Liverpool 2-0 Sunderland: Coutinho injury puts a damper on win

    liverpoolsunderland_z398pim7hg0e1fojieow8hmrw.jpg

Divock Origi and James Milner sent Liverpool top with two late goals to down Sunderland 2-0, but the Reds were left fretting over a potentially serious injury to Philippe Coutinho.

Origi, a 34th-minute substitute for Coutinho, curled home the opener with 15 minutes to go and James Milner added a late penalty to move the Merseyside club back above Manchester City at the summit on goal difference. They can be replaced by Chelsea should Antonio Conte's men beat Tottenham in the late game.Sunderland battled gamely but wasted the few opportunities that came their way to see their two-match winning streak come to an end.

Victory maintained Liverpool's unbeaten record at Anfield this season but it came at a heavy cost, with Coutinho potentially facing a lengthy absence after coming off second-best in a challenge with Ibrahim Ndong.

After receiving treatment, the Brazil playmaker was carried off on a stretcher with his right foot in a brace. Roberto Firmino also limped off late on to add to Klopp's woes.

Sunderland boss David Moyes spoke beforehand of how his side would "park the double-decker bus" but, while they defended stoutly, the strugglers also offered a threat on the break in the first half.

Having restricted Liverpool to a Georginio Wijnaldum effort that flew straight at Jordan Pickford, it was the visitors who created the first real opportunity of the afternoon after 17 minutes.

A Sunderland corner was only partially cleared and when Billy Jones hoofed the ball back into the area, above an advancing Liverpool defence, it fell nicely for Steven Pienaar but his close-range shot was well blocked by goalkeeper Loris Karius.

Klopp's men showed flashes of the quick, fluent football that has put them firmly in title contention but they were unable to work Pickford, with Firmino and Wijnaldum firing long-range efforts off target.

Coutinho's injury may have long-term repercussions for the Reds but the immediate impact was to galvanise a hitherto sterile Liverpool side, with the home side dominating possession prior to the break.

Unfortunately for Klopp, the best chance fell to Dejan Lovren, whose far-post header from Jordan Henderson's free-kick flashed narrowly wide of Pickford's left-hand post.Lovren also blasted off target from 20 yards before Pickford got down well to smother Mane's shot.

The start to the second period was similar to the ending of the first, with the game taking on the appearance of a defence versus attack exercise, Sunderland struggling to get out of their own half.

Mane and Firmino both wasted presentable chances, the former volleying wide from close range and the latter seeing a low drive well save by the impressive Pickford.

Klopp was cutting a frustrated figure on the touchline and he demanded more from the home supporters after 63 minutes with some frantic arm waving in a bid to liven up the Liverpool fans.

The hosts cranked up the pressure further but their all-out attack led to gaps at the other end and Duncan Watmore ought to have put Sunderland in front but dallied when faced by Karius and the chance went begging.

It was to prove costly as, after Jason Denayer had blocked a Mane effort four yards out, Liverpool's next attack produced the opening goal.Origi cut inside Watmore down the Liverpool left and his cross-shot eluded everyone and drifted past Pickford.

Sunderland rarely looked like getting back into the game and Liverpool doubled their advantage in injury-time when Ndong was adjudged to have tripped Mane and Milner made no mistake from the spot.

Swansea City 5-4 Crystal Palace: Last-gasp Llorente gives Swans victory

    llorente-swansea-city-crystal-palace-premier-league_cpupn6pvhr411u6w87plun79r.jpg

Under-fire Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew was pushed to the brink after his side were beaten 5-4 by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium in what will go down as one of the most spectacular finales in Premier League history.

Fernando Llorente scored twice in stoppage time to finally edge it for Swansea, capping off a rollercoaster afternoon in which the lead changed hands four times.

The Welsh side appeared to be on track for their first win under Bob Bradley when Leroy Fer netted twice following the break to hand his side a comfortable 3-1 lead, after Gylfi Sigurdsson had cancelled out Wilfried Zaha's first-half opener for Palace.

But Palace launched a spectacular late comeback, with a strike from James Tomkins, an own goal from Jack Cork and a close-range finish from Christian Benteke, all in the space of nine minutes, putting them 4-3 in front - seemingly enough to end their five-game losing streak and earn Pardew some breathing space at the end of a week in which he admitted his job was heavily "under scrutiny".

Instead, though, Llorente decided differently. First, he deflected Sigurdsson's shot past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey in stoppage time to level things up and then he netted again in the 94th minute from Neil Taylor's assist to end a true classic.
Not that Pardew will remember it as such.

The result sees Swansea move off the foot of the table, a point clear of Sunderland, while Palace are 16th following their sixth defeat in a row, level on points with 18th-placed Hull.

The visitors went close to grabbing an early lead when Benteke wildly blasted a shot over the crossbar from close range after the Swansea defence had failed to clear Yohan Cabaye’s corner, before Sigurdsson was presented with a good chance after some fine work from Modou Barrow at the other end.

Pardew’s men eventually grabbed the lead in the 20th minute via Zaha. Benteke did well to win the aerial challenge and flick the ball into the winger’s path, with the former Manchester United man outmuscling Taylor before firing a low shot past shot-stopper Lukasz Fabianski.

Connor Wickham was unfortunate not to double that lead when he forced Fabianski into a sublime save with a powerful header, before Sigurdsson levelled things up nine minutes before the break via a superb free-kick from 20 yards, after Jason Puncheon was adjudged to have fouled Cork.

Iceland international Sigurdsson curled his set-piece over the wall to beat Hennessey into the top, left corner - but Palace continued to pose a threat, and they almost immediately restored their lead when Cabaye rounded Fabianski and set up Zaha with a fine cross, only for the winger to see his header hit the crossbar. Benteke and Wickham got in each other’s way as they battled for the rebound.Swansea started more brightly after the break and they got the goal they deserved after 66 minutes when Fer scored his first of the afternoon, tapping home from close range to make it 2-1.

And it was 3-1 just two minutes later, Fer once more beating Hennessey from just a few yards out for his sixth goal of the season.

With Pardew urging them on from the touchline, Palace refused to give up and Tomkins earned them a lifeline in the 75th minute via his knee, before they pulled level with eight minutes left - again in fortunate fashion - as Cork beat his own goalkeeper following a Zaha cross.

Pardew could have been forgiven for breaking out a version of his now-infamous touchline dance when 3-3 became 3-4 two minutes later, as Benteke turned home Scott Dann’s knock-down to put Palace within sight of a huge win.Yet it was Llorente who was left celebrating in injury time, as he grabbed the equaliser by deflecting Sigurdsson's shot past the helpless Hennessey.

And there was still more to come when the Spaniard became his side's hero in the 94th minute, beating Hennessey from close-range to settle it - finally.

Real Madrid 2-1 Sporting Gijon: Ronaldo double gives Real victory

    cristiano-ronaldo-real-madrid-sporting-gijon-la-liga-26112016_j9m7zqqmf7qk1xl33vc2fdqyo.jpg

Real Madrid were let off the hook by Duje Cop's missed penalty as Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in an unconvincing 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon at a sodden Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday.

La Liga leaders Madrid were without star man Gareth Bale, who has been ruled out for up to four months with an ankle tendon injury, but appeared comfortable enough as talisman Ronaldo came to the fore in the soaking capital.

The Portugal superstar netted twice inside 18 minutes, opening the scoring from the spot after Lucas Vasquez - deputising for Bale - was felled in the area, before adding a second with a thumping header. However, Gijon were gifted a lifeline before the break when Carlos Carmona profited from some slack play by Luka Modric.

It appeared as though a further twist was in store when Gijon were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute, but Cop fluffed his lines from 12 yards as Madrid hung on for the three points.

Zinedine Zidane's men consequently up the ante on Barcelona, who play at Real Sociedad on Sunday, with Luis Enrique's side - who host Madrid in the first Clasico of the season next week - seven points adrift of the leaders.

The visitors started well and almost broke the deadlock in the first minute, but Carmona prodded just wide from close range after a clever reverse pass from Moi Gomez.

Real took full advantage of that let-off shortly after, though, as Vazquez jinked past Isma Lopez to draw the foul in the area and Ronaldo slammed the resulting penalty into the bottom-right corner.

Ronaldo threatened again without succeeding a few moments later, but he did not have to wait much longer to double his tally - meeting Nacho Fernandez's brilliant left-wing cross with an emphatic header in the 18th minute.Despite their defensive deficiencies, Gijon looked lively going forward and they gave themselves a lifeline 10 minutes before the break.

Modric's sloppy pass was intercepted in midfield and Gijon worked the ball down the left before Carmona directed Lopez's cross into the bottom-right corner with a hopeful flick of his right foot.

Gijon continued to see plenty of the ball after the break, but Real should have restored their two-goal lead just before the hour mark when Karim Benzema headed Vazquez's inch-perfect cross straight at Diego Marino.

Real began to tighten their grip on proceedings thereafter as they started passing forward with more purpose in an attempt to curb Gijon's belief.

But they needed a slice of luck 12 minutes from the end as Cop screwed his penalty wide of the top-right corner after Nacho fouled Victor Rodriguez in the area.

Real needed Keylor Navas to be alert shortly after to palm away Cop's close-range effort and Zidane's men held on for a scrappy win to throw down a gauntlet for Barcelona.

:baffled:Leicester's title defence the worst for over 50 years!

    hd-riyad-mahrez-leicester-city_e935n5lonf0p1sxd8p3vk6xxt.jpg

Leicester City may have rescued a last-gasp point against Middlesbrough on Saturday, but the defence of their Premier League title continues to stall. The Foxes find themselves just two points above the relegation zone after a third of the season having won just three matches and lost six.

And their tally of 13 points mean they have now made the worst start to a title defence in English top-flight football for 54 years!

Only Ipswich Town in 1962-63 have accrued fewer points (11) in the history of the game as champions, assuming three points are given for a win.

Leicester have also been behind for more minutes (417) this season than they were for the entirety of 2015-16 (391) after Alvaro Negredo twice gave Boro the lead at the King Power Stadium.

There is some good news for Claudio Ranieri, however, with Riyad Mahrez having scored two and assisted one in his last three league matches having not been directly involved in a goal for nine games previously.

Klopp: Sunderland are the most defensive team I have ever seen

    jurgen-klopp-cropped_zcdtvzkkqmjd11p58za889kkz.jpg

Jurgen Klopp described Sunderland as "the most defensive team I ever saw in my life" after his Liverpool side scrapped to a 2-0 win at Anfield.

Black Cats boss David Moyes said beforehand his team would "park the double-decker bus" on Saturday and they certainly adopted a defensive mindset, although it almost paid dividends as it took the home side 75 minutes to find a way through when Divock Origi curled home the opener.

James Milner added a late second from the penalty spot to send Liverpool to the top of the Premier League, ahead of Chelsea facing Tottenham later on Saturday.

Klopp said: "I was not in doubt about the result, I just tried to fix a few things like using space better. It was an intense game for us and a deserved win at the end.
"There is a lot to analyse. This was the most defensive team [Sunderland] I ever saw in my life.

"Sunderland always play a defensive style and that is okay. We forced them to be that. It is the most difficult thing in world football to come through but we stayed concentrated, worked for the moment and found a way."Klopp cut a frustrated figure for most of the afternoon, prompting him to rouse the crowd with some frantic arm waving after 63 minutes.

The German added: "The excitement is in the detail and that means you have to celebrate before you score a goal and push the team on if possible. It worked out. It's important the crowd know about the importance of their support."

The only downside for Liverpool was a serious-looking injury for Philippe Coutinho, who was carried off on a stretcher after 30 minutes following an accidental collision with Didier Ndong.

"It is an ankle injury but we can't say anymore until we see a scan," said Klopp. "Roberto Firmino got a knock on the calf as well. That should not be that serious."

Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham: Blues stage comeback to end Spurs' unbeaten run

    huk74uxo1nci1xrgncqxtb1tj.jpg

Chelsea came from behind to end Tottenham's unbeaten start to the season at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.Christian Eriksen put Spurs ahead with an excellent long-range strike, his first top-flight goal of the season.

But Chelsea responded with a superb effort of their own as Pedro curled his shot past Hugo Lloris just before half-time, before Victor Moses completed the comeback early in the second half.

Antonio Conte's men have now won seven consecutive league games and return to the summit after title rivals Liverpool and Manchester City had won earlier on Saturday.

Spurs, though, suffer their first league defeat of the season to cap a miserable week that also saw them knocked out of the Champions League at the hands of Monaco. They now sit seven points adrift of Chelsea in fifth and still have not won at Stamford Bridge since February 1990.

Harry Kane thought he had put the visitors in front from close-range in the early stages, only to be correctly flagged for offside from Eriksen's free-kick.But the visitors did move in front through a stunner from the Denmark international on 11 minutes.

Dele Alli was given space to drift inside and he found Eriksen, who took one touch before firing a superb left-footed strike past Thibaut Courtois from outside the area – the first top-flight goal conceded by Chelsea in 601 minutes.

Lloris was not tested until just before the half-hour mark when David Luiz's long-range free-kick flew into his arms, but Spurs were still the better side and Kane forced Courtois to push his powerful strike over at the other end.

A moment of brilliance from Pedro got Chelsea level in the final minute of the first-half, with the winger collecting Nemanja Matic's pass, turning sharply and sending a magnificent curling effort past Lloris from the edge of the box for his third goal in five league games.Pedro's equaliser had come against the run of play, but the momentum was all with Chelsea early in the second half, with Moses striking six minutes after the restart.

Diego Costa created the goal, making great ground down the left before his cut-back allowed the unmarked Moses to strike, with Jan Vertonghen unable to prevent the Nigeria international's low effort from crossing the line.

It should have been three for Chelsea a few moments later. Costa was again the creator – this time from the right – but an unmarked Marcos Alonso blazed a great chance over the bar on his weaker right foot.

Courtois did well to keep out an Eriksen effort as Spurs pushed for a leveller, but Pochettino was clearly unhappy with what he was seeing, bringing on Harry Winks, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen in an attempt to spark a recovery.

But a solo run and shot from Nkoudou which Courtois saved was the best the visitors could manage in the closing stages as Chelsea comfortably held on having controlled the second half.

Bayern Munich 2-1 Bayer Leverkusen: Bundesliga champions scrape home win

    bayern-munich-leverkusen_12m0eioltmj6t1ja35qfi0u5p1.jpg

Mats Hummels netted his first Bundesliga goal for Bayern Munich as Carlo Ancelotti's side battled to a 2-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

The Germany international returned to the club from fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund in the close-season and made a decisive intervention at the Allianz Arena to end a poor run of form for his team.

Ancelotti kept faith with just four of the starting XI from the shock 3-2 defeat at Rostov in the Champions League in midweek, and the fresh faces - including Hummels - managed to help end their three-match winless run in all competitions.

Surprise leaders RB Leipzig had increased their advantage over Bayern to six points with a 4-1 win at Freiburg on Friday, but the four-time defending champions were able to respond despite being below their best here.

Thiago Alcantara - one of the quartet who did start in Russia - put the home side ahead with a close-range header on the half-hour mark but the lead was short-lived, Hakan Calhanoglu equalising superbly five minutes later after a slick one-two with Julian Brandt.

Hummels' powerful header from a corner early in the second period restored the lead and - unlike against Rostov - it was one they would not relinquish, despite controversy late on with Javi Martinez escaping two strong penalty shouts from Leverkusen.

Bayern's defence had come in for fierce criticism following the loss at Rostov and they were almost breached in the second minute when Admir Mehmedi flashed a low shot narrowly past the post.

Thomas Muller prodded wide as Bayern responded, before Robert Lewandowski waited too long to shoot having been sent through by Xabi Alonso and Joshua Kimmich headed straight at Bernd Leno.

Bayern huffed and puffed for much of the opening half-hour but found themselves ahead as Kimmich laid the ball off for Philipp Lahm, whose effort was parried up into the air by Leno where Thiago was on hand to nod home from a couple of yards out.

And it was almost a second two minutes later, Leno producing a superb sprawling save to deny Lewandowski from David Alaba's cut-back.The importance of that stop was underlined shortly afterwards as Leverkusen equalised in sublime style.

Calhanoglu cut in from the left, exchanged passes with Brandt and lifted an excellent finish beyond Manuel Neuer into the top-right corner.

Bayern began the second period with greater purpose, Leno keeping out Douglas Costa but it was a temporary respite as Kimmich swung in a right-wing corner and Hummels thumped in a header.

Roger Schmidt summoned Kevin Volland and Javier Hernandez from the bench in an immediate response and the former came close to an equaliser in the final 10 minutes.

After lifting the ball over Neuer, Volland's attempted header from a tight angle close to the post appeared to be stopped by the hand of Martinez, who was also perhaps fortunate not to concede a spot-kick for bundling into Aleksandar Dragovic in stoppage time as Bayern escaped with all three points.

Empoli 1-4 Milan: Rossoneri keep up pressure on Juve

    jycfwxxtkvls1la1ax8vcqxb5.jpg

Gianluca Lapadula scored twice and Suso continued his impressive form as the duo stepped up in Carlos Bacca's absence to inspire AC Milan to a 4-1 defeat of Empoli on Saturday.

Bacca missed out with a thigh strain, but Lapadula - deputising in the absence of the injured Colombian - was in fine form in attack, while Suso scored for the third Serie A match in a row and also claimed two assists.

The visitors went ahead early in a thrilling first half thanks to a clinical finish from Lapadula, but Empoli hit back soon after through former Milan midfielder Riccardo Saponara, who punished an uncharacteristic Gianluigi Donnarumma error to score their first home league goal since September 12.Saponara was a constant nuisance for Empoli, inspiring numerous chances and spurning a glorious opportunity just before the break.

But Empoli were made to rue not making the most of their chances, with Suso - who scored twice in last week's Milan derby against Inter - and a Giacomo Bonaventura-inspired Andrea Costa own goal effectively ending their chances just after the hour.

Lapadula wrapped things up towards the end to justify Vincenzo Montella's faith in his selection as Milan moved second and within four points of leaders Juventus, who play Genoa on Sunday. The unfancied hosts started the match well and had Milan on the back foot from the off.

Mattia De Sciglio was robbed deep into his own half by Saponara, who cut the ball back towards the penalty spot for Massimo Maccarone, but Gustavo Gomez got a crucial touch on the eventual shot to deflect it wide.

Milan made the most of that let-off in the 15th minute, though, as Lapadula steered Suso's low cross into the bottom-left corner.

But the lead lasted just two minutes. Donnarumma flapped at a cross on the edge of the box and palmed it straight to Saponara, who drilled a fierce half-volley past the stranded goalkeeper.Milan nearly restored their lead just after the half-hour mark, but Ignazio Abate's left-footed strike went just wide of the left-hand post.

Empoli remained just as potent going forward and Saponara should have sent the visitors into half-time with the lead as he volleyed Maccarone's right-wing ball over the crossbar when unmarked in the area.

Milan retained possession much better in the second half and managed to gain some control of proceedings, affording Empoli significantly less opportunities to attack and a quick-fire double just after the hour mark took the game away from the hosts.

Suso initially put the visitors back in front with a neat finish into the bottom-left corner from 12 yards after a fine cut-back from Abate and Bonaventura inspired their third with a brilliant driving run up the left flank before his low cross was directed into the goal by unfortunate Empoli defender Costa.

Montella's men then put the game beyond all doubt 13 minutes from time when Lapadula collected Suso's pass in from the right flank and coolly found the bottom-left corner.

Ibrahimovic: I knew I would take over the world

    zlatanibrahimoviccropped_7iko48vavsa51g8mutuc98iz9.jpg

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he always knew he would "take over the world" and spoke of his delight at the Swedish Football Association's plans to build a statue of him that will reside outside the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

The Manchester United striker has proved one of Sweden's greatest exports, winning league titles in Netherlands, Italy, Spain and France.

The exuberant striker also enjoyed a distinguished international career before his retirement after Euro 2016 and is Sweden's all-time leading goalscorer.

Ibrahimovic will now be immortalised by the monument and he is delighted by the gesture."I come from a small area in Malmo - the ghetto, they call it - and I get a statue in the capital city of Sweden," Ibrahimovic told United's official website.

"I would not have believed it because I felt different. I did not feel like the other ones, where I came from, because of my background. But I believed that I would take over the world, that is for sure.

"Normally you get a statue when you pass away, but I am alive. It is incredible. I am super happy. I am honoured. Sweden is my country and whatever I do, I represent Sweden. I will always go back there.

"I cannot describe the words; the whole career I went through, it has been a big adventure with many things happening and this is the outcome. I get a statue. I cannot ask for more."

Ibrahimovic's statue will be designed by artist Peter Linde and will be a 2.7 metre version of the striker with his arms aloft, although he would have preferred a different design."It is like a gesture or a movement from a game, a typical Zlatan movement," he continued.

"I have gone through it, I have been a little bit critical because I wanted the statue to be like me: massive, powerful, magic, wow! All these combinations I wanted to get into it, but he has done a great job – he is a great artist. He has his way of seeing things and he made it like a symbol that would live forever."

Ronaldo is back on top form - Zidane

    cristianozidane-cropped_nsw6e0fdd7mv1npagpipbxo92.jpg

Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane feels Cristiano Ronaldo is back on top form after his double secured three points against Sporting Gijon.

Despite a disappointing display from Madrid, they retained momentum at the top of La Liga as Ronaldo netted a penalty and a thumping header to clinch victory at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portugal international received his fair share of criticism earlier this campaign, but Zidane was quick to point to a return to form for his talismanic forward, who already scored a hat-trick against Atletico Madrid last week.

"Cristiano is like that, he can score at any time," Zidane said. "When he does not score, people think that he has not played well."He played well with Karim [Benzema] in the middle and dropped out to the wing, working hard and he is back on form."

Zidane also defended James Rodriguez as the Colombian came in for the injured Gareth Bale, having previously struggled for game time."I do not consider him to be disinterested," he added."James played well, as did the others. He may lack a bit of rhythm, but I am happy that he got some playing time."

Real Madrid lacked a bit of everything - Zidane

    zidane-cropped_1ow6y7jdfj3441lv7dg5lbhyp3.jpg

Zinedine Zidane acknowledged that Real Madrid lacked "a bit of everything" as they stumbled to a slender 2-1 win over Sporting Gijon on Saturday.

La Liga pacesetters Madrid were 2-0 up and cruising thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo double, but Carlos Carmona pulled one back for the visitors 10 minutes before half-time.

Madrid never really took control thereafter and were left thankful that Duje Cop sliced a penalty wide with 12 minutes remaining.Zidane's men ultimately weathered the storm, but the head coach recognised it was not a vintage display.

"It was difficult," the Frenchman told reporters. "It was a match which the main priority was the three points."It's a game for us to forget because we did not do things as we wanted. We were lacking a bit of everything.

"I am not very happy with how we played. But that can happen sometimes. Above all we had the game in our hands with the two goals."We made it difficult for ourselves, but we can only be happy as we remain top of the table and we stay on our good run. We'll move on now."

The win saw Madrid extend their unbeaten streak across all competitions to 31 matches, the joint second-longest spell without a defeat in the club's history.

However, Zidane was keen to dismiss the importance of that run at this stage of the season, insisting such streaks matter little if you win nothing at the end of the season.

He added: "An unbeaten streak is good but what matters is where we finish at the end of the season. After that you assess your season.

"When I was a Real Madrid player we were leaders in all competitions back then and then we won nothing. The end of the season is vital."Let's see where we finish in June next year. If we continue on the path we're on we can achieve something again this season."

Pochettino: We were better than Chelsea!

    mauriciopoch-cropped_vbm8uvuihap1zbuhysvd9pcb.jpg

Mauricio Pochettino insisted Tottenham deserved to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge as their Premier League unbeaten streak came to an end.

Spurs took an early lead through Christian Eriksen on Saturday, but Pedro's goal - against the run of play - pegged them back, before Victor Moses scored to make it 2-1.

While Pochettino did not believe the result was a fair reflection of the game, he was still pleased by Tottenham's performance as they lost for the first time in the Premier League this season.

"I think if you analyse the game, we were better [than Chelsea]," Pochettino told BT Sport. "Against a team in very good form at a good level, we competed really well in the first half.

"It was a little bit unlucky that we conceded the goal, because we deserved to go in at half-time [winning] 2-0 or 3-0 - never 1-1. I think we deserved more."

He added: "In the second half, we conceded a goal very quickly, but we fought and competed. Then they had the chance and scored the second goal, and it was impossible.

"I'm disappointed for the dressing room, but we should be pleased with the way we competed. I think today we competed with a very good team. I have nothing to say about that to my players.

"If you put aside the result at the end, we had the possession, we created more than Chelsea and all the statistics are for us - but football is not about just statistics.
"We have to be clinical, and the chances that they created, they scored."

Pepe hopes to earn an extension to his Real Madrid contract and wants to retire at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 33-year-old defender has enjoyed an outstanding year, winning the Champions League with Madrid followed by Euro 2016 with Portugal, and he is looking to continue his career with the Spanish giants.

Having signed a deal in August 2015 that expires at the end of the season, there has been talk of another one-year extension - and Pepe has confirmed his desire to stay.

"My plan is to retire at Real Madrid," he told reporters after the 2-1 La Liga win over Sporting Gijon. "I'm 33 years old, and last season was one of my best ever.

"It will be what the club wants. My renewal is in Real's hands. I will wait for the club until the last second of my contract."The former Porto player has made nine appearances for Madrid in all competitions this season, scoring once.

Mourinho: I feared Jones would never recover best form

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho feared defender Phil Jones would never return to his best form due to his injury struggles.

Jones, 24, is set to start his fourth consecutive game when United host West Ham in the Premier League on Sunday.

But even Mourinho felt the centre-back would find it hard to recapture his best after a 2015-16 campaign during which he played just 10 league games and had a knee injury earlier this season."His condition looks very good and his confidence is improving," the Portuguese tactician told UK newspapers.

"Phil is playing really well, no mistakes in 90 minutes, and I'm really happy for him because so many people had him down as injury prone and believed it would be hard for him to get back to his best level.

"I have to confess that when he was injured again at the beginning of the season even I was feeling that fear but he has put in some great performances in the past weeks to give us the stability we need after losing [Eric] Bailly and [Chris] Smalling."

In an era during which playing out from the back is considered vital, Mourinho enjoys simply seeing Jones defend. He said: "He likes to defend as a defender.

"Sometimes defenders now think the most important quality is to build from the back."That is not the most important quality. The most important quality is to defend."
