‘Man Utd just can’t perform’ – Mourinho’s management & signings slated by Owen

Manchester United “just can’t perform” under Jose Mourinho, says Michael Owen, with mismanagement and poor recruitment leaving the club with little choice but to make another change in the dugout. The Red Devils, in what has already been a testing 2018-19 campaign, hit a new low on Sunday as they suffered a 3-1 defeat away at arch-rivals Liverpool.

Mourinho’s men offered little in a highly-charged contest, with Jesse Lingard’s strike handed to them by a mistake from Alisson, and they now find themselves 11 points adrift of the top four.

Owen believes United are paying the price for failings on and off the pitch, with heads starting to drop at an alarming rate, and has suggested that only parting with a beleaguered boss will present those at Old Trafford with any opportunity to salvage something from a disappointing season.

The former Red Devils striker told Optus Sport: “I don’t really see anything changing. I honestly don’t. “I think the players are far better than what they are showing but Mourinho, two and a half seasons now?

“If he’d been here six months, I’d think, ‘Wait until his players come in and he gets a transfer window and it all beds in'. Two-and-a-half years, is anything going to change now?

“It’s been pretty similar - in general they’ve not even threatened to win the league and they’ve gone and spent money which means you should be close to winning the league.

“Added to that, all the players he inherited, the best goalkeeper in the world, a good few youngsters coming through, it should be a lot better. “I can’t see any which way where they’re going to improve. Until something changes, I can’t see anything improving for them I’m afraid.”

“They’re much better for their international teams, we’ve seen them performing great for other teams, all of a sudden they arrive at United and they’re not performing at all.

“Yes, you can blame the players, individual mistakes, it’s not the manager kicking the ball out there, however, I think that Man City and Liverpool are a reflection of their managers, the way they want to press, the way they’ve got loads of energy and all these different attributes that they’re very good at.

“This Man United team at the moment just can’t perform and the buck eventually stops with the manager. We all know they can do more. They’re better players than this. I just don’t think anyone’s happy at the club right now.”

'Man Utd need to reset without Mourinho' - Neville slams ‘naïve’ contract call and managerial choices

Manchester United are “so naïve it’s unbelievable”, says Gary Neville, with the club now in a position where they are going to have to “reset” and break a contract handed to Jose Mourinho less than a year ago.Back in January, the Red Devils tied their Portuguese coach to fresh terms which are due to run until 2020.

There appears to be little chance of him seeing out that deal, with a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday leaving many to suggest that he is teetering on the brink at Old Trafford.

Neville believes a change will be made, either now or in the summer of 2019, with United – who are 11 points adrift of the Premier League’s top four - finding themselves back in a troubling situation of their own creation. The former Red Devils defender told Sky Sports: "Will Mourinho leave? I think it will happen, my preference would always be to get to the end of the season.

"But the boardroom is so naive it's unbelievable, to give him an extended contract knowing the cycle of Mourinho and his three years. The third year is always the difficult year for him.

"So 18 months in, with United second in the league having won two trophies in his first season, that was the point where the board had to hold their nerve and keep him hungry in that third season. The minute he came back from pre-season he was at it and the club lost control.

"There isn't that experience or knowledge of the club above him to be able to manage, control and handle him. His agent was out last week, he goes into press conferences and you don't know what he's going to say next and they don't know what to do with him.

"They are paying the price now. The problem they will have now is that it will cost an absolute fortune to lose him and when you lose a manager midway through a season, there's the situation of who is going to come in.

"What do they want for the next three or four years at the club? Because it's not as easy as saying get rid of the manager. Manchester United need to reset. It's not just the manager, it's deeper than that.

"There is an incredible level of naivety and they lost control of the club when they gave him a new contract, they should never have done that. The minute he came out in that pre-season press conference the club should have gripped him and said, 'we're Manchester United, one more of those and...' They've got to get a grip of their club."

Neville added: "United fans don't want to go to games, they are not looking forward to matches. That's not just now, that was under David Moyes and it was the manager's fault, under Louis van Gaal and it was the manager's fault and now under Mourinho and it's the manager's fault.

"Three good managers that have good records - one of them the best in the last 20 years alongside Pep Guardiola - and that's why you have to say something is broken."I'm sure Manchester United will change the manager at the end of the season at the latest, we're all pretty certain of that.

"But there's a multitude of issues, it's more complex than the manager getting the best out of the players or not being backed. It's a deep problem, it needs resetting, the whole club needs resetting."

Van Dijk salutes ‘game-changer’ Shaqiri as Liverpool revel in ‘special’ win

Virgil van Dijk has lauded Xherdan Shaqiri as Liverpool’s “game-changer” after seeing the Swiss star bag a double in Sunday's “special” 3-1 victory over Manchester United. The Reds were looking for a flash of inspiration at Anfield as they sought to break down the dogged Red Devils’ defensive wall.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had dominated proceedings, but had seen an uncharacteristic mistake from Alisson allow Jesse Lingard to cancel out Sadio Mane’s opener.

Shaqiri was introduced to help deliver a spark, and the 27-year-old needed just three minutes off the bench to fire Liverpool in front and a further seven to put the result beyond doubt.

The summer signing from Stoke has proved to be a useful option for Klopp this season, with Van Dijk telling the Reds' website of his impact in a title-chasing side: “You can concede and it happened. The thing then was to bounce back and make sure we kept pushing, putting the pressure on them and being patient.“That’s what we did and in the end, big Shaq came on and did the job for us.

“He is a fantastic player. He showed it since the first game against Manchester United in America [in pre-season]. He is something different and sometimes that’s a game-changer.”While Shaqiri did the damage in the final third, Van Dijk did well to contain the threat posed by United striker Romelu Lukaku.

The Dutchman added on a vital victory which has lifted Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table: “It was special.“It was a long time ago that we won against them at home. We wanted to make it right and we wanted to show everyone that we’re doing pretty well.

The Dutchman added on a vital victory which has lifted Liverpool back to the top of the Premier League table: “It was special.“It was a long time ago that we won against them at home. We wanted to make it right and we wanted to show everyone that we’re doing pretty well.

“We had to be brave. We knew what we were going to face. They obviously have a lot of quality, especially up front, but we did well – we didn’t give them any chance to have clear options. It was a deserved win.”

While the Reds are delighted to have stretched their unbeaten start to the 2018-19 campaign and made their way back to the summit, Van Dijk insists nobody at Anfield is getting carried.

He added, with a trip to a dangerous Wolves side to be taken in on Friday: “We are on a good way [but] we’ve still got nothing – we need to keep going and take the positive notes out of everything that happened, and the things that could have gone better as well, analyse them and make sure we’re ready for Wolves.”

Champions League last 16 draw: Man Utd face PSG, Liverpool land Bayern & Juventus tackle Atletico

    VA5oucf.jpg

Manchester United will face Neymar and Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp must tackle German opposition in the form of Bayern Munich.Manchester City take on Schalke, Tottenham battle Borussia Dortmund and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus meet Atletico Madrid.

Elsewhere, Lyon have been handed the unenviable task of trying to shackle Lionel Messi and Barcelona, Roma have been paired with Porto and Ajax with reigning champions Real Madrid.

The biggest tie of the round will see Jose Mourinho’s out-of-sorts Manchester United side lock horns with Ligue 1 title holders PSG.

The French giants boast the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani on their books and have made no secret of their desire to complement domestic dominance with European glory.

United have endured a testing 2018-19 campaign to date, but continental competition could offer welcome relief as they ready themselves for the biggest of tests.

Liverpool, who reached the final of last season’s competition, are also going to have to do things the hard way if they are to prolong another challenge for the most prestigious of prizes.

Bayern have not been at their best this season, with a humbling tumble from the Bundesliga summit having been endured, but they boast enough experience and quality within their ranks to trouble the Reds.

Klopp’s side are flying, though, in the Premier League and will fancy their chances against anybody, particularly on memorable European nights at Anfield.Real Madrid were the side to deny Liverpool a place on the top of the podium in 2017-18, as they captured a third successive crown.

Santiago Solari has been charged with the task of replicating the success enjoyed by Zinedine Zidane and can now prepare his side – who are heading to Abu Dhabi for the Club World Cup – for a heavyweight encounter with Ajax.

The Blancos’ arch-rivals Barcelona will hope to have too much for French opponents Lyon, with club talisman Messi having returned to devastating form over recent weeks in the wake of his Ballon d’Or snub.

The Argentine’s eternal rival, Portuguese superstar Ronaldo, also missed out on another Golden Ball, but is eyeing up a fourth Champions League triumph in as many years and a sixth of his remarkable career. He is now with Juventus and will find himself back in the familiar surroundings of the Spanish capital in 2019 when the Bianconeri take on Atletico Madrid.

Manchester City will be looking for Pep Guardiola to mastermind a deep run into the competition, with the Premier League champions still pursuing a first Champions League success.Schalke stand in their way at the next stage, with that contest set to see Leroy Sane reunited with his former club.

Tottenham are also set to face German opponents, with Mauricio Pochettino having seen his side sneak through a testing group to land a second round clash with Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund – who will have Jadon Sancho lining up against England team-mates such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli. The final game of the last 16 will see Roma, who made it to the semi-finals last season, taking on Porto.

The first legs of the eagerly-anticipated fixtures mentioned above will take place on February 12/13 and 19/20, with the return dates pencilled in for two weeks later.

Man Utd trigger one-year option on Martial contract as talks continue

Manchester United have triggered the one-year option in Anthony Martial's contract, securing the forward's services until at least the summer of 2020.Martial's contract had been set to expire at the end of the season, however, talks will now continue over a longer term with the club.

Those discussions have been going on for months but unable to yet get over the line, the club have given themselves more time to complete a contract.

However, Goal understands Martial is amicable to remaining at Old Trafford and the club is confident they will be able to agree a long-term deal with the forward.
It is a similar track the club have taken with goalkeeper David de Gea, whose one-year option was triggered in November. Martial, who joined United from Monaco in the summer of 2015, has delivered eight goals across all competitions this year as he has rebounded from a summer that saw his future at Old Trafford grow increasingly uncertain.

While Martial's debut season with the club was productive, scoring 15 goals across all competitions under Louis van Gaal, his first two campaigns under Jose Mourinho were at times a struggle.

Martial netted just four times in the Premier League in Mourinho's first season and then nine times in the English top-flight in the 2017-18 campaign.

This past summer he butted heads with Mourinho over his failure to return to the club while they were on their pre-season tour of the United States – a move that the forward indicated had to do with complications for his partner following the birth of their child.Reports swirled that Mourinho wished to sell the forward to fund an overhaul of his back line, but Martial remained through the summer transfer deadline.
However, his initial playing time was limited this season, with him making one appearance before coming on a substitute aganst Watford on September 15.

He would then score against Young Boys in the Champions League four days later and has since re-established himself in the team as his seven Premier League goals are best on the squad.

Woodward as much to blame as Mourinho for Man Utd's woes, says Ince

Manchester United's transfer supremo Ed Woodward is just as responsible as Jose Mourinho for the club's current malaise, according to Paul Ince. A 3-1 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday saw United slip further away from the top of the Premier League table.

A title challenge looks all but impossible even before the halfway point of the season and a top-four spot is looking increasingly unlikely with Chelsea sitting 11 points clear.

Mourinho has taken the brunt of criticism for his negative tactics at Anfield, with many tipping the Portuguese manager to lose his job before the new year.

But according to Ince, Mourinho has been let down by Woodward's transfer dealings."Mourinho is the one who fronts it because he is the football manager but Ed Woodward is the one in the stands," the former United midfielder told Goal.

"He is not a football man, he is a business man. The club is the richest in the world from a business point of view, we understand that. But when Mourinho says at the start of the season that we need two centre halves and he can’t get them, then someone has got to take the can. It can’t always be Mourinho."I presume Mourinho would have had a list saying that these are the six or seven players that I want to play for Man United to compete against the other boys.

"They didn’t get them. When they didn’t get them and the results don’t go well, as much as you point at Mourinho, you have to also point at Ed Woodward because he didn’t get the players he wanted. Klopp got the players he wanted.

"Why is [Virgil] Van Dijk going to Liverpool and not Man United? If you ask me now which Man United player would get into the Liverpool team? Only the goalkeeper. That’s where we are now. At the moment he is the only one who would get into the Liverpool team.

"When you look at some of the players that the other clubs have got, why didn’t United get those players? Fred doesn’t even play. Sanchez doesn’t want to be here and wanted to go to City first. Pogba doesn’t play. Players who were bought for £80m-£50m don’t even play. You are right in questioning the recruitment because recruitment is the most important thing in football."When asked why United's signings continue to fall flat, Ince suggested that a lack of mental strength may also be contributing.

"I think the players he is bringing in can’t deal with the pressure to put on a Man United shirt and you are seeing it in the performances. [Anthony] Martial is a prime example," he added.

"For me, he is the most talented player in United’s squad but he can’t deal with the pressure, week-in, week-out. When you are playing for Man United, you have to do it every week. You can’t be four out of 10. You have to be seven or eight out of 10 every week. That’s in games and in training.

"It has changed and you feel because these players have come in, can they deal with all this and with the rivals winning week-in, week-out. You’ve got to look at whether they have the desire and toughness to deal with that pressure. Not all of them, but a lot of them haven’t.

"Look at Kevin De Bruyne, he has every attribute you want in a player. His work-rate, talent, decision making. Nine times out of 10, he makes the right decision, you don’t see that for any outfield player at United. Not one. I don’t see it. I don’t see anyone and the proof is in the pudding."

The Red Devils are back in action on Saturday when they visit relegation-threatened Cardiff City in south Wales.

Salah determined to emulate 44-goal campaign after becoming Liverpool's leading man

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah is “more excited and determined” to succeed this season after establishing a reputation as one of the best players in the world.
The Egypt international enjoyed a stunning debut campaign at Anfield in 2017-18, with 44 goals scored across all competitions.

Those efforts landed him an enviable collection of honours, including the PFA Player of the Year award and Premier League Golden Boot, while he also fired his country to a first World Cup in 28 years.

Recognition has continued into the current campaign, where Salah has been back among the goals with vital efforts at home and abroad, with the BBC African Footballer of the Year crown retained.

He acknowledges that a rapid rise to prominence has taken him a little by surprise, telling GQ Middle East: “I wouldn’t say just the last week. I’d say the whole year has been great.“All my dreams and goals were to become a well-known professional, but I couldn’t imagine I’d reach the level I’m at now.

“Every kid dreams of being on television, but then when I first made it, my targets changed. I wanted to become a professional abroad, and after that I wanted to be the best.”Salah is staking a serious claim to that title, having established himself as one of the finest talents in the Premier League.

He is, however, aware that he must strive for continuous improvement if he is to cement his current standing and force himself back into contention for Ballon d’Or and FIFA Best awards of the future.

Securing a first title triumph since 1990 is a top priority for the Reds, but they are also pursuing further European honours after being paired with Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Irwin urges Mourinho turnaround before PSG Champions League clash

Manchester United great Denis Irwin hopes his old club can find some form before a blockbuster Champions League showdown against Paris Saint-Germain.Jose Mourinho's side were left 19 points off the pace in the Premier League after a dispiriting 3-1 defeat to leaders Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

PSG's dominant attacking array hardly represent an ideal proposition for United on current form but, speaking at Monday's draw in Nyon, Irwin pointed out Mourinho has two months to turn things around.

"With the team, they've got at the moment it's a very interesting draw for us," the ex-Republic of Ireland full-back told BT Sport."There's still two months to go before. They're a top team. We've already seen that.

"They've got plenty of talent going forward with Neymar, [Kylian] Mbappe, [Angel] Di Maria and [Edinson] Cavani."There's two months to go, hopefully we can pick up some form before that. We've got good experience.

"The last month or so has been sticky for us. We have to concentrate on the Premier League now and the FA Cup in January."

Nevertheless, Irwin felt United deserved due credit for emerging from their group as runners-up behind Juventus and at the expense of Valencia and Young Boys.
"We went to Bern and won as well. Juventus and Valencia didn't do that. It was a tricky group to get out of there," he added."There are no easy ties in there and some cracking fixtures to look forward to."It's a great competition, so hard to win. In my day, you had to beat an Italian side to win it. Nowadays, you probably have to beat a Spanish side to win it."

'I'm not thinking thank God it's Bayern' – Liverpool didn't get lucky draw, insists Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is wary of the threat posed by the Reds' Champions League last-16 opponents Bayern Munich and is refusing to underestimate Niko Kovac's men.

The two sides have had contrasting starts to the season, with Liverpool exceeding expectations by sitting top, while Bayern are nine points adrift of Bundesliga pacesetters Borussia Dortmund.Liverpool have picked up where they left off last season and look set to push Manchester City all the way in the Premier League title race.

But Bayern have been wildly erratic and seen new coach Kovac come under significant pressure at times, reportedly coming close to losing his job in November.

Former Liverpool players Steve McManaman and Luis Garcia spoke of their confidence in the immediate aftermath of the draw, certain the Reds will have too much for Bayern, but Klopp was less brazen."At the end, it's a football game on the highest level and we have to play it," Klopp told Liverpool's official website.

"We knew it before, it's not that anybody thought 'thank God it's Liverpool', so we don't think 'thank God it's Bayern'."It's a tough one, but that's how it should be. It's the last 16 of the Champions League so there are only tough teams in and I'm really excited about it."

The draw will see Klopp return to his native Germany for the away leg, and he is excited about the prospect of going up against the side he endured many monumental tussles with in his time at Dortmund."In the last couple of years, they have dominated the German league in the best period of German football," Klopp added.

"Everybody was talking about Germany being in a really good moment and Bayern was dominating the league, that's the truth."It's nice. It's obviously long ago that I played Bayern in a competitive game, so I'm really looking forward to it.

"We all know the stadium; the atmosphere will be great. It's a really nice trip for all our supporters, it's a wonderful city, so that's all good."The flight is not too long and we [the Liverpool staff] obviously know more about German football than about any other league, that's true, but that doesn't make a big, massive difference.

"In the end, the boys have to decide it on the pitch. Let's give it a try."

Manchester United have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager after two and a half years in charge.

The Portuguese, 55, won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford.

But United are sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, who beat them 3-1 on Sunday.

"A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager," United said in a statement.

"The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."

Mourinho Sacked! I have mixed feelings.. Even some of our players are responsible for the teams downfall... Well it's time to Rebuild!

I don't think that this will change anything. Look what happened to Real. Streak of defeats, Lopetegui was sacked and now? Who needs Ronaldo .... right?

United lacks cohesion during play. They immediately lose possession after getting the ball and mess up buildups midway. Just compare how they played and how Liverpool played. You can really see the contrast.

"To be on the top of the league, you have to have top players on your team." I think Mourinho said this kind of a thing sometime ago.
I mean you can't really blame the guy. He said before the start of the season that United defense was bad. No good defenders were signed and we all saw how trash current defense is. but anyhow in the last match it was improved than before. So :dull:

:shocked:Jose Mourinho sacked by Manchester United

    kxYSe8N.jpg

Sky Sports News understands Mourinho was sacked at around 9am on Tuesday in a face-to-face meeting with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward at United's Carrington training base.

Woodward was keen to speak to Mourinho in person to tell him of the board's decision. The Portuguese then departed Carrington at around 12.20pm on Tuesday.

Michael Carrick will take care of first-team affairs before a manager is put in charge until the end of the season. The interim appointment - which is understood will be someone from outside the club - is expected to be announced within the next 48 hours.

Mourinho's future had been the subject of intense scrutiny this season - and the club's worst start to a campaign in 28 years was confirmed with defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

The 55-year-old Portuguese insisted at Anfield that he had not lost the dressing room, as his team sat sixth in the Premier League table and 11 points off the Champions League places.

Woodward is understood to have told Mourinho of his fate shortly before the club announced that "manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect".

The United statement continued: "The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."

Mourinho only signed a new two-year contract until 2020 earlier this year but his troubled season began when he publicly criticised the United board for not backing him in the summer transfer market.

He had wanted at least one new centre-back but he did not get one, with the club signing £50m midfielder Fred, Porto youngster Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant as a backup goalkeeper.

Fractures in his relationship with Paul Pogba began to emerge in September and the France World Cup winner was stripped of the vice-captaincy before Sky Sports News filmed them having an animated disagreement on the training ground.

Pogba was left on the bench for the game against Liverpool on Sunday along with other star players such as Anthony Martial, whose ongoing contract dispute with the club has only added to the inner turmoil at Old Trafford.

Mourinho leaves having won a Europa League and EFL Cup double in 2016-17, winning 84 of his 144 matches in charge.

So :dull:

The liverpool game was a one sided game :dull: it was painful to watch! Actually he can be blamed.. He puts his ego in front. Playing everyone out of position like he wants revenge (Podi un wage) although yeah i agree with you on some points. He did win us a Europa League
I don't know who's decision was to offer smalling a new contract! he is trash just like Jones and the rest. Bailly wasn't used properly same can be said about Shaw!

I say get rid of pogba aswell and useless strikers like Lukaku. Just getting all those massive wages and doing nothing for the team.

This one was coming one way or another...
