Chelsea 1-0 West Brom: Costa goal seals win as Conte's men return top

    costa-chelsea-vs-west-brom_17ex9rfjqyfva1tukbie8zn3yj.jpg

Chelsea returned to the top of the table with their ninth successive Premier League win as they beat West Brom 1-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal had temporarily toppled the Blues with victory over Stoke City on Saturday, but Antonio Conte's side reclaimed pole position, Diego Costa finally breaking through a dogged West Brom defence for the decisive goal, which marked his 12th of the season.

Tony Pulis' men went into the game on a four-match unbeaten run but leave west London without reward despite a promising first half in which Salomon Rondon had the best chance.

Chelsea offered little after the restart to suggest they would break the deadlock, with Costa largely anonymous as Willian and Cesc Fabregas were introduced from the bench.

However, after 76 minutes, Costa muscled his way through on the right and blasted a stunning left-footed finish into the top-left corner to settle the contest.
West Brom, who would have been good value for a point, could not hit back, allowing Chelsea to re-establish a three-point cushion at the summit.

The visitors started brightly, with Chris Brunt lashing their first notable effort wide from 20 yards, before Rondon stole possession from David Luiz on the touchline and drove a shot narrowly off target.

Chelsea responded as Pedro directed N'Golo Kante's speculative strike just past the right-hand post, and Costa could not stretch to turn a teasing left-wing cross into the net.David Luiz dipped a free-kick towards goal shortly before the break, but Ben Foster was down to save comfortably.

Although Foster was sent sprawling as another David Luiz set-piece deflected wide after the restart, Chelsea still could not build momentum.

Matt Phillips took possession from Willian and sought out Rondon in the middle, but Gary Cahill was on hand to make an important block, and produced a similar dive in front of the onrushing Darren Fletcher as a loose ball fell to the midfielder on the edge of the box.Nemanja Matic dragged an ambitious long-range effort wide, with Willian following suit with a tame effort from the right.

But, with 14 minutes remaining, Costa came up with the goods.Bustling past Gareth McAuley, Costa created a shooting angle and drilled a thunderous effort past the helpless Foster to finally open the scoring.

West Brom tried to muster a response, but could not forge a serious opening in the final minutes as Chelsea comfortably held firm, Marcos Alonso almost doubling the hosts' lead late on.

Torino 1-3 Juventus: Higuain brace helps to seal derby spoils

    torino-juventus-gonzalo-higuain_11bwugpnkekza13cop77zp1c0s.jpg

Gonzalo Higuain netted a derby brace as Juventus extended their lead at the top of Serie A to seven points with a 3-1 come-from-behind win at city rivals Torino.

With second-placed Roma facing third-placed AC Milan on Monday, Juve took the opportunity to consolidate their position through their record signing's classy finishing and Miralem Pjanic's late effort.Torino had been unbeaten at home in the league this season and showed their quality in Sunday's display, where they led through Andrea Belotti's header.

Joe Hart had already made one superb save by that stage, but he could not deny Higuain an equaliser as Juve looked to kick on before the break.

After half-time, Torino took control, probing the visiting back-line in the hope of stealing a rare derby win, but Adem Ljajic missed a great opportunity to earn his side the three points.

Instead, Higuain was the hero, slamming home eight minutes from time, before Pjanic added a third, with Torino now having beaten Juve just once in the past 21 top-flight meetings.

Mirko Valdifiori fired an early, dipping strike over the crossbar from 20 yards and Torino quickly established a threat on the counterattack, with Belotti frustrated when he appeared to be tugged back by Daniele Rugani as he ran clear.

Mario Mandzukic misdirected a header from in front of goal at the other end, before the Croatia international forced a smart low save from Hart with his close-range stab.

After 16 minutes, though, the hosts moved in front through a fine, flowing move.

Davide Zappacosta burst forward on the right and pushed the ball on to Daniele Baselli, whose cross from the byline was brilliantly steered inside the far post by the head of Belotti.

Hart was soon back in action as he held from Higuain's drive, but the Juve man found the net with his next sight of goal.

Profiting as the ball flicked up off Mandzukic's heel, Higuain instantly took control and ushered a cool finish beyond the advancing Hart from inside the area.Although clear chances were harder to come by in the second period, those that did arrive initially fell Torino's way.

Marco Benassi's thunderous strike was blocked and Iago Falque volleyed the rebound wide from the edge of the box, while Baselli pounced on a loose pass to kickstart a break, but found his final ball equally slack.

Ljajic ran onto Falque's defence-splitting pass on the left, but he could not curl his shot inside the corner as Gianluigi Buffon stood rooted to the spot, with Torino attempting to hold on for a hard-fought point.

And that proved costly as Higuain struck again.Holding off the challenge of a recovering defender as he collected Giorgio Chiellini's pass, Higuain spun to crash a shot past Hart.

The England goalkeeper saved brilliantly from Higuain in stoppage time, springing up to block the rebound, too, but Pjanic then swept in to put the result beyond doubt.

Southampton 1-0: Middlesbrough: Boufal stunner seals Saints win

    southampton-middlesbrough-sofiane-boufal_zhc5fmtgcl1y1ebgxrgis6yaj.jpg

A superb strike from Sofiane Boufal helped Southampton to a first home Premier League win over Middlesbrough for 20 years as they claimed a 1-0 victory at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday.

The winger had yet to score in the league following his big-money move from Lille during the close-season, but he broke his duck in fine fashion with a sweet long-range strike into the top-left corner early in the second half to secure the points.

Southampton were desperate to return to winning ways after last week's 3-0 defeat at the hands of Crystal Palace and their Europa League elimination on Thursday.

History was against the hosts, though, with Southampton having not beaten Middlesbrough at home in the Premier League since September 1996.

And Middlesbrough had good reason to be confident heading into the game, having lost just one of their last six Premier League outings.

But Aitor Karanka's men failed to build on their solid run of form as they were second-best for much of the game and were unable to mount a response after Boufal's ultimately decisive strike.

Middlesbrough had the first chance to open the scoring when Viktor Fischer found Jordan Rhodes after somehow squeezing past Cuco Martina, but the striker failed to beat goalkeeper Fraser Forster from close range.

Jordy Clasie then threatened twice for Southampton, shooting wide on both occasions, before Jay Rodriguez tested Boro shot stopper Victor Valdes with a low shot at his near post as Southampton slowly grew into the game.

James Ward-Prowse should perhaps have broken the deadlock on the half-hour mark after a sublime cross from Dusan Tadic, but the unmarked midfielder sent his header wide of the target.

Saints nearly fell behind when Fischer rounded Forster after racing onto a poor backpass, only for the Denmark international to then hit the right-hand upright from a narrow angle, with Cristhian Stuani unable to find the net from the rebound.

Boufal was unfortunate to have an attempt blocked by Calum Chambers early in the second half, but there was no denying the Morocco international in the 53rd minute.

The 23-year-old took aim from the edge of the area after being set up by Ward-Prowse, producing a stunning effort that left Valdes with no chance.Rodriguez would have doubled Southampton's lead had his header from a corner not been cleared off the line.

He was presented with a second opportunity to make it 2-0 deep into stoppage time, only for the forward to inexplicably fire wide from point-blank range following good work from Nathan Redmond.

Chelsea set new Premier League record with winning run

    costa-chelsea-vs-west-brom_17ex9rfjqyfva1tukbie8zn3yj.jpg

Chelsea's 1-0 win over West Brom extended the Blues' winning run to nine games, the fifth time the club have won nine or more games in a row, which is also a new Premier League record.

A single goal by Diego Costa was enough to give Antonio Conte's side victory and moves them three points clear at the top of the table.

The Blues have not dropped points since being beaten by Arsenal back in September, a run that has included victories over champions Leicester, Manchester United, Tottenham and Manchester City.

However, this is not the first time Chelsea have achieved such a remarkable run, they also won nine games in a row in 2007 and 2005 - on their way to the title.
Conte's side will now be hoping to extend that run to 10 games, a feat they also achieved in 2009, when they face Sunderland before taking on Crystal Palace next Saturday.

:love:Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham: Mkhitaryan winner earns Red Devils victory

    1sdztghgxcxno1p5cx2m9pl9vh.jpg

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's first Premier League goal led Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over Tottenham that kept Jose Mourinho's men in contact with the top five as the visitors' miserable away form continued.

Mkhitaryan netted after 29 minutes of a contest in which United looked as confident and composed as they have since Mourinho took over as manager at Old Trafford, but the Armenian midfielder was taken off on a stretcher in the closing stages after injuring his ankle.

The result gave the Red Devils their first home victory in the league since September, while Spurs' winless run on the road in all competitions now stretches to eight matches.

It was the style and swagger of United's forwards that will have most pleased Mourinho, as his expensively-assembled attack proved that they can win games against the league's best teams – without dominating possession.

The defeat was only Spurs' second in the league this season, but manager Mauricio Pochettino – whose side are now 10 points adrift of leaders Chelsea – will have been disappointed by his side's lack of attacking threat and a notably poor performance by Harry Kane, who was at fault for United's goal.

Mkhitaryan, who has galvanised United's attack in recent weeks, surged forward in the second minute and fed Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with his cross affording Paul Pogba the chance to draw the first save from Hugo Lloris with a low shot.

Having survived the early scare, Spurs set about enforcing their brand of possession football from deep areas of the pitch, but the steadying influence of Michael Carrick and Phil Jones at the heart of Mourinho's team made it difficult for the visitors to find openings.

Christian Eriksen stung the palms of David de Gea with a well-struck free-kick after 18 minutes, before Ander Herrera sent a long-range drive straight into the arms of Lloris and Carrick thundered an attempt over the crossbar.

United's industry paid off on the half-hour mark when Kane gave the ball away sloppily in the centre circle and Herrera released Mkhitaryan, who sprinted clear of the Spurs defence and lashed a shot high into the net, giving Lloris no chance.

Ibrahimovic should have doubled the lead moments later, but was denied by Lloris, and at the other end De Gea made a good save from Son Heung-min to keep United ahead at the break.

Eriksen was again denied by the quick reactions of De Gea in the second half, before Victor Wanyama missed a golden chance to equalise when he was presented with a free header, which he badly misdirected.

United continued to impress at the other end, with Anthony Martial, Ibrahimovic and Mkhitaryan showing signs that they are developing an understanding that could be vital to the club's hopes of reviving their title challenge this season.

Pogba went close to doubling United's lead, first with a wickedly curling free-kick that hit the angle of post and crossbar, and then with a close-range drive that Lloris did well to block.

De Gea made yet another save from Eriksen, diving low to save the Dane's powerful free-kick, before Mkhitaryan went over on his left ankle leaving him unable to continue, much to the concern of the home crowd.

There was to be no cameo for Wayne Rooney, who is one goal short of Bobby Charlton's Manchester United record of 249, but he will have been pleased to see his side return to winning ways on home turf.

Liverpool 2-2 West Ham: Origi rescues point for Reds in error-strewn draw

    hd-divock-origi_16iq6doiyfijh1ki7hsr8k9bc7.jpg

Divock Origi's second-half equaliser saw Liverpool salvage a thrilling 2-2 draw in an error-strewn Premier League match against struggling West Ham.

The Belgium international netted for the fourth consecutive match as Jurgen Klopp's men recovered from losing an early lead at Anfield, but they now sit six points adrift of leaders Chelsea in third place after a second straight match without a victory.Adam Lallana was brought back into Liverpool's team as one of two changes and he opened the scoring with his first top-flight strike since September.

But Dimitri Payet equalised for West Ham with a trademark free-kick as poor positioning from home goalkeeper Loris Karius – who also made a mistake at last week's late collapse at Bournemouth - helped his cause.

Michail Antonio had the visitors in front when he capitalised on a mistake from Joel Matip, but Origi scored from close range after Darren Randolph had dropped Sadio Mane's cross shortly after half-time to claim a point.

West Ham boss Slaven Bilic was backed by the club's board this week and while this result extends their winless run to six top-flight matches, it is enough to move them out of the bottom three.

The opener arrived in the fifth minute when Mane made ground down the left after linking up with Origi and sent in a cross for Lallana, with the midfielder afforded time to control and send a calm finish into the far corner from eight yards.

West Ham almost produced an immediate response, but Antonio's effort was saved by Karius after Winston Reid's through ball had sent him clean through.

But the visitors did move level after 27 minutes. Following Lallana's foul on Pedro Obiang, Payet found the bottom corner from 25 yards, with Karius unable to keep it out having given the France international plenty of space to aim for.Twelve minutes later, West Ham were ahead with some dreadful Liverpool defending punished.

Havard Nordtveit's long ball forward deflected off Jordan Henderson and was completely missed by Matip, allowing Antonio to steal in and divert his finish past a hesitant Karius.

That meant the visitors went into the break in front, but only after surviving a scare in first-half stoppage time, Matip latching on to Henderson's corner and seeing his looping header bounce off the crossbar.

Liverpool were not to be denied three minutes into the second half, though. Mane was again their creator on the left when his cross at the second attempt was mishandled by Randolph, giving Origi a simple finish from inside the six-yard box.

Georginio Wijnaldum fired just wide having been found by Mane before he curled another effort narrowly off-target as Liverpool looked to complete the comeback.
Randolph atoned for his earlier error with a superb diving save to keep out a magnificent 30-yard strike from Henderson that was flying towards the top corner.

Liverpool's attacking play slowed in the closing stages, but they still had a late chance to grab victory, only for Nathaniel Clyne to fire over after an impressive team move, leaving them with only one win from four top-flight games.
