'Few teams have the balls to play like that' - Kroos delighted as Germany answer critics

Toni Kroos said Germany have been rightly criticised during their World Cup campaign, but praised his side's determination after they fought back from a goal behind to beat Sweden 2-1 in Sochi.

After Marco Reus cancelled out Ola Toivonen's opener, Kroos scored the winning goal in second-half stoppage time, whipping a scintillating free-kick into the top corner from an acute angle.

The result ensured Germany go into their final Group F match against South Korea knowing a win will put them into the tournament's knockout phase – a fate that seemed unlikely at times against Sweden.

Although he recovered in spectacular fashion late on, Kroos was guilty of giving the ball away lightly in the build-up to Toivonen's well-taken goal and the Real Madrid star held his hand up to the error."All in all we did not capitalise on the stages in the game in which we were really good," Kroos told ARD.

"If you play 400 passes in the game, two will not come good. If one of them leads to a goal, that's stupid."But then you have to have the balls to play the second half like that, but only a few can do that."Germany's performance was an improvement on their World Cup opener, which they lost 1-0 to Mexico.

Against Sweden, Joachim Low's men attacked fluently throughout and cut out their occasional defensive lapses in the second half to see out the win."We have been much criticised, rightly at times," said Kroos."One had the feeling that a relatively large number of people in Germany would have been happy if we had gone out, but it's not that easy."

Reus: Many Germans wanted us out of the World Cup

Marco Reus said Germany had proven many of their own fans wrong by bouncing back from potential World Cup elimination to put their campaign on course with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Sweden .

Die Mannschaft were heavily criticised in their own country after slipping to a 1-0 defeat against Mexico in their Group F opener, which made victory against Sweden vital if Joachim Low's men were to remain in control of their own destiny.

They achieved that victory in dramatic style, recovering from Ola Toivonen's first-half strike for Sweden and turning the game on its head through goals from Reus and Toni Kroos – the latter a 95th-minute free-kick that sent Germany's fans and players into jubilant celebrations.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Reus was asked whether he felt that some Germans were willing their team to lose in order to prompt a shake-up in the ranks, and he said: "I think it is indeed something that we have an impression of."Many people in Germany were looking forward to us bowing out of the tournament. But I think we have shown a team spirit, despite Sweden going ahead.

"Of course that was a setback and we had to digest that first, but we came back immediately and could have scored one or two more, but it was that final finish, that final determination was missing.

"Right now, that's firmly in the past. We set out to win and achieved it."
Reus heaped praise on Real Madrid midfielder Kroos, who he teed up for the sensational winning goal in the dying seconds.

Asked about his feelings after seeing the ball hit the net, Reus said: "Of course, pure elation. We've seen a couple of times at this World Cup in the last five minutes and particularly in stoppage time quite a number of goals.

"The fact that in the last 10 minutes we were trying to keep up pressure, we were really eager to win this match and the fact that Toni Kroos put it away like that is just incredible.

"He's shown that talent on previous occasions but it shows in this case it was practically the last opportunity to win the match so I pay my respect to him for doing what he did."A win over South Korea will now likely see Germany through to the last 16 though all four sides in Group F are still in with a chance.

It may be my last World Cup - 'Realistic' Pogba determined to reign in Russia

Paul Pogba wants to help France win the 2018 World Cup as he is "realistic" over the possibility of never playing in the tournament again. The Manchester United midfielder has helped Les Bleus record wins over Australia and Peru in Russia, sending them through to the last 16 with a game to spare in Group C.

However, Didier Deschamps' side have yet to dazzle ahead of their clash with second-place Denmark on Tuesday, with Pogba's performances once again coming under intense media scrutiny.

However, having missed out on glory on home soil at Euro 2016, where France lost to Portugal in the final, the 25-year-old is less interested in what his critics have to say and is instead focused only on making sure France lift the trophy on July 15.

"Maybe it's my last World Cup, we do not know," he told reporters."I'm really enjoying myself, I'm going to forget the critics, do my talking on the pitch as it's the only answer.

"I give my best for my jersey, my team, for France. I really want to win this World Cup."Asked why it could be his last tournament, considering his age, Pogba replied: "I'm realistic about the fact that it may be my last World Cup.

"We do not know what's going to happen tomorrow, maybe I'll be injured or there will be players who will outperform me."But I hope to do more than one. Some players do not even play one World Cup in their careers."

Modric and Rakitic the best midfield in Russia - Corluka

Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic are the best central midfield pairing at the 2018 World Cup according to experienced Croatia defender Vedran Corluka.

Real Madrid playmaker Modric and his Barcelona counterpart Rakitic have resumed their alliance for the national team to fine effect in Russia, with both scoring second-half goals as Argentina were thumped 3-0 on Thursday.

On the back of a 2-0 win over Nigeria that the duo controlled effortlessly, it meant Croatia's progress to the knockouts stages for their first time since their famous run to the 1998 semi-finals was secured with a game to spare.

"They are playing in the biggest clubs and I think these are their best performances for Croatia during a major tournament," said Corluka, who will win his 100th cap against Iceland in Rostov this Tuesday as head coach Zlatko Dalic shuffles his pack."Maybe I am a bit biased because I am Croatian but, yes, I think they are the best midfield pairing at this tournament. I hope they will continue the same way and lead us as far as possible."

Winger Ivan Perisic also lauded Croatia's wealth of midfield talent, which was anchored by his Inter team-mate Marcelo Brozovic against the bereft Argentinians, while Real Madrid's Mateo Kovacic was only introduced as a late substitute."Everyone knows our midfield players have big roles in the big Europe's biggest clubs," Perisic said.

"They are obviously world class. They are playing well at this tournament and we all need to continue doing the same thing from now on."Croatia made similarly impressive progress from their group at Euro 2016 before coming unstuck against eventual winners Portugal – Ricardo Quaresma scoring the only goal of a dour last-16 encounter in extra time.

Perisic hopes things will be different this time around for a talent-rich generation approaching probably their final collective shot at glory."For most players this is their fourth major tournament in a row," he added. "In France we played really well.

"We were a little bit unlucky against Portugal and I hope our luck will turn around in Russia."

England 6 Panama 1: Kane hat-trick sees Southgate's side sail through

    4D94BA2F00000578-5879591-image-a-88_1529843188121.jpg

Captain Harry Kane led the way with a hat-trick as England stormed into the knockout stages of the World Cup with a 6-1 thrashing of Panama.Gareth Southgate's side had squeezed past Tunisia in their opening Group G game thanks to a stoppage-time winner from their skipper, but there was no late drama in a one-sided clash in Nizhny Novgorod.Kane and John Stones both scored twice in the first half, the former converting a pair of penalties as England netted five before the break against their beleaguered opponents.

However, Jesse Lingard registered the pick of England's first-half strikes, bending a shot home with his right foot after being teed up by Raheem Sterling, who – despite media conjecture in the week – kept his place in the starting XI.

Kane enjoyed a slice of good fortune to secure his treble, inadvertently deflecting Ruben Loftus-Cheek's drive beyond goalkeeper Jaime Penedo, for his fifth of the tournament, moving him clear of Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku in the battle for the Golden Boot.

Substitute Felipe Baloy created history with Panama's first goal in the finals, though England's emphatic win sees them join Belgium - who they face in Kaliningrad on Thursday - in qualifying from the group.

Panama actually enjoyed the first good chance - Anibal Godoy slicing a clear sight of goal wide with his left foot – before they left a canal-sized gap for an unmarked Stones to thump home a header from Kieran Trippier's corner.

The early goal opened the floodgates. Kane emphatically converted a penalty to make it 2-0 following a foul on Lingard, who was next to find the net with a sublime curling finish with his right foot from the edge of the area.A clever set-piece move set up Stones for the next, the centre-back on hand to nod home the rebound after goalkeeper Penedo had impressively kept out Sterling's close-range header.

Kane completed the first-half carnage with a mirror image of his earlier penalty, hammering the ball into Penedo's top right corner after referee Ghead Grisha had spotted a foul on the forward by Fidel Escobar, albeit he was not the only offender as Panama felt holding was their only hope of stemming the English tide.

The Tottenham striker became just the third Englishman to score a treble at the World Cup finals in the 62nd minute, his final touch on Loftus-Cheek's attempt seeing him join a select club that also includes Geoff Hurst and Gary Lineker.Having enjoyed watching his team-mates run up the score, Jordan Pickford made a brave block on Murillo. Yet the Everton goalkeeper was unable to stop veteran Baloy's first-time attempt from Ricardo Avila's free-kick, sparking huge celebrations on the field, in the dugout and also in the stands.

Panama rightly enjoyed their consolation goal, but Kane and England will hog the headlines after a resounding result that will further raise hopes back home of a repeat of their 1966 triumph.

Dortmund in 'final talks' to sign €25m Diallo to replace Arsenal-bound Sokratis

Borussia Dortmund are in "final talks" to sign Abdou Diallo from Mainz, sporting directors from both sides have confirmed. The 22-year-old centre-back moved to Germany from Monaco for a reported €5 million last July, but Mainz are set to bank around €25m (£22m/$29m) as they near a deal with Dortmund.

The Bundesliga giants have fought off interest from Lyon to swoop in for the France Under-21 star, who will replace Arsenal-bound Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc confirmed to German newspaper Ruhrnachrichten that the teams are "in closing talks" and added that new coach Lucien Favre has been heavily involved in the transfer.Meanwhile, Mainz chief Rouven Schroder admitted that his side are not counting on Diallo's return to training as they begin preparations for the new season.

"Diallo will not be there at the start of the training," he said. "We are in good talks with Borussia Dortmund, but the transfer is not perfect yet!" Diallo is just one season into a five-year deal with Mainz and played 27 times and scored twice in the Bundesliga as his side finished 14th.

The left-footed defender made an impression in Germany with his comfort on the ball and ability to build from the back, while Schroder has hailed him as a key player who is strong in the air and in tackles.

Japan 2 Senegal 2: Honda gatecrashes Cisse's party

    4D96AB9E00000578-5879935-image-m-56_1529854730440.jpg

Senegal and Japan missed the chance to take a giant stride towards the World Cup knockout stages after playing out a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Ekaterinburg Arena. After winning their opening games, three points for either side would have made them outright Group H leaders and put them in pole position for a last-16 berth.

As it is, they will have to endure an anxious wait for the result of Poland and Colombia's clash later on Sunday to know what they need to do in the final round of fixtures on Thursday.

Eiji Kawashima was slow to react to Juan Quintero's goal for Colombia in Japan's opening 2-1 win and the goalkeeper was again at fault for Sadio Mane's early opener, punching against the forward's leg when it looked easier to catch. His blushes were spared 11 minutes before the interval, though, when Takashi Inui whipped superbly into the bottom far corner from just inside the penalty area.

Moussa Wague thought he had snatched all three points for Aliou Cisse's side in the 71st minute, but substitute Keisuke Honda ensured a share of the spoils with a close-range finish 12 minutes from time.

Senegal started with a spring in their step and were rewarded with the opening goal after 11 minutes, albeit in fortuitous circumstances.Genki Haraguchi's weak headed clearance fell kindly to Youssouf Sabaly, whose tame shot was inexplicably punched against Mane's shin by Kawashima inside the six-yard box.

The Liverpool forward knew little about it, but watched on in delight as the ball nestled in the corner for his first World Cup goal.Japan had scarcely posed a threat during the first half, but they pulled level with their first clear sight of goal after 34 minutes.

Yuto Nagatomo controlled a long ball inside the left of the area before finding Inui around 15 yards from goal, the Real Betis forward whipping a fine right-footed strike into Khadim N'Diaye's bottom corner.

Senegal should have restored their advantage six minutes before the interval when M'Baye Niang latched onto Badou Ndiaye's through ball. The striker's rushed half-volley was too close to Kawashima, though, who was able to push way to safety.

Yuya Osako squandered a glorious opportunity to put his side ahead on the hour, somehow failing to make any contact with Gaku Shibasaki's cross from just six yards out.Inui then came agonisingly close to scoring his second of the game four minutes later when his wonderful curled effort from a surging break bounced off the crossbar.

Those missed opportunities were brought into sharp focus after 71 minutes when Wague steamed in at the back post to meet Sabaly's low cross and crash a powerful strike into the roof of the net.

Senegal's hopes of all but securing their last-16 spot were dashed after 78 minutes, though, as Inui took full advantage of N'Diaye's missed punch to tee up Honda, who drove home from eight yards to keep Group H very much alive.
