France 4 Croatia 2: Pogba and Mbappe seal thrilling World Cup triumph

    4E4907A100000578-5956137-image-a-103_1531676263101.jpg

France's array of superstars came out to shine as Antoine Griezmann, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe fired them to World Cup glory with an emphatic 4-2 win over Croatia

Following a tournament packed with thrills and drama, the final at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium lived up to what preceded it from the moment Les Bleus hit the front through an 18th-minute own goal by Mario Mandzukic – a cruel role reversal for Croatia's extra-time hero in the semi-final win over England.Zlatko Dalic's side had started the stronger and levelled through a fine Ivan Perisic strike before the Inter player was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box, as VAR made its first impact upon a World Cup final.

Griezmann converted his fourth of the tournament from 12 yards before Croatia pursued their opponents furiously once more at the start of the second half.A pitch invasion from punk protest group Pussy Riot in the 52nd minute seemed a fitting precursor to the anarchy that followed, with Pogba and Mbappe arrowing in majestic strikes from outside the box.

An absent-minded error from France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris allowed Mandzukic to put his name on the other side of the scoreboard, but Didier Deschamps was not to be denied his piece of history as the third man to win the World Cup as both a player and a coach. Deschamps was captain of the team that lifted the trophy back in 1998.

Croatia quickly established an easy control of possession and probed down either flank during the opening exchanges, only to fall behind after France's first attacking spell of note.Griezmann tumbled when Marcelo Brozovic clipped his heels and the Atletico Madrid star's floated free-kick was glanced unwittingly into his own net by Mandzukic.

It meant the question was whether France's capacity to lock down an advantage or Croatia's reputation as the comeback kings of the knockout stages would hold sway.

In the 28th minute, Perisic emphatically provided the answer. The winger was cynically tripped by N'Golo Kante, who was booked for his indiscretion. France failed to adequately deal with Luka Modric's deep free-kick and Perisic seized on a knockdown from Domagoj Vida with a clever right-footed touch and rasping left-footed finish. But Croatia's goalscorer had his joy curtailed shortly afterwards when a lengthy VAR review saw him penalised for handball from Griezmann's right-wing corner.

Replays left no doubt the ball struck Perisic's left hand, but, given he was pulling his arm down and was left largely unsighted by Raphael Varane, he had every right to feel aggrieved.Griezmann kept his cool impressively to nonchalantly stroke the spot-kick home and France survived a sustained spell of set-piece pressure to keep their lead intact at the break.

Croatia began the second half as they did the first and Lloris clawed Ante Rebic's strike over on the end of Ivan Rakitic's superb pass. Waves of attacks followed from Dalic's men before France were granted respite via Mbappe's lightning pace. The Paris Saint-Germain star escaped Vida's clutches and forced Danijel Subasic to save with his feet.

Another of France's tournament stand-outs, Kante, then made way for Steven N'Zonzi, but it was their most celebrated midfield operator who rose majestically to the occasion before the hour.

Mbappe raided down the right and Griezmann fed Pogba on the edge of the box after failing to fully bring the ball under his spell. The Manchester United star's thunderous right-footed attempt was blocked, but he steered the rebound home immaculately with his left.

France scented blood against opponents weary from three consecutive periods of extra-time and Mbappe joined Griezmann on four for the tournament, unleashing a low 65th-minute drive from 25 yards as Vida stood off to become the first teenager to score in a World Cup final since Pele.

Lloris encouraged Croatia to dip into their seemingly bottomless reserves by allowing Mandzukic to tackle him and bundle home in the 69th minute. Rakitic went close as his brave team-mates ensured they would not be disgraced in the face of France's second world title.

Ronaldo lands in Turin for medical ahead of sensational €100m Juventus transfer

    4E47646A00000578-5956233-image-a-25_1531670758288.jpg

Cristiano Ronaldo has arrived in Turin to finalise his sensational transfer from Real Madrid to Juventus, the Italian giants confirmed. The striker agreed terms last week over a €100 million (£88m/$117m) switch to Serie A , a move that shook the world of football in the middle of the World Cup.

Under the deal, Ronaldo will receive a bumper €30 million (£26.5m/$35m) a season contract that will run for the next four years. And, ahead of an expected presentation this week as Juve's latest summer signing, he is now in Turin to complete the formalities of the transfer.

Ronaldo will undergo his medical on Monday before being introduced to the world as a Juventus player. On Sunday he was snapped landing at nearby Caselle airport in the company of partner Georgina Rodriguez, an image that was shared by the Old Lady on social networks.

"Look who has just arrived at Caselle," was the message posted on the club's Twitter account.

    "Welcome, Cristiano!"

Ronaldo moves to Serie A after nine trophy and record-laden seasons at Madrid, where he arrived in turn from Manchester United in 2009.
The Portugal star lifted an incredible four Champions League trophies with the Merengue, including three in the last three seasons.Madrid also took the Liga title twice during his time at the club, while Ronaldo was honoured with four Ballon d'Or awards.

In total the striker smashed 450 goals in 438 official Madrid games, a strike-rate of over a goal a game and a mark that establishes him as the highest scorer in Blancos history.

:(Man Utd outcast Blind closes in on €21m Ajax return

Manchester United are on the verge of agreeing to the sale of Daley Blind to Ajax for up to €21 million (£19m/$25m).The Dutch side look set to part with an initial €16m (£14m/$19m), with the rest of the fee dependent on Blind’s form on his return to the Amsterdam ArenA.

United are keen to get the deal wrapped up sooner rather than later, and the versatile defender is set to miss the Red Devils’ flight to the USA on Sunday for their summer tour as he looks to tie up the move.

Blind started only four Premier League games last season, with three of those coming in the opening trio of fixtures and the remaining appearance being a full nine months later as Jose Mourinho chose a much-changed team for the final game against Watford ahead of the following week’s FA Cup final.

The 28-year-old has spent four years at Old Trafford after arriving from Ajax in August 2014, with Louis van Gaal initially utilising him in his favoured central midfield role. But he was then shifted to a regular centre-back spot in 2015-16 under Van Gaal and has failed to find a settled position in the United line-up since Mourinho’s arrival in the summer of 2016.

Mourinho insisted in May that his desire was to keep both Blind and Matteo Darmian at the club amidst extensive interest, but the manager did add that the club was open to offers.

“When a player wants to go, if that’s the case, when the right offers arrive in the club we study that because we always try to have the players happy,” he told a press conference."So, if happiness means for them to leave, let's see what happens, but they are in my plans. I don't want to sell [them], I want to keep [them]."

But Blind now looks destined to return to Amsterdam, with United satisfied at having negotiated a deal which will see them make a profit on the £14m they spent in 2014 on the 54-cap Netherlands international.

Buffon gives away a penalty as PSG stunned on legend's debut

Gianluigi Buffon conceded a penalty as a forgettable first appearance for Paris Saint-Germain ended in a 4-2 loss to third-tier Chambly on Sunday. The 40-year-old goalkeeper, signed on a free from Juventus, played the first 45 minutes in the behind-closed-doors friendly.

His debut began on a difficult note, giving away an early penalty which set Chambly on their way to a two-goal half-time lead.PSG's deficit came despite the presence of rumoured Barcelona target Adrien Rabiot, former Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez and United States international Timothy Weah in the starting XI.

Teenagers Colin Dagba and Virgiliu Postolachi netted after half-time to provide the Ligue 1 champions with a measure of optimism, although their goals failed to spare head coach Thomas Tuchel from his first defeat at the helm.Buffon's next assignment with his new club is a more glamorous International Champions Cup clash with Bayern Munich in Austria on Saturday.

The will also play Arsenal and Atletico Madrid in the competition before tackling Monaco in the Trophee des Champions on August 4.PSG's league duties get underway on August 12, when they will play host to Caen in Ligue 1.

Meanwhile, all thoughts are turned towards the World Cup final, where PSG youngster Kylian Mbappe is set to feature for France against Croatia, while Presnel Kimpembe and Alphonse Areola will likely be on the bench.

Modric wins World Cup Golden Ball as Mbappe named best young player

    4E49A52B00000578-0-image-m-129_1531678646280.jpg

Luka Modric has been named the 2018 World Cup Golden Ball winner, while France star Kylian Mbappe was named as the best young player at the tournament.

Modric helped Croatia to the World Cup final with his outstanding play in the middle of the park, as the nation of just over 4 million people made a fairytale run through the competition with wins over the likes of Argentina and England along the way.Modric edged out Belgium's Eden Hazard and France's Antoine Griezmann, who finished second and third respectively, for top honours.

Mbappe was also impressive throughout the tournament and was among the scorers in the final as Les Bleus ran to a 4-2 win over Modric and Croatia. The 19-year-old also scored a brace in a 4-3 win Argentina in the round of 16, with his World Cup exploits at such a tender age matching the likes of Pele in their historical relevance.

England's Harry Kane claimed the Golden Boot for the competition with his six goals for England, who made it all the way to the semi-final before being knocked out after extra time by Croatia.Griezmann was the man nearest Kane at the top of the scoring charts, with Belgium's Romelu Lukaku finishing third.

Lukaku's team-mate Thibaut Courtois was named as the tournament's top goalkeeper, winning the Golden Glove award, and Spain claimed the FIFA Fair Play trophy.

Roma want Donnarumma agreement before allowing Alisson exit

Roma are willing to let goalkeeper Alisson leave the club this summer, but want to have a deal in place for Milan's Gianluigi Donnarumma before allowing the Brazilian to depart.

Goal understands that the Roma brass would like to keep Alisson for next season, but would be willing to give the player his desired move away if they can have a replacement in place.

The Brazilian has drawn interest from Premier League clubs Liverpool and Chelsea along with La Liga giants Real Madrid and could favour a move away from Roma.

Giallorossi leadership consider Donnarumma as their top target to replace the Brazilian, and the 19-year-old's agent, Mino Raiola, is familiar with the club having recently orchestrated Justin Kluivert's transfer to Rome.Having recently completed the signing of Pepe Reina from Napoli , Milan appear willing to let Donnarumma leave the club.

It would take a good portion of the money Roma make from Alisson's sale to afford Donnarumma, but talks are set to intensify in the coming days with Roma's ability to offer Champions League football also helping their cause in efforts to sign the young Italian.

A Liverpool move for Alisson before the end of the summer window seems unlikely, with the Reds set to give Danny Ward, the third-choice goalkeeper last season, a chance to stake his claim for the No.1 spot.Real Madrid may hold the key to the Alisson saga, with the Spanish giants interested in both the Roma goalkeeper and Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois.

Courtois would be the cheaper of the two options for Los Blancos, and the London outfit would then prioritize Alisson as their replacement for the Belgian.

:yes:Ferdinand challenges Mourinho to unleash Pogba at United

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand challenged manager Jose Mourinho to get the best out of Paul Pogba after he helped France win the World Cup.Pogba enjoyed a strong campaign as France claimed their second world title with a 4-2 win over Croatia in Moscow on Sunday.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who scored in the final, has experienced a topsy-turvy two years at Old Trafford following his £89 million ($118m) arrival from Juventus and Ferdinand believes it is up to Mourinho to translate that international form to his club. "Pogba was immense, especially second half. The pressure was on and he came to the fore," he told BBC One.

"It's down to Jose now to unlock this Pogba we've seen at the World Cup."Pogba found himself out of favour under Mourinho last term, sparking speculation of a possible departure from Old Trafford. The Frenchman scored six goals as United finished second in the Premier League.

Win the World Cup twice? Deschamps tips Mbappe to do what Henry and Trezeguet couldn't

Didier Deschamps backed Kylian Mbappe to trump the achievements of his own generation by winning the World Cup for a second time.Mbappe scored in France's 4-2 victory over Croatia in Moscow to become the second youngest player after Pele to do so in a World Cup final and Deschamps said he hopes there is more to come from the 19-year-old.Drawing parallels with strikers from the team he captained to World Cup glory in 1998, Deschamps pointed out that the likes of David Trezeguet and Thierry Henry never managed to repeat the feat despite being only 20 when they lifted the trophy.

"Mbappe is only 19 and I do hope he is going to be world champion again,"Deschamps said at his post-match media conference."He's done so much already.

"Twenty years ago, Trezeguet and Henry didn't become world champions again." Deschamps was asked whether Mbappe's team-mate Antoine Griezmann, who scored a penalty in the final to cap an outstanding tournament, was the defining player in the current Les Bleus line-up.He praised the 27-year-old but insisted the bond between players like Griezmann, Mbappe and Paul Pogba was at the heart of France's triumph.

The coach added: "Antoine has great qualities and is extremely humble. He lives thanks to the collective – the collective is crucial."There are players and individuals that make a difference – Kylian, Paul, Antoine – but the way this team was built was for the wellness we felt together.

"They have done everything together. Sometimes there are conflicts, we need to listen to them all collectively and individually. We then try to realise everything on the pitch and they fought for it on the pitch today."Griezmann shared Deschamps' view and described his team-mates as "extraordinary".

"The collective is most important – we have seen that at the World Cup," the Atletico Madrid forward told reporters."As soon as you are strong and united as a team it will work. I have extraordinary team-mates.

"Our children will be very proud to have our names. We have to enjoy it now. We are trying to give a good image to France of the players."I hope many young people will have watched the match and want to be like us."

Mbappe to Man Utd? Mourinho needs to be 'chasing' World Cup winner, says Ferdinand

Manchester United have been urged to put themselves in contention for any transfer deal involving Kylian Mbappe, with Rio Ferdinand hoping his former club are “chasing” Paris Saint-Germain’s World Cup-winning forward.

At just 19 years of age, the France international has become one of the most sought-after and highly-rated talents in the global game. His exploits for his country this summer have helped to further enhance his profile, with four goals recorded for Les Bleus as they swept to football’s biggest prize at Russia 2018.

Mbappe was on target in a 4-2 final triumph over Croatia, with that effort helping him to the Best Young Player Award, and speculation regarding a big-money move has resurfaced during the current window.

Ex-United defender Ferdinand believes those at Old Trafford have to be in the mix if the exit doors in Paris are nudged open, telling BBC Sport: "He is the guy who will be standing up on that Ballon d'Or podium in years to come. Easy."I hope my old club are chasing him. He has that connection with Paul Pogba, too.

"There is already maturity beyond his years."Mbappe’s goal against Croatia, as he put the finishing touches to France’s victory, saw him become only the second teenager after Brazil legend Pele to net in a World Cup final.

It is achievements such as that which have seen him heavily linked with the likes of Real Madrid, as those in the Spanish capital bid farewell to five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.PSG, though, took up the option of turning a loan agreement with Monaco into a permanent deal for the youngster.

A €180 million (£159m/$211m) deal is due to keep Mbappe at Parc des Princes, with a man who netted 21 times at club level last season already stating that he intends to still be in France for 2018-19.He told reporters on the back of his World Cup heroics: "I will stay with PSG, continuing on my path with them.

"I am at the beginning of my career."

Arsenal & Chelsea face Golovin fight as Monaco confirm offer for Russian star

Chelsea and Arsenal face competition in the battle for Aleksandr Golovin, with Monaco announcing that they have tabled an offer for the CSKA Moscow midfielder.

The 22-year-old has been attracting interest from Europe’s leading clubs for some time, with his talents first noted at the Confederations Cup in 2017.He enhanced that reputation by starring for hosts Russia at the 2018 World Cup, with a big-money summer transfer now expected.

Goal has revealed that Chelsea and Juventus are keen, with Arsenal and Barcelona among the other sides to have been credited with holding an interest.Monaco, though, have sought to surge to the front of the queue by making a formal approach, with the Ligue 1 outfit of the opinion that they could best serve the ongoing development of an exciting young talent.

The club’s vice-president, Vadim Vasilyev, told Sport Express: "We made CSKA a proposal for Golovin. “I cannot reveal the amount of the transfer, but it is a worthy fee. The duration of the contract? Standard, five years.“I think in this situation the transition to Monaco is the most correct option for Golovin.

“To go from Russia immediately to the top club of the leading European league is very risky. We are able to launch the career of young players – just look at Kylian Mbappe.“Everything should be decided in the coming days. Probably, even today.

“But everyone needs to understand that we cannot wait long. If the transaction does not succeed, we will move on to the next target.”Golovin has emerged out of CSKA Moscow’s academy system to make 113 senior appearances for the club.

The 2017-18 campaign proved to be his most productive to date, as he netted seven times, before an international cap tally was taken to 23 at a home World Cup.He opened that competition in style, scoring once and providing two assists as Russia swept past Saudi Arabia 5-0.The hosts would go on to see off Spain in the last 16 before losing to Croatia on penalties at the quarter-final stage.

Conte thanks Chelsea 'friends' after acrimonious departure from Stamford Bridge

Antonio Conte has thanked his “friends” at Chelsea for an “amazing” experience which delivered Premier League and FA Cup triumphs prior to his acrimonious departure.

Despite having delivered major honours in each of his two seasons at Stamford Bridge, and with a year still to run on his contract, the Italian has been cast aside by the Blues.Maurizio Sarri has been appointed in his place, with the former Napoli boss inheriting the reins ahead of the 2018-19 campaign.

Conte, who had seen his future called into question for several months before a decision was finally taken, now finds himself out of work but insists he will look back fondly on his time in west London.

He said in a statement released through the League Managers Association (LMA): “I would like to thank all of my friends at Chelsea Football Club for their hard work and support over the past two seasons which enabled us to win the Premier League and FA Cup together.

“To the players, whose talent and commitment was so important to our successes, I thank them for everything. It has been a pleasure working with them every day.“To my staff, who always worked so hard, I must say thank you and well done for their professionalism and dedication throughout.

“I have enjoyed my time in England and London so much and I want to thank the Chelsea fans who have been amazing to me and my family. It was fantastic for me to be able to share my emotions, passion and enthusiasm throughout two unforgettable seasons with these amazing Chelsea supporters, who will always stay in my heart.“I hope Chelsea will continue to be successful and I wish everyone well for next season.“I have made many memories during my time with Chelsea, which I will take with me into my next challenge.”

LMA chief executive Richard Bevan added: “Antonio made an immediate impact when he arrived in the Premier League two years ago. His energy and enthusiasm for football has been infectious and it has been a privilege to have one of the best coaches in the world working in the Premier League to raise the standard of the league and his players at Chelsea.

“His record as a manager speaks for itself, with a record-breaking Premier League season and FA Cup title to look back on with pride. Cristiano Ronaldo's Juventus move the ‘perfect choice’, says Didier Drogba

Juventus is the perfect and exciting choice for Cristiano Ronaldo, according to former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is set to complete a €100 million transfer plus €12 million in bonuses to the Italian Serie A champions on Monday. The deal that surprised the world will also see the Portugal international earn €30 million per year net salary.

However, Drogba revealed that he was not amazed when Real Madrid confirmed his departure last week and admitted that he was closed to moving to the Italian top-flight as well. The former Chelsea talisman is also impressed by the 33-year-old’s motivation for new challenges after spending nine years at the Santiago Bernabeu where he won 16 trophies including four Uefa Champions League titles.

''I am not remotely surprised [by Ronaldo transfer]. I find it as a perfect, exciting and such a good choice that I was about to do it, too.'' Drogba was quoted as saying by Football Italia."I thought I had already joined a Serie A club and we were down to the details, but then everything evaporated. Don’t ask me the club, there’s no point opening that up now.

''In any case, it was more than just an offer and I was very interested, so I perfectly understand Ronaldo’s desire to play in Serie A.

''Many say he should’ve remained at Real Madrid and maybe for any other champion at the age of 33, that would’ve made sense. Real are a giant club with ambitions always at the top level, but he is someone who feeds on motivation and at that age, you need new challenges.''

Sarri needs 'one or two changes' to bring style to Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri said he needs to make "one or two adjustments" before Chelsea will be ready to play his football as he looked forward to going head to head with "the most important coaches in Europe".The 59-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge to replace Antonio Conte as Chelsea's head coach, ending his 13-year spell in Italy, where he worked at nine different clubs.

Chelsea announced Sarri's appointment hours before they confirmed the signing of Jorginho, who excelled under him at Napoli and had been heavily courted by Manchester City.

The Blues are also competing for the signing of Aleksandr Golovin from CSKA Moscow, with Monaco having confirmed an offer, while Arsenal and Juventus are interested.

And an excited Sarri believes the squad is close to the level he wants before the new campaign gets underway."I think Chelsea are a good team," Sarri told Chelsea TV. "The problem is that in England, there are five or six very good teams.

"I think with one or two adjustments, we can try to play my football."In the Premier League there are all the most important coaches in Europe, maybe in the world. It will be very exciting to play against [Pep] Guardiola, [Mauricio] Pochettino, [Jose] Mourinho, [Jurgen] Klopp and all the others."

Manchester City boss Guardiola had previously said he would be delighted if Sarri were to come to the Premier League, but the Italian responded humbly when asked about praise from one of his new rivals."Guardiola is principally a friend," said Sarri. "I think he has spoken well about me for this motive."

Sarri gave his assessment of Jorginho, who joined Chelsea after the London club fended off competition from City for his signature, and he was glowing in his account of the Italian midfielder's capabilities.

"Jorginho is not a physical player, he's a technical player," said Sarri."But [his] most important quality is that he's very quick in the mind so he has the ability to move the ball very quickly."
