Hannover 0 Bayern Munich 4: Gnabry and Kimmich star in crushing win

    7469860-6499691-image-a-111_1544903406014.jpg

Bayern Munich eased to a third successive Bundesliga win as they crushed struggling Hannover 4-0 away from home, giving every indication they are close to being back at their best.

Niko Kovac's men have been erratic this season and played out a dramatic 3-3 draw with Ajax in the Champions League as recently as Wednesday, but in Hannover they were irresistible and cruised to a victory that puts them level with second-placed Borussia Monchengladbach on 30 points.

Bayern never looked to be in any danger of dropping points in Lower Saxony, taking an early lead through Joshua Kimmich and then consolidating their dominant position thanks to David Alaba's stunning strike in the 29th minute.

Things were similarly straightforward after the break, with the lively Serge Gnabry and Robert Lewandowski getting in on the act to secure a 12th consecutive Bundesliga win over Hannover for the defending champions.

It took Bayern just 64 seconds to break the deadlock as Thomas Muller – making his 300th Bundesliga appearance – played a hopeful overhead volley to the edge of the penalty area from the byline, and Kimmich found the bottom-left corner.Muller should have got a goal of his own in the 19th minute, but he fired over from 18 yards after being found by Leon Goretzka.

Alaba made no such error just before the half-hour mark, however, smashing a gorgeous left-footed half-volley into the roof of the net from 20 yards after a Bayern corner was partially cleared.Gnabry extended the lead early in the second period, prodding home from close range after seeing his initial shot blocked by a defender.

The previously disappointing Lewandowski joined in just after the hour – nodding in a cross from the excellent Kimmich, but the Poland star could not get a second as he inexplicably fired into the side-netting from six yards in stoppage time.

Torino 0 Juventus 1: Ronaldo capitalises on Zaza woe

    7473096-6499967-image-a-59_1544912550104.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty gave Juventus a seventh consecutive Serie A victory as Torino's Simone Zaza endured a nightmare moment in a 1-0 defeat to his former club in the Derby della Mole.

Torino held their own for 70 minutes in a cagey affair until Zaza dribbled haphazardly back towards his own box with Leonardo Bonucci in pursuit. The forward then sold Salvador Ichazo short with a terrible backpass and the substitute goalkeeper brought down Mario Mandzukic.

Ronaldo converted despite Ichazo's best efforts for his 11th Serie A goal of the season, extending Juve's lead at the summit to 11 points.

Salvatore Sirigu took a heavy blow to the hip early on and the Torino goalkeeper writhed in agony after making a fine reaction save from Ronaldo.Sirigu finally accepted defeat in the 20th minute, making way for Ichazo to make his first Serie A appearance for Torino since January 2016.

His opposite number Mattia Perin – preferred to Wojciech Szczesny by Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri – kept out Andrea Belotti's header and prevented Armando Izzo from scrambling home the rebound.

Izzo had a better chance in the 52nd minute when he got in front of Leonardo Bonucci but headed Cristian Ansaldi's in-swinging free-kick over.Belotti then had a strike deflected behind and Juventus full-back Alex Sandro was fortunate not to be penalised for pulling Zaza to the floor in the penalty area.

It had been largely lacklustre from the champions but a combination of Koffi Djidji and Ichazo thwarted Blaise Matuidi when he was on the end of Ronaldo's excellent low cross.

Increasing pressure told - certainly when it came to Zaza's decision making – and Ronaldo netted decisively before collecting a needless booking for bumping chests with Ichazo after the keeper almost saved his penalty.

Juve thought they had a second when Mandzukic converted Miralem Pjanic's free-kick at the back post, but Ronaldo flicked on from an offside position.

Man Utd make worst league start for 28 years after limp Liverpool defeat

Manchester United’s limp 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday means the club have now made their worst start to a league season since 1990-91.

United’s return of 26 points from 17 games is their lowest tally since the penultimate season of the pre-Premier League era when Alex Ferguson’s side went on to finish sixth, 24 points behind champions Arsenal.

The team have also conceded one more goal at the 17-game mark – 29 – than they did in the entirety of last term when they finished second.By contrast, Liverpool are now 19 points ahead of their great rivals, their biggest ever lead over United 17 games into a season.

United were outclassed by the league leaders at Anfield, going behind in the first half when Sadio Mane turned the ball home, but equalized before the break when Jesse Lingard capitalized on a rare error from Reds goalkeeper Alisson.

Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench in the second half and restored Liverpool’s lead just minutes later with a deflected strike, and the Swiss put the game to bed with his second and the team’s third ten minutes from the end.

United trail the top four by 11 points after Chelsea won 2-1 at Brighton, but speaking after the game Jose Mourinho suggested that his beleaguered side are still capable of reeling in the sides above them and challenging for a Champions League place.

"By winning the title? Of course not,” he told Sky Sports. “I cannot fix that. But we can finish fourth. For sure we will finish in the top six like all the historically best teams, but we can still finish fourth. First we aim for fifth, and then go for fourth.”

United could still secure a place in next season’s Champions League by winning the tournament but, after Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat at Valencia saw them limp into the last 16, that prospect seems increasingly unlikely.

They will find out who they face in the next round on Monday when the draw is made, and travel to Cardiff City for their next outing on Saturday.

Mourinho: All Manchester United can achieve is fourth

Jose Mourinho claimed the best Manchester United can hope for in the Premier League is to finish fourth following their 3-1 defeat at Liverpool.United succumbed to two deflected goals from substitute Xherdan Shaqiri at Anfield, after Jesse Lingard cancelled out Sadio Mane's opener.

Mourinho's side now sit sixth, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, and the Portuguese insisted United can only aim for the final Champions League qualification spot this term.

Asked if he could fix United's predicament, Mourinho told Sky Sports: "What do you mean by fix? You mean win the title? I can't fix this.

"We can still finish fourth, I think it is not easy, for sure we are going to finish in the top six like all of the other historically top teams, but the best we can get is the fourth position."Now we have to look to the fifth position and then probably later the fourth."

Mourinho also defended his defensive tactics in Sunday's encounter, stating United cannot realistically compete with Jurgen Klopp's side. "Liverpool is the better team, we cannot compare their intensity, their physicality, then the technical qualities come up and they are a better team than us," he said.

"In spite of that, we were in the game until we conceded the third, I repeat, in a moment where the most probable result was obviously a draw, because we had as many chances as them to win the game in the last 10-15 minutes."

'Without desire it's hard to win' - Henry blasts Monaco players after Lyon defeat

Monaco head coach Thierry Henry blasted his players for a lack of desire after their 3-0 defeat against Lyon.

The principality club sit second bottom in Ligue 1, three points from safety after winning just three of their first 17 league games. And a very unhappy Henry laid into his players following their 10th defeat of the season, criticising the fight his side showed on the pitch.

"Against Dortmund (in the Champions League), I said, even if we knew we were already eliminated, I'm really upset because you cannot lose like that. Tonight, we did exactly the same thing," Henry said in France Football ."Look at the first two goals. On the first goal, we give them the ball for free.

"The second goal sums up the match for me. A pass of 35 meters I think from Denayer between two players. I cannot understand how that pass happens. Then there's a guy who wants to focus, to score and one who does not want to defend.

"You can play four or five defenders but with a lack of desire, it's hard to win a football match. It was a lack of desire tonight on the goals. So, no excuses, no excuses.

"I think we made life too easy for Lyon. On the goals, we are at fault. We made the match too easy. It's a heavy, hard defeat. Above all, when we make too many mistakes, a team like Lyon, which has many qualities, will score goals."We will have to do what there is to do against Guingamp and try to get out of the relegation zone before going on holiday."

However, Henry tried to find some positives, highlighting the victories over Caen and Amiens, and asserting that he sees the players' desire in training.

He added: "But try to stay a little on what we did in Amiens and Caen. I know that when you play against a team like Lyon, you find yourself immediately in trouble when you make this kind of mistake, as we are well aware. But we try to stay positive anyway.

"I see the team every day in training. I do not feel that it is the desire that is missing. But I think that maybe in our situation, it's the head that makes us make mistakes. On the field, we do everything to win.

"You have to work hard and not give up. For me, it's still a very bad signal when people after the match ask me if the team wanted to win. That must be changed very quickly."
