:love:Swansea City 0 Manchester United 4: Mourinho's men win big again after late goal glut

    soxtX3Q.jpg

Manchester United claimed their second consecutive 4-0 victory as Swansea City collapsed to a thumping defeat at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

Eric Bailly put United in front with his first goal for the club late in the first half, during which the home side had defended resolutely. It was not until the final 10 minutes that the visitors gave the scoreline its convincing gloss, with Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all scoring in the space of four minutes.

The result follows a 4-0 victory over West Ham on the opening weekend, while for Swansea the creativity of Gylfi Sigurdsson was sorely missed.Sigurdsson – provider of nine goals and 13 assists in the league last season – left for Everton on Wednesday in a deal worth a reported £45million following drawn-out negotiations between the two clubs.

The Iceland international had sat out Swansea's season-opening goalless draw with Southampton last weekend, in which the Welsh club attempted just four shots on goal, and their attacking threat was limited once more on Saturday.Jordan Ayew clipped the crossbar early on but that was one of only six attempts by Swansea – one of those on target.

A new 3-5-2 formation suggested Swansea's priority was keeping their visitors at bay but it was the Welsh club who created the first opening of the match – Ayew's attempted chip kissed the crossbar as it floated across the face of goal. Lukaku then poked wide after United embarked on a rapid counter-attack, before Phil Jones headed against the woodwork from a Juan Mata free-kick when he should have done better.

Kyle Bartley justified his inclusion as the extra man in Swansea's back line when he made a crucial tackle to halt Marcus Rashford, who would have been clean through on goal without the former Arsenal man's intervention. An ambitious overhead kick from Martin Olsson – struck more in hope than expectation – was comfortably held by David De Gea midway through the half, but a misjudged Alfie Mawson header then created an opening for Rashford.

The young striker – heckled throughout for the dive that won United a penalty in the last meeting between these sides – lifted the ball harmlessly into Fabianski's arms, before Jose Mourinho's men broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time.Pogba's powerful header from a Daley Blind corner was touched onto the crossbar by Fabianski, but Bailly was on hand to finish the job after the ball bounced on the goal line.

The second half was played at a rather pedestrian pace for long spells, as Swansea struggled to find a way through. When half-chances to level did arise, they were not taken – Tammy Abraham's wayward header on the hour was about as close as they came.

Lukaku then opened the floodgates when he found space in the box to direct a considered shot beyond Fabianski in the 80th minute, before Pogba - who survived calls for a second yellow card during the first half - lifted a delicate chip over the Poland international.Substitute Anthony Martial then finished the job, cutting inside Mawson to slot home United's fourth.

Manchester United off to best scoring start in 110 years

Manchester United's high-flying Premier League start has seen the club accomplish a feat for the first time in 110 years.

After defeating Swansea City 4-0 on Saturday, United have scored four or more goals in their opening two league games for the first time since the 1907-08 season.

Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial all scored for the second game in a row in the comprehensive win at the Liberty Stadium. Centre-back Eric Bailly was also on target.
United defeated West Ham by the same 4-0 scoreline on opening day, putting Jose Mourinho's side at the top of the table early in the Premier League campaign.

Wolfsburg 0 Borussia Dortmund 3: Pulisic shines as Bosz makes ideal start

    wire-1167309-1503168129-890_634x384.jpg

Christian Pulisic shone for Borussia Dortmund as Peter Bosz got his first Bundesliga campaign off to a winning start with a convincing 3-0 victory at Wolfsburg.

With Ousmane Dembele suspended by the club following his refusal to train amid transfer speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona, it was fellow youngster Pulisic who stepped up to the mark for Dortmund.

Having already caused havoc down the right flank, the 18-year-old - who netted in the DFL-Supercup against Bayern Munich - thumped Dortmund into the lead 22 minutes in.Marc Bartra was quick to follow suit with an equally stunning effort - his audacious cross-cum-shot putting Bosz's side well in control.

Andries Jonker's men did look to mount a comeback, Mario Gomez squandering a gilt-edged chance, but Pulisic's influence soon paid dividends again as he teed up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the hour.

Although Gomez saw a goal disallowed, Wolfsburg never really threatened, as Dortmund eased to an impressive victory in Bosz's Bundesliga debut.Despite dominating possession, Dortmund should have found themselves behind 12 minutes in.

Daniel Didavi's deflected effort led to a corner, from which Yannick Gerhardt was afforded the freedom of Dortmund's area, only to send his header well wide.
Gerhardt's wastefulness could have been swiftly punished, but Gonzalo Castro failed to apply the finish from Pulisic's wicked cross.

Bosz did not have to wait much longer for the first Bundesliga goal of his tenure, though - Pulisic engineering space on the edge of Wolfsburg's area before drilling a venomous finish past Koen Casteels.

Dortmund wasted no time in extending their lead, Bartra's sublime effort looping over Casteels and into the top right corner from an acute angle to make it 2-0 five minutes later.

Wolfsburg's misery was nearly compounded prior to the interval, Aubameyang slicing his strike just wide as Dortmund looked to wrap up the points early.

Mario Gotze, starting for the first time in 2017, was the next to try his luck, though his tame strike was dealt with comfortably by Casteels.Gomez cut a frustrating figure for much of proceedings, although Wolfsburg's forward should have done better after shirking off Bartra's challenge to get one-on-one with Roman Burki.

Aubameyang made no such mistake at the other end, however, as last season's top scorer in the Bundesliga latched onto Pulisic's terrific cross to open his account for 2017-18.

The hosts thought they had snatched a consolation through Gomez late on, but the linesman's flag denied the former Bayern Munich man as Dortmund cruised to a fifth successive win over Wolfsburg.

Liverpool 1 Crystal Palace 0: Mane rescues Klopp from more Premier League frustration

    4362432C00000578-4805172-image-a-73_1503156823829.jpg

Liverpool ground out their first Premier League win of the season as Sadio Mane's second-half strike secured a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

The home side conceded an injury-time equaliser in their 3-3 draw at Watford in their opening match and had looked likely to stumble again on Saturday until the Senegal star pounced with 17 minutes left to play.

Frank de Boer endured a 3-0 home loss to Huddersfield Town last weekend in his first match in charge at Palace and, although his side produced a far more organised display on Merseyside, they were undone by another defensive error, this time from Luka Milivojevic.

Jurgen Klopp chose to start without Mohamed Salah, Emre Can and Dejan Lovren, with Liverpool facing the second leg of their Champions League play-off against Hoffenheim on Wednesday, and his team looked well short of their electric best in attack.

Joel Matip missed the best chance of the first half from a cross from debutant Andrew Robertson and Liverpool could have found themselves behind had former Reds striker Christian Benteke done better with a clear opening after the break.

Frustration around the stands was beginning to build until Mane at last showed a clinical touch to secure an important home win ahead of a difficult run of matches, which includes back-to-back meetings with Arsenal and Manchester City.

James Milner, restored to the line-up on the left of midfield, tested Wayne Hennessey early on before Matip spurned a glorious chance to break the deadlock, somehow heading the ball wide of the right-hand post after the Palace goalkeeper had missed Robertson's cross.

Daniel Sturridge was tasked with leading the Liverpool attack but his only half-chance of a quiet first half hour was a shot from 20 yards out that he blazed over the crossbar. The half at least ended in exciting fashion, with Hennessey making a tremendous save to deny Roberto Firmino from 20 yards and Simon Mignolet beating away Jason Puncheon's strike as Palace broke with speed.

Milner watched a free-kick fly narrowly over and Hennessey was at full stretch to keep Firmino's volley from creeping into the bottom corner, as Liverpool started the second half with some real attacking intent.

Benteke wasted a golden chance to score his sixth goal in four visits to Anfield as an opposition player, the Belgian skying his first-time shot from barely 10 yards out after some brilliant work from Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

Klopp introduced Salah from the bench for his Anfield debut and the Egypt winger's first contribution was to wreak havoc with a driving run, but Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum failed to capitalise.

However, with 73 minutes gone, Mane was gifted a chance he could not pass up. Milivojevic's poor control on the edge of the box saw the ball run loose, and when Dominic Solanke blocked an attempted clearance, Mane had the simple task of prodding the ball low past Hennessey.

Liverpool's lead remained unthreatened in the closing minutes, allowing Klopp to celebrate a victory before attentions turn to the visit of Hoffenheim next week, where the Reds lead 2-1 from the first leg.

Leicester City 2 Brighton and Hove Albion 0: Okazaki's early opener sets Foxes on their way

Shinji Okazaki scored inside 52 seconds as Leicester City got their Premier League campaign up and running at the second attempt with a 2-0 home success against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Two late strikes at Arsenal on the opening day had the 2015-16 champions on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller, but this time the result never looked in doubt after a goal in the game's first attack, and Harry Maguire later headed a second.
Brighton barely laid a glove on Manchester City in their Premier League debut - another 2-0 defeat - and they again lacked the firepower to respond after Okazaki's opener at the King Power Stadium.

The Japan international's tap-in owed much to Mat Ryan's generous goalkeeping and the lead suited a well-versed Leicester game plan as they encouraged the visitors to attack and found them incapable of troubling a sturdy defence.

Ryan was beaten again when Maguire stooped a header into the net from close range and, despite the introduction of Foxes old boy Anthony Knockaert, Brighton's continued wait for a Premier League goal ensured a comfortable Leicester win.

Okazaki had netted early at Emirates Stadium and needed less than a minute to add his second of the campaign here, tucking home a simple finish inside the area after Ryan's feeble parry from a Riyad Mahrez shot.

And Leicester continued to prey on a nervy Brighton back line, with Jamie Vardy miscuing twice in quick succession when Okazaki's enterprise forged a clear opening for the England man.

A blatantly offside Glenn Murray was denied an equaliser at the other end and the visitors then appealed in vain for a penalty as Wes Morgan blocked bravely with a combination of arm and chest from Jamie Murphy's drive.

But that attacking flurry was all too brief for Chris Hughton's side and Okazaki almost doubled Leicester's lead shortly before half-time with a lunging effort from Vardy's right-wing centre just missing the near post.

A second goal did arrive nine minutes after the break, though, as Maguire met Mahrez's corner and saw his header clip marker Shane Duffy on its way past Ryan.

Brighton again offered little by way of a riposte, although Kasper Schmeichel was finally tested by Tomer Hemed, and Mahrez and Marc Albrighton both could have scored another had they not finished tamely in promising positions.

Victory was secured without the need for a third goal, but a day of positivity for Craig Shakespeare's men ended on a slight sour note as Vardy hobbled off after appearing to injure his ankle in a stoppage-time collision with Ryan.

:love:Martial drops Manchester United stay hint after scoring against Swansea

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial has dropped a big hint that he wants to remain at Old Trafford after netting in an easy win for his club on Saturday.

The Frenchman rounded off a 4-0 drubbing of Swansea City with the final goal of the day, after Eric Bailly, Romelu Lukaku and Paul Pogba had all found the target.

He needed just seven minutes to score after coming off the bench as a late substitute, exactly the same time it took him to beat the West Ham defence last week.

Reports have suggested Martial's future could lie away from Old Trafford as he faces an uphill struggle to break ahead of the likes of Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to gain a regular starting role.

But the forward, who has been linked with a move to Tottenham, seems to have played down those rumours with a post on his Instagram page.

Martial shared a picture of him pointing to the Manchester United badge after full time, to the delight of his followers who took it to mean he was going nowhere.
And if he keeps making such an impact late on for the Red Devils it will be impossible for Jose Mourinho to keep him out of the first team!

Southampton 3 West Ham 2: Austin settles five-goal thriller with late spot-kick

Charlie Austin's 93rd-minute penalty denied 10-man West Ham a hard-earned Premier League point as Southampton escaped with a 3-2 win at St Mary's on Saturday.

Javier Hernandez looked to have secured a fantastic draw with a brace either side of half-time after the Saints surged two goals ahead, but Pablo Zabaleta's push on Maya Yoshida enabled substitute Austin to snatch all three points with effectively the last kick of the match.

Southampton had earlier opened up a two-goal lead as Manolo Gabbiadini found a way past Joe Hart after 11 minutes. The Hammers then lost Marko Arnautovic to a straight red card for catching Jack Stephens with his arm before Dusan Tadic made it 2-0 from the spot.

However, Hernandez appeared to be Slaven Bilic's saviour by cutting the deficit before half-time and then added an equaliser with around 16 minutes remaining, opening his account in thrilling fashion following his close-season move from Bayer Leverkusen.

But Austin stepped off the bench to roll in a late winner from the spot and give Mauricio Pellegrino a first league victory as Saints boss.

Bilic handed a first start to 18-year-old Declan Rice as he rung the changes following the 4-0 defeat at Manchester United, although his plans suffered a setback when Winston Reid sustained a calf injury in the warm-up.

Michail Antonio made his return from a lengthy hamstring injury and the winger looked lively from the outset, teeing up Arnautovic for a good early chance before heading a corner into the arms of Fraser Forster.

West Ham's encouraging start quickly came to an end, though, as Nathan Redmond put a smart pass into space for Gabbiadini, who raced into the area and swept a clean left-foot finish across Hart.

Arnautovic should have done better again when Hernandez whipped an enticing ball in behind the defence, but the Austrian's stooping header was well smothered by Forster.

Tempers began to flare with Mario Lemina at the centre of a couple of heated exchanges, catching Arnautovic with a stray arm before receiving an unpunished studs-up challenge from Mark Noble. The tension proved too much for Arnautovic as the winger caught Saints defender Stephens in the face with his arm and was promptly shown a straight red card – just as he was against the same opposition while at Stoke City last season.

His petulance was compounded within five minutes as former Saints defender Jose Fonte dragged down Steven Davis in the area, allowing Tadic to fire the spot-kick through Hart's legs.

There was still time for the Hammers to pull one back on the stroke of half-time with Hernandez punishing Forster for failing to hold Antonio's half-volley.Gabbiadini exploded back into life on the hour as his long-range attempt crashed against the crossbar, while Tadic was also denied a second by Hart's sharp near-post save.

Those near-misses appeared costly when Hernandez again showed his poacher's instinct, tucking away at point-blank range after Forster pushed Diafra Sakho's effort against the bar.

A stunned Southampton only recovered in the closing moments, with Redmond shooting against the crossbar before Austin was gifted the chance to seal a dramatic victory.

Valverde calls on Barca to support Messi after Suarez injury

Ernesto Valverde has called on his Barcelona team to help star man Lionel Messi as they cope with the absence of the departed Neymar and injured Luis Suarez.

Barca were thrashed 5-1 on aggregate by rivals Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana, with their misery compounded by Suarez suffering a knee injury that will see him miss four or five weeks.

Now, ahead of their LaLiga opener against Real Betis, Barca have only Messi remaining of their famed 'MSN' strike force and Valverde wants his other players to contribute.

"Messi is the best player in the world - we are lucky - but we all have to help him," he told a pre-match news conference."We have to make him feel at ease so he can play his game and make his team shine. He needs a compact group around him."

Messi lined up alongside Suarez in a two-man attack for the second leg of the Supercopa, but Valverde has been considering his options since losing the Uruguay international. "I know very clearly how I will replace Suarez," he added. "He's a big loss, we know his ability, but we hope to replace him with some security.

"We have players to do that and we'll see if we can get him back soon."

Juventus 3 Cagliari 0: Buffon saves Serie A's first VAR penalty in comfortable win

    4363033500000578-4805606-Paulo_Dybala_scores_his_third_goal_in_a_week_in_Juventus_3_0_ope-a-65_1503167934229.jpg

Gianluigi Buffon added to his legendary status in Italian football by saving the first penalty awarded via VAR in Serie A as Juventus began their title defence with a 3-0 home win over Cagliari.

Veteran Juve skipper and Italy international Buffon denied Diego Farias from 12 yards after on-field official Fabio Maresca used video technology to award Cagliari a first-half spot-kick following Alex Sandro's tackle from behind on Duje Cop.It proved a costly miss for Massimo Rastelli's side, who were already trailing to the champions following Mario Mandzukic's opener in the 12th minute.

Paulo Dybala added to Cagliari's frustrations when he picked out the top corner on the stroke of half-time, with calls for handball in the build-up from the visitors ignored by the referee.

Argentina international Dybala was denied a second by the crossbar early in the second half, but compatriot Gonzalo Higuain got on the scoreboard as Juve bounced back from their Supercoppa Italiana defeat to Lazio in fine fashion.

Blaise Matuidi was handed a Juve debut from the bench after completing his €20million move from Paris Saint-Germain on Friday, getting 20 minutes to help see out a 38th successive Serie A home match without defeat for Massimiliano Allegri's men.

Miralem Pjanic curled an excellent free-kick narrowly wide, but Juve only had to wait until the 12th minute for the opening goal. Mandzukic guided a lovely right-footed volley from Stephan Lichtsteiner's right-wing cross beyond Alessio Cragno to put Juve ahead.

Paolo Farago fired over after Buffon saved a powerful shot from Farias before Cagliari had a fantastic chance to equalise when referee Maresca awarded them a penalty following a video review of Sandro's tackle on Cop.

Farias stuttered in his run-up and placed a poor spot-kick close enough to Buffon for him to save, and Juve punished the visitors further by adding to their tally before the break.Pjanic sent an exquisite pass down the middle for Dybala, who was deemed to have controlled with his chest before beating Cragno with a fine finish into the top-right corner.

Within two minutes of the restart Dybala came agonisingly close to his second when, at the end of a flowing move, his cross-goal strike bounced down and out off the bar, with Mandzukic's follow-up header held by Cragno.

Farago volleyed a rare opportunity for Cagliari over the top of Buffon's goal, and Higuain showed him how to finish five minutes later. At the end of a brilliant move involving substitute Sami Khedira and Sandro, Higuain placed a cross-goal shot through the legs of Marco Andreolli and into the bottom-right corner.

The Argentine was replaced by debutant Matuidi in the 70th minute, while Douglas Costa made his first Serie A appearance since joining from Bayern Munich by replacing Juan Cuadrado.

Dybala drilled narrowly wide at the end of a sweeping move in the 93rd minute, but Juve had already done enough to begin their bid for a seventh successive Scudetto with three points.

Stoke City 1 Arsenal 0: Jese hits winner in dream debut

    436355DF00000578-4805500-image-a-26_1503164721376.jpg

Jese Rodriguez scored the winner on a dream debut as Stoke City downed Arsenal with a controversial 1-0 victory at the bet365 Stadium. The forward, loaned by Stoke from Paris Saint-Germain, struck early in the second half with an impressive finish as part of a lively performance.

Arsenal were aggrieved when Alexandre Lacazette had an equaliser ruled out for offside in a contentious decision. And that moment proved decisive as the Gunners were unable to repeat their heroics from last week's opener against Leicester City to salvage a result.

The two teams now have three points from their first two matches. Arsenal, who were without the injured Alexis Sanchez, have not won their first two games in a Premier League season since 2009 as they suffer an early blow to their title hopes.

Jese started as one of two Stoke changes and he was the first to threaten after Darren Fletcher's pass played him in, the ex-Real Madrid forward denied when Petr Cech rushed out to save.

Jack Butland was called into action to keep out Danny Welbeck's first-time strike, shortly before the lively Jese led a counterattack that resulted in Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting firing straight at Cech at the other end.

Stoke lost Xherdan Shaqiri to injury midway through the first half, Mark Hughes going with Saido Berahino – dropped from the starting XI after last week's loss to Everton - to replace him as Choupo-Moting, who had started down the middle, moved out wide in a re-shuffle.

Arsenal were dominating possession and Butland had to make a point-blank save after a volley from Aaron Ramsey – in as one of two changes from the Gunners – after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's free-kick had set him up, while Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross missed the target with a good headed chance as the match reached half-time level.

But Stoke moved in front within 90 seconds of the restart, Arsenal allowing too much space for Jese to play a neat one-two with Berahino before sweeping a first-time, left-footed finish into the bottom corner.

Arsenal initially responded positively and had a penalty appeal for a Kurt Zouma handball turned down after Ramsey's header across goal had struck the on-loan Chelsea defender.Butland was unconvincing as he saved from Hector Bellerin, shortly before Welbeck sent a looping header over in space.

But Stoke almost put the result beyond doubt on the break, Berahino's header from Erik Pieters' left-wing cross impressively saved by Cech's outstretched hand.

Arsenal turned to Olivier Giroud from the bench with 24 minutes left, the France striker replacing Sead Kolasinac in a tactical switch and joining Lacazette in attack.
Giroud had an immediate impact, setting up Welbeck, who was denied by Butland from close range. After Stoke withdrew Jese, there was huge controversy with 18 minutes remaining, Lacazette firing an emphatic finish into the top corner from Giroud's flick, only to be flagged for offside in an extremely close decision.

Lacazette was replaced along with Granit Xhaka as Arsene Wenger made a last throw of the dice by bringing on Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi.

Hughes fumed that Shkodran Mustafi went unpunished for a hard late tackle on Pieters, before Giroud headed wide from Nacho Monreal's stoppage-time cross as the Gunners missed their last chance to grab an equaliser.

No news on Coutinho despite reported new Barcelona bid, says Klopp

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says there is no further news on Philippe Coutinho's future in the wake of a £114 million offer from Barcelona. The Catalans have seen their latest bid, which was claimed to have been structured using a number of clauses and bonus payments, immediately rejected by Liverpool this week.

The club's stance has always been that Coutinho is not for sale, despite the Brazil star having submitted a transfer request, with Klopp saying on Friday that he sees no reason for the player to want to leave.Klopp is in contact with Liverpool's owners about the situation and insists there has been no development over the last few days.

"Nothing new from the injury side and if I speak to the owners, I don't think this is the situation where I should talk about it," he said when asked about Coutinho, who remains sidelined with a back problem."I'm informed about everything that happens in the club but nothing changed. I don't say there was another bid, only that nothing changed."

Klopp was speaking after his side battled to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Anfield, with Sadio Mane scoring the only goal of the game to seal their first league win of the season.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss was dumbfounded by the suggestion that the Reds had already been facing scrutiny in the wake of last week's 3-3 draw with Watford, but he did praise his side for producing an improved defensive display.

He continued: "Obviously my decision not to read the English press was the best decision of my life. Were we already under pressure? 'All the criticism around'?"The defending was outstanding. Crystal Palace started playing football last week and then Huddersfield Town were 2-0 up and they went a little more direct. I think we defended this outstanding, good. "That was one problem we had against Watford: we were too early, too deep.

"The first half could have been better, 100 per cent. Offensive football is about making the right decision at the right moment and we didn't see the spaces often enough. But we showed the players at half-time where the spaces were."Andrew Robertson performed well on his competitive debut, while youngster Joe Gomez produced a strong showing at right-back, and Klopp was delighted to see his decision to rotate his full-backs pay off.

"Everybody could see how good Robbo, especially with a few more sessions, can be, especially in offensive situations. You can put a lot of pressure on yourself and he did really well," he said.

Girona 2 Atletico Madrid 2: 10-man Atleti battle to draw after Griezmann sees red

    Atletico-de-Madrids-Uruguayan-defender.jpg

Atletico Madrid snatched an unlikely 2-2 draw at LaLiga newcomers Girona after Antoine Griezmann was sent off at Montilivi.A pair of headers in the space of three first-half minutes from Uruguay international Cristhian Stuani had the Catalan club within touching distance of a remarkable triumph.

Victory seemed virtually assured for Girona after Griezmann collected a second yellow card for dissent immediately after being booked for diving, marking his first ever red card in LaLiga. But substitute Angel Correa rifled in from the edge of the area at the end of a brilliant solo run in the 78th minute and a previously nerveless showing from Pablo Machin's men wobbled in untimely fashion.

Goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz was culpable as Stuani's countryman Jose Gimenez converted Koke's free-kick and embarrassment was averted for Diego Simeone's side.

Both teams observed a pre-match minute's silence to honour the 14 people killed by Thursday's terror attacks in the region before Girona began in composed fashion.

Machin's men were methodical in their work, unruffled by failing to create early chances, and they hit the front after 22 minutes.Borja Garcia worked possession back to Alex Granell, whose searching cross from the left was expertly headed home by Stuani.

Girona were in dreamland three minutes later as Stuani won a free-kick on the same flank and nodded in when Gimenez badly misjudged his clearance.Yannick Carrasco tried to muster a response for the visitors, with former Athletic Bilbao keeper Iraizoz keeping out his bouncing effort from the edge of the box.

Remarkably, matters almost deteriorated further for Atletico four minutes before half-time.Jan Oblak completed a double save by brilliantly changing direction to paw Borja's close-range effort off the line after Pablo Maffeo's deflected cross caused havoc.

Saul Niguez's 50th minute yellow card for hacking down tormentor-in-chief Stuani neatly summarised Atletico's frustration, although Griezmann – badly isolated during a first half where he was restricted to 12 touches – almost reduced the arrears with a spectacular overhead kick that flashed narrowly wide.

Simeone sent on attacking midfielder Correa in place of full-back Juanfran in an attempt to loosen Girona's firm grip on the contest, although an act of self-sabotage would see their evening unravel further.

Griezmann burst into the box and went to ground as Iraizoz plunged at his feet. Referee Juan Martinez Munuera deemed that to be simulation and the 26-year-old's apparently sharp tongue sealed his fate.

The type of inspiration moment Atletico might have hoped to see Griezmann produce belatedly arrived courtesy of Correa's stunning solo effort. Girona responded by tearing up the other end, with Stuani spurning a hat-trick chance on the end of Portu's cross.

It was a miss he would regret when Iraizoz came for Koke's left-wing delivery and failed to get there as Gimenez planted a header into the net.Marc Muniesa fired over as the hosts tried to salvage victory in stoppage time, while Olarenwaju Kayode – one of five loan signings from Manchester City – forced Oblak to excel himself once again in a breathless finale.

Dropped points in their opening matches against Alaves and Leganes left Atleti playing catch-up in last season's title race and, with two more games on the road to come and a Griezmann suspension to contend with, Simeone's relief with be tempered by anxiety over history swiftly repeating itself.

'We never give up' - Simeone lauds Atletico's escape act at Girona

Diego Simeone hailed Atletico Madrid's fighting qualities after they salvaged a 2-2 draw at La Liga newcomers Girona despite having Antoine Griezmann sent off.

Cristhian Stuani's quickfire first-half brace left Atletico reeling and a red card for Griezmann, booked for dissent immediately after receiving a caution for simulation in the 67th minute, appeared to seal their fate. But substitute Angel Correa rifled in at the end of a solo run with 12 minutes to play and Jose Gimenez converted Koke's 85th-minute free-kick.

Atleti still needed a superb stoppage-time save by Jan Oblak from Olarenwaju Kayode to escape with a share of the spoils but Simeone was satisfied – given the circumstances – at his post-match news conference.

"At 2-0 down many people thought the game was over, even more so with 10 players," he said."We never give up. We got a result which looked impossible."Nobody gives you anything here. Newly promoted teams always make it very uncomfortable."

Simeone was in no mood to mull over or speculate upon the precise reasons for Griezmann's first dismissal in 253 La Liga games. "I have not spoken with him," he said, refusing to comment further. While keen to praise his team's performance, Girona's late collapse left a bitter taste for Simeone's opposite number Pablo Machin.

"I'm not happy, the draw does little for me," he said, having highlighted fatigue as a factor for his men during the closing stages."We deserved to win the match. We have created chances against a solid team like Atletico.

"This is the way to go. Despite not having won, we are a new team and this game gives us confidence to continue working.

    Wenger: Arsenal squad not manageable

Arsene Wenger says his first thought is not to sign new players as he reflected on Arsenal's 1-0 defeat to Stoke City at bet365 Stadium.Jese Rodriguez's debut strike 90 seconds into the second half gave Stoke the surprise victory on Saturday, although Wenger was unimpressed with the decision to disallow an Alexandre Lacazette goal for offside.

The Arsenal manager was asked for an update on the club's transfer business following the loss and reiterated that any immediate movement would involve players going out, rather than in.

"I expect to sell players first, that is all," Wenger told reporters. "I expect some players to go because we have too many players and it is not manageable. "Many clubs are in this situation which is why the transfer market is quiet. We have 33 players at the moment, and that is too many players.

"I am not in transfer mode after a game like that. We are more disappointed at the moment rather than thinking about buying players straight away tonight."Wenger also felt Hector Bellerin should have had a penalty in the first half after going down under a challenge from Mame Biram Diouf.

Asked if he thought the incident was a spot-kick, Wenger said: "Of course, but we know we don't get penalties - we know that."Look at the numbers and you will see. Look at the statistics and that is it.Penalties - we had last year the highest number of penalties against us at home by a mile and the lowest number for us.

"So I give you just the numbers, I don't say anything else." But Wenger was also critical of Arsenal's defending for Jese's goal, as the Gunners suffered a defeat that puts them under pressure going into next Sunday's match away to Liverpool.

"It is the kind of night where you are angry because not only did we not score with the number of chances we had, we made stupid mistakes centrally," he said."First by losing the ball and then afterwards we didn't defend properly for the goal.On top of that, I think we were unlucky with some of the referee’s decisions because we scored a regular goal [by Lacazette].

"In football, when you don't win, you can only look at yourself. Last week [the 4-3 win against Leicester City] we conceded two goals on corners. "They only had three shots on goal, so I don't feel that we defended that badly. On set-pieces, yes.

Conte: I want to lead Chelsea out in the new Stamford Bridge

Antonio Conte says that it is a “challenge” for him and Chelsea to keep working together for long enough to see him walk out as the manager at the new Stamford Bridge, once it is built.

Chelsea will undergo a huge £500million redevelopment of their stadium to boost the capacity to over 60,000 seats after overcoming many significant hurdles in the past year.

Tottenham, who are Chelsea’s opponents on Sunday, will play the first ever Premier League game at Wembley Stadium before moving into their own new stadium built on the site of the old White Hart Lane.

And Conte is keen to lead out Chelsea in their new surroundings, as counterpart Mauricio Pochettino is expected to do for Spurs at their new home."I want to break this bad record [of sackings at Chelsea]. I must be positive. When you start a job with a new club, I hope to stay in this club for many years," Conte said at a news conference at Cobham Training Centre. "It means you have the possibility to work with the same players, to improve these players year by year.

"Why not? I hope [to manage Chelsea into their new stadium]. I hope because this could be a fantastic challenge for me and also for the club, to stay together and also to play with this team in a new stadium.

"Honestly, the new stadium will be great, but I love a lot Stamford Bridge, also to play in the stadium. I feel Stamford Bridge is like my house."Chelsea’s stadium redevelopment is still awaiting a start date despite significant progress being made. The Blues will likely relocate to Wembley temporarily just like Spurs have done this season.

However, Spurs haven't had much success playing at Wembley in recent seasons, recording a number of underwhelming performances at the home of England's national side.

They most recently they lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final there and Conte sympathises with the struggles of getting used to a new ground - after being the first manager to lead Juventus out at the Juventus Stadium.

"For sure it was a key moment for Juventus,” he added. “I think there is a big difference, because the Delle Alpi, I played a lot in this stadium as a player. I think that it wasn't a real stadium. It was very cold and you don't feel the passion of the fans because the stand was very far from the pitch.

"Yes, for sure it's not the same when you play not in your stadium. It's different. But if you want to have another good step to improve the club, you must have this type of situation."

:yes:Versatility key to Man Utd title push – Mourinho

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho believes the versatility of his side will prove a major asset in the weeks ahead. The Red Devils have made their best start to a season since 2007, recording 4-0 wins over West Ham and Swansea in the Premier League.

Although those two victories have been achieved with relative ease, Mourinho is aware there are tougher tests to come. But the Portuguese believes his squad are primed for those challenges as they are capable of playing in several different manners.“We had a good pre-season. We work well and we are ready to play in different systems,” he said after Saturday’s win in Wales.

“When we saw them with five at the back, we thought: 'Let's try to explore the advantage of playing with three up front'.“But we are ready at any moment if we were in difficult we were ready at any moment to change and also play with three at the back.“So we are confident with the work we did.”
