Poland 0 Colombia 3: Falcao's maiden World Cup goal revitalises Pekerman's side

    4D98BACB00000578-5880293-Falcao_of_Colombia_celebrates_after_doubling_his_side_s_lead_ove-a-25_1529875642629.jpg

Radamel Falcao scored his first World Cup goal as Colombia revived their hopes of reaching the World Cup knockout phase with a 3-0 victory over Poland, who now cannot reach the last 16.

Monaco striker Falcao stroked home his 30th international goal, making him the first player from Colombia to reach such a milestone, midway through the second half of a cagey encounter in Kazan, where defeat for either side would have meant elimination from the competition.

Barcelona defender Yerry Mina scored the opener, powering a header beyond Wojciech Szczesny five minutes before half-time to enliven the contest, and it was the creativity and industry of Juan Cuadrado and James Rodriguez that picked apart Poland's tightly stitched seams.

The presence of James, fully fit again after a calf injury, vastly improved Colombia's link-up play following a below-par performance in their opening 2-1 defeat to Japan, and he provided the assist for Cuadrado to add a third goal that put the game well beyond Poland.Victory leaves Jose Pekerman's side on three points in Group H, one point behind co-leaders Japan and Senegal ahead of their crunch match against the latter on Thursday.

Poland will have a role to play in deciding the fate of the group when they take on Japan, but ultimately head coach Adam Nawalka can have few complaints about being dumped out of the competition after two games in which his side failed to provide talismanic striker Robert Lewandowski with adequate service.

The first ever meeting between these two sides began with a number of heavy challenges at both ends of the field that prevented the game from developing into an early rhythm.Colombia started to dominate the midfield and launched attacks down the right flank through Cuadrado, but the Juventus winger failed to penetrate a packed Poland defence.

Nawalka's side set their stall out to avoid falling behind as they did in the first half of their 2-1 defeat to Senegal and Colombia's chances of breaking their resolve were hit by an injury to Abel Aguilar, who was taken from the field on a stretcher in the 32nd minute and replaced by Mateus Uribe.

But shortly after Cuadrado came alive, running at the Poland defence and starting a move that culminated with an exquisitely weighted cross by James that was met by the head of Mina, who lost his marker to head over Szczesny's outstretched arms and into the net.Juan Fernando Quintero fired wide from 25 yards as Colombia started the second half brightly and Cuadrado then squared to Falcao on the edge of the box, but the Monaco striker lifted his shot well over the crossbar.

The isolated Lewandowski's first real chance of the game arrived in the 58th minute when he controlled a long pass brilliantly only to shoot straight into David Ospina's midriff as Poland attempted their first shot on target of the game.Having survived that scare, Colombia came to life and Quintero's superb slide-rule pass presented Falcao with a one-on-one situation and he expertly guided the ball past Szczesny with the outside of his right foot to double his side's lead.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, James' pass from the left found Cuadrado in space through the middle and he took a touch before applying an assured finish into the bottom-right corner of the net.Colombia almost added a fourth after a mix-up between Jan Bednarek and Szczesny, but Uribe's backheel was cleared off the goal line to leave the final score 3-0.

Fellaini to reveal Manchester United future ‘soon’

Marouane Fellaini has revealed he will soon announce his club future as his Manchester United contract runs down. The midfielder’s deal with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the month, and his refusal to ink new terms throughout the 2017-18 season has led to speculation he will depart Old Trafford.

The two sides have been an impasse over terms, with Fellaini saying in May the club missed an opportunity to renew his deal prior to last season, knowing that he now has strong bargaining power with his ability to depart on a free this summer.

Fellaini has not closed the door on staying with the Red Devils, however, and the 30-year-old midfielder said on Sunday he was nearing a decision on his future. The Belgian international, who is currently with his national side at the World Cup, answered: "You will know soon" when asked if he would return to Manchester United next season.

The Red Devils have already added a reinforcement to their midfield in the form of Brazil international Fred, landing him in a £52.5 million ($70m) deal from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However with the retirement of Michael Carrick, Fellaini remains a figure who would hold a place in Jose Mourinho’s plans.Fellaini has played the last five seasons with Manchester United, after moving at the end of the 2013-14 summer window, following former Red Devils manager David Moyes to Old Trafford from Everton.

The midfielder did not feature in Belgium's World Cup opener, a 3-0 win over Panama, but came off the bench in the 59th minute of his nation's 5-2 win over Tunisia.

Lampard: England can win the World Cup

Former Chelsea legend and current Derby County manager Frank Lampard has stated his belief that England can 'go all the way' at the World Cup.Expectations of the Three Lions were dampened somewhat heading into the showpiece in Russia, with many keen to keep the pressure off what is a historically underachieving side at major tournaments.

A successful qualifying campaign was marred by what many perceived to be boring football, leading to speculation over whether Gareth Southgate's charges would be able to make their mark on the competition.

Southgate opted to switch to a more attacking formation ahead of the World Cup, however, with an exciting 3-5-2 set-up delivering more free-flowing football that fans immediately warmed to.

And now, following England's 6-1 thumping of Panama, those same fans have been joined by Lampard in starting to believe that football could indeed be coming home.“I think we can go all the way, I genuinely do,” Lampard told the BBC's World Cup Daily Podcast. “I don't see why we would be negative enough to start going 'oh we have to get to the quarter finals'

“I think the team have shown in their performances – and this is not me getting ahead of myself – just look at the talent in our squad and the way they're playing, why should we write ourselves off?“Yes, the players will focus game by game and day by day, that's tournament football, that's what they have to do.“But ourselves from the outside, we can look in and say 'this team has a real chance'.

“I think it was one of a multitude of issues in previous years that we analysed everything specific on individuals and ended up creating a lot of arguments around what is a team sport – and we want the best for the team.

“I think huge credit to Gareth Southgate there that he's been so fluid with the system, he's changed the philosophy of the team over the last two years to the way they're playing.“We've got so many more options when we're on the ball now because we're not playing a very basic 4-4-2, which we played for many a year.

“So we can come into tournament football and feel like we can get a lot of possession in midfield which is key.“Gareth's made all these moves that make us talk more now about the team rather than 'this position' and 'that position'.”

Now successfully qualified for the last 16, England's next clash against Belgium on Thursday will decide which of the two sides finishes at the head of Group G.
