Argentina 0 Croatia 3: Caballero drops clanger as Messi's men are stunned

    4D7FEB4300000578-5871401-image-a-83_1529610227310.jpg

Willy Caballero's clanger presented Ante Rebic with an opportunity he could not refuse, and Croatia rolled on to a stunning 3-0 victory over Argentina that sent them into the last 16 of the World Cup.

Jorge Sampaoli's side produced an abysmal second-half display that severely damages their hopes of following Croatia out of Group D, with Caballero's stray pass to Gabriel Mercado that was volleyed home by Rebic in the 53rd minute proving the turning point.

Any hopes of a late Argentina fightback were extinguished 10 minutes from time as the irrepressible Luka Modric whipped a fine strike into the bottom-right corner from just outside the penalty area.Argentina had all but given up by the closing stages and they were punished further in stoppage time when Ivan Rakitic tapped in from close range with barely a defender in sight.

All eyes were on Lionel Messi before the game after his saved penalty in the South Americans' opening 1-1 draw with Iceland and, once again, he was a shadow of the player that has starred for Barcelona.

Messi cut an isolated figure throughout and was unable to rouse his side in the closing stages, leaving them in danger of needing a win and a swing in goal difference to reach the knockout stages.

Argentina brought in Marcos Acuna, Enzo Perez and Mercado after the draw with Iceland and started sluggishly, almost falling behind after just five minutes.

Ivan Perisic surged into space down the left and cracked a shot towards the bottom-right corner, which was superbly tipped around the post by Caballero – only starting in Russia due to a knee injury for regular number one Sergio Romero.
Sampaoli's men were far from fluid in attack in the early stages, but did twice come close to breaking the deadlock.

A superb Dejan Lovren block prevented Maximiliano Meza's low strike finding the net and then Acuna's whipped cross clipped the top of Danijel Subasic's crossbar.
Perez squandered a golden opportunity to score at the half-hour mark, conspiring to strike wide of an almost open goal from 15 yards after some haphazard Croatia defending.

Mario Mandkuzic somehow failed to find the back of the net just three minutes later, stealing in unmarked at the back post and flashing a header wide of Caballero's right-hand post from six yards. There was still time for one more act of profligacy before the interval when Rebic made a mess of Modric's wonderful pass behind the Argentina backline, thumping well over.

There was no such wastefulness from Rebic eight minutes into the second period, as he unerringly rifled a volley past Caballero after the goalkeeper's chip lacked the power to evade him.Argentina almost bounced back soon after, but Subasic kept out Meza's close-range effort from substitute Gonzalo Higuain's cutback and they were unable to bundle the rebound home.

A leveller scarcely looked likely after that and their miserable night was compounded when Modric curled in superbly from 20 yards.Rakitic was fouled by Javier Mascherano – Nicolas Otamendi receiving a booking for appearing to kick the ball towards the consequently prone Barca midfielder's head as tempers flared – and crashed the resulting free-kick against the crossbar.

There was no denying Rakitic in the 91st minute, though, as he slotted home from the centre of the box after Mateo Kovacic's initial shot was saved by Caballero, making a premature exit a distinct possibility for the two-time champions.

Perisic: Argentina don't play as a team and 'need to change something'

Ivan Perisic lauded the qualities of Lionel Messi, but said Argentina can only achieve something if they learn to play as a unit following Croatia's 3-0 victory at the World Cup.

Perisic put in an impressive display in Nizhny Novgorod on Thursday, as Willy Caballero's error – which gifted Ante Rebic the opener – and goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic secured Croatia a place in the World Cup knockout stages for the first time since France 1998.Argentina, on the other hand, are at risk of an early exit, with Iceland knowing a victory against Nigeria on Friday would put them in pole position to progress alongside Croatia.

Messi was well marshalled by Croatia throughout, and Inter winger Perisic says that Argentina must learn to work together if the 30-year-old is to reach the levels that Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo manages in major tournaments.

"Messi is the best, just like Cristiano Ronaldo, but you can only achieve something if you play as a team," Perisic told Mediaset."Argentina need to change something if they are to go forward. "As for us, we're on the right track to emulate what we did in France '98 and must continue like this.

"We did really well. In the locker room, we said that we had to defend stoutly and we did that."We had chances in the first half too, then the goals arrived after the break. We have six points, we deserved them and now we want to beat Iceland too."

A point against Iceland would be enough to secure top spot for Croatia in Group D, and ensure that a tie with likely Group C winners France is avoided in the next round.

Argentina squad 'clouds' Messi's brilliance, claims Sampaoli

Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli suggested his squad limit the impact of Lionel Messi at the World Cup, while Portugal manage to get the best out of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi, who missed a penalty in Argentina's draw against Iceland in their opening Group D match, was frustrated for much of Thursday's clash with Croatia, as a 3-0 defeat put Sampaoli's side on the brink of an early exit.Sampaoli has an array of attacking talent at his disposal, but has struggled to make it click, with Messi often tasked with directing all of Argentina's play.

While Messi is yet to get off the mark in Russia, rival Ronaldo has netted four times in two games, with his blistering header securing victory for Portugal against Morocco on Wednesday.

But the former Sevilla boss insists Messi should not be compared to Ronaldo, given the differences between Argentina and the current European champions."Ronaldo is an excellent player, you can look at all he has achieved in his career," Sampaoli said."Right now, we shouldn't compare these two players. With the reality of the Argentina squad, it sort of clouds Leo's brilliance.

"He's limited because the team doesn't gel with him ideally, as it should. As coaches, we need to deal with this."I've always looked for the best position for my players on the pitch. The playmaker carries a special burden. We didn't manage to find link-ups that would benefit Argentina and Leo."

Sampaoli has plenty of talent to choose from, but has struggled to fit the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Sergio Aguero and Messi into the same side, while Juventus star Paulo Dybala has been ineffective from the bench.Argentina must beat Nigeria in their final group game to stand a chance of progressing, and are relying on Iceland slipping up, but Sampaoli still has faith that his squad's quality can shine through.

"I thought we would put a lot of pressure on Croatia, in their half of the pitch, but after they scored we kind of lost our way," he added."We were emotionally broken and we didn't have any footballing way to change the course of events. If you don't have momentum, it's very difficult to move forward.

"I value my players a great deal, I think this is an excellent squad, but at no stage did we really gel and come together. We need to take advantage of this last match, fight for it, and hopefully go through."

Blame me, not Caballero - Sampaoli defends goalkeeper after blunder

Argentina head coach Jorge Sampaoli insists he should take the blame for their dramatic 3-0 World Cup defeat to Croatia and not goalkeeper Willy Caballero.

The 36-year-old - only starting in Russia after Sergio Romero withdrew from the squad due to a knee injury - gifted Ante Rebic a 53rd-minute goal after a woeful attempted pass lacked the power to evade the forward. That set in motion a painful second half for Argentina, who conceded further goals from Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic to leave them in danger of needing a win and a swing in goal difference in their final Group D game against Nigeria to reach the last 16.

Sampaoli was quick to shield Caballero from inevitable criticism, suggesting it was his own preparation for the game that was to blame.

"I was very hopeful and I have a lot of pain because of the defeat, I probably did not read the game properly," he said."You are right, I am the one to make the final decision on these things. "The key to the defeat relates to my responsibility because I'm the coach. I had to devise a plan, had I set up differently things might have worked out better. I don't think it's realistic to put the burden on Caballero."

Argentina will have a clearer idea of what they need to do in their final game after Friday's other Group D clash between Iceland and Nigeria.Despite the shattering loss to Croatia, Sampaoli is adamant his side have not given up their pursuit of a spot in the knockout rounds.

"We were very excited before this game, to be able to get the first place and be close to the qualification," he added. "This moves us away and makes it very painful for everyone."Now we have to fight to achieve a place in the next phase."

    11.gif

Iceland Nigeria paraddala Croatia walata paradunath dan Argentina walata echchara sure ekak nehe moko goal difference eka hinda. Even 2-0 would've been ok but 3-0 is an absolute fuck up

So Argentina would want for Iceland to lose or draw vs Nigeria & Iceland to lose or draw vs Croatia while beating Nigeria Themselves

But Iceland will likely beat Nigeria the way they are playing
    :sorry:

Brazil 2 Costa Rica 0: Coutinho and Neymar score in stoppage time to snatch win

    4D85FC7600000578-5874461-image-a-103_1529675900832.jpg

Philippe Coutinho and Neymar both scored in stoppage time to snatch victory for Brazil after the Paris Saint-Germain forward had been denied a penalty by VAR in a 2-0 World Cup win over Costa Rica.

Desperate for a win in St Petersburg after being held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in their opening fixture, Brazil looked like missing out on the three points when the decision to award Neymar a spot-kick was overturned in the 79th minute.

The former Barcelona star went down softly under the challenge of Giancarlo Gonzalez, with referee Bjorn Kuipers initially pointing to the spot.

However, VAR intervention led to a reversal of the decision, as replays showed minimal contact between Gonzalez and Neymar, who had fallen backwards as if pulled down. The incident came late in a match Brazil dominated but in which for long spells they struggled to break down a determined Costa Rica defence.

However, with the clock having ticked past 90 minutes, Coutinho and Neymar stepped forward to break Costa Rican hearts and spare Brazilian blushes, sending their side top of Group E ahead of the clash between Serbia and Switzerland.Neymar dropped to his knees in tears on the final whistle after the tournament's most successful side came through a real test of character against a Costa Rica side whose hopes of progression are now over.

Costa Rica – rightly anticipating that Brazil would enjoy the lion's share of possession – sat deep but looked dangerous when they were given the rare opportunity to counter.

Celso Borges should have done better when he dragged an effort wide of the target from a Cristian Gamboa cutback after 13 minutes and, for all of their time on the ball, Brazil found it difficult to find a way through the Costa Rica defence.

Gabriel Jesus hammered a shot into the back of the net from an offside position in the 25th minute, rightly prompting a flag from the linesman, but the incident sparked a period of Brazil pressure, with Marcelo and Coutinho trying their luck from distance and a Neymar cross necessitating a desperate defensive header over the crossbar.

Marcelo had looked most likely to make something happen for Brazil but found Keylor Navas equal to his low drive five minutes from the break, the Real Madrid goalkeeper stooping to halt the game's first shot on target from his clubmate.

Neymar – named in the starting XI despite struggling with an ankle injury this week - confronted the referee on the pitch and in the tunnel at half-time, presumably taking objection to Costa Rica's rough-and-ready approach to dealing with him.And Brazil returned to the field with added purpose after the break, with Jesus heading against the crossbar before Navas diverted Coutinho's follow-up wide.

Navas – a growing thorn in Brazil's side – pulled off even greater heroics to deny Neymar with a fingertip save soon after, while another Coutinho strike was directed straight at the goalkeeper.Neymar curled around the right-hand post from 18 yards after the defence opened up for him in the 72nd minute, before the officials arrived at the correct decision via VAR to deny him a penalty.

That incident threatened to dominate the headlines until Coutinho prodded Brazil in front in the 91st minute, getting on the end of a Roberto Firmino nod down and a helpful touch from Jesus. And Neymar was on hand to tap home Douglas Costa's delicate chipped cross even deeper into stoppage time to wrap up three points that had appeared like slipping through Brazilian fingers.

The relief was clear as the tears rolled down the face of the world's most expensive player, who surpassed Romario in third on the country's all-time list of goalscorers.

Nigeria 2 Iceland 0: Musa brace boosts Super Eagles & Argentina

    4D87183800000578-5874885-image-a-50_1529684092303.jpg

Ahmed Musa struck both goals as Nigeria boosted their World Cup qualification hopes with a 2-0 defeat of Iceland, a result that is also good news for Argentina.

Lionel Messi's team were pushed to the brink of an early exit after a stunning 3-0 loss to Croatia on Thursday, but victory in their final Group D game against Nigeria could now send them through to the last 16.Musa was left out of Nigeria's loss to Croatia but he justified his recall to the side with the opening goal shortly after the interval at the Volgograd Arena on Friday.

The forward controlled a cross from Victor Moses and thumped an unstoppable drive into the roof of the net, with Musa becoming the Super Eagles' top scorer in the history of the tournament courtesy of his third World Cup goal.Nigeria were poor in the first half - failing to record a single shot - but they were much improved after the break, Musa adding another to his personal tally in the 75th minute as Iceland's rock-like resilience crumbled.

Iceland, who saw Gylfi Sigurdsson miss a late penalty, need to win to stand any chance of making the knockout stages, although even three points may not be enough depending on the outcome of Nigeria's clash with Argentina with all three teams still standing a chance to join Croatia in the last 16.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had tested Francis Uzoho with an early free-kick as Iceland made a bright start.Iceland's star man then fired a sixth-minute chance straight at the teenage goalkeeper, who dealt with a string of corners as both sides struggled for fluency in midfield.

But Iceland almost took the lead in the last minute of the first half, Alfred Finnbogason unable to get a decisive touch on Gylfi Sigurdsson's dangerous free-kick delivered from the right wing.Nigeria, in contrast, were unable to put any cohesive attacking moves together, meaning they became the first team at Russia 2018 to fail to record an attempt in the first half

They did test Hannes Thor Halldorsson just 14 seconds after the restart, with the goalkeeper easily saving from Oghenekaro Etebo, who had scored an own goal in his team's 2-0 defeat in Kaliningrad at the weekend. However, the Super Eagles opened the scoring with their next attack in the 49th minute.

Moses led a rapid break down the right with his cross brilliantly collected by Musa, whose superb first touch took defender Ragnar Sigurdsson out of the equation. If Musa's first touch was good his second was even better, a lashed finish on the half-volley giving Halldorsson no chance.

Nigeria's confidence levels grew in the wake of the goal, Halldorsson having to be alert to tip over a deflected rifled drive from Wilfred Ndidi.Musa rattled the crossbar as Nigeria pushed to seal all three points - and the striker would not be denied again in the 75th minute.

Fed by Kenneth Omeruo, Musa burst clear in the left channel, cut inside and slipped a calm finish past Halldorsson.Nigeria survived a late scare after a VAR review spotted substitute Tyronne Ebuehi had tripped Finnbogason, with Gylfi Sigurdsson's spot-kick effort clearing the crossbar.

But a late injury to captain John Obi Mikel, who appeared to hurt his hand during six minutes of additional time, could be a concern for Gernot Rohr's side ahead of an all-or-nothing clash with Argentina.
