schubert's team were increasingly encouraged by a disjointed City showing before taking the lead midway through the first half.

Stindl outmuscled John Stones to find space down the left and his low cross was deflected into Raffael's path off Aleksandar Kolarov for the Brazilian to finish emphatically.

Former Borussia Dortmund star Gundogan almost pulled City level on his return to Germany, controlling a Kevin De Bruyne corner on the edge of the area to spear a shot towards the bottom-left corner that drew a superb save from Yann Sommer.
Bravo spared his own blushes by denying Oscar Wendt after a dreadful throw out allowed the Gladbach man to bustle through a disorganised backline.

A pleasing half for Schubert turned sour towards its conclusion when Ibrahima Traore limped off with an apparent groin strain and City belatedly sprung into life to equalise.Sommer thwarted Aguero from a Sterling cutback before De Bruyne found joy down the same right channel and Silva prodded home.

The start to the second period was similarly eventful as Sterling had a goal ruled out for offside and, from Sommer's resulting punt downfield, Stindl struck Nicolas Otamendi in the face to earn his marching orders.

City's numerical advantage lasted only 12 minutes as Fernandinho, who had walked a disciplinary tightrope all evening, also drew a second booking from Cakir for a slight tug on Tobias Strobl's shirt.

The home support found their voice again, although they were relieved to see Sommer had not misplaced his reactions when he pushed a De Bruyne drive behind at full stretch.

Gladbach failed to press convincingly for the win they needed as Otamendi powered a header wide, although the sight of Aguero limping during stoppage time could be a concern for Guardiola ahead of Saturday's Premier League trip to Burnley.

Atletico Madrid 2-0 PSV: Gameiro and Griezmann goals seal top spot

    kevin-gameiro-atletico-madrid-psv-champions-league_1fwatifaly21n1k00a25b4qmir.jpg

Atletico Madrid took full advantage of Bayern Munich's shock Champions League defeat to Rostov and secured their passage as Group D winners thanks to a 2-0 home win over PSV.

It was by no means a vintage display from an Atletico side clearly short of confidence following Saturday's 3-0 humbling by bitter rivals Real Madrid, but they managed to bounce back thanks to their formidable French frontline of Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro.

Atletico began brightly and crafted a couple of strong chances early on, but PSV quickly got to grips with the hosts and their sturdiness at the back gave them a good platform to build on.

PSV started to look the better team after half-time, though Atletico's trademark ruthless streak shone through and Gameiro produced a clinical finish in the 55th minute to capitalise on the visitors' lack of cutting edge.

Atletico effectively ended the chances of a second surprise result of the day in Group D after Bayern slipped up as Griezmann coolly added a second with 24 minutes to go, putting him level with Luis Aragones as the club's top scorer in the Champions League and European Cup with 12 goals.

The result confirms Atletico's progression as group winners with a match still to play, while PSV will need to beat Rostov in their final outing to keep their European campaign going in the Europa League.Atletico looked every inch a side desperate to prove a point during the early stages and they went close twice inside the first 10 minutes.

Gameiro was the first to trouble PSV, as he met Yannick Carrasco's teasing right-wing cross and sliced wide from close range, before Griezmann drilled agonisingly past the right-hand post from 18 yards out.

PSV did get some defensive respite in the form of a swift counter-attack 19 minutes in, but Griezmann tracked back brilliantly to put Steven Bergwijn under pressure and Jan Oblak ultimately denied the Dutch forward.

The home side struggled to regain their superiority for the rest of the half, though, and PSV gradually became a more prominent force in the final third without truly threatening.

PSV initially looked the more purposeful side after the break, but their inability to craft chances was ultimately punished.Griezmann prodded a clever pass into the right side of the area for Gameiro and the striker drilled a low shot across Jeroen Zoet and into the bottom-far corner.

Zoet was beaten again just after the hour mark, as Griezmann latched on to Tiago's perfectly weighted through ball and fired low to the goalkeeper's right.
The hosts proceeded to sit back and invite PSV on to them in the final 15 minutes, but the away side failed to cause them any significant bother and Atletico cruised across the line to book their place in the last 16.

Celtic 0-2 Barcelona: Messi double sends Barca into last 16

    leo-messi-celtic-barcelona-champions-league_df1jfmqok8mb10h49508mapgd.jpg

Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona won 2-0 at Celtic to seal qualification for the Champions League last 16 as Group C winners. Barca's victory in Glasgow – coupled with Manchester City's draw against Borussia Monchengladbach – means they cannot be caught with a game still to play.

The visitors made five changes after their poor draw against Malaga last time out, with Messi returning from illness and strike partner Luis Suarez back following suspension.

And those alterations from Luis Enrique were rewarded, with Messi opening the scoring with a volley midway through the first half and sealing victory with a second-half penalty after Suarez had been fouled by Emilio Izaguirre.

It was a much-needed result for Barca, who romped the reverse fixture 7-0 at Camp Nou but had only secured wins in two of their previous five games in all competitions.

Celtic were more competitive this time around, but are now guaranteed to finish bottom and their European hopes are over for 2016-17. They sit three points adrift of Gladbach and have a worse head-to-head record.

Messi, who now has nine goals in this season's competition, fired an early effort wide and came close to turning in Ivan Rakitic's bouncing header, but the Argentina international was not to be denied after 24 minutes.

Neymar picked out Messi with a clever chip from the left-hand channel and he took the pass in his stride to send a first-time volley past Craig Gordon at his near post, the visitors' 400th goal in all competitions under the management of Luis Enrique.Celtic responded positively, with Moussa Dembele's powerful shot forcing Marc-Andre ter Stegen into action.

However, the hosts needed Gordon to ensure they went into the break with only a one-goal deficit, the goalkeeper making a magnificent one-handed save to keep out Suarez's header after Messi stood up a cross.

Celtic started the second half strongly as Callum McGregor's shot was pushed away by Ter Stegen, before Brendan Rodgers' men missed a golden chance to equalise.

Dembele was in prime position to score when he sent a weak header straight at Ter Stegen from six yards after a cross from James Forrest, who had replaced Scott Sinclair at the break.

That miss proved costly with Barca doubling their lead in the 55th minute. Sergi Roberto's throughball led to Suarez being brought down by Izaguirre in the penalty area and Messi stepped up to send the spot-kick straight down the middle.

Messi scored a hat-trick in the Camp Nou meeting and could have repeated the trick here, only to drag a right-footed shot wide in a presentable chance after Neymar's pass.An angry Neymar went head-to-head with Mikael Lustig after a challenge late in the game, with both players booked for the exchange.

That means he is out of Barca's last group game against Gladbach through
suspension, but Wednesday's results mean there is little meaning to that fixture.
The match had become more straightforward for Barca as Celtic ran out of steam late on and Suarez almost put the icing on the cake when his shot hit the post from close-range after Messi had impressively created the opportunity.

Messi reaches 100 Barcelona goals in international competitions

    messi-and-neymar-cropped_1pguubrgtt6p71g9yu0icxnc5u.jpg

Lionel Messi moved on to 100 goals for Barcelona in international competitions with his double against Celtic in the Champions League.

Messi scored in the first half with a volley, before sealing a 2-0 victory for Barca with a penalty 10 minutes into the second period. The Argentina international now has 100 goals for the Camp Nou club across the Champions League, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

He has already scored nine in this season's Champions League, four clear of Edinson Cavani who sits second in the scoring charts. The first goal was also Barca's 400th in all competitions under the management of Luis Enrique, while Neymar's assist meant he equalled the best tally in a Champions League season (seven) since 2003-04.

Southgate set to take over England job permanently

    gareth-southgate-england-vs-malta-081016_1s5rn5wvb8sid16px2jtl9pu5u.jpg

Interim England manager Gareth Southgate is set to be named as Sam Allardyce's permanent replacement in the job, according to widespread reports in the UK press. The former Three Lions defender took over at the helm when Allardyce was forced out due to a corruption scandal that broke in September.

England have played four times since the change of manager, winning twice and drawing against Slovenia and Spain on their way to top spot in Group F of World Cup qualifying. One of those wins was a commanding 3-0 reverse of bitter rivals Scotland, a result which undoubtedly did no harm to his prospects of taking on the job full-time.

And that positive early start appears to have sealed Southgate the post on a permanent basis after almost two months as caretaker. The manager was interviewed by a five-man FA panel on Monday, and reports suggest that he impressed during the meeting.

Official confirmation is expected for the coming Monday, with Southgate set to receive a deal that extends up to the end of Euro 2020. The contract, however, is said to contain a clause allowing either party to terminate the link after Russia 2018.

Southgate will reportedly earn £1.5 million a year at the head of the Three Lions, less than his predecessor but a significant jump up from the £500,000 he earned with the Under-21 team.

That role will now fall vacant, with Phil Neville - who revealed on Wednesday that he would not be taking over at Bury - one of the the favourites to step into the breach.

The England job would be Southgate's second foray into senior management, after he began his post-playing career with a three-year spell at Middlesbrough that came to an end in 2009.
