Wolves 1 Manchester City 1: Laporte rescues point after controversial opener

    4F61BC9D00000578-6097415-image-a-45_1535202167094.jpg

Aymeric Laporte rescued a point for Manchester City as they suffered an early stumble in their title defence with a 1-1 draw at Wolves.

City, who reached a record 100 points in winning the Premier League last term, had been in typically irrepressible form in their opening two games, brushing aside Arsenal and Huddersfield Town and scoring eight goals in the process.

However, it was a largely frustrating afternoon for Pep Guardiola's men at Molineux as Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling both hit the woodwork - the former doing so for a second time in the 95th minute - after Wolves' Raul Jimenez saw a goal disallowed for offside.

City's mood would have significantly worsened when Wolves took the lead in hugely controversial fashion, Willy Boly turning home from close range with his arm.

But Laporte capitalised on poor defending to head in Ilkay Gundogan's free-kick, ensuring City remain unbeaten and denying newly promoted Wolves a first win of the campaign.

Both sides started brightly and, after Gundogan failed to make the most of a well-worked City move, Wolves looked to have taken the lead. However, Jimenez strayed offside as he converted Diogo Jota's cross after Vincent Kompany had carelessly conceded possession.

City responded superbly and cursed their luck after Aguero hit the post from a deflected cross and Rui Patricio produced heroics with a superb save to tip Sterling's fierce long-range half-volley against the crossbar.

Fernandinho then dragged wide and Jimenez flashed across goal at the other end. Patricio got a hand on a wonderful Benjamin Mendy cross as City continued to threaten, the Portugal international alert to keep out Aguero's tame follow-up.

Similarly smart goalkeeping from Ederson prevented Helder Costa for breaking the deadlock at the near post, but from the subsequent corner Boly dived in at the far post to turn Joao Moutinho's cross in with his right arm.

David Silva was left aghast when referee Martin Atkinson failed to point to the spot after he was pushed in the back by Ruben Neves, but City had reason to celebrate when the unmarked Laporte powered in from Gundogan's dinked cross, before Aguero's injury-time free-kick struck the bar.

Liverpool 1 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Salah strike maintains perfect start

    4F64A95E00000578-6097961-The_victory_puts_Liverpool_top_of_the_table_after_the_forward_sc-a-23_1535227341773.jpg

Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent record in the early weeks of the Premier League season thanks to Saturday's 1-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Mohamed Salah, the Golden Boot winner last term, scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half to net his second of the new campaign - a precise curling finish from Roberto Firmino's assist.Firmino had already been superbly denied by Mat Ryan by that stage, but the Australian was not given the thorough examination he might have expected at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's men never looked likely to relinquish their lead, however, as Brighton threatened only sporadically, allowing new goalkeeper Alisson and his back four to pick up a third straight clean sheet to kick off 2018-19.

Liverpool began brightly and within 15 minutes had seen Ryan pull off a sensational save to keep out Firmino's downward header and Trent Alexander-Arnold curl a free-kick against the crossbar.

The Reds soon took the lead as James Milner robbed Yves Bissouma high up the field and the ball was worked to the right from Sadio Mane to Firmino to Salah, whose first-time finish glanced in off the far post via Ryan's fingertips.

Klopp's men were given a let-off early in the second period as an off-balance Anthony Knockaert shot wide from a promising position inside the box.

There were a couple more nervy moments as the clock ticked down, including Alisson's fine save to keep out Pascal Gross' 89th-minute header, which allowed Liverpool to preserve their status as the only side in the division yet to concede a goal.

Juventus 2 Lazio 0: Ronaldo marks home bow with bizarre assist

    4F6452C200000578-0-image-a-29_1535218808052.jpg

Miralem Pjanic and Mario Mandzukic netted as Juventus saw off Lazio 2-0 on Cristiano Ronaldo's home debut on Saturday.

A packed house in Turin welcomed Ronaldo and his new team-mates and, despite a couple of nervy moments, the champions continued their winning start to the Serie A season.Ronaldo's wait for a first competitive goal in black and white went on as Pjanic struck a fine first-half effort to set Juve on course for victory.

Former Real Madrid man Ronaldo might have netted the second goal, but found his feet in a muddle as he seemed destined to convert from close range and the ball instead flicked backwards for Mandzukic to volley in and clinch the points.Sami Khedira hit the post inside the opening 20 minutes when the ball ran away from Ronaldo in the area, before Federico Bernardeschi cut in from the right to draw a superb stop from Thomas Strakosha with a teasing curler.

And Juve's pressure told on the half-hour mark as Pjanic met a bouncing ball 20 yards from goal to arrow a finish into the bottom-right corner.Lazio gained a foothold in the game either side of the interval, but failed to forge a breakthrough, with Ronaldo coming close when he nodded wide midway through the second half.

The new Bianconeri number seven went closer still when Strakosha tipped a dipping effort over the top and that shot lifted the crowd ahead of Mandzukic's decisive goal, where Ronaldo could not finish from close range but inadvertently teed up his strike partner.

Paris Saint-Germain 3 Angers 1: Cavani, Mbappe and Neymar back in the goals

    4F64750400000578-0-image-a-72_1535221530282.jpg

Paris Saint-Germain made it three wins from three in Ligue 1 this season with a 3-1 victory over Angers at Parc des Princes on Saturday.Edinson Cavani, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, reunited in attack for the first time this term, were all on the scoresheet in a largely comfortable win.

Thomas Mangani's penalty had put Angers level at the break, but Thomas Tuchel's side had too much quality in the second half for a team who have lost all three of their opening matches of 2018-19.

The result means Tuchel's 100 per cent record in competitive games remains intact, although he will have had some concerns about his side's performance in the first half.A simple finish for Cavani, making his first start of the season, from Neymar's cross put the champions ahead, but Mangani levelled from the spot after debutant Thilo Kehrer had brought down Flavien Tait.

Alphonse Areola, starting in goal in place of Gianluigi Buffon, then had to make a smart save to deny Jeff Reine-Adelaide after the former Arsenal man went clean through on goal.Angers looked the more comfortable of the teams before the interval, but Mbappe restored the champions' advantage seven minutes after the restart, volleying home his third goal of the season after being picked out by Angel Di Maria.

The points were secured 66 minutes in, when Mbappe combined with Adrien Rabiot to split the Angers defence, before teeing up Neymar for a cool finish. The closest Angers came to a response was a Wilfried Kanga effort that bounced off the line via the crossbar in the closing stages.

Arsenal 3 West Ham 1: Emery's men battle back for maiden triumph

    4F64048E00000578-6097709-image-a-29_1535215004794.jpg

Unai Emery claimed his first win in charge of Arsenal as Issa Diop's own goal and a stoppage-time Danny Welbeck strike secured a 3-1 Premier League victory over West Ham at Emirates Stadium.Marko Arnautovic gave the visitors a 25th-minute lead, with Nacho Monreal restoring parity five minutes later.

An entertaining and error-strewn contest continued to flow from end to end but an injury to Arnautovic robbed West Ham of their prime attacking threat before Diop erred.Welbeck came off the bench to gleefully blast in from close range, ensuring Manuel Pellegrini's fledgling West Ham tenure stands at three defeats out of three.

Arnautovic asked constant questions of Arsenal's high and shaky backline and had already thrashed into the side netting before he exchanged passes with Felipe Anderson to arrow a 20-yard drive into the bottom corner.

Monreal made light of an earlier knock to slam home the equaliser when West Ham failed to clear Hector Bellerin's cross.

Bellerin's mistakes at the other end remained a problem, with Sokratis Papastathopoulos forced into a desperate block from Felipe Anderson before the Spain full-back played Robert Snodgrass onside to shoot too close to Petr Cech.Cech stood firm to thwart Arnautovic in the 55th minute and apparent knee injury he sustained during that attack proved pivotal.

Diop allowed Alexandre Lacazette too much room to turn and shoot, with ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski beating the shot away, and the 21-year-old centre-back was the architect of his own misery 20 minutes from time.

A miscued clearance spiralled up in the air and Aaron Ramsey nodded down for Lacazette to drive into the goalmouth, with Diop only able to divert into his own net.

Felipe Anderson continued to probe, flashing agonisingly across the face of goal in injury time, meaning Arsenal nerves only settled when Welbeck swivelled to dispatch Bellerin's pass.

Bournemouth 2 Everton 2: Concern for Keane as Richarlison, Smith sees red

A thrilling 2-2 draw between Bournemouth and Everton ended in concerning fashion as Michael Keane was taken off on a stretcher wearing a neck brace following a sickening aerial collision in stoppage time.

The scorer of Everton's second goal required oxygen following a mid-air clash with team-mate Idrissa Gueye, forcing a lengthy break in play and overshadowing what had been an eventful clash featuring two red cards.

Keane's injury came after Bournemouth had impressively cancelled out a two-goal deficit, Joshua King converting a 75th-minute penalty and Nathan Ake prodding home an equaliser four minutes later.Everton had earlier defied Richarlison's first-half sending off for retaliation against Adam Smith to establish what seemed a match-winning cushion courtesy of Theo Walcott and defender Keane.

But, though Smith himself received his marching orders in between that quickfire salvo, the Cherries snapped into action to net twice in four minutes and ensure both teams remain unbeaten after their opening three Premier League fixtures.

Eddie Howe's men appeared certain to secure a third successive victory when Richarlison was dismissed late in the first half, the in-form winger punished for a gentle headbutt as he reacted to full-back Smith's apparent provocation.

Everton had other ideas, though, and stunned the home crowd by scoring twice in 21 minutes after the interval, Walcott first beating Asmir Begovic at his near post before Keane doubled the lead with a fine header.

The goals came either side of a Smith red card for pulling back Walcott that had seemed set to condemn the Cherries to defeat, only for another unlikely comeback to be mounted courtesy of King - converting a penalty won by Callum Wilson - and Ake, who bundled home at point-blank range shortly before Keane's injury cast the contest into a negative light.

Southampton 1 Leicester City 2: Last-gasp Maguire strike sinks 10-man Saints

Harry Maguire struck a stunning injury-time winner as Leicester City won 2-1 away at 10-man Southampton on Saturday.A drab encounter had looked set to end all square after Demarai Gray cancelled out Ryan Bertrand's fine opener on his 150th appearance for the Saints.

But Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was shown a second yellow card for a clear dive in the penalty area with 13 minutes remaining and Leicester pushed on in search of a winner.

It arrived from the right boot of England man Maguire in stoppage time as he drilled through a crowded area, beating the rooted Alex McCarthy low to his right.
Southampton edged a dull first half, but Kasper Schmeichel kept out the only two shots on target with a pair of comfortable low parries from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Danny Ings.

The hosts stepped up another gear following the restart and, although Schmeichel was alert to dash out and block a low Ings prod, the Leicester goalkeeper was helpless as Bertrand ran onto a loose ball and powered high into the top-left corner from 20 yards.

That goal belatedly prompted Leicester to lift themselves and Gray was clinical just four minutes later, pouncing on Cedric Soares' poor header to turn and finish low inside the area.

Hojbjerg's foolish fall in the box was spotted and punished by the officials to further hand the initiative to Leicester and Maguire took full advantage, marching forward to sink a fine shot into the bottom corner in the 92nd minute.

:(:(Mourinho: Man Utd making too many mistakes

Jose Mourinho concedes that Manchester United are making too many costly mistakes, with “nobody happy” with an inconsistent start to the Premier League season.

The Red Devils opened their 2018-19 campaign with a 2-1 victory over Leicester, with the likes of Paul Pogba impressing in a narrow win.United’s stand-in skipper has, however, faced criticism along with a number of team-mates after suffering a 3-2 defeat at Brighton last time out.

Mourinho admits that his side have let themselves down at times, with it vital that the collective level of performance is improved ahead of a home date with Tottenham on Monday.

He told MUTV: "You know, just looking to Leicester and Brighton. Against Leicester we didn't make mistakes, we played well, we won. Against Brighton, we made mistakes, we paid for the mistakes and we lost.

"So, I think you look at football in a very pragmatic way, normally you get what you deserve, so if we want to win against a good team against Tottenham, we cannot make mistakes."Mourinho believes his United squad are ready to make amends for their Brighton setback against Spurs.

He has been impressed by the effort he has seen in training, with everyone connected with the club looking for a welcome morale-boost at Old Trafford. The Portuguese added: "I think nobody is happy, obviously.

"But I have enough experience to know that in football you cannot look back for good results, for bad results and you have always to look to the next one. That's our life."So, I'm really happy with the work we did in the week, with the players' commitment and I look forward for the game.

"You can look at [having to wait until Monday] from two different perspectives. By one side I would say yes [it is frustrating] but, on another side, I would say we need time to work and some time to try to recover some players from injury, so it was not bad for us."

Atletico Madrid 1 Rayo Vallecano 0: Instinctive Griezmann the difference

    4F6584DC00000578-0-image-a-37_1535226874099.jpg

Atletico Madrid got their LaLiga campaign up and running as Antoine Griezmann's instinctive second-half finish saw off Rayo Vallecano 1-0 at Wanda Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone's side looked sharp as they drew 1-1 with Valencia in their opening fixture but were sluggish throughout the first half against their local rivals - Thomas Lemar's low effort the only chance of note before VAR dismissed Diego Costa's claim for a penalty. And though Costa could have done better from a Lemar cross early in the second period, it was Rayo who were looking the most likely to break the deadlock.

But Griezmann, who still appears to be far from his best after winning the World Cup with France, was on the spot to tuck home from close range in the 63rd minute, though Jan Oblak had to be at his best late on for Atleti to secure the spoils.

It took until the 37th minute for Atleti to muster a meaningful attack, Lemar drawing a good save from Alberto Garcia with a shot from the edge of the box.Costa cut a frustrated figure up top, but the former Chelsea man wanted a penalty when he flicked the ball into Oscar Trejo's arm. Referee Jose Luis Gonzalez Gonzalez rightly waved away the appeal with the help of video technology.Lemar nearly turned provider after the second-half restart with a neat cutback towards Costa, but the forward was unable to prod home from six yards.

Griezmann suffered no such profligacy, though, when he reacted sharply to get on the end of Stefan Savic's knock-down and hooked in his first goal of the season. But it was Oblak who proved Atleti's hero late on, as the goalkeeper pulled off a string of superb saves to keep Rayo at bay and seal the points.

Napoli 3 AC Milan 2: Zielinski at the double as Ancelotti triumphs in three-goal comeback

    4F65A5DB00000578-6098269-image-a-16_1535228136887.jpg

Napoli brilliantly recovered from two goals down to beat AC Milan 3-2 as Carlo Ancelotti got the better of his former employers at Stadio San Paolo on Saturday.

Piotr Zielinski scored twice in 14 second-half minutes before substitute Dries Mertens capped off the comeback to consign the Rossoneri to a deflating defeat in their first outing of the new Serie A season.

Gennaro Gattuso had appeared set to record a memorable victory over Ancelotti - under whom he won the Champions League twice as a player - when David Calabria doubled a lead earlier opened by Giacomo Bonaventura.

But the influential Zielinski soon took command of the contest with two fine finishes and the hosts' dominance was rewarded through Mertens' 80th-minute winner, continuing Napoli's unbeaten run in this fixture to eight Serie A meetings.

Real Valladolid 0 Barcelona 1: Dembele strike enough for champions

    4F66D6A500000578-0-image-a-46_1535233999062.jpg

Barcelona battled to a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid on Saturday to make it two victories from two in their LaLiga title defence.

Ousmane Dembele's second-half strike settled matters at the Jose Zorrilla against last season's LaLiga123 play-off winners.Valladolid thought they had equalised through Keko in second-half stoppage time, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR referral.

It was a far from convincing display from Ernesto Valverde's side, but it means they move top of the table ahead of Sunday's fixtures, while Valladolid are still looking for their first goal and win of the season.

Barca recalled Philippe Coutinho to the starting line-up but struggled for rhythm in the first half, with Dembele wasting the best of the early chances following a fine cushioned pass from Lionel Messi.

Dembele remained the most threatening of the champions' attackers, though, and made the most of his next good chance, sending a controlled volley past former Barca goalkeeper Jordi Masip 57 minutes in after a header down from Sergi Roberto.

Valladolid responded well to the setback and looked the most likely to score next, with Marc-Andre ter Stegen saving from Keko and Kiko Olivas in the final 15 minutes.

Luis Suarez had what he thought was the decisive second goal disallowed for offside, but Barca held on to make it two wins and no goals conceded from two league games this term, although it took a VAR intervention to deny Keko's last-gasp header.

Victory over Gattuso's Milan 'emotional' for Ancelotti

Carlo Ancelotti hailed the determination of his Napoli side after they fought back from 2-0 down to beat AC Milan 3-2 in Serie A on Saturday.Goals from Giacomo Bonaventura and Davide Calabria saw the Rossoneri take charge of the contest at Stadio San Paolo.

But a Piotr Zielinski brace and Dries Mertens' 80th-minute winner saw the hosts come out on top, as the boss of the Partenopi earned the bragging rights in a contest against old club, now coached by Gennaro Gattuso, a stalwart player in the Milan team that won the Champions League twice under Ancelotti.

"Milan played a splendid game, but after going 2-0 down, we showed great desire not to let go, to keep believing in our chances and to fight back vehemently," Ancelotti told DAZN.

"I have a fond memory of all my former players, but with Gattuso there is something special. It's a wonderful evening, one full of emotions for me. We've all been fortunate to experience it and I didn't even have to pay for a ticket!

"Milan hadn't really given many signs of being dangerous in attack, but surprised us with two similar goals. It was very difficult in that situation, then we changed system and the crowd pushed us on to turn it around."After seeing his team give up the lead to make a losing start to the new domestic campaign, Gattuso sought to deflect the blame away from his players.

"The biggest regret is that after the goal for 2-1, we simply disappeared from the game," he told DAZN and Sky Sport Italia.

"Everyone started interpreting the match in their own way and we got lost. We've got to figure out how to improve this aspect of the side and I was disappointed by the lack of reaction we showed.

"I take full responsibility, because if the team is afraid, then that is the fault of the coach. We just switched off after the first mistake and it happened many times last season."
