Paris Saint-Germain 4 Saint-Etienne 0: Ligue 1 champions march on without Neymar and Mbappe

    4297948-0-image-a-12_1536953682883.jpg

Julian Draxler, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Moussa Diaby were all on target as Paris Saint-Germain continued their strong start to the season with a routine 4-0 Ligue 1 win at home to Saint-Etienne.

Neymar was rested ahead of Tuesday's Champions League trip to Liverpool while Kylian Mbappe was serving the first game of a three-match ban after his red card against Nimes last time out.Saint-Etienne wasted a host of early chances in Friday's meeting at the Parc des Princes and Julian Draxler's terrific header earned the Ligue 1 champions a 22nd-minute advantage.

Cavani converted a second-half penalty he won himself with Di Maria adding gloss to the scoreline with a thumping strike before teenager Diaby opened his Ligue 1 account in the 84th minute.Thomas Tuchel has now won his first six competitive games in charge of PSG, breaking Carlo Ancelotti's club record.

Lois Diony missed a brilliant 13th-minute chance when picked out by Yannis Salibur's low right-wing cross, Loic Perrin then sending a free header wide from Wahbi Khazri's corner.

But after Yann M'Vila slotted a shot just wide, PSG took the lead against the run of play.Adrien Rabiot battled to win the ball in the centre circle and Marco Verratti's lofted pass into the box was nodded into the air by Draxler, who improvised to head a fine finish over Stephane Ruffier.

And PSG doubled their lead just six minutes after the restart, Cavani scoring from the penalty spot for his 12th career goal against Saint-Etienne.A clumsy challenge from Saint-Etienne captain Perrin brought the striker down, with Cavani sending Ruffier the wrong way from 12 yards.

The offside flag ruled out Timothee Kolodziejczak's own goal but PSG added a 76th-minute third when Di Maria lashed in from close range, substitute Diaby then making the most of Cavani's mishit to wrap up the scoring.

Mourinho: Rashford must play centrally for England

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford can play anywhere in a front three but can only be used in a central role for England, according to manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho defended his use of the 20-year-old during a news conference on Friday, even with the England international suspended for United's trip to Watford.Questions have been asked over Rashford's best position, with the forward used centrally and out wide at the club level.

Mourinho believes Rashford is capable of performing in any role in a front three, but says his wide players had the freedom to move inside rather than playing as true wingers.

"To be in a system of four, to be a winger, it takes him a little bit out of his positions, but the way Manchester United plays is with three attacking players," he said."When we play with three up top – because sometimes we also play with two – our three attacking players are not wingers. They're not wide or open all the time.

"They have the freedom to come and play in between positions, and any one of the three positions is a good position for him."Mourinho said Rashford had to be used centrally by England due to Gareth Southgate's system.

"I think his position is in relation to the way his team plays. So I think in the case of the national team, they play normally with five at the back and two players in attack. I think that's his position," he said.

"He cannot be a wing-back in the system of five – he cannot replace Luke Shaw, Kieran Trippier or Danny Rose at all. He must play centrally in that system."

Mourinho: Pogba has never asked to leave Man Utd

Jose Mourinho does not believe Paul Pogba wants to leave Manchester United because the midfielder has "never" asked for a transfer.

Barcelona are said to be targeting the 25-year-old amid reports he wants to leave United in January and has a bad relationship with his coach. The France star only aided the constant speculation when he failed to rule out a January exit from Old Trafford last week.

However, Mourinho has no reason to believe the World Cup winner has his heart set on leaving.

"Paul came back after the World Cup the week before we started the Premier League," he told reporters. "We are together two months or so. He never told me he wants to leave. Never. He never told me he wants to leave."I can only comment on what is real for me, not in what I read, not in what I listen.

I have no direct relation with the people that write or the people that listen. I have a direct relation with the players – not only Paul – the players. And he never told me he wants to leave."If he doesn’t tell me he wants to leave, it’s because he wants to stay. That’s my conclusion, no?"

While Pogba is under contract until 2021, United are in danger of seeing Luke Shaw, Juan Mata and Ander Herrera leave for free as their contracts expire at the end of the season. But Mourinho is confident the Red Devils can convince them to extend.

“I hope they will stay,” Mourinho said. “We had a similar conversation last season about Marouane [Fellaini] and I was always saying I hope he stays, I believe he stays. I say the same. I hope they stay. “Of course, I am happy with the players. Luke’s evolution made us believe he goes in the right direction and of course I want to keep him.

“Juan and Ander, even if they are not playing or not playing a lot, not starting matches, by the personality point-of-view and character point-of-view, by what they represent in the modern society in football, they are almost unique pieces that I also don’t want to lose.”

Special Foden ready for England, says Guardiola

Pep Guardiola insists Phil Foden is ready to play for England and says the teenager will get plenty of game time for Manchester City this season.

The midfielder is one of the Premier League's rising stars and made five appearances for the top flight champions last season.Given the level of competition for places in Guardiola's squad, it is perhaps not all that surprising that Foden has been limited to just a handful of outings so far.

But Guardiola sees a role for the 18-year-old, who could be offered the chance to play his way into international contention.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has underlined the need for creative players in his side and Guardiola was asked if he felt any pressure to expedite Foden's development at the Etihad Stadium."No, no, I don't feel the pressure about that," he replied. "I feel the pressure to win the games. We do our best, I do my best.

"I think Phil is ready [for England]. If he wasn't ready [for City], he wouldn't be here. He's ready and after − it's the same case with Leroy [Sane] − he can compete with David [Silva], with Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan], with Kevin [De Bruyne] when he's fit, with Dinho [Fernandinho], with the top players.

"If you see the big 10-20 clubs in Europe in all the competitions, you don't see many people playing who are 18-19 years old, maybe one, two, three… but not too many."He's special, his work ethic is excellent, he will have a lot of minutes this season and after that Gareth has his own decision."

On the topic of international football, Guardiola expressed his own desire to manage at that level, but he described it as a "dream" that remains many years from becoming a reality.

"In our lives, we have dreams of what we'd like to do in the future, but it doesn't mean it's going to happen," said the 47-year-old, whose side host Fulham on Saturday."I would like to play a World Cup and a European Championship. I would like to live that situation. When I see the World Cup, I think I would like to be there.

"I had just one chance to do it as a player. In eight, 12, 14 years maybe it could happen. It doesn't just depend on me. I want to be there, but I'm not selected."

Asked if he would coach Spain, Guardiola said: "I think that is not going to happen."

Manchester City 3 Fulham 0: Sane, Sterling and the Silvas sparkle

    4307458-6171255-image-a-2_1537023292311.jpg

Leroy Sane marked his return to the Manchester City starting line-up with a quickfire goal to ignite a 3-0 victory over Fulham.Germany winger Sane tapped home after 96 seconds and David Silva netted his 50th Premier League goal midway through the first half.

Raheem Sterling helped himself to a third goal this season as City made a similarly rapid start to the second period – Fulham's cavalier attacking approach leaving their excellent goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli repeatedly exposed.

Pep Guardiola's champions remain in touch with early pacesetters Liverpool and Chelsea, two points off the Premier League summit in third.
Fernandinho pounced on a dreadful pass from Jean Michael Seri and drove forward, greeting Sane's return by gifting him a simple finish.Bernardo Silva dazzled with sublime close control before playing in Sterling – a combination of Bettinelli and his crossbar denying the England winger.

Sterling and Bernardo Silva were both involved when David Silva crashed via the underside of the bar in the 21st minute.Ederson beat away a couple of Andre Schurrle strikes as Fulham retained their attacking intent, but the visitors were indebted to stunning Bettinelli stops from Sterling and Sane before half-time.

Sergio Aguero crossed as Sterling crowned a lightning break 98 seconds into the second half and the Argentina striker soon made way for Gabriel Jesus, who almost scored with his first touch.

There was more wayward finishing from the Brazil striker as City's forwards queued up to get in on the act, with Bernardo Silva blazing over in the 81st minute to miss out on the goal his wonderful efforts merited.
