OFFICIAL: Manchester United confirm Van Gaal sacking

    3211972_heroa.jpg

Manchester United have confirmed that manager Louis van Gaal has been sacked, paving the way for Jose Mourinho to take charge at Old Trafford.

Speculation had been rife for several months that the Dutchman would depart the Red Devils, and though he claimed the FA Cup with a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace after extra time, his failure to qualify for the Champions League ultimately proved his undoing.

Goal learned earlier on Monday that Van Gaal had been informed of the decision, with final confirmation following later from the Premier League giants.

"I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries)," executive vice-chairman Edward Woodward said in a statement published by United on their official website.

"He has behaved with great professionalism and dignity throughout his time here. He leaves us with a legacy of having given several young players the confidence to show their ability on the highest stage.

"Everyone at the club wishes him all the best in the future."

Van Gaal joined the Red Devils ahead of the 2014-15 campaign, after David Moyes was removed from the post following hus one-year stint as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement.

The ex-Barcelona boss' first term ended with United regaining a place in the Champions League, but criticisms mounted due to a lack of goals and some erratic results at Old Trafford.

The club were then booted out of the Champions League at the group stage, with tilts at the Europa League and a final-four finish also ending in failure in 2015-16.

IN FULL: Van Gaal's statement after Manchester United sacking

    3185662_heroa.jpg

Louis van Gaal claims he has never been so well supported as a manager after being sacked by Manchester United.

United confirmed the Dutchman's exit on Monday evening, two days after he guided the club to success in the FA Cup final.

But failure to secure Champions League football, twinned with an uninspiring brand of football, has led to Van Gaal's departure.

In a statement released alongside confirmation of his sacking, Van Gaal praised the club and claims the foundations are in place for the team to be a success.

It has been an honour to manage such a magnificent club as Manchester United FC, and in doing so, I have fulfilled a long-held ambition.

I am immensely proud to have helped United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club's history. I have been privileged during my management career to have won 20 trophies but winning the FA Cup, which is steeped in so much history, will always be one of the most special achievements of my career.

I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan. I believe that the foundations are firmly in place to enable the club to move forward and achieve even greater success.

I hope that winning the FA Cup will give the club a platform to build upon next season to restore the success that this passionate set of fans desire.
Having managed in Holland, Spain and Germany, I had always hoped for the opportunity to manage in English football and be part of English culture. Both of these experiences have lived up to expectations and been fantastic.

I thank my players and wish them well for next season. It has been a pleasure to work with them and it has been particularly rewarding to see so many young players take their chance to break into the first team and excel. I look forward to watching the continued development of these young players next season.

Thank you to the owners and board of Manchester United for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club.

I would also like to express my gratitude to the amazing United supporters. They are truly the best fans in the world.

I am indebted to my support and coaching staff, who have given me their all during their time at the club.

I am deeply grateful to each and every member of the club’s staff - the sports science team, the medical team, the kit and laundry department, club administration, the press office, the manager's team, the Academy team, ground staff and the catering team, both at Old Trafford stadium and Carrington training ground, all of whom have given me their unwavering support in my time at United. Never in my 25 years as a manager have I been so well supported in my role.

Finally, my special thanks go to Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton for always making me and my family feel so welcome throughout my time as Manchester United manager.

Blind: I wasn't told about Van Gaal's sacking

    3213952_heroa.jpg

Daley Blind insists he was not told that Manchester United had sacked Louis van Gaal before the club's confirmation on Monday evening.

Van Gaal guided the club to victory in the FA Cup on Saturday but failure to secure Champions League football, coupled with the team’s uninspiring playing style, has led to the Dutchman’s dismissal.

But Blind, who has worked under Van Gaal at United and the Netherlands national side, insists he kept in the dark over the managerial change at Old Trafford and says there were no signs to suggest the 64-year-old would be leaving after Saturday's final at Wembley.

“I follow the news just like you,” said Blind, who was speaking shortly before Van Gaal's sacking on Monday evening.

“The media have him sacked him 82 times this season I believe. It could be that they are right once.

“But Manchester United have no official statement brought out. And the training I have looked on my phone. I was not told anything.

“I would be sorry if it is so. I have worked fine with him. Like the other players.

“It was a tough season but we won the FA Cup together. Then we said goodbye to each other as if we were meeting again after the summer for another season. Now it's wait and see if that happens.”

FIFA sacks deputy secretary general Kattner

    markuskattner-cropped_12qub6jqbb9pj1vi3rj6ou8cy6.jpg

Deputy secretary general Markus Kattner has been sacked by FIFA following "breaches of his fiduciary responsibilities".

It has been reported that the German was aware of the "disloyal payment" made by then-president Sepp Blatter to Michel Platini in 2011 which resulted in the pair being banned from all football-related activity for six years – the Frenchman's suspension has since been reduced to four following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Kattner joined FIFA as the finance director in 2003 and had been serving as acting secretary general since January after Jerome Valcke was hit with a 12-year ban after FIFA's Ethics Committee found him guilty of numerous acts of misconduct.

However, Kattner has now been dismissed by world football's governing body after an internal investigation uncovered wrongdoing on his part."FIFA's deputy secretary general Markus Kattner has been dismissed from his position effective immediately," an official statement read."FIFA's internal investigation uncovered breaches of his fiduciary responsibilities in connection with his employment contract."

Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura was announced as the next secretary general at the 66th FIFA Congress this month, assuming the role in June.

Danny Blind hits out at Manchester United over Van Gaal sacking

    3196262_heroa.jpg

Netherlands boss Danny Blind has criticised Manchester United over the sacking of Louis van Gaal.

Confirmation of the Dutchman’s departure was announced on Monday evening after 48 hours of intense speculation.

Goal understands that Van Gaal was stunned by the news of his sacking, and the 64-year-old was under the impression that he would be allowed to see out the final year of his contract.

Shortly before news of Van Gaal’s dismissal was confirmed, Daley Blind had claimed that he and the United squad were in the dark over the manager’s future, but following his sacking, the defender’s father admits the club handled the situation poorly.

“I’m closer to the situation than many other people and I can tell you that his departure came as a surprise. I feel for him. He doesn’t deserve this,” said Blind.

“I’ve worked with him for so many years. I played under him for years at Ajax, I was his captain, I was his assistant at the last World Cup. He’s a great coach.

“We all know that, as a manager, you will face the sack at some stage in your career. It happens to every manager.

“In this case I find it very disappointing. I know in which way this sacking was done and it’s not the way it should go.”

'Only Neymar can match Rashford's skills' - Nevin

    3187072_heroa.jpg

Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin has heaped praise on Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford and compared his skills to Neymar.

Teenager Rashford has enjoyed a rapid rise to the top since making his United debut in February and now finds himself in England's preliminary squad ahead of Euro 2016.Nevin believes some of the fancy footwork being shown by the 18-year-old can only be matched in the world game by Barcelona star Neymar.

And the ex-Scotland international is under the impression Rashford can continue to impress moving forward, though his future may not necessarily as the spearhead of an attacking formation.

"What really jumped out at me was in the last game of the season, he was out on the right-hand side and did a dummy that was like a flick." he told BBC Radio Five Live."The only other player I know that can do that is Neymar. It was stunning.

"When you watch a guy three or four times, and we’ve had this chat about Riyad Mahrez at the start of the season when I thought we needed to watch out for him, I feel the same way about him.

"There’s an intelligence about him, and he’s not trying it all at the same time. He’s not doing every trick in the book. There’s a lot to come from this kid, and I don’t necessarily think it’s all going to be as a centre-forward."

:yes:Manchester United kids are Van Gaal's legacy - Ferdinand

    rashford-van-gaal-cropped_ftm5wr3exj461ojewwefbh6qu.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand feels the rise to prominence of youngsters such as Marcus Rashford will stand as Louis van Gaal's Old Trafford legacy.

The Dutchman was sacked on Monday, having failed to qualify for the Champions League, but Ferdinand is adamant the Van Gaal era was not all bad news for United.

Saturday's FA Cup win was United's first for 12 years, while Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are among a host of academy graduates to impress in the first team under Van Gaal.

"Van Gaal's unwavering belief in his methods is something to respect in many ways, but it was also part of his undoing," Ferdinand wrote on his official Facebook page.

"Success (winning the league or Champions League) is what Manchester United demands, and added to that an attacking, quick, aggressive and imaginative style of football. "Unfortunately Van Gaal failed to bring either of those elements to the club.

"He is huge personality who won an FA cup, keeping up his habit of winning trophies everywhere he has been, but his ‪Manchester United‬ legacy will be the introduction of the players from the academy like Rashford, Lingard, Fosu-Mensah and so on.

"Giving kids and opportunity to play was in keeping with the history of the club."

Woodward's comments after Van Gaal's arrival at Manchester United come back to haunt him

    2987912_heroa.jpg

Ed Woodward’s comments about Louis van Gaal following the Dutchman’s arrival at Manchester United have come back to haunt him.

Van Gaal was sacked by United on Monday after victory in the FA Cup final on Saturday was not deemed enough to warrant a third season at Old Trafford.

And during his two campaigns in the Premier League, Van Gaal failed to deliver on his reputation of playing fast, attacking football.

And that’s exactly the style Woodward claimed Van Gaal would deliver after a turbulent 10 months under David Moyes saw the club finish seventh in the table.

"He's got incredible energy and very importantly he likes attacking football," said Woodward back in July 2014.

"If you remember the Barcelona team he managed in the late 90s, they played incredible, attacking football, and those games we had against them in 98/99, that's the kind of football Manchester United fans love. It's part of our DNA."

Woodward will be hoping it’s third time lucky with Jose Mourinho.

Van Gaal praised for his 'excellent work' at Manchester United by Ed Woodward

    3147492_heroa.jpg

Manchester United's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has praised Louis van Gaal for his "excellent work" at the club following the Dutchman's sacking on Monday evening.

Van Gaal leaves United after winning the FA Cup on Saturday but failure to secure Champions League football, along with an unattractive playing style, has led to the 64-year-old's exit.

Goal understands that Van Gaal was told of his departure on Monday morning and was shocked to learn of his fate.

But in a statement released alongside Van Gaal's sacking, Woodward hailed the Dutchman's "professionalism".

"I would like to thank Louis and his staff for their excellent work in the past two years culminating in winning a record-equalling 12th FA Cup for the club (and securing him a title in four different countries)," Woodward affirmed.

Koke: Why would I want to leave Atletico?

    koke-atletico-madrid_6mq796pbbhbo1dm6uahh9maow.jpg

Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke has reiterated his desire to remain with the Spanish giants amid speculation linking him to the Premier League.

Koke has emerged as a reported target for incoming Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, while Jose Mourinho - expected to be announced as the new Manchester United manager in the coming days - is said to be an admirer of the 24-year-old.

The central midfielder has been a crucial part of Diego Simeone's Atletico side, having made over 250 appearances for the Spanish club since his promotion from the youth set-up in 2009. And Koke insists he wants to stay in Madrid, admitting money is no factor in any potential move.

"To be an Atleti player is the best there is. You always have to be Atleti, in the good times and in the bad," the Spain international said on Onda Cero's Al Primer Toque.

"Atleti is special. It is a family, everyone supports one another. "I am not looking for more money, I am happy where I am, I am in my home. "I am playing for the team that has looked after me since I was very little. A lot of times you don't move for money. "For a hundred and something years Atletico Madrid has been among the best.

"How can I leave? Why would I want to lose all of this?"Koke and Co. are preparing to face bitter rivals Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League on Saturday, a rematch of the 2014 decider in which the latter prevailed 4-1 after extra time.

"We know that to play in the final of the Champions League throughout your career is something incredible, and we will play in two and truthfully it is very emotional," Koke added.

"[Madrid] were champions two years and nobody is going to take that away from them. This is a new opportunity that all Atletico players want to take with all the enthusiasm in the world."

Europa League Mourinho's best hope for United trophy - Sheringham

    jose-mourinho-cropped_sqeif38k29mz1idlb9e1sa2q8.jpg

Jose Mourinho's best hope for silverware with Manchester United will be in the Europa League next season, according to former striker Teddy Sheringham.United confirmed the departure of Louis van Gaal on Monday and are expected to appoint former Chelsea boss Mourinho as manager this week.

Van Gaal won the FA Cup final in his final game in charge but failed to secure qualification for the Champions League, meaning United will spend next season in Europe's secondary tournament.

And Sheringham, who won the treble under Alex Ferguson in 1999, says a focus on that competition will be Mourinho's safest bet to deliver early success at Old Trafford.

"It'll be tough for Mourinho to win a trophy in his first season and the Europa League title is probably the best hope," he said, as quoted by The Mirror."The league stages of the competition aren't too hard, so United should fly through that while he's assessing his squad and figuring out his desired starting line-up.

"He'll also have the chance in January to dip back into the transfer market if necessary and hopefully towards the latter part of the season United will be hitting top gear."

Sheringham believes Mourinho's experience of winning Premier League titles with Chelsea will stand him in good stead, but he expects United to fall short of challenging for Leicester City's crown in 2016-17."The Premier League may be a step too far in his first season, based on United's performances this year, but you never know," he said.

"If he can get things rolling and clicking very quickly then those odds will tumble.Mourinho is proven. He knows what it takes to win the league, giving him the edge over Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, Antonio Conte at Chelsea and Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp – but it'll be very difficult."

Van Gaal paid the price for inconsistent results and a refusal to change his much-maligned style of play, but Sheringham expects Mourinho to be more willing to embrace United's demands for attacking football."Van Gaal has not lived up to expectations. The legacy of Sir Alex Ferguson might be making it very difficult for other managers to come in after him at Old Trafford and compete," he added. "Now it's not just about winning games, it's about winning them in style.

"He [Mourinho] has a winning reputation and more than anything, United have to get back to winning ways – yet it has to be done with style. Mourinho has been around English football long enough to understand that.

"He knows what people expect. That winning mentality is there for all to see, but he'll be clever enough to change his philosophy and get into the Manchester United mould.

I'll be happy if we make Euro 2016 semi-finals - Del Bosque

    vicentedelbosque-cropped_1qdzbhlroljyqzl8pk87ve3tm.jpg

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque admits he would be pleased if his side only reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, even if some people would label a trophy-less campaign a failure.

Del Bosque's charges go into next month's Euros as back-to-back winners, having triumphed in 2008 against Germany and then in 2012 against Italy.

However, the 65-year-old said on Friday his 23-man squad was not "perfect" and has now gone on to state a last-four finish would be an acceptable achievement in his opinion.Speaking on El partido de las 12 via network COPE, Del Bosque said: "If we make the semi-finals I would be happy, I'm telling you the truth.

"Even though some would consider not winning it a failure."What I do not want is for us to get nervous and despair to creep in. "Unrest is a bad counsellor."

On his squad, Del Bosque added: "In these past eight years we have taken many lists and they have not really been disputed."This one, maybe, has been the most talked about. We have tried to take the best list possible, for the good of the team.

"We have not given anyone any awards, we just want to take the best we could."
