Manchester United's Dembele interest no concern for Rodgers

    moussadembele-cropped_1gsyt1dk8d6u616sw6roilatne.jpg

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is confident of fighting off reported interest in Moussa Dembele from Manchester United.

France Under-21 striker Dembele has impressed since joining Celtic from Fulham, scoring seven goals in 11 Scottish Premiership games, adding five Champions League strikes - including a brace in September's thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City.

Dembele was linked with Tottenham before moving to Scotland, and United reportedly sent scouts to watch him on international duty this week.

Nevertheless, Rodgers is confident Dembele will stay at the Scottish champions for the foreseeable future."Him and his agent, they want to learn and they want to develop," Rodgers told talkSPORT.

"They could have gone to a number of clubs in the summer and got way, way more money than up here. But he wants to try and do it the right way.

"He wants to get experiences at a big club, learn, develop and then there probably will be a time when he will move on. But he signed a four-year deal here and he is only a few months into it.

"He has only really just come in, he loves it here. It is a huge club, he gets idolised here, he is playing Champions League football and he is really, really enjoying this process of learning and playing for a big club.

"I am sure at some point later down the line it may happen, but it is certainly not something we are looking at now."

Gnabry open to Bayern Munich move

    serge-gnabry-cropped_qha9q1c08hom18348uc9ii5o8.jpg

Werder Bremen attacker Serge Gnabry has welcomed reports linking him with a move to Bayern Munich.

The Germany international has been one of the revelations of the Bundesliga season following his move from Arsenal and scored a hat-trick on his senior Germany debut against San Marino last week.

Bayern are believed to be keeping a close eye on the winger's development, with reports suggesting they have an option to buy him at the end of the season.

Gnabry would face stiff competition for a place in the starting XI at the Allianz Arena, but he would be up for the fight.

"I could definitely see myself at Bayern Munich," Gnabry told reporters."I am the kind of player who likes a challenge."Bayern defender Jerome Boateng, meanwhile, would welcome the 21-year-old with open arms if he were to make the move.

"Gnabry has developed superbly, he is an amazing player," Boateng said at a news conference.

"I think he has what it takes to play for Bayern. I hope he will stay healthy, he has the potential to achieve anything."

    Benzema resumes Real Madrid training

    karim-benzema-cropped_15lzm1lz2s3t811tn36p79g12c.jpg

Karim Benzema has resumed training after a spell on the sidelines with a muscular injury as Real Madrid prepare to take on Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

The Frenchman missed Madrid's last game before the international break - a 3-0 La Liga win over Leganes - and there were doubts over whether he would be fit in time to face Atletico.

Benzema had to sit out Tuesday and Wednesday's training sessions due to the issue, but he could now feature in this weekend's derby after joining his team-mates for Thursday's practice.

The 28-year-old's return to regular training will come as a huge boost to head coach Zinedine Zidane after fellow striker Alvaro Morata suffered a hamstring problem that could keep him out for up to a month.Benzema has netted five goals in 13 appearances in all competitions for Madrid this term.

He scored his side's only goal when Madrid held out for a 1-1 draw with Atletico at the Vicente Calderon last season.

Griezmann trains as Atletico step up derby preparations

    antoinegriezmann-cropped_vsnpbn331tma1g1sowk0laska.jpg

Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann eased fears over his fitness ahead of Saturday's derby against Real Madrid by playing a full part in training on Thursday.

The Ballon d'Or nominee pulled out of France's 0-0 friendly draw against Ivory Coast this week after sustaining a blow to his left foot during last Friday's 2-1 World Cup qualifying triumph over Sweden.

X-rays confirmed Griezmann did not suffer a broken bone and Atletico defender Juanfran told Partidazo COPE that the 25-year-old was confident of facing Real at the Vicente Calderon.

It appears he will be as good as his word after joining Juanfran and his other team-mates for work with and without the ball on Thursday evening.

Griezmann has scored eight times in 14 appearances across all competitions for Atletico this season and netted the only goal as Diego Simeone's men claimed a 1-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeu last season.

Rodgers: I was Balotelli's worst ever coach

    brendanrodgersmariobalotelli-cropped_xa7h03acg9j6134zq2wcwvatt.jpg

Brendan Rodgers believes Mario Balotelli was right to brand him the worst coach he has worked under during his colourful career.

Rodgers brought Balotelli to Liverpool from AC Milan in August 2014 but the Italy international rarely got close to his best form and returned to San Siro on loan after a season and a solitary Premier League goal for the Anfield club.

Rodgers is now in charge of Celtic and, as Balotelli finds himself back among the goals at Nice in Ligue 1, he hopes the 26-year-old former Manchester City and Inter star might still realise his potential.

Asked about the striker's comments, Rodgers told talkSPORT: "He was probably absolutely spot on. I just couldn’t really connect with Mario.

"He was one that came in very late in the window. It was a gamble taken from a club perspective."It was [a transfer] where, he's a big talent, he'll come in and develop, he's got all the tools."On the field, he tried his best. But yeah, it certainly wasn’t something that worked out as everyone would like.

"If you sit with him in the office, he's a good guy. If he could ever match that intensity with his talent, then he'd be one of the best players in the world.

"But now I hope he's got a club, that might be a final chance over in France. But hopefully it can work out for him."Balotelli has seven goals in nine appearances for Nice since joining on a free transfer from Liverpool, while Rodgers' Celtic are 10 points clear of Aberdeen at the top of the Scotish Premiership table ahead of Friday's trip to Kilmarnock.

If Wenger is outdated, then Mourinho is a tactical dinosaur!

    3sckffgvm86t1b5hvzc2lstr4.png

“Eight years without silverware, that's failure. He's a specialist in failure. If I do that at Chelsea, eight years, I leave and don't come back."Amidst one of football’s bitterest managerial rivalries, Jose Mourinho has taken particular pleasure in highlighting just how appalling Arsene Wenger’s trophy drought is.

Indeed, Mourinho was absolutely right in 2014 when he delivered that most vicious put-down – and he is still right today ahead of Saturday's big Premier League clash at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Arsenal. It is absolute madness that a club the size of Arsenal still employ a manager who has consistently failed for so long.

It is now 12-and-a-half years since Wenger won the Premier League – it would take a brave man to bet against the trend continuing this term – while the Frenchman’s Champions League record is utterly embarrassing. Arsenal have been knocked out of the European Cup at the last-16 stage for six successive seasons, and have won just eight knockout ties in the competition in total since Wenger took over 20 years ago. There can be no denying that the main reason Wenger has struggled so much in the major competitions over the last decade is because he is tactically outdated.

His preoccupation with playing football 'the right way' has not been conducive to success. In an age where technology, video and data analysis make it much easier to study opponents, Wenger’s weaknesses can be identified and ruthlessly exposed.

Teams today need to be tactically flexible and contain technical, physical and mental elements. Arsenal have lacked the last two qualities ever since Patrick Vieira, Sol Campbell and the last remnants of George Graham’s great back four either departed or retired.

For most of his reign, Wenger has been stubbornly one-dimensional and has steadfastly refused to change his philosophy – both before and during games – to counter the style of an adversary. His teams have almost always played open, attacking, expansive football, making it very easy for top coaches to outmanoeuvre the Frenchman.

Only one season, in 2005-06, did Wenger truly abandon his principles. It’s no coincidence that, fielding a conservative 4-5-1 with Thierry Henry as the lone frontman, Arsenal made it all the way to the Champions League final. They defeated the Madrid Galacticos and a Juventus team that contained seven of the 2006 World Cup finalists on the way to a heart-breaking late defeat to Barcelona in Paris.

There have been signs over the last 18 months, though, that Wenger is sometimes willing to surrender his obsession with possession and utilise a more modern or counter-attacking game – sitting the defensive line deeper before launching a total press in midfield and transitioning via the pace of Alexis Sanchez, Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott. The wins last year over Manchester City and Bayern Munich (with just 30% possession) are good examples of this tactic bearing fruit.

Whether this mini-awakening will be enough for Wenger to win the Premier League again or go deep in the Champions League is doubtful given the other shortcomings, but it does at least show that the Frenchman is not completely immovable in his outlook.Which is more than can be said about his great adversary. For if Wenger is outdated, then right now Mourinho is a tactical dinosaur.

Since taking over Real Madrid in 2010, Mourinho has not evolved at all in a strategic sense. During his three years at the Santiago Bernabeu, his second spell at Chelsea and since joining Manchester United, he has almost always deployed his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation.

However, this is a system that - despite emerging as the most popular and innovative formation of the new millennium – is now out of fashion among the continental elite. None of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain or Juventus use it. Mourinho’s permanent successor at Chelsea quickly abandoned it in favour of a 3-4-3 that has yielded five straight wins with 16 goals scored and none conceded.

Pep Guardiola’s formation at Manchester City, a 4-1-4-1 on paper, is virtually impossible to decipher in reality. To the Catalan, there is no such thing as a set formation, it is all about pressing and interpreting space depending on the scenario and where the ball and opponents are. Then it is about exploiting this space by creating ‘passing lanes’ to provide multiple channels of attack in each move."Organised chaos" is how his tactics were brilliantly described to Goal by Darmstadt defender Luca Caldirola after Pep’s Bayern played 99 straight games under him with a different starting XI.

Wenger also still employs an outdated 4-2-3-1 system but his team is far less rigid and predictable than Mourinho’s Manchester United, whose players rarely leave their set positions. Compare the effortless interchange in attack of the likes of Alexis, Iwobi and Mesut Ozil to the static and set Zlatan Ibrahimovic. While Wenger’s offensive play is fluid and imaginative, Mourinho’s provides clear reference points for defenders. A big hulking target man like Zlatan or Didier Drogba has been a favourite of Mourinho for most of his career, but this type of physical striker may also be going out of fashion.

Barcelona employ a trio of small, skilful, switching forwards. Manchester City have the pint-sized Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling and David Silva buzzing around. Juventus and Atletico are building their two-man attacks around the tiny but incredibly talented Paulo Dybala and Antoine Griezmann, respectively. The Mourinho lone striker is dying.

The best tacticians are also wise enough to adapt their formation to the players they have available, just like Conte did at Juventus when he ditched his favoured 4-2-4 for a 3-5-2 that made use of the brilliant BBC backline of Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. He is now doing the same at Chelsea, with David Luiz reaping the rewards in the sweeper role.

Mourinho is persisting with a 4-2-3-1 system at United that is clearly incompatible tactically with his team’s best player – and world record €105 million summer signing – Paul Pogba. The Frenchman illustrated at Euro 2016 that he is not a holding midfielder. Not only does he lack the discipline, positioning and tackling ability for such a role but he is also completely wasted there given his incredible technical talents. As also illustrated at Juventus, he neither possesses the natural playmaking or short-range passing skills to be a No.10.As he has said himself, Pogba needs to play on the left of a three-man midfield.

The 4-3-3 is the obvious system to get the best out of both the Paris-native and an Ibrahimovic flanked either side in attack by Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford. Given Mourinho recently dropped the declining Wayne Rooney and has shown little interest in fielding Henrikh Mkhitaryan – two players only suited to the No.10 position in the 4-2-3-1 – it makes no sense for the Portuguese to continue with his current setup.

It is no coincidence that in the last six years Mourinho has won six trophies (two of these Supercups and none of them European titles), compared to the 17 he bagged in the seven years prior – which comprised of six league championships, two Champions Leagues and a Uefa Cup.

It was already clear at the end of his Chelsea reign that Mourinho’s version of the 4-2-3-1 needed to be rebranded but he has made no attempt to do that at Manchester United – and it is a natural consequence that he has endured such a difficult start to his reign at Old Trafford.

For a manager who once labelled Sam Allardyce’s tactics as “football from the 19th century”, it is about time an outdated Mourinho got out of the prehistoric age before he also becomes a “specialist in failure”.

Ribery: I must control temper against Dortmund

    franck-ribery-cropped_5ejsafyn5ouv1hgmnllyq3ybi.jpg

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery admits he must stay in control of his temper when the Bundesliga leaders face Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

The experienced former France international has been scrutinised for much of this season for failing to keep his frustrations in check.

Head coach Carlo Ancelotti criticised Ribery for clashing with Felipe Melo in pre-season against Inter, while similar incidents involving Hamburg's Nicolai Muller and Dortmund youngster Felix Passlack have prompted further questions over his temperament. And the 33-year-old concedes that he will need to toe the line when the champions meet Thomas Tuchel's side at Signal Iduna Park."A match against Dortmund is always emotional," he told TZ. "But that's no problem. I know I have to control myself in these situations.

"The match is important, the atmosphere is tense and the fans want to see our best performance. You have to try and not let yourself to be bothered by that too much.

"It is very, very important for us. A match against Dortmund is like a derby - the pressure is always huge."Bayern issued a denial on Thursday after it was claimed that Ribery had agreed a new contract to keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2018.

The former Marseille winger says negotiations are progressing well but stopped short of saying whether an agreement will be reached."It's not looking bad, but I can't say how the solution will look in the end," he said, before adding: "Bayern and I are like a couple."

Schweinsteiger not giving up on Manchester United chance

    bastian-schweinsteiger-manchester-united_1vts5x5r24flg1jpbl1kmb8gez.jpg

Bastian Schweinsteiger insists he is still committed to earning his place back in the Manchester United team despite having been frozen out by manager Jose Mourinho.

The former Germany captain was told in August that he was not part of the United boss' plans and has been forced to train alone for much of the season.

Mourinho brought Schweinsteiger back into first-team training at the end of last month, but he is still expected to leave the club in January, with a move to MLS outfit Chicago Fire widely reported. But the 32-year-old is adamant he has not given up hope of forcing his way back into the team this term.

Speaking after being awarded the 'Special Jury' prize at Berlin's BAMBI awards, he said: "My goal is to play for Manchester United. I give everything for that in every training session and I hope for my chance."

He then added to Sky Sports News : "It's going well. I train with the first team and I enjoy it a lot. When the team needs me, I am there to help."Schweinsteiger was honoured for his achievements in club and international football, with Germany head coach Joachim Low also earning a prize.

The BAMBI jury said: "With a hitherto unknown combination of discipline and effortless skill, Bastian Schweinsteiger has won the hearts of the fans and become one of Germany's best and most popular footballers."His name symbolises sporting ambition and fair competition. He exudes both pure fighting spirit and a likeable, easy-going nature."

Griezmann WON'T join Real Madrid or Man Utd - Atletico president Cerezo

    antoine-griezmann-cropped_hb05ir75rdbt1idjn5tn5ahhy.jpg

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo says there is no chance of star forward Antoine Griezmann joining Real Madrid or Manchester United.

The France international has seen his name linked with a number of major sides across Europe in recent months given his sparkling form for club and country.

Rumours of a move to Old Trafford have emerged, with the player himself admitting he would relish the chance to play alongside compatriot Paul Pogba, while European champions Madrid have also been linked with a shock bid.

Cerezo, however, intends to rebuff any and all offers for the 25-year-old.
"I don't believe there is any possibility of Griezmann going to Madrid, or to any other team," he told Onda Cero. "There is a fantastic relationship with Real Madrid, a respect as people and as neighbours."Atletico face Madrid on Saturday for the first time since they lost the Champions League final on penalties at San Siro in May.

The home side know that a defeat at Vicente Calderon will see them slip nine points behind their city rivals in the table after only 12 games, leaving hopes of a Liga title challenge looking slim.

Cerezo claims it is tough to compete with Madrid and Barcelona given their financial superiority but says Diego Simeone and his players are determined to enjoy a successful season.

"We're going to try to have a better season than last year," he said. "La Liga is a very long competition, luck plays a part in the Champions League, and the Copa is a trophy that everyone wants and we'll fight for it."To compete with Real Madrid and Barcelona financially is very difficult. We try to improve on that every year."

When asked for his best memory of the derby, Cerezo pointed to the 2013 Copa del Rey final, when Atleti came from a goal down on their rivals' home turf to win 2-1.

"The most beautiful game against Madrid that I remember is the final of the Copa at the Bernabeu," he added. "In Milan, we didn't have to go to penalties... but football is like this."

Kanchelskis hits out at Mourinho's 'destructive' playing style

    andrei-kanchelskis_s7no4xs71vbv12u8a6qflcsfq.jpg

Andrei Kanchelskis has hit out at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, criticising his 'destructive' playing style which alienates wingers. The former Red Devils wideman played at Old Trafford for five seasons, and believes that Mourinho's tactics are hindering United's chances of success.

"Mourinho doesn’t like to play wingers. They play a different system now and it’s not like before when United played 4-4-2," said Andrei Kanchelskis, speaking exclusively to 888sport."Now it’s more defensive, looking for results and no longer playing the open football like before, it’s destuctive.

"If I was managing a team against Manchester United I would try to play 4-4-2 because if you play with wingers there is more chance of scoring goals against them.

"United are struggling to score goals because there is no service. United need better support for their attackers. I had people like Gary Neville and Paul Parker which allowed me to play. They were great defensive players down the right side so we could concentrate on attacking more.

"There are no wingers in any team now, club or international. It is not just a problem for Manchester United, it is a problem for the whole UK. Having wingers is good for the team and good for the fans. They excite and United have always had good wingers – Giggs, Beckham, myself, Ronaldo and Nani."

During his time at United, the Russia international won two Premier League titles as well as the FA Cup and League Cup under Alex Ferguson. Kanchelskis believes that the Scot's approach to man management was much better than Mourinho's, especially after recent public criticism of Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling.“What Mourinho did, it shouldn’t happen," the 47-year-old claimed.

"Ferguson was only critical in the dressing room and now too many coaches are critical of their players in public. No, no, no. Ferguson didn’t do that and it should not be done.”

However, Kanchelskis believes that both Mourinho and forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic should be given time to settle at Old Trafford, and feels that it is too quick to judge their impact at the club.

“He needs more time as he has only been in charge for a handful of games," Kanchelskis continued. "We need to wait until the end of the season. It has been three years since they last won a title and everything would change if he won a title there.

"I don’t think it will be this season though the next couple of months will be so important for him and the team. There are so many games around Christmas and then the FA Cup starts up again and if they begin to win regularly that will bring so much confidence.”

"On the whole it’s difficult to judge United’s season so far. We need more time to judge Manchester United, the players and Mourinho. We need to wait until the end of the season to see if there is a change or no change. Right now there has been only 12 games."

Ibrahimovic made a perfect start after signing from PSG, with four goals in his first four Premier League games, but went on a run of six games without a goal before netting two against Swansea.

Kanchelskis believes he has done enough at other clubs to prove to United fans that he is a natural goalscorer, and urges them to be patient with the 35-year-old:
“I also cannot understand the criticism of Ibrahimovic. Everybody knows he is a big player for big teams. He always helps these teams and he is the top goalscorer right now at United. Everyone loved him when he joined so why not now? There is no problem.”

Conte named Premier League Manager of the Month

    conte-chelsea_9y8exy551f7u1hhflrbtug8q7.jpg

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has been named the Premier League's manager of the month for October.

The former Juventus boss picks up the prize for the first time after guiding the Blues to five successive victories which has seen them climb to second in the table.

The Stamford Bridge outfit are also on a run of five matches without conceding having switched to a 3-4-3 system in recent weeks.

They head into Sunday's clash against Middlesbrough just a point behind leaders Liverpool, with Conte having overseen a recovery following their 2-1 defeat to Jurgen Klopp's side in September.

And Conte was joined by Eden Hazard in claiming personal honours after the Belgium international was named Player of the Month for October.

Hazard wins Player of the Month award

    hd-eden-hazard-chelsea-premier-league_199wtu112p12f1jiqccney3gf9.jpg

Eden Hazard has been crowned the Premier League's best player of the month for October.

The Belgium international has returned to form in 2016-17 having looked a shadow of the player who was indisputably the best attacker in the league when Chelsea stormed to the 2014-15 title.

Hazard kicked off October on the periphery of the Blues' 2-0 victory over Hull City - the first game in a string of five consecutive victories and clean sheets.

He took centre stage in the following clash against reigning champions Leicester City, who were trampled 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on October 15. Hazard whipped the corner in for the opener and scored the second goal.

Hazard's greatest moment of the month came against Manchester United, whom they thrashed 4-0 thanks to a stellar performance from the Belgian wing wizard. The 25-year-old rounded off October with another goal as they defeated Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's.

Antonio Conte was also rewarded on Friday for Chelsea's resurgence last month with the manager of the month award.Chelsea were turned over by Arsenal at the end of September in a 3-0 defeat that suggested they might not be up to the task of challenging for the title.

But the Blues are now placed second in the Premier League after 11 games and return from the international break with a visit to Middlesbrough, who have held Manchester City and Arsenal to draws in the last month.

Mourinho in Wenger dig: He gets more respect but hasn't won the title in 18 years!

    fenerbahce-manchester-united-mourinho-11032016_zl8nj6i3a35iz6en2llaegjd.jpg

Jose Mourinho believes he is shown a lack of respect by the British media when compared to that offered to Arsene Wenger, a man he claimed had not won the Premier League title for 18 years.

Mourinho's Manchester United on Saturday face Arsenal and Wenger, a man with whom he has had a long-running feud dating back to the Portuguese's time at Chelsea.Wenger has never beaten a Mourinho team in the Premier League and the former Real Madrid boss is frustrated at his media profile compared to the Frenchman.

He told a news conference: "The record, I repeat, against any other manager is not important. For me the only thing that matters is what you get globally, as a team. Our results, our CV.

"In the Premier League, tomorrow is a match between the two managers with the best record. Alex Ferguson is not here anymore. Tomorrow, between the two managers, we're speaking about six or seven Premier League titles, I think. I have three, he has three or four I don't know.

"Does that mean that we should be respected, even in periods where our results are not the best? I think Mr Wenger has that respect from all of you. I don't think I have. Especially because my last title was 18 months ago, not 18 years ago. But I just follow my way because I want to win a fourth Premier League."

Wenger's last of three Premier League crowns came in 2004 - 12 years ago - and Mourinho is hoping to beat him to a fourth come May 2017.He added: "I'm at the club where I want to be. It's as simple as that.

"When I was sacked at Chelsea, I was not in trouble, I had lots of offers. I don't speak about them because it's a question of principle. I could have been working immediately after I left, at some of the biggest clubs in Europe. And I waited."I was champion at four different clubs and I want to be champion at every club I work. It's quite a nice record if I can do that."

Pep Guardiola was careful not to be critical of Wayne Rooney in the wake of the Manchester United striker’s post-match drinking session, not least because the City boss admits he himself has also been drunk on international duty.

Rooney has been severely criticised by some after he was photographed while seemingly heavily inebriated at England’s hotel in the wake of their victory against Scotland last weekend.

It has also been suggested that he will be stripped of the England captaincy as a result of his actions, although a number of his international team-mates were said to have partied until the early hours away from the team base.

But when asked about the situation at his Friday press conference, Guardiola was keen not to be drawn into the ongoing controversy, although he did say it is the player’s own responsibility, just as it was when he got drunk during his career.

“I was an international player during my time as a player and sometimes I was drunk as well,” he said. “I was lucky there were no pictures. You [journalists] have drunk as well. I was responsible, you are responsible, Wayne is responsible as well.

“I don’t think the Association has to be responsible about that. We are people, we are old enough to take our responsibilities. But it’s the private life. You have to respect absolutely what other people do.”

He added: “I don’t like when people comment about my private life, I will not comment about the private life of other people. I have a lot of respect for Wayne Rooney, about his career, as a human being. Private life is the private life, I don’t have comments about that.

“I am responsible for what I do, it’s not the responsibility of Manchester City.”“All the players came back good, fit. The players who played 90 minutes are tired, especially the South American players, but that is normal and tomorrow we are going to decide.

People want to see if Rooney has still got it - Parker

    wayne-rooney-manchester-united-europa-league-2016_1hjykt0ijkgzm1fwf2hqjvgo42.jpg

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes Wayne Rooney should be given an opportunity to prove "he can still cut it" as a central striker against Arsenal. The Red Devils club captain has been shunted from the post that made him famous in recent times.

At 31-years-old, questions have been asked of his ability to deliver the goods, with club and country often asking him to drop deeper.Rooney has not entirely convinced in a playmaking role either, though.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been drafted in to provide cutting edge at Old Trafford this season, but the Swede will sit out Saturday’s meeting with Arsenal through suspension.

That could open the door to Rooney, with Parker of the opinion that Jose Mourinho should put his faith in the England international at the end of a week in which he has dominated the headlines for all of the wrong reasons and faced further uncomfortable questions regarding his future. He wrote in a column for Eurosport: “With Zlatan Ibrahimovic suspended, I think Rooney has to start up front against Arsenal on Saturday.

“Mourinho isn’t bothered about his centre-forward getting in behind all the time so it doesn’t matter so much that Rooney lacks the dynamism of old.“That’s the position in which he became a Manchester United great and now people will want to see if he can still cut it. “If he scores against Arsenal, no one is going to be remotely bothered if he gatecrashed a wedding.”

Rooney has started just six Premier League games this season, with Mourinho having dropped him to the bench following an uninspiring opening to the campaign.
He has only one top-flight goal to his name, and that came on the opening day of the season against Bournemouth.

It could be that he is given an opportunity to rediscover his touch against Arsenal, with United in need of inspiration from somewhere as they seek to avoid slipping further adrift in the battle to secure a top-four finish.

No drinking ban at Chelsea, Conte confirms after Rooney scandal

    antonio-conte_1ssxg2zahztcd1bi4la9edhu3j.jpg

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has admitted that he has no concerns over his player's conduct and that he likes to give them "freedom" during their time off.

The Blues boss was asked about Wayne Rooney was allegedly shown to be drunk after England versus Scotland, and said that he allowed his squad to be responsible for their actions.

Rooney has apologised for his "inappropriate" conduct after The Sun published photographs allegedly showing him to be drunk at the national team's hotel during the past week's international break.

Conte, who has implemented policies over his player's diets, has stopped short of limiting their alcohol intake during their time off and insists that he trusts his players not to overcelebrate, without banning alcohol entirely.

"After the game, when the players have spare time, it's important I give them freedom," Conte told a press conference at Cobham Training Centre.

"I want my players, when they have spare time, take responsibility."Above all because, when I was a footballer, I had this type of experience [had drinks] after games. It's normal, after matches, above all if you win the game, that you want to celebrate. But it's important, always, to think about the next game for me."

England's record goalscorer now finds his position as captain of his country under threat, but Conte said that football has moved on since his days as a player and that he hasn't had to deal with players being caught drinking in his time as coach of Juventus, Italy and Chelsea. “This situation, as a coach, never happened. It's hard for me to answer that [if the media overreacts], then. In future, if it happens, I'll let you know.”

Chelsea travel to Middlesbrough on Sunday, with the possibility of recording their sixth win a row to move to the top of the Premier League table. The Blues currently sit just a point behind Liverpool, who take on Southampton on Saturday.

Mourinho clears Rooney to face Arsenal despite difficult week with England

    wayne-rooney-cropped_uz6jrna7bncqzl7h99g0gizt.jpg

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho says Wayne Rooney is available to face Arsenal in Saturday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford. The club captain had been a doubt for the meeting with Arsene Wenger's side after sustaining a knee injury while on international duty with England this week.

Rooney's availability had also been called into question after he was pictured at a wedding party late at night following the World Cup qualifying win over Scotland, which prompted the 31-year-old to issue an apology to interim boss Gareth Southgate.Mourinho would not discuss what took place with England but said Rooney had trained as normal since returning to Manchester.

"Over the last two or three days nothing happened, he trained like everybody else, he wants to play like everybody else, he's ready," Mourinho told a media conference on Friday.

"What happened in the national team happened in the national team, I don't comment."My players when they go there belong to the national team and I don't like to comment.

"Sometimes they come back stronger than when they left us because something good happened there, positive for them, other times injuries, sometimes big injuries, sometimes frustrations because they didn't play or the result was bad.
"In this case, we knew what didn't go well but the national team is a different chapter and is closed now until March."

Mourinho infuriated at press for Smalling questions: You can't ask me about him!

    chris-smalling-cropped_1wgqlyfyemv2y1vzj4mtr7lqe1.jpg

Jose Mourinho refused to discuss Chris Smalling's injury situation at Manchester United and hit out at the recent media speculation surrounding the defender.

Mourinho appeared to question Smalling and team-mate Luke Shaw's commitment after they pulled out of the squad with injury concerns prior to the 3-1 victory over Swansea City.

Some reports have suggested that Smalling has suffered a broken toe that will keep him out for four weeks, though these claims were never officially verified by the club.

When asked for an update on his fitness ahead of Saturday's game against Arsenal at Old Trafford, Mourinho insisted he would not indulge scrutiny surrounding the 26-year-old.

"Chris Smalling, you cannot ask," he told a news conference. "You have your sources, you trust your sources, you write what they tell you and you did that for 15 days. So you are not going to ask me to comment on your sources' information. "You wrote, you spoke, you comment, you criticised. That's fine for me. I don't say a word about Chris Smalling."

However, Mourinho did confirm that Shaw would be available to face the Gunners and will certainly play a part in a difficult run of fixtures, with United due to play Feyenoord and West Ham twice before the end of the month."Luke Shaw, yes. He worked well in this period when we had a very small group. He's ready to play," he said.

"I don't have any problem with him. I'm not saying he plays or he doesn't but he's my player, a young player with potential. He has things to learn and improve but he has my confidence. Playing now, with five matches in two weeks, in three different competitions, for sure he's going to play."

Eric Bailly (knee) and Antonio Valencia (arm) are still sidelined, while there are doubts around Marouane Fellaini (calf), but captain Wayne Rooney has been passed fit to play by his manager.A win for United would take them to within three points of Arsenal in the Premier League table.
