Real Madrid deny making €310m Neymar offer to PSG


Real Madrid have issued a strong denial after reports in Spain claimed a world-record offer has been made to Paris Saint-Germain to buy Neymar.The Brazil superstar has been linked with Madrid ever since leaving LaLiga rivals Barcelona for PSG last August.

PSG paid a world-record €222million to trigger Neymar's release clause but, although the forward fired the club to a domestic treble, reports have indicated he has failed to settle in Paris.


Spanish public broadcaster TVE reported on Monday that Madrid have offered PSG €310m (£275m/$360m) to bring the Brazilian back to LaLiga.But Madrid quickly hit back at the claims with a statement that denied making any contact with PSG or Neymar over a possible blockbuster transfer.

"Given the information issued tonight by TVE on a supposed offer of Real Madrid to PSG and player Neymar, Real Madrid said that this information is outright false," the statement read.

Sweden 1 Switzerland 0: Swedes dream thanks to Forsberg's moment of fortune

Sweden are through to the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1994 after a deflected goal from Emil Forsberg clinched a 1-0 win over Switzerland.

The first meeting between the nations at a major tournament simmered in the St Petersburg sunshine until Forsberg's fortunate strike handed Sweden a crucial lead.The RB Leipzig playmaker's tame 66th-minute effort was heading straight at Yann Sommer until Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji stuck out a foot, sending the ball looping beyond his wrong-footed goalkeeper.




Forsberg also produced a well-timed clearance in his own penalty area to preserve the advantage against a Switzerland side who finished with 10 men, defender Michael Lang seeing red after clipping the heels of Martin Olsson just outside the penalty area when the substitute was clean through on goal.Referee Damir Skomina initially gave a penalty deep into stoppage time before VAR intervened, though the change of decision made no difference to the final outcome of the contest.

The only disappointment for Sweden was a first-half booking picked up by Mikael Lustig, ruling the defender out of a last-eight clash against either Colombia or England in Samara on Saturday.In contrast, Switzerland's run in Russia came to a rather subdued end. They had to change half of their defence for the knockout fixture, Stephan Lichtsteiner and Fabian Schar were both ruled out through suspension, yet it was in attack where they struggled the most.


The reshuffled back four stood firm in the first half, though they relied upon goalkeeper Sommer's reactions to turn away Marcus Berg's first-time strike with his left foot.

They were also fortunate to see an unmarked Albin Ekdal fail to hit the target prior to the break, the Hamburg midfielder going for an ambitious volley instead of throwing his head at Lustig's inviting cross from the right.Blerim Dzemaili blazed over at the other end to waste a rare sight of goal for Switzerland, who had developed a reputation as second-half specialists at this year's tournament.

Yet Vladimir Petkovic's side - who had scored four of their five goals in Russia after the interval - continued to struggle, only waking from their slumber after falling behind.Ola Toivonen wastefully fired over when well positioned inside the penalty area before Forsberg finally broke the deadlock, albeit more through luck than judgement, his attempt clipping the unfortunate Akanji to beat Sommer.

Switzerland responded to the setback by sending on forwards Breel Embolo and Haris Seferovic, and the latter at least tested Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen with a header in the closing stages.



Sweden were denied the chance to double their lead from the spot following Lang's late dismissal for taking out Olsson, with Sommer beating away Toivonen's driven free-kick after a lengthy delay - but one goal was enough for Janne Andersson's side to progress.

Colombia 1 England 1 (aet, 3-4 on penalties): Dier seals shoot-out glory for Three Lions

Eric Dier scored the decisive spot-kick as England won a World Cup penalty shoot-out for the first time, edging past Colombia 4-3 to set up a quarter-final against Sweden.

Harry Kane's sixth goal of the World Cup - which puts him two clear of nearest rival Romelu Lukaku in the race for the Golden Boot - appeared enough to secure England's first knockout win at a major tournament in 12 years, the Three Lions captain scoring from the spot after he was fouled by Carlos Sanchez.But Colombia took the last-16 tie into extra-time with a dramatic equaliser in the 93rd minute in Moscow on Tuesday, Yerry Mina climbing highest in the box to score a header from Juan Cuadrado's corner.


In the shoot-out, David Ospina plunged to his left to keep out Jordan Henderson's poor penalty and give Colombia the advantage, but Mateus Uribe struck the crossbar and Jordan Pickford denied Carlos Bacca brilliantly to give Dier the chance to win it for the Three Lions.And the substitute kept his nerve, Dier drilling home his spot-kick even though Ospina dived the right way, with England now set to take on Sweden on Saturday in Samara.


The South Americans were without James Rodriguez due to injury and could have had Wilmar Barrios sent off in the first half when he appeared to aim a headbutt into Henderson's chest and chin.

England started on top, Ospina beating away a long-range Ashley Young drive before Raheem Sterling saw a pair of shots well blocked. Kane had the game's first chance in the 16th minute, but, arriving beyond the back post to meet a Kieran Trippier cross, the Tottenham striker could not direct his header on target.Barrios was perhaps fortunate only to be booked when he appeared to headbutt Henderson, Trippier bending the resulting free-kick narrowly wide.

Henderson exaggerated the contact, but there was no doubting the intent from Barrios, referee Mark Geiger opting not to consult VAR before showing the yellow card.Colombia had frustrated England with their physical approach, but it came at a cost as they gave away a penalty early in the second half when Sanchez dragged Kane down in the box.

Kane had a long wait to take the kick, with Colombia attempting to distract the England captain, but the Tottenham striker kept his cool to beat Arsenal goalkeeper Ospina from 12 yards.

England went close to scoring a second six minutes later when another terrific Trippier cross found Dele Alli and the midfielder headed over the crossbar.Shorn of James' creative threat Colombia struggled to break England down and Kyle Walker's mistake should have been punished by Juan Cuadrado, the winger firing his chance wide.Colombia forced their way into extra-time, though, Mina scoring for the third World Cup game in a row after Pickford made a world-class save to tip away Uribe's drive.

With Ospina in the box for the resulting Cuadrado corner, Mina rose highest to crash in a downward header that a desperate Trippier could not keep out on the line.England substitutes had the best chances to win the game in extra-time, but Danny Rose rifled wide of the far post after being played in by Henderson and Dier wasted a free header.

But Dier made amends in stunning fashion in the shoot-out, England coming from 3-2 down after Uribe and Bacca failed to convert their spot-kicks - the latter seeing his central penalty superbly stopped by Pickford.Dier thumped in his effort to spark wild celebrations as England ended their World Cup shoot-out hoodoo.
