Portugal 3 Spain 3: Brilliant Ronaldo hat-trick earns thrilling draw

    4D486ABE00000578-5849307-image-a-204_1529093214768.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's stunning hat-trick earned Portugal a dramatic 3-3 draw in their Group B opener against Iberian neighbours Spain.Spain led with three minutes to go after Nacho Fernandez hit a wonderful 25-yard drive but Ronaldo was determined to steal the headlines for himself. And he ended the day with a World Cup match-ball after hitting an outrageous late free-kick to ensure the spoils were shared in this blockbuster clash in Sochi.

Captain Ronaldo had given Portugal a fourth-minute lead from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Madrid team-mate Nacho, restoring the lead thanks to David de Gea's horrible mistake.Diego Costa replied twice to get the 2010 champions level, with Nacho's beautiful goal having seemingly settled a high-class encounter at the Fisht Stadium.

Ronaldo, though, had other ideas and stepped up to beat De Gea again with a perfect 20-yard free-kick, almost snatching all three points with a stoppage-time header.

Friday's earlier games were both settled by late winners but Ronaldo was immediately in the thick of the action, tumbling under a rash challenge from Nacho, who was deputising for Dani Carvajal, another Real Madrid team-mate.

Although De Gea attempted to distract Ronaldo before the former Manchester United man took the spot-kick, he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make yet more history, becoming the first player to score in eight consecutive international tournaments.

David Silva smashed a shot over the crossbar as Spain - who sacked coach Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the tournament and replaced him with Fernando Hierro - tried to find an immediate response, the Manchester City midfielder then having an effort deflected wide after magical footwork from Andres Iniesta.

An increasingly dominant Spain did draw level in the 24th minute, though, with a goal that survived a VAR review.Costa bullied Pepe in the air, then twisted and turned away from two Portugal defenders to rifle home his seventh goal in 11 international appearances.

Technology was soon called into action again when Isco's rocket thumped against the crossbar, but replays showed the ball bounced on the line before Portugal smuggled it away.

De Gea made a terrible error in a warm-up friendly against Switzerland and he was guilty again with a horrible moment that handed Portugal back the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Portugal had not recorded a shot on target since Ronaldo's opener but, when the forward collected possession on the edge of the area and drilled a low left-footed drive at De Gea, the goalkeeper somehow allowed the ball to slip through his grasp.

Spain did not allow that mistake to distract them, though, Costa levelling the scores in the 55th minute.Silva's free-kick to the back post was headed back across goal by Sergio Busquets, with Costa timing his run into the box to nudge home.Within three minutes Spain were in front for the first time, thanks to Nacho's spectacular 25-yard goal.

A Portugal clearance rebounded kindly to the Madrid defender, who hit a first-time drive that curled beautifully out of Rui Patricio's reach, via a double bounce off the woodwork.

Substitute Ricardo Quaresma fired a warning shot over the crossbar but there was only one man who was going to step up for Portugal.Ronaldo was fouled on the edge of the penalty area and he could hardly have placed the ball in a more ideal position for one of his special set-pieces, despite having failed to score with 44 previous free-kick efforts in World Cups and European Championships.

With the Sochi crowd on the edge of their seats, Ronaldo delivered with a trademark curler that bent over and away from the wall to settle a contest that will go down in history as a World Cup classic.

Ronaldo delighted with 'personal best' hat-trick after pegging back Spain

Portugal's hero Cristiano Ronaldo saluted his hat-trick as a "personal best" and insisted that his team deserved a point against Spain after holding La Roja to a thrilling 3-3 draw on Friday.Despite an outstanding individual performance from the Real Madrid striker, Portugal were on the back foot for much of the World Cup clash as they managed just three shots on goal.Ronaldo opened the scoring from the penalty spot and then hit again when David de Gea spilled a speculative long-range effort in the first half.

Two goals from Diego Costa after each Ronaldo effort kept Spain in touch before a cracking strike from Nacho handed Fernando Hierro's men the lead.

But Cristiano was on target again late on to rescue the equaliser with a brilliant free-kick - and he believes it is no less than his team deserves. "I always believed in myself, I work for this," he fired to RTP after the final whistle. "I want to highlight the team's response, we played until the end, we did not shy away from the fight. The draw was fair."

He later told reporters of his hat-trick: "I'm very happy. It's a personal best. It's a great moment. One more in my career."But what's more important is how the team played. We were playing a great team. In my opinion, it was a fair result. Obviously we are very happy because the game was about to end and we managed to equalise. It was a hard-fought game.

"We are not the favourites but we are candidates. We will do our best. Now we will try to win on Wednesday against Morocco so we can move on to the next stage. I think the team is doing very well."Manchester City's Bernardo Silva, who was withdrawn for Ricardo Quaresma as Portugal chased a leveller, singled out his captain as the game-changer.

"We had a great Cristiano. You have to give him credit because when he is at top form anything is possible. He is the best player in the world," the midfielder stated. "Portugal played a great first half, so much so that we went into half-time ahead. Then we realised it would not be an easy game and we came into the second half with a lot of problems. "In the end it was a fair result for both teams."

I would not trade anyone on Spain for Ronaldo - Hierro

Spain manager Fernando Hierro praised Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portugal star’s hat-trick against his side, but would not take him over anyone on his squad.

Ronaldo delivered a stunning performance in the Group B match, scoring a brilliantly struck free-kick in the late stages to snatch Portugal a point in a thrilling 3-3 opener with their Iberian rivals. The goal followed Ronaldo winning a penalty kick in the early stages and then converting it to give Portugal an 1-0 lead and the Real Madrid star scoring again putting his side back in front thanks to a David de Gea howler late in the first half.

Ronaldo’s heroics allowed Portugal to overcome a pair of Diego Costa equalisers and a brilliantly struck Nacho goal from distance that gave Spain a second half 3-2 advantage.Though the late goal snatched victory away from Hierro in his Spain head coaching bow, coming days after he was appointed following Julen Lopetegui sacking, Hierro said he would not trade any of his current players for the Portugal superstar.

"When you have a player like Ronaldo, it is extremely fortunate for whichever team has him,” Hierro said at his post-match news conference. “I have a really good relationship with Ronaldo, but I certainly would not change him for any of the players in my squad." Meanwhile, Portugal boss Fernando Santos confessed he had run out of superlatives for his star man, declaring him the world’s best.

However, on the heels of Ronaldo becoming the fourth player to score at four World Cups, Santos spoke of his hope that he can make it five in 2022."I keep talking about Cristiano but what more can I say?” Santos said. “He's the best in the world.

“I hope that he keeps scoring and if he's there in Qatar, I hope he scores again."

'That happens to the best' - Mourinho backs De Gea after World Cup blunder

Spain goalkeeper David de Gea will know his error against Portugal was a "bad mistake", according to his club manager Jose Mourinho.

De Gea fumbled a tame Cristiano Ronaldo strike into the net late in the first half of the enthralling 3-3 World Cup draw between the teams on Friday. That goal completed Ronaldo's brace and the Portugal star sealed a hat-trick with a stunning 88th-minute free-kick to earn his side a draw in the Group B clash.

Mourinho – who was helped to a second-place finish in the Premier League by De Gea's heroics at Manchester United – said the 27-year-old would be well aware of his error.

"De Gea is my boy," he told RT ."It hurts me to say it but he knows it was a bad mistake. It's a mistake he doesn't make with us at Manchester United because he was named player of the season for fantastic performances.

"But that happens to the best."Despite leading thanks to a Diego Costa double and Nacho Fernandez's fine strike, Spain were forced to settle for a draw after Ronaldo's late heroics.Spain face Iran next Wednesday before closing Group B play against Morocco.
