Bale set for long spell on Real Madrid sidelines after ankle surgery

    gareth-bale_1ax2lzrwg56si1knxd5jgis3w7.jpg

Real Madrid have confirmed that Gareth Bale will undergo surgery on his injured ankle next week, with the winger set for up to a three-month spell on the sidelines.

The Wales international sustained the problem in Madrid's 2-1 Champions League win at Sporting CP on Tuesday, limping off shortly before the hour in Lisbon.

Madrid revealed on Wednesday that Bale had suffered "a traumatic dislocation of the peroneal tendons in his right ankle", and would be monitored. And there was a further blow on Thursday as the European champions announced the problem would require surgery.

"The Real Madrid Sanitas Medical Services have decided that Gareth Bale will undergo an operation following the traumatic dislocation of the peroneal tendons of his right ankle," a statement read.

"The operation will take place at King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday 29th November by doctor James Calder, under the supervision of the club doctors Jesus Olmo and Mikel Aramberri."

Early reports suggest Bale could be out for around three to four months, with the winger certain to miss El Clasico against Barcelona on December 3, as well as Madrid's clash with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League four days later - a match which will decide the winners of Group F.

Bale has netted seven goals in 16 appearances across all competitions for Madrid this season, and could even be a doubt for Wales' return to World Cup qualifying action against Republic of Ireland in late March.

Klopp: Liverpool's door always open to Gerrard

    jurgen-klopp-cropped_350prvah69sp1dgerr1lggbf4.jpg

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool can help if Steven Gerrard wants to pursue a career in coaching after announcing his retirement. Gerrard confirmed on Thursday that he is hanging up his boots after opting not to extend his stay at MLS franchise LA Galaxy.

The 36-year-old has already spoken of his interest in management, although he turned down the opportunity to take over at MK Dons in League One, and a position on Klopp's backroom staff would appear an ideal first step into life on the touchline.

Speaking to the media ahead of Liverpool's Premier League match at home to Sunderland on Saturday, Klopp, after initially being reluctant to address the issue at length, was pressed on whether or not we can expect to see Gerrard back in a Reds tracksuit at the Melwood training ground soon.

"One day in the future there will be something to announce, I'm pretty sure," he said."The door is always open. If he wants, I'm sure he will, and if he wants to make whatever career then we want to help him.

"Stop being so excited about his next step. In life you need space to learn something new."He was a young player and now he will be a young whatever. I'm the wrong person to talk about it."

The German, who succeeded Gerrard's final Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers in October 2015, had already claimed he is not worthy of passing judgement on the Champions League and FA Cup winner's contribution to the club."I'm only here 14 months," he said."How can I be the person who says how big this person [Gerrard] is? He's a great person.

"I met Stevie already and he is a great person, and he is far away from wanting to be handled like a legend. He is a normal guy."It's good to hear that he's back in town. On LFC TV you can watch all 186 of his goals."

Mourinho: I tried to sign Valencia for Real Madrid

    iahtj7remg741nop10n96rev4.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he tried to sign Antonio Valencia when he was in charge of Real Madrid but was told “no chance”.

The Ecuadorian has impressed this season for the Red Devils at right-back and Mourinho insists he always felt that would be his best position.

Valencia made his comeback from a broken arm against Arsenal in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Old Trafford and Mourinho says he offers an extra attacking option.

"I tried to sign Antonio a number of years ago, when I was at Madrid," Mourinho told MUTV."Even though he was not playing right-back at the time, I thought he could be phenomenal in that position. As it was, United told me 'no chance!'"

"I am not surprised by his form this season. He has been clean of injuries, save for an operation on his arm which did not keep him out for long, and I have also been able to keep him fresh by resting him in certain Europa League games."I think he is the right-back to give us the maximum we can in terms of our attacking football."

Sparta Prague 1-0 Southampton: Sloppy Saints slip to Europa League defeat

    gl1o1tfpbomi1uz15updeng8e.jpg

Southampton slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Sparta Prague in the Europa League to leave them needing a scoreless draw or a victory in their final group game to progress to the knockout stages.

The Czech side began the game in pole position and the hosts asserted their dominance in the 11th minute, left-back Costa Nhamoinesu converting an excellent Borek Dockal free-kick.

Southampton failed to create a clear-cut chance of note from open play and Claude Puel's men will now have to beat Hapoel Be'er Sheva or secure a goalless draw in their final group game to guarantee their progress into the next round.

Shane Long's late effort was the closest Southampton came to scoring their first away goal in this season's Europa League, with the Premier League team struggling for creativity.

Virgil van Dijk then planted a header over the crossbar as a frustrating match ended in defeat for the Saints, while David Holoubek's men celebrated winning the group after their fourth straight European home victory.

Sparta have an unassailable five-point lead at the top of Group K, two points ahead of Southampton and Hapoel after the Israeli side came from behind to beat 10-man Inter 3-2.

Southampton had the better of the early exchanges, but the hosts took the lead after 10 minutes.

Dockal's cute free-kick was misjudged by the Saints defence and Costa read the flight of the ball perfectly to connect with a low volley that beat Fraser Forster at his near post.

Sam McQueen's low drive and a Long header tested Tomas Koubek as the visitors initially responded well to falling behind, but Sparta's defence restricted the Saints to speculative efforts.

A wild Maya Yoshida shot from well outside the box shortly after half-time summed up Southampton's frustration when faced with Sparta's determined deep-lying defence.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg limped off after 54 minutes to further deepen Saints' problems as Puel introduced Sofiane Boufal and Oriol Romeu in a bid to find a foothold in the game.

Forster pushed away a firm strike from Vyacheslav Karavayev and then had to deal with another dangerous Dockal free-kick that only needed a touch from David Lafata to add a second goal.Lukas Marecek went close with a curling effort after 65 minutes, then Forster denied Dockal after Jordy Clasie gave away the ball on the edge of his own area.

Puel turned to Charlie Austin as his last change, but it was Long who almost found the equaliser after 77 minutes with a shot that bent narrowly wide of the post.
Southampton captain Van Dijk then sent a free header over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy and it proved a key miss as Southampton failed to find an equaliser.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva 3-2 Inter: Nerazzurri crash out of Europa League

    nagatomo-buzaglo-hapoel-beer-sheva-inter-europa-league_1odrs2fxb5ay51n0hhncdwwqdn.jpg

Ten-man Inter crashed out of the Europa League after letting a two-goal lead slip as Hapoel Be'er Sheva roared back in the second half to win 3-2 on Thursday.

Although Inter's 2-2 derby draw against AC Milan in Stefano Pioli's first match as coach on Sunday gave fans reason for optimism, in the end there were few positives to come from their trip to Israel, as the Italian giants' already slim hopes of reaching the knockout phase were vanquished.

Despite finding themselves in the uncomfortable position of partly relying on the outcome of Southampton's trip to Sparta Prague in the other Group K fixture, Inter played with freedom during the first half and were deserving of a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Mauro Icardi and Marcelo Brozovic.

Icardi went close to giving Inter a third when he struck the crossbar just after the break, but Hapoel swiftly capitalised and pulled one back through Lucio Maranhao.

Hapoel then levelled against the odds through Anthony Nwakaeme, with goalkeeper Samir Handanovic receiving his marching orders in the process of conceding the spot-kick.

The home side piled on the pressure and deep into stoppage time, Ben Sahar struck to further confirm Inter's exit and leave Hapoel needing just a score draw in their final game at Southampton to progress.

Inter almost found themselves in real trouble as early as the fourth minute when Maor Buzaglo saw his low right-wing cross deflect off Yuto Nagatomo and on to the bar.

But if anything, that scare jolted Inter into life and they were ahead eight minutes later, as Icardi got ahead of his marker and steered Eder's clever disguised cross in at the near post. The visitors then doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark and in some style.

Eder inspired a lovely one-touch passing move from the left, gradually making his way inside and exchanging possession with Icardi and Ever Banega, before spreading the play to Brozovic and the Croatian slammed a fine left-footed effort in off the far post from 20 yards.

Inter's control continued into the second half and Icardi almost grabbed himself an emphatic second in the 52nd minute, as the Argentinian drove a fierce effort on to the crossbar from just inside the box.

Hapoel took full advantage of that let-off and gave themselves a lifeline just before the hour mark – Maranhao heading Maharan Radi's sweeping cross past Handanovic.

That goal sparked a real upsurge from the hosts and Buzaglo won a penalty 19 minutes from time as Handanovic rushed out to tackle the striker and wildly caught him in the face with a flailing foot, earning himself a second yellow card in the process.Nwakaeme dispatched the resulting spot-kick past substitute goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo.

Hapoel poured men forward towards the end and their persistence paid off in stoppage time, as Mohammad Ghadir brilliantly back-heeled a pass across the edge of the box and substitute Sahar coolly beat Carrizo to leave the delirious home fans dreaming of a place in the last 32.

'You're like a brother to me' - Suarez's impassioned message to retiring Gerrard

    steven-gerrard-luis-suarez-2014_hzaeu2y674rv170bgod02bd96.jpg

Luis Suarez has paid tribute to Steven Gerrard after the former Liverpool captain announced his retirement from football.

The pair played together to great success at Liverpool, narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in 2013-14, with Suarez ending that season as PFA Player of the Year after scoring 31 goals.

However, Suarez endured plenty of controversy during his time at Anfield, after being banned for racially abusing Patrice Evra and later for biting Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez subsequently moved to Barcelona, after further biting controversy at World Cup 2014, but has thanked his former team-mate for all the help and advice he has given him throughout his career.

"To a captain. To a team mate. To a friend," he wrote on Twitter."I got to Liverpool, a historic club, coming from another historic club. And amongst my team mates, Steven Gerrard. A model at the club, in the Premier League and outside the Championship as well. He shrunk the field on defence, was a great shooter and a great goalscorer and was a very skilled passer. A unique player indeed.

"As weeks went by Steven showed himself as a true leader. He was a natural winner and an ambitious player on the field and a good and consistent team mate off the field. He was always of great support and taught me lots of valuable things while pulling the best from me.

"Thank you very much Steven. For being by my side during my career's tougher times. For supporting me no matter what and gifting me advice so many times. Our relationship goes beyond the football field. You were always with me even when some others were not. So many chats, so many times you helped me reconsider situations, and always in order to reach me...Like an older brother teaches his youngest one.

"We went through so much together and fought for big things to come for our club. This will be imprinted forever in my memories."

:cool:Rooney becomes Manchester United's all-time top scorer in Europe

    19ntchn8tm1m71bmqxnipxx1fo.jpg

Wayne Rooney has overtaken Ruud van Nistelrooy to become Manchester United's top goalscorer in European competition with 39 goals from 96 appearances.

The captain opened the scoring against Feyenoord in the Europa League at Old Trafford with a neat flick over goalkeeper Brad Jones after good work from Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Van Nistelrooy had previously held the record with 38 goals from 47 games ahead of Ryan Giggs on 29 goals from 158 games and Denis Law with 28 from 33.

Rooney's first European goals came back in 2004 with a memorable hat-trick against Fenerbahce in the Champions League.

The striker's goal is also his 248th goal for Manchester United, leaving him just one short of the all-time club record held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Messi: Barcelona are not dependent on me

    lionel-messi_70pjo4xwt5wu1iieapti7v2jc.jpg

Lionel Messi insists Barcelona are not dependent on him, despite producing more match-winning goal heroics with a brace in the 2-0 Champions League victory at Celtic on Wednesday.Messi opened the scoring by converting Neymar's chipped pass then slotted in from the penalty spot to wrap up the win and secure top spot in Group C.

The striker's double took his tally for the season to 18 goals in all competitions for Barcelona, but he played down his importance to Luis Enrique's team.

"I don't consider talk of Barca being Messi-dependent to be praise or a concern, because it's not the case," Messi said at an Adidas promotional event on Thursday.
"I'm in the best team in the world, [Barca] don't depend on one player."

Messi did not take questions about his future, amid speculation he is set to sign a new Barcelona contract, but he accepted his side's next LaLiga match, at Real Sociedad on Sunday, where they have not won since 2007, will be tough.

"Anoeta is a complicated stadium where we haven't won in years," he said."[Sociedad] always make things tough for us there and it's going to be a hard game.

"In football these days it's important to be organised. To have a team that is well-organised is the most important thing. To have a good team, everything starts there."

Barcelona are four points adrift of leaders Real Madrid heading into this weekend.

:love:Manchester United 4-0 Feyenoord: Red Devils back on track with dominant win

    19ntchn8tm1m71bmqxnipxx1fo.jpg

Wayne Rooney became Manchester United's record European goalscorer in his side's impressive 4-0 Europa League win over Feyenoord at Old Trafford.

Rooney linked up with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to score his 39th continental goal for United late in the first half, moving him past the mark he previously shared with Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The strike also moved him to within just one of Bobby Charlton's overall club goalscoring record, a welcome boost after he was criticised following the emergence of images appearing to show him drunk while on international duty with England.

Rooney then played his part in an excellent team goal after the break, setting up Juan Mata to score shortly before Brad Jones' own goal and a Jesse Lingard effort in stoppage time sealed a convincing win as United cruised home without being troubled by Feyenoord, who had beaten them earlier in the campaign.

A third home victory in Group A leaves Jose Mourinho's side needing a point to be certain of qualifying for the last 32 going into the final round of group matches, when they will play Zorya Luhansk.

United now sit a point behind group leaders Fenerbahce and crucially two clear of Feyenoord – with those two teams facing each other in the last set of fixtures.
The Dutch side know they have to beat Fener if they are to stand any chance of progressing.

United made six changes to their team, but still fielded a strong line-up, with Ibrahimovic back from suspension, captain Rooney returning to the first XI and Henrikh Mkhitaryan handed only his second start for the club.

Paul Pogba forced Jones to tip his long-range shot over the crossbar in the first chance of note, with Michael Carrick's effort from the resulting corner only just dealt with by a combination of the goalkeeper and captain Dirk Kuyt.

Feyenoord made a strong response, with United keeper Sergio Romero – in for David de Gea – saving from Rick Karsdorp and then making an impressive but unorthodox stop with his leg from Kuyt's follow-up after the home defence had failed to clear the danger. But it was United who made the breakthrough after 35 minutes, with Rooney making club history.

Rooney started move himself down the left and found Ibrahimovic before collecting the return pass and dinking a clever finish over Jones from close-range as the assistant referee's flag stayed down despite the visitors' appeals for offside.

Mkhitaryan almost made his mark with an excellent solo run, but was denied a free-kick and potential red card for Jens Toornstra after going down under his challenge just outside the box.

Mata's impressive 20-yard chip was kept out by a back-pedalling Jones, while Mkhitaryan lashed an effort against the side-netting after linking up with Ibrahimovic as United looked by far the stronger side after the break.A second was coming and it duly arrived with an impressive team goal 21 minutes from time.

After Carrick dispossessed Tonny Vilhena, Ibrahimovic slipped a pass through to Rooney, who in turn showed great vision to set up Mata to do the rest with a simple finish.

Jones saved from Ibrahimovic in a one-on-one, but the former Liverpool shot stopper was not so fortunate after 75 minutes, with substitute Marcus Rashford finding the Swede, whose attempted cross bounced in off the keeper's legs.

Rooney was substituted to warm applause in the closing stages after a starring performance, with United on easy street as Feyenoord failed to trouble Romero in the second half.

And late substitute Lingard put the icing on the cake in the 92nd minute, collecting Antonio Valencia's pass and curling a left-footed shot beyond Jones from outside the area, leaving Mourinho highly satisfied.

Schweinsteiger offered $16.5m Man Utd escape route by Chicago Fire

    bastian-schweinsteiger-manchester-united-premier-league-20032016_q1fk1yk8wz3x1m98zqoygmihb.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger has been offered an escape route out of Manchester United by Chicago Fire.

Goal understands that the MLS side have offered the midfielder a three-year deal worth $5.5 million per year.Veljko Paunovic’s side have endured a disappointing MLS campaign, finishing bottom of the Eastern Conference, but they remain hopeful of persuading the former Germany international to make the move.

Paunovic met with Schweinsteiger earlier this month in Manchester and is optimistic he can land the 32-year-old in time for the start of pre-season training.

Schweinsteiger was signed for Manchester United by Louis van Gaal on a free transfer from Bayern Munich but failed to make much of an impact under the
Dutch coach and his season was ended prematurely by injury.

However, he did manage to recover in time to feature at Euro 2016 for Germany, scoring in the win against Ukraine before retiring from international football after the tournament.

Schweinsteiger was subsequently completely frozen out at Old Trafford following the arrival of Jose Mourinho and has not made an appearance for the Red Devils all season after being deemed surplus to requirements by the Portuguese.

Despite being banished from first-team training the 32-year-old has frequently insisted he is ready for action if Mourinho were to call upon his services and that he is hopeful of being given a chance in the first team. There does appear to have been a slight softening towards Schweinsteiger recently by Mourinho with the midfielder having been welcomed back to first-team training in October.

The Portuguese insisted it was a “human” decision to recall the midfielder while Schweinsteiger admitted it “felt great” to be back amongst the first-team and has insisted he will give his all in training in a bid to convince Mourinho of his worth.

However, despite his training return Mourinho appears no closer to selecting Schweinsteiger who is widely expected to leave the club when a suitable offer arrives.

Mkhitaryan hopes for new start at Manchester United

    henrikh-mkhitaryan-manchester-united-2016_le2dfwd8yk7e1ovzbw3yn9ylp.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan is hoping to be given a new start at Manchester United after playing a key role in their 4-0 Europa League win over Feyenoord at Old Trafford.

Mkhitaryan was named in the starting XI for only the second time since his July arrival from Borussia Dortmund and gave a performance that featured six shots and three chances created as United took a huge step towards the knockout stages. The Armenia international has been out of favour under manager Jose Mourinho but believes his lively showing on Thursday could act as a fresh beginning.

"It was a pleasure to play again and start the game," Mkhitaryan told BT Sport."I try to do my best and it's a very good result."It has been difficult to watch the team from the sidelines but you have to have passion and work hard."I hope it is a new start for me."

Phil Jones made his third successive appearance for United and the centre-back explained how the team's pressing game was key to their impressive victory."It was a tough game, especially in the first half," Jones told MUTV. "They pressed us well and created a good chance that they could have scored from.

"But I think we played better in the second half, we were more aggressive in our pressing and we got the four goals. It was a good performance in the end.

"I think it was just a matter of time and not allowing them to play out from the back."Once we did that, you saw in the second half in the chances we created we caused them all sorts of problems."

Rooney record 'an amazing achievement', beams Mourinho

    1twn48o809bya11e8jx7n41b6n.jpg

Jose Mourinho has described Wayne Rooney's European goalscoring record for Manchester United as "amazing" as well as giving rare praise to Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

United thumped Feyenoord 4-0 in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday, with captain Rooney shining by scoring one goal and setting up another for Juan Mata. His strike in the first half saw him move past Ruud van Nistelrooy to become the club's highest continental goalscorer on 39.

Mourinho was thrilled with Rooney's showing and hailed his team for pushing on to score three times after the break, ensuring they now only need a draw in their last Group A match against Zorya Luhansk in order to reach the knockout stages."It's an amazing achievement obviously," Mourinho said of Rooney at his post-match media conference.

"His performance was like the team performance. We showed direction even at 1-0 up, we want to score more goals and get into a position where we are ahead of them in a situation where there are two or three teams on the same points.

"It will be even better if he can help the club to win the one trophy they don't have in their history which is the Europa League."I know it's not the biggest competition, but let's push. Let's qualify, I know there are a lot of knockout games, but let's try."

Mkhitaryan will also be boosted after receiving a positive review of his performance from Mourinho, who handed him only a second start since his July move from Borussia Dortmund and has previously criticised his displays.Mourinho said: "I am very happy. We coped very well with the pressure on our shoulders - it was a good solid performance.

"Some players had chances, like Sergio Romero who made a double save at 0-0 and Mkhitaryan who put in a good individual performance."I think now Mkhitaryan just has to replicate this kind of performance in the Premier League.

"The Premier League is a level higher and he needs to replicate that in the Premier League with more physicality, with more pressure."But the quality we knew - that was why we brought him to the club. He has great quality."Mourinho feels Jesse Lingard's impressive late goal would receive more recognition if there was another manager involved.

He added: "The goal was amazing. If it is another team scoring that goal with another manager on the touchline people would say that it's magic. But not Man United and not a Mourinho team.""

James should start the next game. If he doesn't that means his time at real is almost over. Sad to see him like that but almost all of over subsitutes have been performing really well. I hope he gets the chance he deserves.

But of course we've got too many world class midfielders who should not feature on the bench.
James should at least go out on loan to get more game time.

Manchester United have 'negative feelings', admits Mourinho

    josemourinho-cropped_tend1a8z36i61tz3n5wino08s.jpg

Jose Mourinho wants Manchester United to be more clinical in front of goal in order to kick-start their Premier League campaign this season.

United cruised to an impressive 4-0 Europa League win over Feyenoord on Thursday, with under-fire captain Wayne Rooney, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all on target to take them to the brink of the knockout phase.

But Mourinho's men are sixth in England's top flight, nine points behind leaders Chelsea, having suffered a frustrating run of home draws against Stoke City, Burnley and Arsenal.

"You have immediately negative feelings because we play so well and don't score goals and don't win matches. So what we need in the Premier League is exactly that, a match where you score goals," he said."People like Zlatan [Ibrahimovic], like Rooney, whose happiness depends on the goals they score, they need that."

"Against Stoke the goalkeeper won the man of the match, against Burnley the goalkeeper won the man of the match, against Arsenal Petr [Cech] was not the man of the match, but was not far from that.

"We need to put the ball in the net. We scored four, but we missed three or four chances. So I think it's just that because that has also to be with confidence levels."We were winning 1-0 and were missing chances, we lost the ball in midfield and they got a direct free-kick 18 metres from the goal and I thought '1-1'."

Henrikh Mkhitaryan shone in a starting berth against Feyenoord, having been largely excluded from Mourinho's plans since a close-season switch from Borussia Dortmund, although the United boss was forced to field questions over Anthony Martial's omission from the squad.

"He was okay for this game, it was just an option [not to pick him]," Mourinho added. "He played last Sunday, I cannot play with 12 players, I cannot use 19 or 20 on the bench."You wanted to see Mkhitaryan, I wanted to see him too. I cannot play all of them at the same time so it was just an option.

"Players have to win their positions. They are friends, they are colleagues, they work together every day, but at the end they compete between themselves to have more chances to play."Anthony played against Arsenal; this was the moment to give a chance to Mkhitaryan to start."

United travel to London Stadium to face West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Liverpool and Man Utd target Van Dijk will be snapped up soon - Keown

Virgil van Dijk is starting to generate plenty of transfer talk ahead of the January window, and former Arsenal defender Martin Keown expects him to be "snapped up soon".

Having impressed for Southampton since being lured away from Celtic in September 2015, the Netherlands international is a wanted man.

Manchester United and Liverpool are both said to be keeping a close eye on his situation at St Mary’s, with Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp in the market for defensive additions.

Keown believes Van Dijk could well be on the move in the near future, with the 25-year-old having shown himself to be deserving of a grand stage. He wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Virgil van Dijk has impressed me recently.

“I liked to play with a big central defender. I was good in the air but not the biggest, so I liked having the comfort of a mobile but big player alongside me such as Sol Campbell. “I like the look of Van Dijk - I'm sure he'll be snapped up soon.”

Keown was discussing his pick of the Premier League’s top defenders, and also singled out one of those on the books at Emirates Stadium for praise, admitting that he would have welcomed the opportunity to compete alongside such a classy operator.

He added: “If I could roll back the years it would mean a lot to have played with Laurent Koscielny. “I would have really enjoyed playing with him - he's a thoroughbred. He plays on the left, I played on the right, so let's do it!”

Van Dijk and Koscielny have been mainstays in their respective sides this season, both in domestic and European competition.

The latter is said to be close to agreeing an extension to his contract that he will keep him in north London for the foreseeable future, while the former committed to fresh terms at the end of last season and is tied to the Saints until 2022.

Barcelona to make January swoop for Ivanovic

Barcelona are ready to make a January move for Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, Goal can confirm.

The Serbia veteran has struggled for game time of late as Blues boss Antonio Conte has favoured a 3-4-3 formation with Victor Moses patrolling the right flank. Indeed, since the 3-0 loss to Arsenal on September 24, he has managed only four minutes of Premier League football, with his side winning all six matches in his absence and not conceding a single goal.

Meanwhile, Barca are short on that side of their defence, with Sergi Roberto filling in as something of a stop gap as Luis Enrique remains unconvinced about the qualities of Aleix Vidal.

As a result, the Catalan side are on the look-out for an addition to their squad in the winter transfer window and the 32-year-old would fit the bill perfectly. Not only does he possess experience at the top level, he would also be eligible to play in the Champions League due to Chelsea’s absence from Europe this season.

The Camp Nou outfit are seeking a player to arrive cheaply or on a free transfer in January. Ivanovic’s deal at Stamford Bridge is up at the end of the season and from the beginning of 2017 he is free to negotiate terms on a Bosman move for the summer. This means he will command only a minimal transfer fee, like Barca’s other options, Juventus’ Stephan Lichtsteiner and Darijo Srna of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Even if Barca succeed in the capture of an experienced player in January, they will look to bolster the same area in the summer by adding another player in that position to their roster. Ivanovic, meanwhile, has been at Chelsea since 2008, when he was signed for a fee of €13 million from Russian side Lokomotiv Moscow. In the subsequent period, he has turned out over 350 times for the Stamford Bridge outfit, winning most notably two Premier League titles as well as the European Cup in 2011-12. He is open to a new deal, and the possibility is not so distant given that it was late January 2016 before he was previously handed a one-year extension.
