Leicester City 2 Liverpool 3: Classy Coutinho helps to halt Reds slump

    44A21CF700000578-4913034-image-a-21_1506188445190.jpg

Philippe Coutinho inspired Liverpool to a thrilling 3-2 Premier League win over Leicester City as the visitors fought off a Foxes fightback that saw Jamie Vardy miss a chance to equalise from the penalty spot.

Having already brilliantly created the opener for Mohamed Salah, Coutinho netted for the Reds for the first time since they rejected advances from Barcelona for his services in the recent transfer window.

There had been pressure on Jurgen Klopp and his side coming into this game after a four-game winless run in all competitions, but those concerns were largely forgotten by the midway point of the first half at the KingPower Stadium as the travelling supporters sang Coutinho's name.

Leicester's determined nature meant that it was still far too soon to consider the job done, however, and Shinji Okazaki – a scorer in his side's midweek EFL Cup win over the Merseysiders – pulled a goal back before the break.

Craig Shakespeare had acknowledged that his men benefited from the half-time withdrawal of Coutinho in Tuesday's clash, but Liverpool showed they can threaten on multiple fronts as Jordan Henderson coolly converted at the end of a speedy counter-attack.

That strike kick-started a manic five-minute spell in which Vardy both scored and saw a spot-kick saved by Simon Mignolet, who had conceded the foul with a clumsy charge from off his line.

Liverpool held on, though, and have Sadio Mane back in the fold ahead of a tough week in which they must travel to Spartak Moscow and Newcastle United – the Senegalese's talents would have suited this breathless encounter as both the Reds' flaws and qualities were on show, visibly distressing Klopp at times.

Dejan Lovren's shoddy early defending allowed Vardy to stay onside and run through on the left, firing the first effort of note at Mignolet.

But Liverpool's response was strong. Emre Can's blast struck the base of the left-hand post and Salah inexplicably fired a simple rebound wide as Kasper Schmeichel helplessly looked on.Salah quickly made amends, though, racing onto Coutinho's fine deep cross to steer a header inside the right-hand upright and beyond Schmeichel.

Back came Leicester and Mignolet was fortunate to escape as he dallied under pressure from Vardy, presenting Okazaki with a shooting opportunity that the goalkeeper then did well to block.Coutinho's class soon told again, however. Wilfred Ndidi's foul handed the brilliant Brazilian a 25-yard free-kick which he duly swept into the net.

Okazaki was ruled to have strayed offside as he netted at the other end and Roberto Firmino then dragged wide, with Liverpool threatening to accelerate out of sight.

But their lead was halved on the stroke of half-time as Mignolet saved Andy King's header, but then hopelessly flapped at the subsequent corner, allowing the ball to drop for Okazaki to stab over the line. The game restarted at the same frantic pace and, although the chances initially fell with less frequency, an incredible spell followed.

A lightning Liverpool counter on the right saw substitute Daniel Sturridge tee up Henderson for a calm low finish, but Klopp's fist-pumping had scarcely ceased when Leicester hit back.

Demarai Gray's volley was parried by Mignolet for Vardy to nod into the net and the Liverpool goalkeeper quickly made another error, conceding a penalty with a rash challenge on the England forward. However, having lost out to Vardy on both the goal and the penalty award, Mignolet redeemed himself by blocking his powerful spot kick, which was hit straight down the middle.

That save encouraged further attacking play from both sides, with Schmeichel denying the lively Sturridge and the hosts' late endeavours unrewarded at the other end.

Stoke City 0 Chelsea 4: Magic Morata hits hat-trick

    449F9A1000000578-4912782-image-a-11_1506177150201.jpg

Alvaro Morata continued his stunning start to life at Chelsea with a hat-trick as the Premier League champions sealed an impressive 4-0 victory away to Stoke City.

Chelsea scored from their only two shots in the first half, Morata putting them in front after just 82 seconds before fellow Spain international Pedro netted his second goal in his last three games.

Stoke increased the pressure after the break, but former Real Madrid striker Morata doubled his tally with a brilliant solo goal to end home hopes of a revival.
And Morata then made it six goals in as many Premier League appearances for Chelsea as he sealed his hat-trick with eight minutes remaining.

Antonio Conte's side remain three points behind the two Manchester clubs at the top of the table as they continue the defence of their title.Stoke took four points from two home games against Arsenal and Manchester United, but this heavy defeat leaves them with only one win from their opening six fixtures.

With Kurt Zouma ineligible to face his parent club and Kevin Wimmer out injured, Stoke fielded a patched-up defence that included Glen Johnson as part of the back three.

And the hosts' new backline was caught out almost immediately, with a long ball from Cesar Azpilicueta – deputising as captain with Gary Cahill on the bench – allowing Morata to race clear and beat Jack Butland with a simple finish.

After a spell of relative quiet, Chelsea pounced to make it two on the half-hour mark. Darren Fletcher's mistake proved costly, the former Manchester United midfielder chesting the ball straight into the path of Pedro, who took one touch and sent an early finish past a helpless Butland from 18 yards.

Stoke's initial response was strong and Xherdan Shaqiri should have done better with a free-kick from 20 yards, while Mame Biram Diouf's acrobatic overhead kick narrowly missed the target as the hosts went into the break two behind.
After Joe Allen sent a drive just over, Stoke tested Thibaut Courtois for the first time with Shaqiri's shot from the edge of the area.

Conte then brought on Cahill for Marcos Alonso after the wing-back got away with a challenge on Diouf shortly after being booked for a foul on Allen. Mark Hughes, meanwhile, added Peter Crouch to the mix and the veteran striker made an instant impression, setting up a stretching Diouf to fire over.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had a penalty claim turned down after blocked by Cahill while the defender was on the ground at the corner of the box, before Courtois received treatment after an awkward landing from an aerial duel.
Stoke continued to press, with Fletcher's poor afternoon continuing as he somehow failed to convert Shaqiri's deep free-kick from six yards.

It was game over at the other end with 13 minutes remaining, as Morata capitalised on another defensive mistake. This time Johnson was guilty, his error allowing the Spain striker to gather possession just inside the Stoke half, charge into the box almost unchallenged and beat Butland from a tight angle.

A last-ditch Stoke clearance stopped substitute Eden Hazard's cross-shot from finding Morata, but the 24-year-old was not to be denied his hat-trick. The goal of the game saw another sub Cesc Fabregas chip a precise pass into the box, which Azplicueta chested across goal for his second assist of the match, with Morata bundling in from close range.

The in-form forward almost had a fourth before the match was over, firing inches wide after another Fabregas pass before Johnson's vital goal-line clearance stopped him from converting Victor Moses' cross at the far post.

Crouch was perhaps fortunate only to see yellow for a high tackle on Fabregas, but the accolades will go to Morata, with his six goals and two assists from his first six top-flight games equalling Diego Costa's club record for goal involvements.

Borussia Dortmund 6 Borussia Monchengladbach 1: Aubameyang hat-trick inspires Dortmund rout

    wire-1402051-1506192851-242_634x436.jpg

Borussia Dortmund returned to the Bundesliga summit after producing a scintillating attacking display to crush Borussia Monchengladbach 6-1 at Signal Iduna Park.

Peter Bosz's side had briefly lost top spot following Hoffenheim's 2-0 win over Schalke earlier on Saturday, but an imperious performance secured all three points against a shell-shocked Gladbach.

Two superb goals from Maximilian Philipp got them on their way before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who hit the woodwork three times, delivered a striking masterclass to score a hat-trick.

Despite Dortmund's dominance, Gladbach carved out a number of openings themselves and scored a consolation through Lars Stindl just after the hour – the first goal Dortmund have conceded in the league this season. Julien Weigl then scored the game's best goal with a dipping volley from distance with a little over 10 minutes remaining.

The win sets Dortmund up perfectly for their mouth-watering Champions League clash against Real Madrid on Tuesday. Gladbach, meanwhile, will need to pick themselves up for the visit of Hannover next weekend.

Dortmund dominated possession in the early stages, but an incisive counter attack by Gladbach after 10 minutes created the game's first clear chance.

Thorgan Hazard took advantage of an error by Weigl to drive towards the Dortmund area, but his powerful strike was too close to Roman Burki, who comfortably parried away.

Dortmund had to wait until the 19th minute before carving out their first opportunity. Sokratis Papastathopoulos created enough room on the edge of the area to scuff a half-volley towards goal, but Tobias Sippel was equal to it.Christian Pulisic saw his deflected shot tipped over the bar by Sippel as the hosts cranked up the pressure.

Sippel then produced a stunning save to deny Aubameyang from point-blank range after the Gabon striker had latched onto Mario Gotze's clever header. From the resulting corner, Aubameyang ghosted in at the back post, only to be denied by the woodwork.

In an action-packed few minutes for the striker, he turned provider for the opener as his precise cross was wonderfully converted on the volley by Philipp. Philipp then scored his second in the 38th minute after taking advantage of some generous defending from the visitors.

An interception on the edge of the area allowed Jeremy Toljan the space down Gladbach's left to pull back for Philipp to expertly dispatch the ball into the top corner.

Aubameyang was denied again by the post, via a remarkable save from Sippel, but he finally got on the scoresheet a minute before the break.

Sokratis strode out of defence before playing a defence-splitting pass into Gotze's path, and the Germany international calmly rolled the ball across goal for Aubameyang to slot into an empty net.Any thoughts that Dortmund would let up their relentless approach in the second half were dispelled four minutes after the break as Aubameyang scored his second.

His header from Gotze's free-kick cannoned back off the post but fell fortuitously for him to tap into an unguarded net again. Aubameyang's hat-trick came in the 62nd minute, as he ran onto Mahmoud Dahoud's throughball to round Sippel and squeeze in from an acute angle.

Gladbach barely had time to breathe in the second period, but they found a consolation goal soon after when Stindl slotted home after good work from Hazard down Dortmund's right.

But Weigl had the final say with a stunning late volley as Dortmund gleefully reclaimed top spot.

Deportivo Alaves 1 Real Madrid 2: Ceballos off the mark as champions bounce back

    44A1187900000578-0-image-a-2_1506180037230.jpg

Dani Ceballos scored his first Real Madrid goals on his full debut as the LaLiga champions responded to their shock midweek defeat with a much-needed 2-1 win at Deportivo Alaves.

Madrid's stuttering start to their domestic title defence continued with a 1-0 reverse against Real Betis at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday, but Zinedine Zidane's side have so far performed better away from home this term and that again proved to be the case in the Basque Country.

Cristiano Ronaldo started his second game of the week – despite a looming Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund – but Madrid's hero was Ceballos, who netted the opener and then provided a quick response to Manu Garcia's 40th-minute equaliser. That was Alaves' first goal of the campaign and the second could well have arrived here as they twice hit the woodwork in the second half, contributing to a nervy finish for Zidane's men.

Ronaldo and his team-mates were similarly profligate at the other end – also twice striking the post – but their failings ultimately mattered little as Madrid moved back to within four points of rivals and league leaders Barcelona, who play at Girona later on Saturday.

With a raucous crowd feeding off Madrid's early nervousness, Alaves started on the front foot and Keylor Navas was required to parry clear after a corner was flicked towards his near post. But Ceballos soon eased the pressure on the visitors with the opener, wriggling out of a challenge with Ibai Gomez in the area to slide a finish inside the left-hand post.

Madrid quickly rediscovered their swagger and Lucas Vazquez should have added a second as he turned Marco Asensio's pinpoint cross over the top from close range, before Ronaldo missed the target and Nacho drew a smart stop from Fernando Pacheco.

A Madrid side missing the injured Marcelo at left-back then conceded the equaliser from that flank as Munir El Haddadi's centre invited Alaves captain Manu Garcia to send a thunderous header into the top-right corner.

However, the hosts were level for only three minutes. Pacheco came to challenge Ronaldo for a deep cross and succeeded only in knocking the ball into Ceballos' path for a low, sweeping finish.

Ronaldo clipped the outside of the post with a snapshot shortly after half-time and Isco then opted against presenting the Portugal forward with a clear opening as he bore down on goal, instead going alone and shooting at the legs of Pacheco. A determined Ronaldo hit the upright again with a wonderful curling strike, before a rare attack at the other end saw Alaves likewise hit the woodwork as Alfonso Pedraza's shot deflected beyond Navas and against the crossbar.

Sergio Ramos unbelievably blazed over a gaping goal when Pacheco spilled the ball at his feet and it looked as though he and Madrid might pay the price for that miss when Pedraza ran through moments later.

But the Alaves substitute's stab under Navas bounced away off the frame of the goal again and Madrid escaped with the points.

:love:Southampton 0 Manchester United 1: Lukaku strikes again in unconvincing victory

    449FE5A700000578-4912882-image-a-36_1506178909337.jpg

Romelu Lukaku scored his eighth goal in as many games for Manchester United to seal a 1-0 victory away to Southampton on Saturday. The Belgium international converted a rebound in the first half to give Jose Mourinho's side a fifth win in six Premier League games and keep pace with Manchester City at the top of the table.

It was a largely unconvincing performance from the visitors, who made the most of their one clear-cut opportunity in a comfortable first half and spent the majority of the second on the back foot.

Lukaku scored after seeing a header saved by Fraser Forster, prompting a repeat of the controversial chant from the away section in support of the former Everton man, but United created little otherwise in a disjointed display and Mourinho was sent to the stands in the dying minutes.

Mauricio Pellegrino's side enjoyed 70 per cent of the possession in the second half but struggled to find a way through United's rearguard, underlining the attacking problems of a team who have failed to score in nine of their last 11 home league games.

United move on to 16 points, the same as league leaders City, but Mourinho will no doubt want improvement from his side when they travel to Russia to take on CSKA Moscow in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Nathan Redmond flashed a half-volley over as Saints started in encouraging fashion, but United snatched control of the half on 20 minutes.

Ashley Young, starting again at left-back, danced his way into space and curled a fine cross onto the head of Lukaku and, although Fraser Forster saved his effort superbly, the Belgian had the simple task of scuffing the rebound into the unguarded net.A large number of United fans celebrated with the controversial chant about Lukaku, despite the player and club asking for them to refrain from singing it this week following a complaint by anti-discrimination body Kick It Out.

United looked comfortable as they kept Saints at bay for the remainder of the half, but the home side stepped up their pursuit of an equaliser after the break and Oriol Romeu flashed a shot wide when the visitors failed to clear a corner.

Redmond then cut inside from the left and fired in a low shot across goal, forcing David de Gea to save well and gather the rebound away from the lurking Shane Long, before the Republic of Ireland striker was denied a clear run at goal by a strong shoulder charge from Phil Jones that went unpunished.

Mourinho responded to the growing pressure by bringing on Ander Herrera in midfield, and United should have snatched a second goal on the break, with Lukaku shooting straight at Forster's feet after being played in by Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Fellaini cleared a Dusan Tadic header from just in front of the line and the winger dragged a low cross inches past the right-hand post moments later, before Herrera blasted over the crossbar when given time and space to pick his spot on a rare United attack.

Saints kept up the pressure in the closing minutes but United held firm for an important – though far from impressive – three points, even as Mourinho was ordered into the stands in injury time by referee Craig Pawson.

Montpellier 0 Paris Saint-Germain 0: 100 per cent record ends in Neymar's absence

The absence of Neymar coincided with Paris Saint-Germain losing their 100 per cent start to the Ligue 1 season as they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at Montpellier.

World-record signing Neymar was ruled out of the trip to Stade de la Mosson with a reported foot injury and PSG were unable to pose the same threat that has seen them score 24 goals in six matches with him in the line-up.PSG now hold just a one-point lead at the top of Ligue 1 after defending champions Monaco thumped Lille 4-0 on Friday.

Julian Draxler replaced Neymar in the front three and was at the heart of the brightest moments for Unai Emery's side, but they ultimately paid the price for failing to make the most of their dominance in possession.

Kylian Mbappe, nominated for the 2017 Golden Boy award this week, was troublesome for Montpellier with his direct running causing problems, though his touch let him down when Marco Verratti - back from a three-game ban - released him in the box in the second half.

It was a common theme for PSG, who were denied a penalty when Pedro Mendes appeared to foul Edinson Cavani in the box in the closing stages and will need to improve when they entertain Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday.

PSG started sluggishly but should have taken the lead in the 16th minute. Draxler dribbled to the right side of the box and cut a pass back for Cavani, who produced an air-shot from 12 yards to highlight his typically inconsistent finishing.Mbappe switched from the left to right wing as he attempted to spark something by running at the Montpellier defence, but the resilient hosts continued to hold firm.

PSG started to improve and Thiago Silva failed to find the target with a header from a corner by Draxler, who also set up Mbappe as the teenager raced away on the left, beat Hilton and saw his shot blocked by Mendes. It was goalless at half-time, though, after an in-swinging free-kick from Draxler proved too high for Thiago Motta and out of reach for Marquinhos at the back post.

PSG finally got a shot on target two minutes after the restart when Ellyes Skhiri ceded possession 20 yards from his own goal and Mbappe forced Benjamin Lecomte down to his left to make a save.

There was more urgency about Unai Emery's side and Lecomte got an important touch to a lofted cross from Mbappe that denied Cavani a simple tap in. Verratti clipped an exquisite pass over the top for Mbappe, whose poor first touch denied him a chance to get a decent shot away. He still stabbed the ball into the centre and an attempted clearance deflected narrowly over off Lecomte, much to the hosts' relief.Emery sent on Lucas Moura for Draxler and replaced Thomas Meunier with Dani Alves and PSG were denied a penalty with 10 minutes remaining.

Mendes - already on a yellow card - sent Cavani tumbling in the box but referee Clement Turpin deemed there was a touch from the Montpellier defender, enabling them to hold firm for an unlikely point.

West Ham 2 Tottenham 3: Kane at the double to play derby hero again

    1506171786519_lc_galleryImage_Tottenham_s_Christian_Eri.JPG

Harry Kane ruled the roost in another London derby for Tottenham as they survived a late West Ham rally to claim a 3-2 win on Saturday.

England striker Kane moved his tally in London derbies to 21 goals in 29 games with a quickfire first-half double as Spurs banished memories of last season's London Stadium defeat, which effectively ended their Premier League title charge.Though their Wembley woes have been well-documented, this performance at a stadium they could have called home was a reminder of Spurs' ruthlessness.

Kane's goals arrived inside four minutes of each other, with Christian Eriksen rewarded for a neat performance with a well-taken effort that makes him the Premier League's top-scoring Dane with 33 strikes.

Spurs were given a late scare as Javier Hernandez headed home and Serge Aurier, making his first Premier League start, was dismissed for two bookable offences, with Cheikhou Kouyate thumping home a header to make a third win of the season hard-earned for Spurs.

West Ham's first defeat in four will see them drop into the bottom three, with Slaven Bilic left to lament his side's inability to capitalise on a dominant early period of the game.

The hosts made early gains down the flank of Aurier, with the returning Marko Arnautovic denied a one-on-one by a superb recovery tackle from the Ivorian while also spurning two more promising openings on the left.

Kane's blushes were spared when he flicked wide from two yards, as the offside flag was raised, while West Ham were forced to shuffle the pack when a groin injury ended Michail Antonio's participation early and Andy Carroll came on.
Mark Noble and Moussa Sissoko were nose-to-nose as the latter reacted to a crunching tackle from the Hammers captain and the sudden lift in atmosphere seemed to switch Spurs into life as they went ahead.

West Ham were guilty of affording Christian Eriksen too much room, allowing him to pick out Dele Alli in the right channel, with an accurate cross giving Kane the chance to plant a header beyond the helpless Joe Hart.

That goal had come against the run of play, but Spurs were in complete control within four minutes as Hart saved Alli's close-range effort, only for the ball to magnetise towards Kane, who stroked home.

Spurs again had fortune on their side as they moved further ahead on the hour, Eriksen clipping home smartly after Kane's free-kick smashed off the post to Aurier, whose cross was deflected into the Dane's path.

Kane again hit the woodwork soon after, but the Hammers suddenly had life when Hernandez was allowed to roam the six-yard box unchecked and he headed home Jose Fonte's flick.Aurier had picked up a booking just before that goal and six minutes later a shaky game was ended early when he needlessly chopped down Carroll in midfield.

Pochettino replaced Eriksen with Harry Winks, perhaps with an eye on Tuesday's Champions League trip to APOEL, but Kouyate's bullet header brought the immediate task into sharp focus.

Bilic was itching on the touchline as Winston Reid blazed over on an angle with team-mates well-placed centrally, with Carroll seeing frantic appeals for a penalty rejected after getting a shove from Davinson Sanchez as the Hammers hopes went up in smoke as a fractious contest ended in a pointless squabble between the players.

Manchester City 5 Crystal Palace 0: Guardiola's men sink strugglers to go top

    44A159D100000578-4912892-image-a-63_1506181606766.jpg

Free-scoring Manchester City added to Crystal Palace's mounting misery with a 5-0 win at the Etihad Stadium, a result that sent Pep Guardiola's men top of the Premier League.

Palace are the only team without a goal in Europe's five major divisions this season after a sixth straight top-flight defeat, and the scale of the task facing the recently appointed Roy Hodgson is thrown into a stark light by a fixture list that places Manchester United and Chelsea next on their agenda.

Contrary to the final scoreline, Hodgson's men acquitted themselves well in the first half and should have led through Ruben Loftus-Cheek before a splendid opener from Leroy Sane arrived a minute before half-time.

Raheem Sterling's quickfire second-half brace put the result beyond any semblance of doubt and an overworked Wayne Hennessey in the Palace goal was unable to keep out Sergio Aguero's 79th-minute header from Sane's cross.

The goal moved Aguero to within one strike of Eric Brook's all-time club scoring record of 177 and an excellent fifth from substitute Fabian Delph extended the goal-difference advantage Guardiola's side enjoy over Manchester United at the summit to four.

Despite the array of City attacking talent on the field, they almost opened the scoring courtesy of a Palace defender in the seventh minute when Mamadou Sakho headed Kevin De Bruyne's testing cross against his own post.

Guardiola's men were not operating with the pleasing fluency of their recent outings but should have led in the 12th minute, with Fernandinho blasting straight at Hennessey after Nicolas Otamendi's attempt from a right-wing corner dropped to him seven yards out.

Hennessey was operating behind an amply stocked defence, well drilled by Hodgson, whose team nearly led in the 19th minute.Loftus-Cheek let fly from the edge of the area and his shot clipped a lunging Otamendi before bouncing clear off Ederson's right-hand post.

The Chelsea loanee then spurned a glorious chance on the end of Andros Townsend's deflected cross and an uncomfortable period for City was compounded by left-back Benjamin Mendy limping off with a knee injury.

Aguero lifted over left-footed when Sane presented him with the chance to score his 176th goal for the club before the Germany international took matters majestically into his own hands, touching David Silva's chipped return pass over Scott Dann and slotting home on the half volley.Sane turned provider six minute into the second period, Silva sliding a pass down the left channel for him to send over a low cross and hand Sterling a simple finish.

The England winger should have doubled his tally when he blasted into the side-netting shortly afterwards and Aguero shot too close to Hennessey at the end of a solo run. Those two players combined to make it 3-0 before the hour – Aguero knocking De Bruyne's raking ball back across goal for Sterling to convert.

Palace were rocking and Aguero released Sane into the box, where Hennessey stood firm despite his earlier protection having evaporated.

Guardiola remonstrated extensively after a Sane penalty claim fell on deaf ears with 15 minutes to play, but it was his slumped counterpart in the opposite dugout who could reflect on more genuine reasons for anguish by the time Aguero got in on the act.

Hodgson handed Delph his England debut in 2014 but would rather not have seen a career that has stalled through fitness woes in Manchester dazzlingly spark a minute from time, as he cut inside and looped a right-footed shot into the top corner.

Girona 0 Barcelona 3: Centurion Suarez seals Catalan derby triumph

    44A3517300000578-4913424-image-a-119_1506198712817.jpg

Luis Suarez scored on his 100th LaLiga appearance to help see off Girona 3-0 in the first top-flight derby between the two Catalan clubs.

A pair of own goals either side of half-time put Ernesto Valverde's side comfortably ahead before Suarez marked his milestone by wrapping up the three points.Girona skipper Aday Benitez was the victim for the opener when he deflected Jordi Alba's strike into his own net to gift the league leaders an early advantage.

And it was another own goal which doubled Barca's lead after the interval as Aleix Vidal's classy cut-back wriggled in off Girona goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz.

Suarez added the gloss with 20 minutes remaining to seal a sixth consecutive league victory, an impressive start they last managed in 2013-14.While far from perfect at the back, Valverde's men now sit four points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid.

The visitors had early joy down the right when Javier Mascherano found Vidal in behind, but the winger's attempted cross was crucially cut out by Iraizoz.Marc-Andre ter Stegen next produced a superb one-handed save low to his right to deny Douglas, while Suarez's inability to find a team-mate from a cut-back at the other end cost Barca a certain opener.Valverde's side did not have to wait long for the breakthrough, though, and it came courtesy of a huge slice of fortune.

After Iraizoz kept out Messi's free-kick, the veteran keeper was left with no chance from the resultant corner as Alba's speculative volley took a heavy deflection off Benitez on its way into the bottom-left corner.

Barca began to take control by the half-hour mark and only an in-form Iraizoz prevented them from doubling their advantage, the 36-year-old quick off his line to smother another chance for Alba.

Paulinho and Michael Olunga still found time to exchange wayward headers as an entertaining first half ended with the away side ahead. The lead became 2-0 almost immediately after the resumption when Vidal reached the by-line and attempted to find Suarez, who hurdled the back-heel pass and saw it trickle in via Iraizoz's legs.

Girona continued to pose a threat in the air with Douglas heading another opportunity high, while Olunga nodded straight at Ter Stegen just before the hour. But any hint of a comeback was soon extinguished thanks to Suarez. The striker was put clean through by Sergi Roberto and clinically picked out the bottom-left corner to make it 3-0.

With their perfect league record still intact, Barca will take plenty of confidence into their midweek Champions League trip to Sporting CP.

Juventus 4 Torino 0: Dybala stars again in rampant derby victory

    44A3F4B100000578-4913694-image-a-348_1506205504903.jpg

Paulo Dybala continued his scintillating form as his double helped Juventus thrash 10-man rivals Torino 4-0 in the first Derby della Mole of the Serie A season.Juve's mercurial number 10 got his first 16 minutes into Saturday's encounter at the Allianz Stadium, guiding home the opener in typically composed fashion.

With Torino's misery compounded by Daniele Baselli's dismissal midway through the first half, Massimiliano Allegri's men were soon hitting their stride - Miralem Pjanic's exquisite strike doubling their tally prior to the interval.

Alex Sandro was the next to get in on the act with a powerful header early in the second half, before Dybala made it 10 goals in six league matches this season with a stoppage-time strike that put the icing on the cake.

Salvatore Sirigu had tried to keep the scoreline respectable with a string of quality saves, though it was merely a matter of damage limitation as the defending champions continued their 100 per cent start in the league.

It is a win that keeps Juve level with pace-setters Napoli at the top of Serie A and Allegri's focus will now switch to getting his side's Champions League campaign back on track against Olympiacos on Wednesday.

Juve wasted no time in getting on the front foot, as Mario Mandzukic - replacing the out-of-form Gonzalo Higuain up front - was denied by Lyanco's last-ditch tackle inside 30 seconds.

The visitors' centre-back was in the thick of the action again moments later with a slack back-pass that almost caught out Sirigu, before Juan Cuadrado went close at the culmination of a driving run from the right.Torino threatened when a desperate block from Giorgio Chiellini prevented Iago Falque's strike reaching its target, but parity did not last much longer as the hosts took the lead.

Pjanic nipped in to rob Baselli of possession - Dybala latching onto the loose ball and proceeding to drill a low finish into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the area.Matters went from bad to worse for Baselli and Torino just eight minutes later, the midfielder picking up his second yellow card for a ridiculous lunge on Pjanic, having earlier been booked for tugging back Dybala.

Juve did not let up, and after Lycano's goal-line clearance denied Cuadrado, the hosts had their second five minutes before the break - Pjanic curling in a sublime 20-yard strike that gave Sirigu no chance after being teed up by the Colombia international.

Pjanic turned provider for the second time 12 minutes after the restart, whipping in a wonderful corner that Alex Sandro turned home with a thumping header.

Medhi Benatia should have added a fourth as Juve teased Sinisa Mihajlovic's deflated side, but Sirigu pulled off a superb stop to deny the defender from close range. Sirigu had to be at his best again with Juve bombarding his goal, managing to keep out a flurry of attempts from substitute Federico Bernadeschi, Mandzukic and Douglas Costa.

But Torino's goalkeeper would be beaten four a fourth time in the first minute of stoppage time, Dybala lofting in a delicate finish after connecting with a flick from Higuain, who had come off the bench, as Juve added further gloss to an emphatic victory.

Alba: Valverde managing Barca to perfection

Barcelona defender Jordi Alba has credited new boss Ernesto Valverde with masterminding the team's perfect start to La Liga. The Blaugrana notched up a sixth straight league victory against Girona on Saturday as Luis Suarez and a pair of own goals did the damage in a 3-0 away win.

Alba played a key part in the visitors' 17th-minute opener when his volley from outside the area was deflected in off Girona captain Aday Benitez.

The result sent Barca four points clear in first place, a blistering start Alba believes is a reflection of Valverde's influence since arriving to replace Luis Enrique in May."The coach is managing the squad to perfection, we are all getting a chance to play," Alba told Movistar.

"He is working with us very well. We are responding to his methods and, while there is a lot of football to be played, I feel as though everyone has a positive feeling."

Barca have now claimed 13 consecutive league victories stretching back to last season and Valverde insists their fine form belongs as much to their work ethic as the performances of individual stars. "The spirit in this team is excellent," the former Athletic Bilbao boss said at his post-match press conference.

"We are trying to be together in both attack and defence. What I most like about this team is that they are programmed to work hard."

Dybala making Serie A history with incredible scoring start

Paulo Dybala might be the most in-form player in world football. The Juventus star has smashed in 10 goals in the opening six games of the Serie A season, firing the Bianconeri to a perfect start to the campaign.

He is the first player to hit the target that many times in the first six matches of an Italian top-flight season since 1994-95 - as far back as Opta's records go.

Only Falcao, who has netted 11 times in seven games for Monaco, has bettered Dybala's tally in Europe's top-five leagues.

Lionel Messi (nine goals) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (eight) are the other frontmen starting the 2017-18 season in style.Incredibly, though, Juventus' flawless start through six games has not been enough for them to claim top spot in Serie A.

That is because Napoli also boast an 100 per cent record, making this the first Serie A season ever in which two clubs have won their opening six games.
Juve's most recent win came against local rivals Torino, with Dybala scoring twice in a 4-0 victory.Napoli, meanwhile, were 3-2 winners at SPAL thanks to Faouzi Ghoulam's 83rd-minute winner.Dries Mertens, who fired in a career-best 28 league goals last season, has picked up where he left off by notching six in six games so far this term.

Decision on Pogba surgery next week, reveals surgeon

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba will find out if he will go under the knife to cure his hamstring troubles next week, Finnish surgeon Sakari Orava has revealed.

Oraval, who also worked on Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele, will hold talks with the France international over whether an operation would be best for him to get back on his feet.

The 24-year-old suffered an injury in the early stages of Manchester United’s Champions League win over Basel earlier this month, but may not necessarily need a procedure.“His injury is a little different to Dembele because he can heal without surgery,” he told HS. “A decision will be taken next week.”

Orava explained why the injury probably came about. “This kind of problem is usually a sum of many coincidences and is affected by muscle fatigue as well as rapid stopping and quick turning, with the brain going quicker than the feet,” he said.

The 72-year-old surgeon reckons he has conducted nearly 1000 operations on hamstrings and perhaps double that on Achilles injuries. Among his patients have been David Beckham and Dembele, who went under the knife for the first time under the Finn’s hand earlier this week.

The Barcelona star’s rehabilitation has been programmed at around three-and-a-half months following surgery, and Manchester United will hope Pogba won't be out nearly as long as his France team-mate.

The boys were not sharp – Mourinho concedes United had to go defensive at Southampton

Jose Mourinho felt Manchester United were forced to adopt defensive tactics in their win at Southampton as some of the players were lacking sharpness.

Romelu Lukaku's eighth goal in as many games secured a hard-fought victory at St Mary's Stadium that keeps United level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Chances were scarce at both ends, but the visitors spent the whole of the second half on the back foot, seemingly content to allow Southampton the ball and maintain a strong defensive shape.

Mourinho, who was sent to the stands in the dying minutes by referee Craig Pawson after he was summoned by the fourth official, says the result was all that mattered.

"It is not always possible to operate at high quality, but we fought hard," the United manager told Sky Sports. "We did what many teams in the Premier League do for 90 minutes, which was play with five defenders at the back.

"Credit to Southampton: they tried to play. [Mauricio] Pellegrino changed the team and sent on another striker to play more direct. It was a hard game, but I am really happy.

"I felt some of the boys were not sharp. I didn't feel like we could score three or four goals like we sometimes do so the option was to make sure we got the points."He added to MUTV: "Three fantastic points – the same points as when we win 4-0.

"Our team had chances to kill the game. We had two enormous chances with [Ander] Herrera and Lukaku. Then we put ourselves in a position where he had to defend to keep the result, which we did extremely well, with a good keeper and with good defenders, so I am really happy."

Southampton striker Shane Long felt his side were worthy of a point, despite them managing only four reasonably tame efforts on target throughout the 90 minutes.
"I thought we deserved more from the game," he told Sky Sports."Manchester United are dangerous all over the pitch. They have physical players on set-pieces. To limit them to one goal was a credit to our team, but it was just a shame we couldn't get that equaliser at the other end."There were a lot of chances, but things didn't seem to fall for us. It wasn't through a lack of trying though. It just didn't happen."
