Cristiano Ronaldo admits overhead kick ovation helped bring him to Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo has admitted that the reception Juventus fans gave him after his remarkable overhead kick goal against them last year helped sway him to join the Serie A side.

The former Real Madrid forward netted an incredible goal in last season's Champions League quarter-final first leg in Turin. The strike was so impressive that even the home Juventus supporters stood up and applauded the Portugal star's effort.

Those fans wouldn't have known it at the time, but their ovation would be a major factor when Ronaldo decided to move from Madrid to Juventus in the off-season.

"The small details make the big difference at the end of the day so … I would say what I saw in the stadium helped [the transfer]," Ronaldo said on his unveiling as DAZN's first Global Ambassador.

"Not 100 per cent of course but some parts make you think. The 33-year-old said his strike, which has been nominated for the UEFA Goal of the Season prize, produced a reaction from away fans that he had never seen before.

"[It] was in my opinion one of the best goals of my career so far," Ronaldo said."And, of course, when the people start to applaud me in the stadium I was like, ‘wow'."[It] surprised me a lot because this has never happened in my life, so [it] was [an] unbelievable moment."

Ronaldo will be busy trying to help Juventus win an eighth straight Scudetto and the Champions League this season, but he revealed that he enjoys other sports during his down time.
The Portugal star in particular is a fan of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), but has a wide array of sporting interests outside of football."I like for example UFC fights," Ronaldo said. "I like to watch tennis, basketball... ping pong is my second sport that I know how to play well."But I will say UFC is good, I like to see the fights."

Rooney backs Ronaldo and Juventus for Champions League

Cristiano Ronaldo can lead Juventus to their first Champions League crown in 22 years, says former Manchester United team-mate Wayne Rooney.Ronaldo won four of the last five Champions League finals with Real Madrid but completed a shock €112million to the Serie A holders last month.

Juve have lost five times in the final - including to a Ronaldo-inspired Madrid in Cardiff two years ago - since they beat Ajax in 1996 to claim their last crown.

But Rooney believes the capture of Portugal captain Ronaldo could be the boost Juve need to take the next step in the Champions League."He'll do what he's been doing for the last 10 years," Rooney told CNN."He'll bring goals to Juventus and I fancy Juventus to win the Champions League this year solely for the fact Cristiano has gone there.

"As a person he's a nice guy, a family guy, works hard and he's always got his family around him which is great to see."He works hard and deserves all the credit he gets because he's put that effort in to be at the top."

Ronaldo, who has been named the first global ambassador for live sports streaming service DAZN, made his Serie A debut in a 3-2 win at Chievo on Saturday.Rooney, of course, is familiar with the talents of Ronaldo, having formed a deadly partnership with the Portuguese at Old Trafford.

The pair played together between 2004 and 2009, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and two League Cups during their time in Manchester.

While Ronaldo left to join Real in 2009, Rooney stayed at United until 2017, adding another two Premier League titles and the FA Cup to his trophy haul, before first joining Everton and then heading to DC United.

Since moving to America, Rooney has scored three times in MLS, with DC currently eighth in the Eastern Conference.

Henry agrees to take Bordeaux job

Thierry Henry has said 'yes' to becoming Bordeaux's new head coach and the decision over appointing him now rests with the club's new owners General American Capital Partners (GACP), Goal understands.

Arsenal's record scorer is eager to take the post vacated by Gus Poyet, who was suspended by the club last Friday following an outburst criticising the handling of the transfer market.

Though the Uruguayan remains under contract, he has effectively been pushed out of his role, creating a void that Bordeaux are keen to fill with a high-profile name.

Ex-Germany boss Jurgen Klinsmann, who played with Monaco, and Laurent Blanc, who previously won Ligue 1 with Bordeaux, are two names who were linked with the post, yet Henry has emerged as the No.1 choice.Indeed, Bordeaux tried to offer Zinedine Zidane the opportunity to cut his teeth as a coach in the Gironde but now GACP, who take control of the club in September, will now make the final decision over whether to appoint Henry.

The Frenchman, who is currently an assistant coach with the Belgium national team, is very interested in the challenge, but only gave the green light to take to the role after certain conditions were met.

Primarily, Henry wished to know about the funding he will have to strengthen the squad when GACP complete their takeover and whether he'd have flexibility in the market.

Meanwhile, the 41-year-old has already been in touch with former staff at Bordeaux in order to assess the current state of the team and the infrastructure of the club.

Henry has sounded out former Gunners team-mate Gilles Grimandi as his assistant at the club, with the legendary forward wanting to follow a similar model to that implemented by Blanc when he took over the club in 2007.The former Arsenal striker's manager Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, has already given his backing for the 41-year-old to take the role.

The Stade Matmut-Atlantique side finished sixth in Ligue 1 last term but have made a sluggish start to the campaign this time around. They suffered a 1-0 defeat to Strasbourg on the opening day of the season and then crashed to a 2-1 reverse away to Toulouse in a derby match last Sunday.

However, they have made strong progress in the Europa League, winning all six of their qualifying fixtures to date. On Thursday, they face a trip to Gent under the stewardship of Eric Bedouet, who is their current interim boss.

Bordeaux’s next league fixture comes on Sunday, when they play host to Monaco.

Ozil needs a kicking at Arsenal to toughen him up - Adams

Arsenal legend Tony Adams has suggested that Mesut Ozil needs to be “toughened up” by taking a kicking from team-mates in training.

While the 29-year-old midfielder’s ability remains without question, his suitability to life in the Premier League continues to be called into question.Unai Emery took the decision to haul the German off during the Gunners’ last outing, with the Spaniard deciding that he needed more steel in the middle of the park during a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea.

Adams believes Ozil is capable of adapting his game to meet the demands of the English top-flight, but only if he receives the same kind of treatment as Dennis Bergkamp did during his time in north London. The former Arsenal captain told The Sun: “If you have solidity and strength in your team, then Ozil is a great asset. He’s a World Cup winner and a class act.

“He’s like Bergkamp, who cruised through his first couple of years at the Arsenal.
“We had to get him a little bit toughened up but Ozil hasn’t got the people around him to push him and get him going.“There’s only so much a coach can do. It starts in training. We used to kick Dennis. [Steve] Bouldy would kick him up in the air again and again.

“After a while of this he turned round and stamped on Bouldy and said ‘I’ve had enough of you effing kicking me, you’re going to get a little bit back here’.“We all said ‘aye, aye, he’s a got a bit about him — Hallelujah!’“But it’s all become a little bit too nice there. You can’t criticise or say bad things.

"When I was at the club, if people weren’t pulling their weight, I’d tell them. If you haven’t got leaders, you get anarchy. People just do what they want to do.“The game has changed and it’s not about kicking people now but it is still about aggression.

“It’s about tracking runners, getting in behind teams, getting down the throats of opponents and really testing their touch.”

Adams believes Arsene Wenger is partly to blame for the shift in culture at Arsenal, with the Frenchman – who saw a 22-year reign with the Gunners come to an end over the summer – placing more emphasis on artistry than battling qualities. The ex-England international said: “For the last 10 years he lost the balance.

“He stuck to his principles but he has an obsessive and addictive personality — he had to, to stay in that job for so long.“Dave Sexton always said that a team needed a balance of ‘artists and soldiers’. Now George Graham would have wanted 10 soldiers and one artist.

“Arsene would have wanted 10 artists and one soldier. But I played this game with him once and he said ‘you need 11 artistic soldiers, Tony!’“That was his perfectionism. His obsession was to play free, play open, with no fear. Be entertaining and construct 18-pass moves for every goal.“That’s a wonderful starting point but you maybe need a bit of realism when you don’t have the best players in the world.”

Jose Mourinho, Rafael Benitez and Walter Mazzarri earn Joel Obi’s praise

Chievo new signing Joel Obi has appreciated Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, Newcastle United’s Rafael Benitez and Torino’s Walter Mazzarri for their teachings. The trio have played crucial roles in the development of the Nigeria international during their stints in Italy.

Obi rose through the ranks in Inter Milan youth academy before Mourinho promoted him to the first-team in 2009.

The midfielder did not play a game for the first team until September 2010 when Rafael Benitez handed him his debut in a Uefa Champions League match against Werder Bremen followed by his Serie A bow against Cagliari in October.Last season, the former Parma and Torino player enjoyed his most productive campaign in Italy with six goals in 25 games in all competitions under Walter Marrazzi before completing a three-year deal to Chievo this summer.

During his presentation to the media, the 27-year-old described the former Inter Milan coaches as ‘great managers’.“I have numerous great managers in the past who have taught me a lot,” Obi was quoted as saying by Passione Inter .

“One of the best is Jose Mourinho who promoted me to the first team, then I think of Rafael Benitez who gave me my first team debut. I have to thank them and Walter Mazzarri.“I look to learn from every coach I have in order to improve.”Obi made his Chievo debut as a 78th minute substitute in the 3-2 loss to Juventus.

Mkhitaryan hits back at Arsenal critics after 'tough start'

Henrikh Mkhitaryan has hit back at those critics writing Arsenal off after two games of the new Premier League season.Having been handed a testing opening in 2018-19, the Gunners currently find themselves pointless.

Successive defeats have been suffered to Manchester City and Chelsea, with Unai Emery overseeing the club’s worst start to a top-flight campaign in 26 years.

While there is an obvious need to kick-start proceedings, Mkhitaryan claims to be baffled as to why Arsenal’s detractors have been so quick to condemn individual and collective showings.

The Armenian forward told BBC’s Football Focus: "I'm the worst critic in my football game and I don't need extra criticism."I know very well what I am giving to the team and what the team gives me."

Mkhitaryan added on a new era under Emery after 22 years of life in north London under Arsene Wenger: "We have a new manager and are trying to adapt to his philosophy and also his demands."It has been a tough start of course - we faced two good teams in Man City and Chelsea - but you don't have any easy opponents in this league.

"We lost the first game and the second one as well. But that's football. We just have to stay positive and continue working hard and the good results will come.

"We don't feel any pressure. We are not thinking that something is going wrong because we are moving in the right way even if we lost two games."I don't know why people are criticising so much. I'm not paying attention because I know if I've played bad or well."

Mkhitaryan recorded his first goal of the season in a 3-2 defeat at Chelsea last time out and is looking to reinvent himself at Arsenal to meet the demands of a new coach and playing style.
The former Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United star told the Gunners’ official website: “I don’t think you’re going to see the Dortmund Mkhitaryan, because in Dortmund the philosophy was different, the playing style was different, the league was different.

“Arsenal are playing in a different league with a different manager and different team-mates.“I don’t want to see the old Mkhitaryan being here at Arsenal. I want to be someone new, someone else who can show that he’s capable of doing the same for Arsenal as well.

“I’m not just playing football to play, I’m always playing football to win games and titles.

“At the end of your football career, people are going to remember you for what you have achieved, what you have won. I’m playing to win titles, I’m doing my best for this club to win titles and of course that’s my main goal.”

Arsene Wenger arrives Liberia to receive country's highest honour from president Weah

Arsene Wenger has arrived Liberia ahead of being awarded the country’s highest honour by his former player and president George Weah.

In 1988, Weah was signed by the Frenchman to Monaco; a move that kick-started his meteoric rise in football which saw him become the first and only African player to win the World Player of the Year, in 1995.

After leaving football in 2003, Weah went into politics and was successful in his run as president of his country, winning the election by a landslide in January.

On Wednesday evening, Wenger, who ended his 22-year union with Arsenal at the end of last season, arrived the Roberts International Airport. The Frenchman is set to be inducted into the country's Order of Distinction as the Knight Grand Commander of the Humane Order of African Redemption for his contributions to sports in Africa.

During his stay at Arsenal, Wenger coached 16 players from the continent including Nigeria’s Kanu Nwankwo and Cote d’Ivoire defender Kolo Toure who were involved in the club’s last success in the English Premier League in 2004-05.
The award ceremony will take place in Monrovia - the country’s capital - on Friday.

Bravo injury a blow for Man City, says Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said the loss of goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to injury is a blow for the Premier League champions.Chilean veteran Bravo, 35, is out of action after suffering a ruptured Achilles tendon in training during the week.

City have recalled 19-year-old Aro Muric from his loan at Dutch side NAC Breda to serve as Ederson's understudy.

Discussing Bravo's absence ahead of Saturday's clash against Wolves, Guardiola told reporters: "Claudio is a keeper with a lot of experience."His second season was so good with the team and big clubs always need good goalkeepers and we had it with Eddy and Claudio and then young keepers with Aro and [Daniel Grimshaw] Grimmy."Unfortunately, that's happened. Now we wish him a good recovery and to come back as soon as possible to be fit and play with us.

"The first week we lost Kevin [De Bruyne] and now Claudio, hopefully we can stop it."Bravo has played more than 40 games in all competitions since arriving from La Liga giants Barcelona in 2016.

While initially brought in to be the starter, an inconsistent first year with City saw the club spend big to bring in Ederson prior to the 2017-18 season, relegating Bravo to a backup role.

Bravo still helped City pick up silverware, as he was the team's goalkeeper for their Carabao Cup triumph over Arsenal last season.

Bayern Munich 3 Hoffenheim 1: Champions survive scare to secure Kovac a winning start

    4F5E2A0A00000578-6095891-image-a-67_1535142684331.jpg

Niko Kovac secured a first Bundesliga victory in charge of Bayern Munich as the champions commenced their title defence with a nervy 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday.Robert Lewandowski converted an 82nd minute penalty at the second attempt before Arjen Robben struck in stoppage time to seal all three points.

It appeared as though new boss Kovac would be forced to settle for a point when Adam Szalai produced a classy 57th-minute finish to cancel out Thomas Muller's earlier header.

But the reigning champions, who lost Kingsley Coman to a concerning ankle injury, were given a lifeline when substitute Havard Nordtveit brought down Franck Ribery with under 10 minutes remaining.Lewandowski, recently vocal in the press about feeling unsupported by Bayern, had his first attempt at the winner saved by Oliver Baumann, and Robben's successful follow-up was ruled out for encroachment.

The prolific Poland striker was subsequently sent back to the spot and made no mistake as Robben eventually joined him on the scoresheet with a clinical finish at the death.

Bayern had started like a team that finished 21 points clear last season and their ominous opening was rewarded thanks to Muller's header from a Joshua Kimmich corner in the 23rd minute. They did suffer a setback when Coman hobbled off following a crude late challenge from Nico Schulz, and Kovac's headaches mounted 12 minutes after the interval as Szalai punished some sleepy defending.

A response was needed and it eventually came through two goals in a frantic final 10 minutes, Lewandowski and Robben combining to end Kovac's curious record of having never previously beaten Hoffenheim.

Guardiola: Manchester City players still not fit

Manchester City have hit eight goals in their opening two Premier League matches but Pep Guardiola feels there is still plenty more to come.

The Spanish coach does not believe the champions will be at full capacity until after the September international break, with several players returning recently after extended breaks over the summer.City have begun their title defence in impressive fashion, following an opening 2-0 victory at Arsenal with a 6-1 thrashing of Huddersfield Town.

But they have also been hit by serious injury setbacks for Kevin De Bruyne (knee) and Claudio Bravo (Achilles) and, ahead of Saturday's trip to Wolves, Guardiola conceded the squad were still grappling with a quick turnaround following the 2018 World Cup.

"The problem for us is we are not far away but we are still not fit," he told a news conference."We see how much effort was spent by the players, normally the regeneration is quicker and they need more time because we didn't have a pre-season.

"Players still complain about muscular problems. That's why Claudio is out and Kevin and this week Fernandinho had a few problems with recovery after the win over Huddersfield but that is normal - we demand a lot."We are still not in the best condition, that's why we have to take points and hopefully after the international break we can be better and better."

One player to have hit the ground running is experienced playmaker David Silva, who crowned a dazzling display against Huddersfield with a sumptuously dispatched free-kick.

Silva was admired from the stands by his partner and baby son Mateo, having missed matches last season to be with his family after his child was born extremely prematurely last December.

"Firstly, he [Guardiola] has been amazing with me," the 32-year-old told Sky Sports, having made his 250th City appearance last time out."With everything that happened to me, he gave me a lot of freedom, so I'll always be grateful to him.

"Secondly, inside the pitch, he makes things easier for you. He sees everything before it actually happens and that, as a player, helps a lot."It was very special [having Mateo at the Huddersfield game]; the best moment of my life.

"When it all happened, I was only thinking about everything going well and I wished I could have him one day with me at the stadium, and it finally happened."

Ronaldo will play against Lazio, Allegri confirms

Cristiano Ronaldo will make his home debut for Juventus in Saturday's Serie A game against Lazio, head coach Massimiliano Allegri has confirmed.

Ronaldo's first competitive appearance for the club came in a 3-2 victory at Chievo that saw Federico Bernardeschi score a late winner to earn the reigning champions their first three points of the new league campaign.

The former Real Madrid superstar drew a blank in the game, with the team looking more threatening after he shifted from a central role to the left following the introduction of Mario Mandzukic as a second-half substitute.

Despite some concerns over his match fitness, Ronaldo will keep his place in the team against Lazio, with Allegri predicting an improved understanding between the forward and his team-mates in front of the home fans.

"Cristiano is set to play tomorrow," Allegri told a news conference. "It's important to bear in mind, however, that our forwards are the players who've had the least amount of pre-season training, so they need to be managed with care.

"Cristiano is always striving for more. He's highly competitive in everything he does. He has built his own success over the years through hard work and sacrifice. He's a role model for many of the other guys and he raises our overall quality."There will be better link-up play between our midfielders and forwards, which will undoubtedly benefit Cristiano.

"I believe that Cristiano's goal at Allianz Stadium in last season's Champions League has helped to build a strong rapport and significant mutual respect between himself and the fans. I think it had an influence in his choice to join Juventus."
While Ronaldo's presence in the XI to face Lazio is assured, Allegri is less sure whether World Cup winner Blaise Matuidi is ready for action.

"Blaise is an important player for us, as he demonstrated last year," Allegri added. "He's in excellent condition, but I still need to decide if he plays. I have plenty of top-class midfielders to choose from."Lazio are a physical and very well-organised team, who love to hit their opponents on the counter-attack. Therefore, we need to stay very focused throughout the match.

"There's excitement in the air. Lazio will make it a great encounter. They defeated us last time at Allianz Stadium to end a 41-game unbeaten run. So, [Saturday] is very important, even if it's only our second match of the season."

Ronaldo scored a direct free-kick at the 45th attempt in a major tournament at the World Cup and Allegri expects the Portugal captain to compete with a number of team-mates for set-piece duties."Cristiano and Paulo Dybala are our two designated penalty-takers this season," said the Juve boss. "The problem is more about who takes free-kicks, where we now have around six or seven players who'll be standing around the ball!"

The 5-time Ballon d'Or winner will hope that he can get off the mark in front of the Allianz Stadium tomorrow and start to repay some of the £105 million ($135m) fee that the club paid to take him away from Real Madrid this summer.

:oo:Under-fire Man Utd boss Mourinho leaves media puzzled with bizarre pre-Tottenham press conference

Often hesitant to face journalists and their intrusive questions, Premier League managers have a tendency to turn up late for press conferences instead of on time.

But Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho took an unusual step to try to avoid the media on Friday when he strolled in to greet the press - many of whom had yet to arrive - 30 minutes earlier than expected, and then walked back out four minutes later after a series of short and rather unhelpful answers.Tension has been building around the Portuguese already this season as he was left frustrated by their business during the transfer window.

It has been reported that the former Real Madrid boss has fallen out with director Ed Woodward and it has been suggested that there could soon be a split between coach and club.

Although Mourinho insisted that there are no problems between him and Woodward, his one word answers on the matter only raise further questions. When asked if all was well with Woodward, he replied: "Of course", and then responded simply "no" when pressed on any problems with him.

Mourinho's personal relationship with United midfield Paul Pogba has also again come into question this season, with the pair going head-to-head in a string of cryptic messages via the media.

The Frenchman, who led his country to the World Cup trophy in the summer, stirred the pot once more following United's opening Premier League fixture against Leicester.

"There are things I can say and there are things that I cannot say, otherwise I will get fined," Pogba told reporters when asked if he felt comfortable at the club.

Mourinho then moved to quash rumours of a falling out, however, claiming he's "never been so happy" with his stand-in captain. Pressed further on the situation ahead of Tottenham's visit to Old Trafford on Monday, Mourinho was typically spiky in his reply.Asked how he felt about Pogba's comments on the situation at the club, Mourinho said: "Paul said it, he has to answer by his words.

"If you want any explanation about Paul’s words you must get him and ask him.”United host Spurs having been beaten by Brighton in their last outing, Chris Hughton's side running out 3-2 winners on the south coast in Matchday Two.

Mourinho and his team have been subsequently criticised by pundits and supporters but the Red Devils boss isn't interested in external opinions."I feel we played well against Leicester and we won. I feel we played bad against Brighton and we lost."

"I would like to play well and win [against Tottenham]."Pushed further on whether he has been impressed by Mauricio Pochettino's side so far this term, Mourinho said: "I'm not going to comment."

Mourinho's recent concerns with his defensive players were also raised in Friday's press conference, with United making no secret of their desire for an additional centre-back in the summer transfer window.Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire were both targeted by United, though neither move transpired and Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly were partnered at the back against Brighton at the Amex.

After an unconvincing display, Mourinho was questioned as to whether the pair had progressed as the Portuguese had hoped, though he was again quick to shut down reporters."I don't analyse with you my players," he said.

United and Spurs will meet at Old Trafford on Monday evening before Mourinho and his side travel to Burnley and Watford in their following two fixtures.

Richarlison, Everton's rising NxGn star bringing Samba to Goodison Park

Everton's recent history in the transfer market is checkered at best. Last summer's £150m spending spree brought little return.

This season, majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri was not prepared to give those responsible a second chance and instead opted to bring in Marcel Brands, a man the Iranian coveted before appointing former Leicester City scout Steve Walsh in the summer of 2016.

The 56-year-old arrived in the north west with a glowing reputation, having helped develop Eredivisie clubs RKC Waalwijk, AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, but Everton's first signing this summer, Richarlison, led to concerns that the club had learned nothing from their past transfer misdemeanours.

Reports claimed that Marco Silva's side had agreed a deal worth £50m with Watford for the 21-year-old Brazilian, whose form dipped when the Portuguese was relieved of his duties at Vicarage Road, but it eventually became apparent that the move was worth around £40m, with a sizable chunk of that figure made up by potential add-ons.

An eye-watering fee for a player full of potential but one that had failed to find the net in any of his last 15 appearances for the Hornets, Silva and Brands admitted they paid a premium to bring the former Fluminense star to Everton.

But despite the many naysayers, Richarlison has gone some way to repaying the fee and faith shown in him by Silva with two stellar performances for an Everton side rejuvenated by his presence and the Portuguese's methods.

Technically gifted with the pace and skill to torment defenders, what is perhaps most noticeable about Richarlison, apart from his goals, is his willingness to carry out his defensive duties and his enthusiasm to engage in the physical battle.

Leading Everton's press from the front, the Brazil youth international has already made five clearances, five tackles and three interceptions this season. His commendable work ethic is now being mirrored by his teammates, who adopted a languid and laboured style for the majority of last season, while the profligacy that haunted him at Watford has made way for a calmer approach in front of goal - three goals from four shots this season suggests he has added a cold, clinical nature to his game.Doubts still linger over Richarlison's consistency, but the Nova Venecia-born supremo has wasted no time in setting lofty ambitions for both himself and the Blues this season.

"I feel more prepared, I already know the rhythm and style of the Premier League, which helps me on the way to the achievements," Richarlison told UOL Esporte. "I want to be the top scorer of the league, take Everton back to the Champions League and therefore reach the Brazilian national team."

Lofty ambitions indeed, but if both Richarlison and Everton can build on the early momentum their performances and new signings have generated, a memorable season awaits for the blue half of Merseyside.
