Verona 1 Juventus 3: Brilliant Dybala at the double on Juve return

Paulo Dybala announced his return to the Juventus starting line-up with a match-winning brace as the Serie A champions triumphed 3-1 at Verona.

Dybala was handed a start by head coach Massimiliano Allegri for the first time in four Serie A matches – his impressive early season form having collapsed amid calls from Juve vice-president Pavel Nedved for the 24-year-old to "make sacrifices in his private life".

The former Palermo favourite's impact was peripheral to begin with, as Blaise Matuidi netted a sixth-minute opener and Gonzalo Higuain regularly threatened more punishment for second-bottom Verona.

But ex-Juve defender Martin Caceres elevated an all-action showing by firing home a long-range equaliser before the hour and Allegri's men were facing reaching the halfway point of the season with a three-point deficit to league leaders Napoli.

However, the gap was cut back down to one thanks to a rejuvenated Dybala, who scored in the 72nd and 77th minutes and can certainly have a key influence upon the destination of the title in this form.

Medhi Benatia headed over from Dybala's second-minute corner and the Argentina forward's countryman Higuain played a pivotal role in the visitors' opener when his rasping drive cannoned back off the post and Matuidi clinically dispatched the rebound.

Higuain was catching the ball sweetly and forced Verona goalkeeper Nicolas to save down to his right with a low drive from outside the box before a brilliant free-kick in the 19th minute curled agonisingly wide.

Italy Under-21 international Daniele Verde almost found a spectacular equaliser as the half hour approached by cutting inside Juventus right-back Stephan Lichtsteiner and unleashing a strike that swerved beyond Wojciech Szczesny's far post.

Nicolas excelled himself five minutes before the break by denying Higuain from point-blank range on the end of Alex Sandro's cross, ensuring the deficit remained a slender one at half-time.

While a booked Caceras remonstrated in animated fashion with referee Paolo Silvio Mazzoleni as the teams left the field – far removed from his later joy – there were concerns over a limping Higuain. But he was not substituted at the interval, when midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur made way for winger Federico Bernardeschi to give the Juve line-up an even more attacking look.

Bernardeschi drew a sharp 58th-minute save from Nicolas, but Allegri was left to question his ambition shortly afterwards when Sami Khedira was caught out in a seemingly under-manned midfield and Caceres rifled home from range to his obvious delight.

On-loan Juventus youngster Moise Kean had his parent club's defence scrambling, but captain Giorgio Chiellini was on hand to avert the danger.

As the champions faced the prospect of dropping points on a night when victory should have been sewn up, Dybala thrillingly took centre stage.Lichtsteiner bravely created his first – flinging himself towards a loose ball on the right and crashing into Caceres as he turned it into the box for Dybala to finish.

The experienced Swiss defender made way with his injuries, but Dybala ensured his efforts were not in vain as he sashayed through a tiring Verona defence and dispatched a marvellous solo effort.

The superlative Argentine thought he had a hat-trick when Nicholas beat away his 80th-minute free-kick, by which point there was no doubt over the identity of the game's decisive star.

Benzema ruled out for Real Madrid with hamstring injury

Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema could be out of action for up to three weeks after suffering a hamstring strain. The Frenchman did not feature in Madrid's training session on Saturday and underwent a medical examination instead, having made an early exit in a 3-0 loss to Barcelona on December 23.

Madrid's tests subsequently confirmed a hamstring problem, and while the club have not released a timetable for his return, reports suggest he is expected to be out for two to three weeks — a period that would potentially feature five games across the Copa del Rey and La Liga.

Benzema has scored five goals in 18 matches in all competitions for Madrid this season. The Clasico defeat has left Los Blancos fourth in La Liga entering the new year, 14 points back of first-placed Barca.

West Brom 1 Arsenal 1: Controversial spot-kick denies Gunners on record day for Wenger

    47A9BC0900000578-5224965-image-a-68_1514744657977.jpg

Arsene Wenger's record-breaking 811th Premier League match in charge of Arsenal ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw with West Brom. The Gunners produced a fairly listless performance at The Hawthorns in the absence of the injured Mesut Ozil, but Alexis Sanchez's deflected free-kick seven minutes from time looked to be enough for them to snatch all three points.

However, a controversial late penalty allowed Jay Rodriguez to score the equaliser and lift West Brom off the bottom of the table on goal difference, while Arsenal move into fifth above arch-rivals Tottenham, but are three points off the Champions League spots.

Ozil was left out of the squad due to a knee injury that could also see him miss Wednesday's clash with Chelsea, and Wenger was given a further headache when Sead Kolasinac limped off during a tepid first half.

Sanchez, who continues to be linked with a move to Manchester City, started alongside Alexandre Lacazette and Alex Iwobi in attack, but clear-cut opportunities were scarce against Alan Pardew's disciplined side.

The visitors' pressure increased in the closing stages and Sanchez struck the vital blow when his free-kick glanced in off James McClean, but Rodriguez levelled in the 89th minute to leave Wenger furious.

Arsenal were dealt a blow before kick-off, with Ozil missing from the squad due to a knee injury, and goalkeeper Petr Cech then picked up a knock after dropping a cross under pressure in the early exchanges.

Cech was unsettled for some minutes but he did manage to claw away a header from Rodriguez, while Arsenal's best early chance saw Iwobi curl a shot over the crossbar from the edge of the box.

Iwobi was then denied by Ben Foster after creating some space 20 yards out, but the Gunners' drab half got worse nine minutes before the break when Kolasinac limped off after a foul by Gareth Barry.

West Brom's pressure began to increase after half-time, but Foster had to be alert to block Lacazette's low strike after the France international made a rare drive into the penalty area.

Arsenal suddenly looked a little livelier in attack and Lacazette prodded a promising chance just wide of the left-hand post, before Sanchez rippled the side-netting with a dipping effort from the right.

Wenger introduced Per Mertesacker for Koscielny, who appeared to be moving a little gingerly, before throwing on Danny Welbeck in a bid to break down a West Brom defence that was beginning to drop deeper and deeper as the clock ticked down.Sanchez thought he had won the match for Arsenal with seven minutes left, his free-kick glancing off McClean in the wall and nestling into the bottom corner in front of the visiting fans.

However, with a minute of normal time remaining, referee Mike Dean penalised Calum Chambers when Kieran Gibbs' cross struck his hands from close range, allowing Rodriguez the chance to fire the ball down the middle of Cech's goal and rescue a point.

Crystal Palace 0 Manchester City 0: Milivojevic misses late penalty as City's winning run ends

    47A9021300000578-0-image-a-41_1514727930823.jpg

Luka Milivojevic had a stoppage-time penalty saved as Crystal Palace missed the chance to halt Manchester City's unbeaten start to the season, although the Premier League leaders' winning run has been stopped at 18 matches following the goalless draw at Selhurst Park.

Pep Guardiola's men went into the match one win away from equalling the record for successive wins in Europe's top five leagues - set by the Catalan's Bayern Munich side - but they were ultimately frustrated by a well-drilled Palace side who were only denied all three points by Ederson's heroics at the end.

City showed two sides to their game in the first half, as they created a few good chances with some expansive football - Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero going particularly close, with the latter introduced midway through the half for the injured Gabriel Jesus.

But there was also palpable frustration on show, with Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane, who was booked for petulantly kicking the ball away at the end of a poor first half, involved in a verbal disagreement at one point.

City appeared more switched on again after Raheem Sterling's introduction from the bench in the 57th minute, adding a little extra spark to their attacks and setting Sane up for a great chance.

But it was Palace who came closest to clinching the win following a Sterling foul on Wilfried Zaha, but Ederson was equal to Milivojevic's effort from the spot, leaving City 14 points clear of Chelsea.City were quick out of the blocks at Selhurst Park and almost took the lead after just two minutes, as De Bruyne found Silva at the back post and the playmaker sliced an effort just wide of the bottom-left corner.

The visitors nearly gifted Palace an opener shortly after, though, when Ederson dropped the ball on the edge of the area and needed Eliaquim Mangala to make a vital block to deny Christian Benteke a first home Premier League goal since May.
City then suffered the blow of losing a tearful Jesus to injury in the 23rd minute after overstretching.

But his replacement, Sergio Aguero, went close shortly after coming on, seeing a shot deflect off a defender and strike the post.Hints of frustration started to show in the City team the longer the first half remained goalless, with Sane and De Bruyne arguing just before the break after the two were on different wave lengths in the final third.Chances remained at a premium after the break, with Ilkay Gundogan's curling effort that went just wide in the 56th minute - a few moments before his withdrawal for Sterling - the only opportunity in the quarter-of-an-hour that followed half-time.

Sterling did make a difference, though, and almost set up Sane for the opener just after the hour when he played a cross to the back post and Wayne Hennessey denied the German from point-blank range.

A similarly brilliant opportunity fell to Andros Townsend 12 minutes from time, but the winger sliced over from 10 yards when assisted by the lively Zaha.

Palace should have then finished City off right at the end when Zaha was sent tumbling by Sterling inside the penalty area, but Ederson saved Milivojevic's spot-kick with ease to preserve the visitors' unbeaten run and spare their blushes.

'We fought together, we won together' – Conte stresses positive Diego Costa memories

Chelsea coach Antonio Conte will always remember Diego Costa in a "positive way", despite their fractious relationship culminating in the Spain striker re-joining Atletico Madrid.Costa was presented as an Atletico player on Sunday after being frozen out at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old played a key role as Chelsea won the Premier League title in Conte's first season at the club but was subsequently told he was surplus to requirements by the Italian.

After training alone in his native Brazil, Costa finally got his wish of a return to Atletico and will now be tasked with ensuring Diego Simeone's men secure a top-four finish in La Liga.

Despite their relationship ending in acrimony, Conte has refused to criticise the fiery centre-forward, instead praising him for the way they "fought together".

"It's not right to talk about players who are not in my team and squad," Conte told Sky Sports. "But I thank him for his commitment and behaviour during the season."We won together, so I will always remember him in a positive way. We fought together and won together."

Without the services of Costa, Chelsea look set to lose their Premier League crown to Manchester City and Conte says they already need to start thinking about being ready to fight them next season.

"We have to try to fight them," Conte added. "We have to find the right way to fight them."If it's not possible this season, we must be ready to fight them next season. This must be our target."

Klopp delighted with 'perfect' Liverpool after Leicester victory

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool's response to conceding an early Leicester City goal as "the best I've ever seen" following Saturday's Mohamed Salah-inspired 2-1 win at Anfield.

Jamie Vardy continued his familiar habit of scored against Liverpool by dispatching Riyad Mahrez's third-minute cutback – the England striker's seventh in his past five outings against Klopp's men.

Leicester held firm under relentless pressure before the interval and Liverpool's reward arrived during the second period, courtesy of two expertly taken strikes from Salah that take the Egypt winger on to 23 goals for the campaign in all competitions.

"It is a maximum satisfaction to win like this and on perfect days we win football games. Today was pretty much perfect," Klopp told BBC Sport. "When we were one goal down our reaction was the best I've ever seen in this situation."The crowd were unbelievable and we needed them to score these two goals."Mo was fantastic with his dribbling and his vision. I couldn't ask more from him."

Klopp added: "Staying in the game is the real deal of football in this league but I am happy for Mo, I am happy for the team because this group is a fantastic group of players. "It's a good team performance and a well-deserved win."

Liverpool lie fourth in the Premier League after extending their top-flight unbeaten run to 12 matches and travel to Burnley on New Year's Day, while Leicester host Huddersfield Town.

"Of course, after a defeat it is a disappointment but Liverpool played their best," said Leicester manager Claude Puel. "We did well to score first and we tried to keep that in the second half. We need to continue our work but it is important to concentrate on the game on Monday and forget this game to move forward."

Man Utd legend Giggs slams 'ridiculous' critics of managerial aspirations

Ryan Giggs has lashed out at those who criticise his managerial ambitions, insisting it is "ridiculous" to claim he does not have enough experience to manage in the top flight.

Giggs, who managed Manchester United for four games after David Moyes' sacking in 2014, has been linked with a clutch of jobs in recent months, including Swansea City and Wales.

However, he has yet to move into the dugout full-time as a number one - he did spend two years under Louis van Gaal as assistant manager at United - and told The Times last week that he would feel comfortable managing a top-flight club, given the experience he gained during his playing career."I don't have experience in the lower divisions. It's not where I've worked in my career," he said.

"I've spent my whole life in the Premier League - not just as a player but as a player-coach and assistant manager. I know now I wasn't ready when I had those four games in charge at United but I'm a lot better qualified to manage now after those two years with Louis. That was a fantastic experience."

Critics have since claimed that he should focus on working his way up the ladder instead of merely expecting to be handed the keys to an elite club, but Giggs has now issued a vigorous defence of his own CV.

"I did an interview last week about my managerial aspirations and received some criticism because apparently I wasn't willing to manage at a lower level," he told Sky Sports."I didn't say anything at all about not managing at a lower level; I said because of my experience, I'd be more suited coaching at the level which I previously played and coached.

"My critic quoted Steven Gerrard saying, in his experience, footballers want to just do their UEFA C Licence and go straight into the job. I did my UEFA B Licence when I was 29, my A Licence when I was 35, my Pro Licence while I was still playing and I coached at Manchester United for three years - including managing four games - so I don't see the relevance.

"The argument that players who have been a success can't go into success is a non-argument. People use Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger but there are also countless examples of unsuccessful players being unsuccessful managers. It is all down to the individual.

"I played until I was 40 so I was doing my Pro Licence on a Saturday and Sunday, training on a Monday and Tuesday, doing more coaching and then driving back for Champions League games on Wednesday. To say I haven't put in the work is ridiculous."

Giggs, who has also previously proclaimed his interest in managing Leicester City and Everton, is currently co-owner of Salford City.

:(:sorry:Man United's Young gets three-game ban for elbowing Tadic

Manchester United's Ashley Young has been given a three-match ban by the Football Association (FA) after he accepted a charge of violent conduct.

Young appeared to elbow the Southampton's Dusan Tadic in the stomach as they jostled at a corner during the second half of the 0-0 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday. The 32-year-old accepted the charge, but his argument that the length of the suspension was excessive was rejected by an FA regulatory commission.

"Ashley Young will be suspended for Manchester United's next three matches," the FA confirmed in a statement. "He accepted a violent conduct charge following an off-the-ball incident during yesterday's game against Southampton, but argued the suspension was excessive. This was rejected by a Regulatory Commission."

The FA has also issued a three-game ban to Swansea City's Kyle Naughton after he was seen apparently stamping on Watford striker Stefano Okaka in their 2-1 win at Vicarage Road.

The news on Young is another blow for United manager Jose Mourinho, who is already without full-back Antonio Valencia, club captain Michael Carrick, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Marouane Fellaini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku due to injury.

United face Everton on Monday before they host Derby County in the FA Cup next Friday. They then meet Stoke City on January 15.

Wenger sets Premier League record for most games managed

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has set a Premier League record by taking charge of his 811th career Premier League game.

The Gunners boss broke the mark set by Sir Alex Ferguson when he led the Gunners in Sunday's match at West Bromwich Albion. Wenger began his two-decade run in north London in 1996, and has led Arsenal to three Premier League titles along with seven FA Cups.

In his 810 league matches at the helm, Wenger has compiled a record of 468 wins, 197 draws and 145 losses.

Though Wenger has bested Ferguson's Premier League mark, the Scottish manager has still taken charge of far more top-flight matches in England. Ferguson managed 223 First Division matches from 1986 to the advent of the Premier League in 1992, giving him a total of 1,033 in the English top flight.

:yes:Wenger record won't be beaten, says old adversary Ferguson

Alex Ferguson believes Arsene Wenger's record for Premier League games managed will never be beaten.

Arsenal boss Wenger clocked up 811 Premier League fixtures in the dugout during Sunday's controversial 1-1 draw with West Brom, surpassing the benchmark previously set by his old foe Ferguson at Manchester United.

Wenger is widely seen as the last of a dying breed, having managed the Gunners for more than 20 years, into an era that has seen sackings become much more commonplace. And the Old Trafford icon believes Wenger's tally, wherever it ends, will stand the test of time.

"I applaud Arsene on surpassing my record of managing 810 Premier League games," Ferguson said via the League Managers' Association."It is a fantastic milestone which has required the highest standards of dedication and professional management to achieve. I doubt his record, whatever it turns out to be, will ever be beaten."Congratulations on a truly remarkable career and great service to football and Arsenal FC."

:love:Paul Pogba tells Manchester United to 'wake up' amid form slump

Paul Pogba says "something has to change" at Manchester United following their third draw in a row in the Premier League.Jose Mourinho's side were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Southampton on Saturday, a result that allowed Chelsea to move ahead of them into second place in the table.

United have now drawn three league games in a row since losing to Bristol City in the quarter-final of the EFL Cup, in what has proved to be a damaging December for the Red Devils.

Pogba has urged his team-mates to "wake up" and go to Everton on Monday determined to get back to winning ways.

"Of course we wanted to win," he told MUTV. "We drew again. We didn't lose but we have to wake up, bounce back and get back to winning. The three draws we have to win, something has to change and we have to change to win."We have to rest. It's only one day and then we have to play against Everton – that's football. We have to go out there and win."

United's disappointing day was compounded by the loss of Romelu Lukaku to a head injury, with Mourinho expecting to be without the striker for at least the next two matches.Pogba admits the loss of the Belgium international is a big blow, but says United have the strength in depth to cope.

"When we have Romelu, he makes it difficult for defenders and creates so much space as well," he said. "He's a big miss for us but we have the team to fill the gap of Romelu."
