Liverpool 4 Barcelona 0 (4-3 agg): Origi & Wijnaldum stun beleaguered Barca

    13215218-7002753-Georginio_Wijnaldum_celebrates_scoring_Liverpool_s_third_goal_to-a-24_1557264808961.jpg

Doubles from Divock Origi and substitute Georginio Wijnaldum fired Liverpool into their second consecutive Champions League final as Barcelona collapsed to an improbable 4-0 humiliation at Anfield.

Facing a daunting 3-0 deficit after last week's first leg, Origi made light of Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino's absence from the Liverpool forward line by poaching a seventh-minute opener on Tuesday.Jurgen Klopp's side kept the contest at a pace frenetic enough that Barcelona were rarely allowed to settle and Wijnaldum's quickfire brace before the hour had the locals in raptures.

It was a night for unlikely heroes and Trent Alexander-Arnold's quickly taken corner allowed Origi to smash high into the net 11 minutes from time – inflicting a humbling upon LaLiga champions Barca and the great Lionel Messi even more punishing than their surrender at Roma in last season's quarter-final.

Liverpool's remarkable 4-3 aggregate triumph means a June 1 final against Ajax or Tottenham - and the chance to right the wrongs of last season's fall to Real Madrid at the last hurdle - awaits.
Shortly after Clement Lenglet's timely touch prevented Jordan Henderson from turning in Xherdan Shaqiri's low cross, the Reds captain drove into the Barcelona box and Marc-Andre ter Stegen could only push a tame shot to the feet of the waiting Origi.Alisson saved sharply from Messi and Philippe Coutinho as Barca began to click into gear, with Ter Stegen's 24th-minute stop from Andy Robertson of a more unorthodox variety.

Liverpool's goalkeeper intervened crucially in first-half stoppage time to deny Jordi Alba after Messi sliced the hosts open on the break.Unlikely hero Wijnaldum entered the fray in place of the injured Robertson at half-time and Liverpool resumed on the front foot, Ter Stegen repelling Virgil van Dijk's instinctive backheel volley from Alexander-Arnold's cross.

Alisson was also back into his work as Suarez sprung the Reds' offside trap – a stop that looked even more vital when Wijnaldum drove Alexander-Arnold's next delivery from open play through Ter Stegen's grasp.

Barcelona were rocking, with memories of Rome – where they crashed out after holding a 4-1 first-leg lead - flooding back as Wijnaldum rose highest to emphatically convert Shaqiri's 56th-minute centre.

Where Barca minds were muddled, Alexander-Arnold's was razor sharp and Origi pounced to leave Messi and his team-mates battered, bruised and beaten.

'Nothing is impossible!' - Liverpool astonish with 4-0 Barcelona beatdown

Liverpool made Champions League history as they came back from a 3-0 first-leg deficit to topple Barcelona 4-0 at Anfield and seal their place in the final for the second season running.

Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum were the heroes for Jurgen Klopp's side on a European night that will go down in history on Merseyside, as a double for the Belgian and Dutchman respectively fired them past the Blaugrana.

The remarkable achievement of the hosts saw them out-play their visitors, with the threat of Lionel Messi and company mostly neutralised by a superb all-round performance on the pitch.
There was plenty of reaction to another showpiece trip for Liverpool, who will face either Ajax or Tottenham in Madrid next month.

'A failure for all of us' - Busquets says Barca were undone by 'smarter' Liverpool

Sergio Busquets says Tuesday was an absolute "failure" for Barcelona as the Spanish side collapsed once again in the Champions League, falling 4-0 to Liverpool on Tuesday.Barcelona went into Tuesday's clash at Anfield nursing a 3-0 lead after Lionel Messi helped guide his side to a battering of Liverpool at the Camp Nou.

That lead unraveled rapidly, beginning with an early goal from Divock Origi, even if Barcelona still looked comfortable for a majority of the first half.

The second half was a whole other story, with Georginio Wijnaldum scoring a pair of goals off the bench after replacing an injured Andrew Robertson.

But Origi's goal, the fourth and final finish, was the most damning, as Barcelona switched off on a corner kick, allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to quickly slide a pass into the Belgian star, who sat all alone in the box.

The loss marked the second consecutive season that Barcelona has thrown away a massive first leg lead, having fallen apart in a 3-0 defeat following a 4-1 win over Roma in last year's semi-final. And Busquets admits that his side was simply not up to the task from the opening whistle once again, and that is why they're heading out of the competition once again with a loss that looked very much like last year's.

"They have been better than us, they have gone for the match since the beginning, they have pressed well in the beginning of the two halves and it has been very difficult," Busquets told Movistar Plus.

"We have not been able to make the chances. We apologize because after Rome this happens again... There's little more (to say).

'Barcelona looked like a youth team' - Suarez devastated by Liverpool schooling

Luis Suarez has offered an apology for the "youth team" mindset that Barcelona displayed in the club’s 4-0 loss at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday. The Uruguayan and his team-mates held a 3-0 lead in their Champions League semi-final tie heading into the second leg at Anfield.

But, much in the same way the club fell against Roma in the Champions League in 2018, Liverpool responded with four goals – two each from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum – to knock the La Liga champions out of the competition.

The loss to Liverpool has brought about immediate heat on Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde, but Suarez was quick to back his manager and says the result falls on the players.

"We are the ones who play, the coach made the tactic that he made in the first leg,” he told reporters. “We, the players, have to be self-aware, we are the ones who play. "We have to apologise for the attitude, we were not a team. To our families, our children, our fans, we have to ask their forgiveness, it cannot be that in a minute we concede two goals.

"In the fourth goal we looked like a youth team. We have to understand all the criticisms that are going to rain on us.” And Suarez says it’s time for Barcelona to look inward after having failed in the Champions League in epic fashion in back-to-back seasons.

"We have to do a lot of self-criticism, it's the second time the same happens to us,”he added.“We cannot make these mistakes two years in a row, we have to reproach ourselves for what we are doing wrong, thinking that everything was finished."

The forward also said he and his team-mates were hurting but that they would need to steady themselves for what is coming their way. “We are very sad, hurt, we are human beings, we feel the pain, the frustration, we have to do self-criticism, put our chest for the bullets of what is coming now."

Barcelona still have three matches left in their season, with two La Liga contests and the Copa del Rey final against Valencia on May 25.

Chelsea facing two-window transfer ban after losing FIFA appeal

Chelsea have lost their appeal to FIFA over the club's two-window transfer ban for breaching regulations relating to the international registration of players under the age of 18.

The Blues were originally sanctioned in February over deals with 29 players, and will now take their appeal process to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
It is unclear which players are related to the breach of regulations.

Part of Chelsea's appeal was upheld, and the club will now be allowed to register players under the age of 16.

A statement from FIFA on Wednesday read: "With respect to all men’s teams, the ban on registering new players, both nationally and internationally for two registration periods, has been confirmed by the FIFA Appeal Committee, with the following exception:

"The FIFA Appeal Committee believes that Chelsea’s wrongdoing consisted in not respecting the prohibition from internationally transferring or registering for the first time foreign minor players."In the committee´s opinion, imposing a ban on registering each and every minor would not be proportionate to the offence committed.

"Consequently, the FIFA Appeal Committee decided that, as far as youth categories are concerned, the ban shall not cover the registration of minor players under the age of 16 who do not fall under the scope of art. 19 of the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, which refers to international transfers and first registrations of foreign minor players."Chelsea have responded to the decision, saying in a statement: "Chelsea FC has today received the decision of the FIFA Appeal Committee.

"The club notes that the FIFA Appeal Committee has decided to partially uphold the appeal lodged by Chelsea FC against the decision of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee. However, the club is very disappointed that the transfer ban of two consecutive registration periods was not overturned.

"Chelsea FC categorically refutes the findings of the FIFA Appeal Committee. It acted in accordance with the relevant regulations and will appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)."

Chelsea previously appealed to FIFA regarding the ban in the hope it would be delayed, but when the governing body refused in March, the club said it was "astonished".Barcelona had successfully made a similar appeal over their transfer ban in 2014 which saw the prohibition postponed until the following year.

The Catalan club was then able to bring Luis Suarez, Ivan Rakitic, Jeremy Mathieu, Claudio Bravo and Marc-Andre ter Stegen to Camp Nou before the ban was imposed. With Eden Hazard looking likely to depart to Real Madrid this summer, Chelsea could be left unable to replace the Belgium international.

Their deal to sign Christian Pulisic, however, is not affected given the USA international was signed in January and loaned back to Borussia Dortmund for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign.

'It's a dream' - Barcelona-slaying Alisson revels another comeback win

Alisson labelled Liverpool's incredible Champions League comeback a "dream" after contributing to Barcelona's capitulation for the second time in just over a year.

Liverpool reached back-to-back Champions League finals in sensational fashion, stunning Barca 4-0 at Anfield on Tuesday to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit. It was another forgettable European night for Barca, who were remarkably eliminated by Roma in last season's quarter-finals after surrendering a 4-1 lead following the opening leg.

Alisson was part of the Roma side that shocked Barca 3-0 in the return fixture to advance on away goals in April 2018 and the Brazil international – now preparing for a European decider with the Reds – revelled in Liverpool's achievement.
"It's an incredible feeling indeed, wow what a game and what an effort," Alisson told Sky Sport Italia. "It had already happened to me as my Roma knocked out Barcelona last year."I am happy when I can help my team-mates out like this… It's amazing, it's a dream. We now have one objective, to win the Champions League final.

"We worked hard this year and we were ready to face Barcelona tonight. In the first leg, Barcelona missed a huge chance late on as they could've made it 4-0. At 4-0, it would've been very hard for us to comeback but at 3-0 we still believed.

"We made a huge comeback and our fans were behind us all game long. It was a memorable night indeed."Liverpool will face either Ajax or Tottenham in the Champions League final in Madrid on June 1.

Before that, though, they take on Wolves with a chance to snag the Premier League title if Manchester City drop points against Brighton on Sunday.

'This has one name: Jurgen' - Mourinho salutes Klopp after remarkable Liverpool comeback

Jose Mourinho has hailed Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool manager inspired his side to a remarkable Champions League comeback against Barcelona. The Reds entered Tuesday's semi-final second leg trailing 3-0, with their hopes of progression to a second straight final looking dim. But, driven on by a raucous Anfield, Liverpool stunned Barca 4-0 behind doubles from Georginio Wijnaldum and Divock Origi.

Mourinho, who was sacked by Manchester United in December, has credited his former Premier League rival for the stunning comeback, or "remontada."

"I didn’t expect it, I said impossible is nothing, I said if it’s possible, Anfield is one of the places to make the impossible be possible," Mourinho told beIN SPORTS."But I have to say that for me, this remontada has one name – Jurgen.

"I think this is not about tactics, this is not about philosophy, this is about heart and soul, and a fantastic empathy he created with this group of players."They had the risk of finishing a fantastic season without anything to celebrate, and now they are one step from being European champions."

Liverpool will face either Ajax or Tottenham in the Champions League final, and their progression was made all the more stunning by the fact that two members of their vaunted attacking trio, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, were missing through injury on Tuesday. "I think Jurgen deserves, you know, the work they are doing in Liverpool is fantastic," Mourinho continued.

"But I think this is about him, this is a reflection of his personality, don't give up, a fighting spirit, every player giving everything."He’s not crying because he’s missing a player, he’s not crying because they are playing 50 or 60 matches per season.

"Other coaches in other leagues they are crying, saying their players are playing too many matches when they play 30 or 35 matches."Everything I think today is about Jurgen’s mentality."

Liverpool will face Wolves on Sunday, hoping to win the Premier League title with a victory and a Manchester City loss or draw against Brighton.

'The coach has to take responsibility' - Valverde unsure over future following Barcelona collapse

An apologetic Ernesto Valverde offered no excuses after Barcelona's stunning Champions League semi-final loss to Liverpool on Tuesday and admitted that he is unsure over his future with the club. The La Liga champions suffered an incredible 4-0 loss at Anfield and were dumped out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage despite taking a 3-0 first-leg win.

Valverde's team gave up a 4-1 first-leg lead against Roma in the quarter-finals last season, and the manager was in no mood to pass the blame after a second epic collapse in Europe.

"How does it affect my future? I do not know, the truth is that I did not have time to think about many things, but the coach has to take responsibility," he told Movistar Plus. The Barcelona boss was also stunned by the winning goal from Liverpool, a quick corner netted by Divock Origi as Barcelona's defenders failed to react.

"An incredible goal has taken us out of the tie," he told a post-match news conference. "When I looked, the ball was already coming in. We were happy with the strategy situations because there they are a great team, but in a surprising play that I did not see, they scored.

"I did not see the play clearly, I guess we were not watching and they were ready.
Braces from Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum each scored twice to see a Liverpool side missing injured pair Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino to their win, making the comeback even more stunning for the Premier League side.

Valverde has now claimed back-to-back league titles, but the failures in the Champions League are sure to see the Spanish boss come under a great deal of scrutiny in the coming days. Asked for his message to the fans, he said: "We are very sorry.

Ajax 2 Tottenham 3 (3-3 agg, Spurs win on away goals): Lucas treble sends Spurs through

    13264580-7007517-image-m-87_1557349525269.jpg

Lucas Moura's incredible second-half hat-trick saw Tottenham snatch a 3-2 win at Ajax and a place in the Champions League final on away goals. As in last week's semi-final first leg, Erik ten Hag's side were smoothly into their work by the time inspirational captain Matthijs de Ligt headed a fifth-minute opener.

Hakim Ziyech made it 2-0 10 minutes before half-time but, in a season now steeped in implausible Champions League comebacks, Lucas' brace had the game all-square on the night before the hour.

Ziyech hit the post and Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen struck the crossbar before the irrepressible Lucas steered home Dele Alli's pass deep into stoppage time.It means an all-English final against fellow comeback kings Liverpool in Madrid on June 1 for Mauricio Pochettino's never-say-die team.

De Ligt powered home Lasse Schone's early corner but Spurs' response was initially encouraging, with Son Heung-min almost catching out Andre Onana when he hit the base of the post.Ajax appeared to have a foot in the final when Donny van de Beek and Dusan Tadic combined in slick fashion on the break, with the latter teeing up Ziyech to finish emphatically.

Onana made a stunning reaction save from Alli eight minutes into the second half but had no chance when Lucas darted beyond Schone's challenge to reduce the arrears.Fernando Llorente was then thwarted from point-blank range by Onana but, like Hugo Lloris before him, his defence could not bail him out and Lucas showcased brilliant footwork to create space and dispatch a shot in a packed penalty area.

Ziyech was inches away from his second in the 61st minute and the chaotic feel continued as De Ligt denied Lucas a quickfire hat-trick before testing Lloris at the other end.

Moroccan Ziyech hit the upright and tested Lloris one last time either side of Vertonghen heading a set piece against his former club's bar, but it was Lucas who produced the devastating final twist.

'Neymar unlikely to join Real Madrid' - Ronaldo can't see PSG deal but admits Bale could leave

Neymar is unlikely to swap Paris Saint-Germain for Real Madrid this summer, claims fellow Brazilian Ronaldo, with there still points to be proved in France by a man who has faced unfair criticism.

Each passing transfer window brings with it a fresh round of rumours regarding a South American forward.Back in 2017, he did complete a record-breaking move to France, but there has been no suggestion that he is actively seeking another.

Whispers of a return to Spain for the former Barcelona star refuse to go away, though, with a second stint at Camp Nou or a spell across the Clasico divide at the Santiago Bernabeu constantly mooted.Ronaldo is aware of the speculation, but sees little substance to it.

The World Cup-winning striker, who spent time with Barca and Real in his playing days, said at a Santander event ahead of the Champions League final: “I do not know about Neymar.

“It has been dragging on for many years. There are many rumours, but I do not think there is anything concrete with Real Madrid. “He is an incredible player that anyone would like to have. But, from what I see, he’s not on the market.”

Ronaldo added on Neymar, who has seen two productive years in France disrupted by injury and faced questions of his contribution: “In football there has always been criticism. “I have even been criticised, most unfairly. We cannot do anything about it.

“I see him as a very intelligent kid, an extraordinary talent, and wanting to have continuity again. He had two serious injuries that reduced his game time, and that opened the window of controversy to him when not being on the field. You have time to do other things and, as young people, life goes on. “The vast majority of criticism is unfair. I believe in him and I'm sure he will turn his situation around.”

While backing Neymar to silence his doubters, Ronaldo concedes that those calling for Gareth Bale to be moved out of Madrid this summer may get their wish.

He said of the Wales international, who appears to have lost the support of manager Zinedine Zidane: “I do not think there's any problem with Bale. Zizou has the right and the confidence of Real Madrid to make decisions. “It is normal planning, preparing the squad for next year. Then it's up to the player if he accepts things or not.”

As Bale has struggled, alongside a number of his team-mates this season, the current campaign has been a breakthrough one for Vinicius Junior.

The 18-year-old is another Brazilian to have suffered untimely injuries this season, but he has proved his worth on a senior stage with Madrid after seeing loan interest from Ronaldo fended off last summer.A man who is now the majority stakeholder at Real Madrid said of an exciting countryman seeking to follow in his footsteps: “I wish I could count on Vinicius in Valladolid. But of course I cannot pay his salary.

“If Madrid gives in, we would welcome him. Him, and anyone Madrid wants to give us.“He is a spectacular talent, as well as Rodrygo, who is an incredible talent. Madrid has been reinforced with very good young talents.”

The Blancos will be hoping that potential serves them well in the future, with the 2018-19 campaign having been something of a disaster for a club that has got through three managers and missed out on major silverware.

Inter in talks to appoint former Chelsea boss Conte as new head coach

Antonio Conte, who has been out of work since leaving Chelsea, will not be heading back to Juventus and is instead closing in on an agreement with Inter, Goal understands.

The 49-year-old has spent almost 12 months away from the dugout. He was relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2018 as fellow countryman Maurizio Sarri made his way to west London.

Conte left Chelsea on the back of an FA Cup triumph, and with a Premier League title to his name, but was considered to be surplus to requirements.A long-running legal battle with the Blues has dragged on since his departure, but the Italian is now preparing to return to the dugout. He has been linked with various posts over recent months and appears to be heading back to his homeland.

It was suggested at one stage that he could be set for a second spell at Juventus having previously enjoyed considerable success as a player and coach in Turin.
Questions are being asked of Massimiliano Allegri’s future at the Serie A champions but Goal understands that Conte will not be replacing him.

He has also distanced himself from an imminent appointment at Roma , despite expressing a desire to work with the capital club at some stage."Today the conditions are not there but I think one day, sooner or later, I will go to coach Roma," Conte has told Gazzetta dello Sport.

With two positions being ruled out, the path has been cleared for Inter to make their move.Goal understands the Nerazzurri are in discussions with Conte and have a lucrative contract waiting for him at San Siro.

Luciano Spalletti is currently at the helm, and has two years left on his deal, but he will be relieved of his services at the end of the season if a suitable successor can be found.Conte is understood to be intrigued by the ambition at Inter and has publicly conceded that another role in Italy would appeal to him.

He recently told Le Iene: "There is a 60% chance that I'll stay in Italy. There is a 30% chance I will go abroad and a 10% chance that I will wait [for something else]."

Van der Sar says Man Utd and Barcelona target De Ligt will move to England or Spain

Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt will move to the Premier League or La Liga, according to director Edwin van der Sar.De Ligt has become one of Europe's most sought-after players amid Ajax's fairytale run in the Champions League, which dramatically ended in the semi-finals at the hands of Tottenham.

The 19-year-old centre-back has been linked with Barcelona – who will sign team-mate Frenkie de Jong at the end of the season – Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Juventus.

Van der Sar dismissed a transfer to Serie A champions Juventus as he talked up England and Spain prior to Ajax's stunning 3-2 loss on Wednesday, which eliminated the Dutch giants 3-3 on away goals.

"I think these will be De Ligt's final games with Ajax, but I hope he goes out on a high," Van der Sar told Sky Sport Italia."He's been here since he was a child and will end up at a big club."

On De Ligt – who scored the opening goal on the night in Amsterdam midweek before Lucas Moura's hat-trick sent Ajax packing – Van der Sar added: "I think he'll go to England or Spain."The future of head coach Erik ten Hag has also been discussed amid reported interest from German champions Bayern Munich.

With the club's stunning run to the Champions League semi-final and a chance of winning the league still on the cards, the 49-year-old is likely to draw other looks as well as his star continues to rise. But Van der Sar says the club have no intention of letting their manager leave this summer.Asked about Ten Hag, Van der Sar said: "We intend to keep hold of Ten Hag, that is our intention.

"We know there will be a lot of changes within the squad, but we'd at least like to confirm the coaching staff."Ten Hag's biggest challenge may be getting the club ready for action on Sunday following Wednesday's heartbreak, with Ajax facing Utrecht in a crunch league clash.

The club will close their season against De Graafschap next Wednesday and are currently level at the top of the league with rivals PSV.

Real Madrid sign reported €1.1 billion new Adidas deal

Real Madrid has reportedly inked a massive new €1.1 billion (£946m/$1.2bn) sponsorship deal with Adidas. The German sportswear giant and the Spanish club have been working together since 1998, and Adidas confirmed that a new deal was in place on Wednesday, though the company did not offer up financial details.

The €1.1b figure is expected to be the guaranteed amount picked up by the club and is thought to be the most lucrative kit deal in football history.

Real Madrid could pick up as much as €152m (£130m/$170m) per year when merchandising is factored in, a massive raise over the €52m on their current deal and well ahead of rivals Barcelona, who are reportedly earning around €85m per year from Nike. “This agreement will help us to achieve our mission to be the best sports company in the world. It also underpins Adidas’ leadership in the football category,” company chief executive Kasper Rorsted said in a statement.

While the company did not release financial figures of the deal, they did dispute earlier reported figures that had the deal being worth as much as €1.8bn to the club.

The new deal will run through 2028, with their previous deal set to expire in 2020.Adidas has found itself in a fight for the top clubs in Europe with both Nike and Puma in recent years.

The German company reported last week that sales across Europe had fallen by 3 per cent over the first quarter of the year and have seen U.S. competitor Nike move in on several clubs.

Champions League finalists Liverpool are also reportedly in talks with Nike, potentially adding yet another top team to their brand.

Madrid are currently third in the La Liga standings and would have to win both of their closing matches and have cross-town rivals Atletico lose both to climb to second this season.

The club were also dumped out of the Champions League by Ajax following three straight titles, falling at the round-of-16 stage.Los Blancos are widely rumoured to be in for a rebuild this summer, with the influx of money likely to help in that aim.
