Messi has told me all about 'impressive' Guardiola - Aguero

    3115342_heroa.jpg

Manchester City's Sergio Aguero has revealed that Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi has told him exactly what to expect from Pep Guardiola.

The Bayern Munich coach, who worked with Messi during his time in charge of Barcelona, is set to take over from Manuel Pellegrini as Manchester City manager this summer.

And the striker has got the lowdown on his soon-to-be boss from his friend and international colleague.

“Leo has told me he is very impressive and other players with whom I have spoken have said the same,” Aguero said.“I don't know him personally so we'll see after Copa America what is going to happen. I will get to know him and he will push us all.

“I think he is a coach who will put a lot of pressure on the players and we need that. I think the arrival of him not just for me but for other players will be important for club.“There is a reason that the club invests in important players and then a coach is very important.

“We hope that Pep adapts to the club and decides how we are going to play. But it is fundamental that next year we advance a bit more.”

City secured a top-four spot with a 1-1 draw against Swansea City on Sunday but finished the campaign 15 points behind champions Leicester.

They also reached the last four of the Champions League final but were easily defeated by Real Madrid over two legs.

Guardiola is expected to revamp the squad upon taking the helm this summer, with Aguero anticipating major changes.

“We knew we had a great team but not good enough to earn (a win in the) semi-finals,” he said. “We played OK in the Champions League with exceptions like Kevin De Bruyne who scored that goal against PSG.

“But we didn't earn the classification and we knew it was an important step to make it to the semi-finals to get an idea of what we will experience next year.
“City is a great team but not up to the level of winning the Champions League.”
The draw at Swansea was Pellegrini's last game in charge of City, and Aguero was full of praise for his now former boss.

“This year we didn't advance in the Champions League but those things happen.
“I won a Premier League title with him, the balance of winnings was very good for me, he put his trust in me and for that I will always be grateful."

Rooney nets 100th Old Trafford goal

    3185142_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney scored his 100th Premier League goal at Old Trafford for Manchester United on Tuesday in the campaign closer against Bournemouth.

The club captain finished off a flowing team move to sidefoot beyond Adam Federici in the 43rd minute of the rearranged clash to give United a 1-0 half-time lead.

And the strike, Rooney's first since February 2, was the 30-year-old's 100th club goal at the Theatre of Dreams since his arrival from Everton in 2004.

Rooney is the highest-scoring United player at Old Trafford during the Premier League era, accounting for almost 10 per cent of the Red Devils' 1005 goals in league football since 1992-93.

Thierry Henry is the only player who has scored more Premier League goals at one ground - 114 at Highbury.
The England skipper has also now scored against 35 different Premier League teams thanks to his first ever goal against Eddie Howe's Bournemouth side.

:love:Manchester United 3-1 AFC Bournemouth: Milestone man Rooney inspires sign-off win

    3185142_heroa.jpg

Wayne Rooney netted his 100th Premier League goal at Old Trafford before Marcus Rashford celebrated his England call-up by scoring during a 3-1 win in the re-arranged end-of-season fixture with AFC Bournemouth.

The sides reconvened two days on from their scheduled final-day clash being postponed when a suspicious package was found inside the stadium, prompting its evacuation.

Manchester City's 1-1 draw at Swansea City on Sunday ended United's hopes of beating their neighbours to fourth place and Champions League football next season – barring the fanciful notion of a 19-0 outcome in favour of Louis van Gaal's men against the Cherries. That prospect was certainly far removed from the reality of a dour opening period, illuminated only be a wonderful team goal that allowed Rooney to score for the first time in 10 matches across all competitions.

Teenage striker Rashford, a day after being named in Roy Hodgson's preliminary Euro 2016 squad, played a classy role in the build-up to the opener and was on target himself with 16 minutes remaining.

Substitute Ashley Young made it 3-0, with Rooney the architect from midfield, before a Chris Smalling own goal secured a consolation strike for Bournemouth, who end their debut Premier League season in 16th position.

Despite being forced to play closer to Saturday's FA Cup final against Crystal Palace than anticipated, Van Gaal stuck with the XI he named for the abandoned weekend encounter.

There was one alteration from Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe, with Dan Gosling replacing Republic of Ireland midfielder Harry Arter.Somewhat understandably, the match badly lacked urgency as barely a chance of note arrived during the opening half hour.

Michael Carrick, possibly playing in United colours at Old Trafford for the final time as his contract ticks down, stretched to get on the end of Rooney's 32nd-minute free-kick but could not divert the ball past visiting goalkeeper Adam Federici. Two minutes before half-time the deadlock was broken and in a style out of keeping with what came before.

Anthony Martial darted in field from the left and exchanged passes with Juan Mata to break into the Bournemouth box, where his low cross was deftly dummied by Rashford for Rooney to reach his landmark with a first goal since February 2.

Steve Cook was fortunate not to be penalised for a clumsy challenge on Mata inside the Bournemouth box before Carrick clattered a superb long-range strike against the crossbar in the 53rd minute.United had belatedly located a degree of swagger and Federici tipped acrobatically over from Antonio Valencia in the 60th minute after Mata and Jesse Lingard went close in quick succession.

Rashford's trickery was an increasingly prominent feature and he clinically dispatched Valencia's knockdown from Rooney's raking pass for an eighth goal of the campaign.

Young had only been on the field for three minutes when he was the beneficiary of another sumptuous Rooney pass before the unfortunate Smalling diverted Max Gradel's shot past David de Gea to deny the United goalkeeper the Premier League Golden Gloves award.

Victory could not spare Van Gaal from a hail of boos at the start of his end-of-season address on the field, where he attempted to rally the crowd with the prospect of an FA Cup win that might not be enough to save his job.

Cech wins Premier League Golden Glove

    petr-cech-arsenal_3wsr2e9daf871lx4r291es8m0.jpg

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has won the Premier League Golden Glove for the most clean sheets, with 16 shut-outs over the course of the season.

The Gunners shot-stopper had Chris Smalling to thank for the prize, with the Manchester United defender netting a late own goal in the club's 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday, ending David de Gea's hopes of keeping a shut out and claiming the gong.

De Gea ended the season with 15 clean sheets in the Premier League, level with Manchester City's Joe Hart and Leicester City's Kasper Schmeichel.

Cech, meanwhile, has continued a good week, following Arsenal's rise above Tottenham to second place in the Premier League on the final day of the season.

Manchester United limp to Premier League finishing line with another disjointed Van Gaal display

    3185472_heroa.jpg

It’s not unusual for Manchester United to struggle at Old Trafford under Louis van Gaal, and if Tuesday’s win over Bournemouth proves to be the final time he manages the Red Devils at the Theatre of Dreams, it was certainly an apt way to go out.

Though the circumstances of the rearranged fixture and Manchester City’s draw on Sunday sucked some life out of the match, supporters would have been excused for thinking their team might put on a show before the campaign draws to a close.Van Gaal even promised as much beforehand, saying that he picked a full-strength side “because we also have to entertain our fans.”

If anything has become clear over the past two seasons, however, is that the veteran Dutch coach’s idea of entertainment is very different from those who were used to cheering on Sir Alex Ferguson’s swashbuckling serial title winners. Slow passing and a reluctance to leave themselves exposed in defence has become the norm for those cheering on the 20-time English champions.

And it was those characteristics that were clearly on show during what was frankly a forgettable end to a disappointing campaign. Some fans dared to dream that a 19-goal win that would catapult them above City into fourth might just come to pass, but it soon became clear Van Gaal was not going to shift away from his philosophy even in a match where even a defeat going for a remarkable win would be deemed acceptable.

Instead his side huffed and puffed as they failed to register a shot on target until Wayne Rooney opened the deadlock on the 43rd minute. The United captain’s 100th Premier League goal at Old Trafford was certainly a thing of beauty as Anthony Martial, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford combined to lay the strike on a plate for Rooney, but it is the type of move which has been inconspicuous in its absence from much of United’s play this season.

With an FA Cup final to play in just four days’ time it is perhaps forgivable for United’s not to move out of second gear and risk their chance of representing the club at Wembley, though there performance will be giving Alan Pardew few sleepless nights. Though the hosts improved in the second half and deservedly made it 2-0 as Rashford celebrated his first England call-up with an angled finish and Ashley Young put some gloss on the result, it was not the blistering football that used to give opposition managers nightmares.

The Crystal Palace boss is unlikely to have seen anything from United that he was not expecting to come up against on Saturday, and though the Eagles will certainly start as underdogs, they are unlikely to be fazed by this United team given their struggles this term.

Whether this does in fact go down as the final time Van Gaal takes charge of the home side at Old Trafford remains to be seen. A lack of Champions League football has left him in a vulnerable position, and though winning a first trophy in three seasons might be seen as progress by some, the truth is this United side has gone backwards since last term. Youngsters like Rashford and Martial certainly look to have bright futures, but would they be able to thrive far more under a more adventurous coach? It is a question Ed Woodward and the club’s hierarchy will be forced to weigh up in the coming days.

For now, though, United can concentrate on attempting to win a trophy they have not lifted since 2004. It may well be the final time we see Van Gaal in English football. A repeat performance from Tuesday evening would only increase that possibility.

Van Gaal booed as he vows to bring FA Cup back to Old Trafford

    3185662_heroa.jpg

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was booed at the beginning and end of his speech marking the club's final home game of the season.

The Dutchman took to the pitch following the 3-1 win over Bournemouth to give the traditional address that follows the final Old Trafford game of each campaign but was greeted by ripples of derision and a smattering of applause.

Despite the mixed reception, Van Gaal thanked the fans for their support throughout the season and vowed to bring the FA Cup back to Old Trafford, ahead of the final with Crystal Palace on Saturday.

"Thank you for your unconditional support. Wherever we've played, you've never let us down," the Man United boss said."Now, we want to bring the FA Cup home to you. You deserve it. Thank you!"

Van Gaal: Manchester United fans expect too much

    3185662_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal claims the expectation levels from Manchester United fans are too high.

The Red Devils sealed a 3-1 win in their final Premier League game of the season against Bournemouth on Tuesday but have missed out on Champions League football.

Van Gaal, who was booed by some fans as he addressed the supporters after the final whistle at Old Trafford, could still deliver the FA Cup if he guides his side to victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley this Saturday.

But the Dutchman claims aiming for the title this season was not a realistic target.

“Of course, because I’ve said the expectation is very high - the fans are expecting a lot, but I think these expectations are much too high,” Van Gaal told Sky Sports.

“We are a team in transition, as I said when I started here at Manchester United, but maybe I need to bring over the message much clearer than I’ve done.”

Rooney expects to play up front for England

    wayne-rooney-cropped_dpwj8ahwici81cjuhw9m9i4uo.jpg

Wayne Rooney is readying himself for a midfield future at Manchester United but still expects to be selected as a forward for England at Euro 2016.

Rooney netted his 100th Premier League goal at Old Trafford to set United on their way to a 3-1 victory in their re-arranged final match of the league season against Bournemouth.

The 30-year-old timed a run from his deeper position perfectly to break the deadlock after Marcus Rashford dummied Anthony Martial's 43rd-minute cross.
Rashford celebrated his call into England's provisional squad for Euro 2016 with a goal 16 minutes from time and substitute Ashley Young scored a late third – both strikes coming after sumptuous passes from Rooney.

The form of Tottenham's Harry Kane and Leicester City's Jamie Vardy has led to questions over whether England's record goalscorer should start in attack for Roy Hodgson's side in France next month.

Rooney suggested he does not have a long-term future in the position during a post-match interview with Sky Sports, but did insist he believes he will be considered as an attacker by Roy Hodgson for the tournament in France."Sometimes you have to make choices in your career and at the minute it's probably better for me to play deeper," he said.

"Now, obviously, that's a bit different with England because I think I'll still be the striker with England."Certainly after that, for next season [midfield] is where I see myself playing."

Rashford is the latest out-and-out attacking option to come into the England fold and Rooney felt his teenage team-mate's contribution against Bournemouth gave ample demonstration of his talents."I saw [the first goal] developing from deeper and it was a great dummy from Marcus for me to finish it," the captain said.

"He's a young lad but you've seen again today, he's scored a fantastic goal.
"He's got to work hard over the next couple of weeks to try and convince Roy to take him"If he does well in that then I'm sure Roy will have no problems putting him in the 23."

'Everton want £65m for Lukaku and he will be sold before Euro 2016'

    2921752_heroa.jpg

Romelu Lukaku’s father claims Everton want £65 million for Romelu Lukaku and believes the striker will be sold before Euro 2016.

The Belgium international has scored 25 goals in 46 appearances for Everton this season and has been linked with a host of clubs including Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Juventus.

Lukaku has already stated his desire to play for a Champions League club next season and his father now claims that an Everton exit is close.

“Everton are asking around £65m for Rom. I think a transfer will be done before the Euros,” Roger Lukaku told Humo.

“Romelu will decide his future, but agents have the last word most of the time. I hope and I think Mino Raiola is an honest man.

“Now, with Romelu it will be quickly arranged. Has the transfer has been sorted? Almost. I think it will be in place before the European Championship.
“At the moment I think Manchester United or Bayern Munich are most suitable for him, especially Bayern.

“He won't go to Italy, because they keep it closed at the back, too difficult for an attacker.

“What is certain, to continue to make progress, he needs to change clubs, but we are mainly engaged in making the right choice.”
